    Really great phone nice review. HTC just kills it with performance year after year, that’s HTC doesn’t get enough credit for and its been that way for years. They make great phones, just cant compete with Samsung and there huge marketing budget. I hope for the best with this company its a beautiful phone

      matt donlan Both myself and my wife haven't used any other brand since 2011...! But sadly HTC doesn't get the recognition they deserve. Their hardware is second to none.

    Erica. IP 67 and 68 ratings are rated for accidental water exposure, it is not waterproof and I am surprised so many RUclips reviewers fail to understand this. Neither Samsung or Apple provide warranties for water damage. If you read the IP site you will see that IP67/68 is for still water, normal pressure, only for fresh water and IP68 does not mean IP65 tested so the s8 is not protected for spray like showers. Also it is very clear IP68 is not for use (pressing buttons) under water even fresh water. It is literally for accidental drops in water. HTC have had to highlight this as RUclips and other reviewers seem to misinterpret the IP ratings. This whole OTT excitement at water resistance is all a bit weird and it has meant second hand values have fallen, as buyers are hesitant at buying water tortured phones.

    • @janepolewchak731
      @janepolewchak731 7 лет назад +4

      andyH_England I am glad you posted this. People have unrealistic expectations. Same misunderstanding exists with watches and waterproofing vs water resistance. People want to be careless with $$$ devices. In general, people truly serious about photography don't use the phone as a primary camera.

    • @Athaeus
      @Athaeus 7 лет назад +1

      If they can't actually withstand water and dust to the rated levels, they also shouldn't be rated for it. It's that simple. It's not supposed to be a "IP68 but not really" kinds of rating system. It either can withstand the things it claims, or it can't.
      If someone sells me a bulletproof vest, I'll assume it's actually _at minimum_ capable of protecting against bullets to the levels it claims to be rated for. It should be the same for IP-ratings on devices, and the companies should not be let off the hook for not actually providing what they claim to be selling.

    • @rmendoza265
      @rmendoza265 6 лет назад +3

      Athaeus Go read the ip ratings it's made for protection not use and they are water resistant so I don't know what you're going on about. People are just idiots(including you) and think water resistance means water proof when they are two different things. Also, if people actually read what they claim they would know. I bet 99% of people don't go and read the actual definitions of the IP ratings so it's the customers fault not the company.

    • @Athaeus
      @Athaeus 6 лет назад +9

      @rmendoza265:
      If you want to throw insults, I may as well point out that you're actually the idiot here.
      Not only are you buying into the corporate bullshit they use to weasel their way out of having to replace water damaged phones, but you apparently also don't know Sony used to actively advertise using their phones in and under water. They still do, but in a more restrained fashion after realizing Australians often use salt water for their pools, which caused Sony phones to rust. Now Sony is telling people to only use them in fresh water.
      The IP rating is _absolutely not_ some sort of "It may work, it may not work, use at your own risk" kind of certification. If they are certified for something they _are meant to work up to the specified limit_ !
      And just like nobody thinks "bulletproof" means "No bullet can ever penetrate", I don't think anyone thinks IP68 means "waterproof" as in "No water can ever get in". It's just an expression for a high level of water resistance. And it damn well work for that as well, or the OEMs are producing shit-quality products they refuse to replace when they fail.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 6 лет назад +3

      Athaeus of course you are totally wrong, otherwise the OEMs would warranty against water damage if they were used as you suggest. Of course OEMs make them better than their ratings as they understand consumers do stupid things, and then like you instinctively blame the manufacturer. IP ratings are for accidental submersion not for use, it even says IP68 does not cover you for using buttons submerged. HTC have to tell you this as consumers like you just don’t get it. The water resistance is a back up in case you accidentally drop in water (never done in 30 years), it is not for you to swim with. If you need that protection buy a waterproof case. I really think it is the teen market that just doesn’t read the small print and reviewers like this really should know better. Just because an IP68 rating will probably protect you on the odd occasion doesn’t mean you can abuse that feature like you suggest.

    Great review! The best I've seen in a while. I have the U11 as well. Got it on June 1st. Absolutely loving it. The best smartphone of the year so far. The only complaint from me is that HTC doesn't get the praise they deserve for this phone. Shame they are still not making any money.

      Clous von The question is why? Worse camera, worse performance, worse battery life, narrow screen with no added benefit, late updates and less durability. Why would someone purchase the S8 over the U11, unless he's a fanboy?

      +Amir Rehman some may just like what it offers and the appearance. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Why would anyone want to purchase an iPhone for what it lacks? Yet I still have one and use it because of the ecosystem it provides. =)

    Those outdoor shots of the phone were beautiful. I had mine for a year, dropped it over a dozen times, even had an accident here my full body weight landed on the corner of a wall, and the impact was taken by the U11 in my pocket. My wife has it now and loves it, and I still get jealous of that stunning sapphire blue compared to my current U12+'s muted blue. The U11 is the phone that killed the iPhone X and Galaxy S8 in speed tests, and it is a gaming beast, not showing any signs of slowing with heavy gaming, on the beach, with 100 degree temperatures and direct sunlight.

    Thanks for a balanced review Erica! I would have sent that gapped red phone back immediately… clearly defective! Mine has taken about five falls, but only three of them onto hard surfaces. No damage from falls, but I do have a scratch on the front corner from a piece of grit, and a mark on the frame from a piece of grit trapped between the cover and the phone. Speaking of frame, HTC had to make the sides so they would flex enough for the sensors to work. So, the bend test is irrelevant. The phone is strong enough unless you are trying to intentionality damage it.
    Agree that it’s fast and smooth… Even snappier than my iPhone 7 (both on AT&T). The sunlight boost mode does not work in manual modes. In theatre mode, you get a soft pan stereo, with a single channel sound being 60% towards one side and 40% to the other. Theatre mode also throws more sound to the front of the phone.
    Regarding the headphone adapter, the initial release was slightly substandard, and I was able to pick out differences in playback. However, HTC released a firmware update for the external DAC, and the adapter now outperforms the LG V20 in terms of noise, dynamic range, and harmonic distortion. It is now pretty much impossible to tell the difference using the same headphones and switching between the HTC M8 and the U11 with the adapter. And if a studio engineer using a pair of Sennheiser HD 558’s can’t tell the difference, it’s likely that the average person will only have a psychological preference. USonic though, is another world. The best headphones on the best phone in the world pale in comparison. I’ve got 20+ years experience in pro audio, and the U11 is now my favorite phone for music.

      +Altema22 it's very interesting what different sound engineers will say. Some love it and some hate it. I suppose it's objective by taste at the end of the day due to everyone's unique physiology. Many still insist upon finding a way to connect their beloved dac / headphones combo. This is why I don't dabble with sound much lol. No one agrees except about the basics that can be measured.

    About water resistance, I own an S7 Edge and I did, considering it's IP67, submerged it and tried to take pictures underwater. The virtual buttons were not responding so I touched the volume buttons in order to take the shot, after that, pretty much the whole phone went haywire...For about 2 days, I could barely use it, but after that, slowly recovered, the only issue that stood was the Home Button, which lost functionality, but surprisingly still worked as a fingerprint reader. So my advice would be not to do the same mistake I did, as you would only end up with a broken phone that most likely won't be covered by warranty.

      Not a bad unit. It's not made to be used underwater it's just there to protect against water. Go read the ip ratings system, it's made for protection not use. When are people going to understand this.

    Switched from a Sony xzs to the u11 yesterday. First while the u11 is larger and heavier it feels lighter and sleeker than the xzs. I got the 6gb version so much faster than the other. Also the red color is more of a candy red than a bold/deep red.

      Goran Petrovic - The 10 is a great phone, and was the most durable phone of 2016. I would not call the U11 water resistance problematic. Erica's phone is defective, but she has not gotten it wet. The phone she references was one phone out of hundreds of thousands. Mine has no trouble being under water. Let's not forget that the Galaxy S7 failed both it's water resistance tests.

    • @gogigp
      @gogigp 7 лет назад +1

      Altema22 I don't really care for water resistance, it's overhyped, in reality many of water resistant phones will be damaged with water sooner or later. What I care for and what I ment is drop resistance. The only objectively worthed resistance. The most often dmg for phones doesn't come from water, but from falls.

      I would love to see something like the one m8 again but with the black border minimised and a better camera. I agree, the glass back trend is very strange. Glass isn't as durable and imo has a poor in hand feel. I hate things getting greasy, if a manufacturer feels inclined to use glass, why don't they use frosted glass?

      the looks obviously sells. Manufacturers want to sell phones, so if more want waterproofing, wireless charging, shiny attractive looks instead of removable or big batteries, practical durable phones, they will give them what they want and earn even more from often broken screens and backs. Modern buyers are unwise, not manufacturers.

    Great work, as per usual. It is so nice to see that you did this, when several other youtubers couldn´t be bothered with the U11. Sure, there are a few that made some videos about this phone, but obviously wanted to do something else.
    So nice to see someone else that is ok without 2/1 ratio screen. About those capasitve buttons, I do a swipe motion so I roll my thumb over the botton edge when using them. Works great for me. When it comes to using headphones, for now I very happy with the usonic earbuds. I´ll probably buy some wireless when I want to upgrade. Very usefull to have noice cancelling earbuds with the phone.
    This is the first time I felt like I would need to use a case with a phone, so I bougt the Spigen clear case and I´m very happy with it.
    I hope more will try this phone and realize that less is more. A strength that HTC have had for many years is that Sense will stay snappy for a long time.
    Be Well.

    I had the same thing happen to my u11 after giving it a rinse. I had to send it back to HTC and they're repairing it for free as the seal was defective, but it's taken over a month as of now and the only update they'll give me is "we'll send you an email notification when we ship it back, please check back with us next week" . I had my Solar red for two weeks only. HTC"s repair center in Texas is a big fat mess right now.

    Hi Erica, the USB type C to 3.5 mm jack has a DAC built-in and I've been told that it improves the audio quality a lot. I am still positively sure that this phone features superior audio quality to most of the competitors : Samsung, Apple, etc. Only LG G6 uses a dedicated DAC. Apparently South Korea gets quad DAC while rest of the world 1*DAC. Still miles ahead of Samsung and Apple for which audio quality is just an afterthought.."Oh we forgot about that didn't we... What do we do now?" :))

    • @gogigp
      @gogigp 7 лет назад

      John C i don't know who told you that...U11 is way behind HTC 10 in terms of audio quality, only speakers are louder. Measurements say S8 beats U11 in audio quality and even loudness on audio output. G6 is even significantly better and htc 10 and V20...well, there is no comparison with them. Different league from U11.

      Goran Petrovic - You may want to check out the specifications. I'm looking at the data on the phones you mentioned right now. Between the U11, HTC 10, S8, and V20, the U11 actually comes out on top in everything but THD, in which it holds second place.
      Noise: - 94.1 dB
      Dynamic aic range: 94.1 dB
      THD: 0.0017
      IMD + noise: 0.0067
      Stereo crosstalk: - 94.5 dB
      Crosstalk takes a hit when the adapter is loaded down, but the U11 definetly does great when hooked to a sound system.
      The USonic headphones can't be directly compared because the other phones still use the old technology, but USonic easily outperformed my best headphones on the M8.

    I love this review. I had the HTC One and M8 and they we're amazing. The battery wasn't. But I love the HTC interface, the software, the look of the apps and the cameras are beautiful. I was planning on getting the Pixel 2 but I may get this now. Thank you!

    Hello Erica Griffin and thank for a great upload. I saw the bend test you mention in the video, but it's not a issue for me. I don't think htc did that on purpose. I think it has to do with the pressure frame why it failed. So if the the bend issue is a really big problem maby htc must remove it from future phones

    I've had the HTC U11 for about 1 month now, and I've disabled most (if not all) of the unique features of the phone, like Edge Sense, Blink Feed and other cutomizations. I put my phone in my front pocket when out of the house and I found Edge Sense was activating often. I didn't like Blink Feed (or whatever it was called) because it constantly wanted to update me on stories and information I didn't care about. I much prefer my Google Feed which does a good job of sending me interesting stories. Several times I was shopping and needed to quickly get into my phone for some information and blink feed kept wanting my attention. Very annoying.
    But the one thing I foudn that REALLY bothered me was that when Bluetooth is on, the phone wants to send all sound (input and output) to a BT device even when none is connected to it. I had a few people call me and I hung up on them becuase they were silent (I thought.) Also - I called a contactor three times, he answered but no one was there. I thought about it and turned off the BT on a hunch that was the issue, and it turned out I was right. Maybe there is a setting which controls this behavior in the phone, but I havn't found it. I trained myself to turn off the BT radio when I'm not using a BT headphone.
    And ya, the camera is pretty nice.
    Also - I wrapped my phone in a Spigen Rugged Armor HTC U11 case. It works. It fits snug, looks cool, and it no where near as "slippery" as the phone itself. It only covers one mic at the top of the case.

    Thank you for a great review! I love this phone as well. Just the right amount of features and a great software experience. I like the sound of both the dongle and the USonic. The audio experience, in my opinion, though not that of the LG V20, is more enjoyable than the Galaxy S8+. One question, what is time stamp and numbers for when you first launch the camera? Is it simply the amount of storage left or is it something else?

    Dear Erica! Thank you very much for this really thorough review, I was waiting for it for a long time! May I ask that how frequently did you trigger the edge sense accidentally? For example when changing grip on the phone or just holding it a bit harder for a more secure grip. Also as I watched some videos and read about the device, there are cases which are edge sense compatible, for example Spigen cases, but obviously you need to adjust the squeez sensitivity enable to make it work properly.

    I have very slight yellow tinting on the bottom edge of the screen. Was waiting for your review because you do a very good analysis on screen quality. Have you noticed any such tint on your screen. Phone not very popular so just a small thread on XDA regarding the issue. Awesome review btw.

    • @EricaGriffin

      +Nikden Rumba that should not be happening. It sounds like a backlight diffusion uniformity issue and probably affects a small number of panels. I'd exchange it if I were you.

    • @lostnik

      Erica Griffin thank you so much for the reply. I actually did try to return it but I can't seem to be able to show it to anyone. My wife doesn't see it and neither did the service center people. And if they don't approve it I can't replace it. I'm OCD about screens. Had a faulty OG Note, 2 faulty OnePlus ones and now this and I'm the only one who noticed the faulty screens 😊

      @EricaGriffin  7 лет назад +1

      +Nikden Rumba you sound just like me. Lol. Welcome to the club. Sometimes I don't bother asking them to see something they have no clue about. I just say I don't like it and want my money back. Then I go somewhere else and buy the same phone lol.

    • @lostnik
      @lostnik 7 лет назад

      Erica Griffin haha yes. Sounds familiar. Anyways since I can't return it or get it replaced, I'll stick with it for now. Got a bunch of accessories for it already. Since nobody sees what I can, I could potentially sell it at a good price later when the pixel XL 2 is released. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best phone to buy right now considering price and performance and the fact that I got a 6GB variant. Anyways, love your in-depth reviews and value your opinion a lot ✌️

    There are a few flaws to this phone I found...
    1. Front camera has no OIS or any stabilization at all. Very hard to self video.
    2. No way to change resolution of the display like you can on S8. You could get even better performance in games at 1080p.
    3. HTC should've gone for the LG G6-like display solution, higher screen ratio I mean.
    4. This is a nitpick but I guess the rear camera can benefit from a dual cam solution.
    5. Quad Dac anyone?
    6. Heart rate sensor, FM Radio and other random stuff maybe?
    That's it, really. Otherwise the epitome of what a smartphone should be.

    I am a die-hard htc fan but sad to say after having the m8, m9, and htc 10, which has been my favorite device in years, my next phone won't be an HTC. Partly due to me being on Verizon but also due to HTCs lack of marketing to sell this across all carriers and the lack of features you get for the same price as in other devices. Not trying to bask in htc but it's not surprising they needed Google to bail them out 1.1 billion dollars to keep them afloat. Maybe they will make a comeback I. The next year or two? I won't wait around on my htc 10 though to find out. Same battery as my htc 10 in a bigger size device, same body style as the 10, minus a .3 inch larger screen, and the only thing unique you can come up with it's the squeezable frame?? Get it together HTC.
