  • The 1985 SK-5 sampler keyboard from Casio is certainly not their best product of the era...

I like how this keyboard has 24 samples, of which 10 are for beats, and two are for internal-use-only notification sounds. And out of the 12 remaining available samples, someone in charge went like "Okay, we got our bases covered with piano, vibraphone, trumpet, flute and pipe organ and two bongos. We also got chorus, which sounds a bit weird but oh well... But what for the rest? Harp? Violin? Maybe guitar, saxophone, cello, clarinet, pan flute or harmonica? Hm, I don't know. I'm stomped. You know what, let's put 'dog', 'surf', 'lion' and 'laser gun' and call it a day."

I remember playing with one of these as a kid - if you sampled the shortest of sound - like flicking your fingernail on the mic and set it to loop, you could get some basic static waveforms out of it

Actually this instrument is really important in Colombia in Cartagena and some cities a nearby. This is the base of the “picoteo” and is a technique in a genre called Champeta.
Champeta is an urban genre from north coast of our country and it comes from African/Caribbean rhythms mixed with the resources of the djs in that region. There are some videos talking about that of yt

This is not a bad keyboard, you’re just not using it to its full potential if you’re only using the onboard mic and speaker. Line-in for sampling, line-out for playback (through pedals etc) and it can really punch above its weight class.

This is a nice kind of comedy which is very rare on youtube. I guess you watched Van Kooten, Flying Circus etc. You could easily do a collab with The Bradge, he is great at improvising songs and hilarious comedy. He had live improvisation streams with Het Marc Show before the police asked him to take down his channels.

It's not a quality sampling keyboard, but you should not use batteries and should plug it in an amp, so the quality would improve a lot. I had an SK5 in the 90s and I guess it's not from 1985. It must be from 1988.

The speakers are terrible and very bad, I changed them for a more modern one that Apple uses and it sounds much better, but that was just a personal modification.
The machine sounds much better through the headphone output, it is actually much more acceptable for electronic music.
I use this thing a lot with Roland SP-404 mk2 and the sampler FX, I also use the SK5 sampler which is for playing bass and lo-fi things.
    Thanks

How many note polyphony did this beast have? I had a similar era rebadge (realistic) sampling keyboard (concertmate-500 that was a rebadged Casio SK-1) that had 4 note, unless you were using the 'beats' then it went down to 1... It only allowed a single 2.3 ish second sample, but it did have FM synthesis - but had a suprisingly awkward interface to set up using button and key presses...

Yeah, the damn things are way overpriced now. (I want to get one for my son who grew up with it and was on it all the time by at least age 2.) They're going for more than I paid for the RS version around '86 or '87. And, good gods, that dog thing sucked! (In that vein, why the hell would the mfgr take up that much space for a novelty dog sound?)
What was the purpose of this video? Using low batteries? Recording the tiny (and tinny) speaker instead of using a line out? Ignoring the things you can do to the samples and how you can use them (which was the best part of it -- I've used one that way to good effect on stage -- although it's a bitch to get the loop timing.)? Again: Why?
