I had an SK-5 from maybe 1987 or 88 and sold it in 1996. Also was confused by it but enjoyed recording my own (low quality) sounds and fudging about to make them sound interesting. A single finger snap, looked and speed up to the max, becomes a solid synth lead sound.
Been wanting one as a kid finally got one for $5 at a flee market I use it all the type with my macbook or on its own so much fun..
