Now to comment on the keyboard. It has a MT240 without the MIDI, as the lower keyboard, and an SK2 as the top keyboard. While I do not have the SK2 any longer, I still have the MT240 and it was my very first SAMPLED sound MIDI keyboard I bought new back in 1989 and it has all those 20 presets that layer to form 210 unique tones, so it says. The demo song is Night bird and the keyboard can be musically circuit bent to change SOME of the presets in usable ways. The top keyboard is an SK2 which would be like the SK8 just totally bland and stripped down of any real usefulness.. The SK1 would have been the better choice to integrate here. Or at least the SK8 proper, as it did have a rom cart slot, drum pads, sfx, and longer sampling time with 4 sample slots memory backed by battery. Ah well.. nice try Casio lol!
@@mikolasstrajt3874 Night birds. The s at the end is important. Shakatak is the artist and written by Roger Odell and William Sharpe and IS a JAZZ song just as I figured back in 1989 when I heard it. Oh so nice.
It is a known fact that Jack Stauber use an old Casio for his records along with FL Studio and more quirky synths, so this brings me so much joy to hear all these classic tones!! Thank you so much for doing this Simon, hugs 🫂
ive seen him use one live at a Burger King. I wasn't live at the burger king but he has a video on RUclips where hes doing a live demo on a Casio for some fans. so cool.
Hey Simon! I've been watching you for over 3 years now? I keep coming in and back to watching your videos. I love how much your content has changed and how educational it is now whilst still retaining how YOU it is (if you get what I mean). Great job!
The on-board sounds and accompaniments sound the same as a large Casio ToneBank CT-390 keyboard I inherited from my grandmother. That one doesn't have a sampler, but I think it might have the ability to combine two sounds, if I recall correctly. Casio reused the same chips in a lot of keyboards, so there are a lot of keyboards with the same sounds.
So nice to see your take on this amazing keyboard. I’ve had mine since the model came out. I even used it in a rock band in the early 90’s! 😁 If I remember correct the left sample button will sample for 0.7 seconds, and the right for 1.4 sec. The right button takes up two “memory slots”, so you can only record onto sample 1 and 3.
Aha I thought you press the right button to just increase the time and cover two slots but then have to still use left for sampling. Like the right button just being a function button
I have two of these DM100s (im selling one if someone are looking for it) and i think its wonderful holy grail of Casio. Detuning upper keyboard from the lower keyboard, and putting the lower in a stack (tone bank) make it sound really huge and fat.
I was in such suspense to see how you would react to the ending tune with your different faces. Your dancing is so cute and funny! It made my day. Bring back more dancing in videos! Haha I love you Simon!!!! 😍😂
@@SimonTheMagpie lol! Yes you do! Do you have the Yamaha PSS480/580? Nice demo in that old classic FM synth workstation too! The Casio MT540(same tonebank series but with SFX buttons)has a different demo that is along the same line as the DM100/MT240.
This really is an interesting bit of old gear, I must say! I don't remember ever seeing one before, though I think I've used an SK-1 a long time ago. I really like the idea of lo fi looping samples of its own performances, that's a pretty cool idea if you're looking for that special "broken" sound.
i love my CT-640, I wish it had the sampling abilities this one has but the primitive record function and MIDI capabilities has most certainly made it very useful. I usually fall back to it for it's barebones simplicity (AND IT CAN USE BATTERYS). It's always a refresher to force yourself to stretch your creativity by using limited gear, especially when already owning a lot of high quality modern equipment at your disposal. The power supply circuit in my unit started to fail almost 10 years ago, it only gets wacky after being turned on between 5 to 10 minutes and fixes after powercycling. BUT when it fails, it does in a spectacular LOWFI way! The PCM samples distort and most of the functions have unpredictable and wacky results. despite being simple I chose to not fix it because it's actually still very musical and fun to play when it's "tired".
Awesome video! What a vintage masterpiece. Is it possible to sample anything through the mic (e.g. your vocals) or does it have to come from the keyboard in some way? Also, do the samples stay in memory after turning it off and on?
You can sample whatever youd like! Just like all the casio sk series! I just got a sk-60 recently and that one is really really fun with some of the functions for working with the samples! Will make a video soon. I think it saves. Ive been to excited to consider if it does but I really think it does
I will swear blind they made another 2 manual keyboard, but I can’t find any reference to it. I saw one about 25 years ago in a car boot sale. Don’t think it could sample but it did have midi.
I got a CT-630 that looks like a single manual of this, but judging by the sounds mine is from a previous generation sound chip, compared the Simon's. Yeah these table hooters can rock. I'd recommend using fx pedals, because some of the sounds are weak on their own.
hahaha great fun, had this keyboard as kid and was so upset when I found out it didn't really have 210 sounds, but just a cardboard giving names to each combination of lower voices. Had a cassette with sample sounds though, I remember some quite good, but power off the casio and all had to be reloaded. The demo's of these old keybaords are just too stupid, but amazing what they could make without a proper sequencer, midi and just a few kb of space. the dm100 was an amazing demo, but most casio's always were. Korg had some bangers as well.. Instant sub when seeing the demo dance! ;) what a laugh thx
Sample then resample and resample over and over again. I realise it probably won't resample itself so you'd need to use a second sampler, but it could sound really cool and interesting especially with the drum loops
I have one of these!!! Im currently trying to sell, ive just been having the hardest time finding any info over the last year! ty for some more info on this beautiful instrument
A friend of mine once had a Casio DM 100 a long time ago. I discovered a sound on this keyboard that was very similar to the synthesizer sound in Donna Summer's single State of Independence. A very funky deep bass sound like the one with which this Donna Summer single starts. With a similar sound effect. I spontaneously started playing that single intro on this DM 100. Wow. Sounded very nice. 🎹✨🥰🎶 Now that I see this video of yours here of this DM 100, that it can sample. Never tried that back in the days. 🤔 Now I see that the sampler does not work consistently. By this I mean that a sample controlled by a high-pitched key runs faster in tempo than with a lower-pitched key on the keyboard. That is fundamentally wrong from a musical point of view. This means you can never make a good sampling with multiple tones. The sound becomes a big chaotic mess. Unfortunately, that is a major negative point of this device. But hey, it's technology from almost 40 years ago... so yeah.... 😊
I love the sample looping! It would be even better if it didn't just increase the tempo of the sample and just raised the pitch. Either way, awesome demo!
@@SimonTheMagpie If it were reversible, yes. It is yours, after all. It has a kind of charm though, at least you’re getting use/ideas from it. Most probably just sat in houses, with an occasional try during Christmas or something, drunk relatives etc
Hilarious to watch the ending ..as a kid 1992,13 I was playing guitar and started recording. 4track.and putting 80's keyboards through fx..not much has changed
Not a fan of the samples being behind a paywall. I can understand needing to make a living, but why not simply have people buy them with PayPal and Venmo or even with credit cards, instead of making people jump through hoops to access them?
Hey! So more than one reason actually. But primarely it is because it’s a shared effort between me and my friend (and podcast cohost) where all the money goes straight back into making community driven stuff that costs money. Like hosting podcasts and websites and such. We figured since we just pay that stuff together we could have a shared patreon and use that money directly. And selling the packs directly would make sence for when all these packs are more completed. It’s a brand new thing though atm so as long as stuff is very much in its raw state it doesnt make sence to charge for sample packs directly! Like many are just half completed and will include seperated notes/drum sounds and even circuit bent sounds in the end. Paypal integration is not super easy either and in the case of my own webshop it even costs money. So that is kind of a bummer. So we will do that in the future I promise! It just takes many many many hours of work to get there and this is sometjing we created just 2 weeks ago 😅 But it shouldnt be hard to just become a patreon, download all, and then leave patreon :)

I think in the version released in the southern hemisphere, the metallic sound pans right.
The cool thing with the 210 sound bank is that when you combine some of the instruments, it will produce a fatter distorted timbre as a result.
That keyboard demo at the end is the really cheesy song Night Birds by Shakatak from 1982.
