After retrieving an artifact buried at the bottom of a lake, student divers Itou and Yena find themselves being hunted by a local armed group called 'Vigilanti' looking to steal their treasure. Now the pair must escape the region and bring their artifact back to their school!
Aqua Ippan is heavily inspired by the Metal Slug series, and pays homage to the lost prototype of the Metal Slug: SV-001 by reinventing ideas that were scrapped during its development.

Props to whoever made the soundtrack. Making it look like Metal Slug is one thing. Making it SOUND like Metal Slug is an even harder feat for me.

They need to nail the ungodly loud sfx of the Metal Slug games, the soundscape is still a bit muted in this one
MS sounds were purposely designed to make sure that you can hear the gunshots and the "ARRREAAAAAAAGUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH" over everything else in the arcade

A Metal Slug game that is more about harassing enemies, instead of killing them brutally?
A unique take, for certain. I'd say that oxygen tanks and bricks hurt almost as much as grenades, at any rate.

The bridge layer tank boss is just like the Tetsuyuki from the first Metal Slug, but looks so original nonetheless and actually has different attack patterns from those of the Tetsuyuki, it somewhat resembles the Soviet IT-28 bridge layer tank but only for the bridge part, the hull looks way too different from that of the IT-28 and might as well be original, which gives extra points for this boss' design!
It's great, but I have a nagging feel that a studio-size effort would make the bridge itself into an attack phase. It has threatening claws at the tip of the segments, after all.

This is gonna make me cry, Metal Slug is my first game of childhood. The background art, cool boss design, and the jazz-y music gives the vibes of early Metal Slug games. It' beautiful
The sequel we deserve for real.
But the story is literally not related to metal slug at all and I'm on board with you it's just that there's no fio,tarma,eri or even Marco, THE STAR OF THE SHOW!

So I played the demo too and, well it actually feels pretty different from MS, the biggest difference being the lack of an SV-001 substitute and different weapons like the HMG, which makes sense since these two are just scuba divers, not soldiers and they throw oxytanks and bricks, not grenades. Still, I really enjoyed the demo and even if this game doesn't get Slug-like vehicles, I think I'm still gonna enjoy it a lot. Sure this game is heavily inspired from Metal Slug but it's not Metal Slug, it has its own identity.
Yeah watching it looked like it had it would feel different to play. Like its hard to explain but different approach to design.
I LOVE the oxytank idea. They're literally the stone power-up from Metal Slug, and they're just as satisfying to use. Can't wait to see how they expand the weapons and grenades.

Oh sweet lord, it captures that MS1 grit perfectly!! I'm genuinely blown away holy shit. How do they have such an insane grasp and mastery of that art style? They absolutely NAILED the music as well. They GOTTA get an announcer for power-ups and stuff.

I love how the less lethal aspect of the spearguns and the oxygen tanks is even reflected with the enemies: there’s no big clouds of blood or explosions when you kill a soldier or blow up a tank, the soldiers just get badly injured/knocked out and the vehicles just break down, even the boss at the end of the level looks less utterly decimated than you’d expect. everything’s a lot cleaner…except for those planes, those guys are definitely dead.

I hope this gets a full release. The pixel art looks great and the animation is just like metal slug's So far this game captures the feel of the original games very well and the soundtrack sounds very similar.

Man! As someone who is struggling through a deathless run of Metal Slug 3, seeing that people are still trying to put their own spin on the series and keeping it relevant (no matter how much SNK tries to neglect it) is truly awe-inspiring!
One thing that bothers me in the original game is that enemy soldiers don't have guns.
They just stand in your way and throw grenades occasionally or stab you with a knife when you're within reach.
I like how this game armed the enemy soldiers which makes it more sensible.
some suggestion
- add some humanoid mid-bosses (similar to allen n metal slug) in every level to give the game lore more characters and diverse rosters then the end bosses are always giant mecha/vehicles/contraptions.
@@YonIon996 I mean, the game ssens to take place in somewhat modern times (The training is listed as 2013 and the soldiers have modern callphones) but the soldiers are using second war era equipment, so it's clearly cartoony and not historical, so why not be free to do any design they want instead of tryin to stick to historical accuracy?
Division 6 is kinda great for uploading osts and making Metal slug styled games ;)
But it took hours to make that game using pixels and layers

I like how they went from WW2 to the Korean war. Those jets and 50/60s style uniforms were a great touch!
I hope there will be more weapons in the final game, but for a demo, this is great!

A few issues I have had is the aspect ratio stretches in fullscreen mode on a ultrawide monitor instead of using black bars or view-port expansion
the level scrolling seems to have some jitter, maybe due to non integer scrollrate.
game doesn't use delta time? fps locked to 60fps not being able to take advantage of higher refreshrate monitors.
My favourite Metal Slug inspired game(s) is the good old CT Special Forces trillogy on the Game Boy Advance... but would love to try this game here too :)

If the Metal Slug source code is ever reverse engineered, I have no doubt this could be ported 1:1 to the Neo Geo hardware. The devs seem to have made this game in a way that respects its capabilities and limitations!
