Winning the crown for the best smartphone of 2017 is still a tall order with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S8, the LG G6, and now the new HTC U11.
2017 is a very interesting year for flagships. We have companies experimenting with taller displays and new aspect ratios, and we're one digital assistant short of forming a basketball team. All of this is cool, I mean, We need flagships to continue pushing the bar o innovation, but it's clear that some of these features are still solutions in search of a problem.
If you're looking for a more conventional approach, there's pretty much just one flagship this year that does address some real world problems in a couple of interesting ways. Watch our HTC U11 review.

Got mine 6 days early. Love the camera and no-bloat lightening fast UI

Can you fit the dongle and headphones jack inside the pocket?
For me, audio is good enough, don't mind the head phone jack. But the speaker is plenty loud for my kids. Camera is really that great. No kidding. I'm comparing it with my micro 3/4 Panasonic GF7. It's better at recording video and taking selfie than GF7, and still hold a candle for other shots. GF7 is better at capturing moving objects. So I will have U11 take selfie photos and recording videos when my family are out. Taking selfie is fantastic and so easy using the main camera with squeeze action. Forget about the front facing camera, the main camera takes selfie so much better that it even has wider view angle and super low light capability and dim sites. I have all HTC flagship phones since M7, and U11 speaker is the loudest, almost twice as loud as HTC 10 and has more clarity too. The battery is pretty good especially in games. It doesn't get hot during gaming and doesn't draw battery like crazy. Credits to Qualcomm I guess.
I connect the dongle with my old headphone and carry them together. So I don't lose it or forget it. Yes it's very small, but leave it inside pocket alone is a easy way to lose it for me.
No, it's the International 6G 128GB unlocked version.
Not gonna lie, when Jaime held it at a certain angle with the screen off, it really does look nice at all angles.
Overall, I like this phone a lot. I'll have to reserve final judgement when I see one myself, but if you've ordered one, you probably won't be bummed out.
I'm just reserved on the usefulness of Edge Sense over the long term and the substitution of the headphone jack with a proprietary solution over USB-C that, while nice, is in some ways, a step back.
It's not my absolute favorite, but if you want 16:9 with an 835, perhaps this might be a good choice.

Whenever I make a comment like my OP, I sometimes get nothing but fanboy cruft.
It's beyond frustrating when I make a valid point and fanboys think I'm paid, when in reality, I am nowhere near famous enough to even get company attention.
Finally someone who is smart enough to summarize the justification of buying this phone as ''future proof 835 packed in 16:9 screen.'' I think thats all about it aswell. I will just wait 3-4 more months to see all of the flagships and pick one that has s835, a good panel, good battery life and a 16:9 aspect ratio since I'm only about multimedia content and games in phones. That is unless Google Play Store developers update every single app to fit on Galaxy S8 and S8+ screen ratio, which I see is unlikely. The Xperia XZ Premium is probably going to the way I want. It even has dual front-firing stereo speakers. I'm already sick of seeing ''bezelless'' bezelled phones lol.

I think sticking with 16:9 a little longer is a logical move at least until 2:1 is better supported.

My last HTC was a M9. I've ordered a Silver U11. Look forward to using it as my daily driver.

I dont have a headphone jack and its really not a big deal. I mean I get everything done same as always,the only time it fucks me over is every once in awhile I'll be buzzed at a cookout or something and have the perfect song in mind and go over to the speakers just to suddenly realize I need the dongle. Then I'm standing there asking somebody to play the song with their phone like a dumbass. The average person who doesnt know much about phones thinks you're either drunk or extremely stupid when you tell them your phone doesnt have the headphone jack. lol so actually with that in mind,I guess as long as theres a choice I cant see why anyone would wanna choose a phone without it lmfao.
I've been on the Bluetooth side for audio for about a year and I don't regret getting rid of wires. More people should switch

I'm about to buy a pair myself because even though the wires aren't really a problem to me,every once in awhile they do get in my way,tangle,somehow get caught on something or just plain short out so it's gonna be nice to just do away with them altogether. It doesn't solve the aux issue though unless there's Bluetooth on the speakers.
6:01 phone has been awake the whole time. there is something that is running in the background killing the battery.

ahmed kamal Yes saw that too. Other reviews of the phone have reported strong battery life, comfortably lasting a full day and about 5hrs SOT, which is surprising considering the smallish battery and LCD panel.
It's only for filming the video. Can't be unlocking the phone each time while it's propped up. That being said, it could be a bug as the phone wasn't on during the hardware filming ^JR
Pocketnow yeah you can see how the screen on doesn't align with "awake" If the screen has been on it would have showed but the processor was awake the whole time.
About the battery, on your stats I noticed that your phone was awake all the time even with screen was off. That explains your poor battery life, some app is keeping your phone awake even when the screen is off

Yeah I noticed that too, and reviews from less well known channels say screen on time is about 4~5 hours, so I can't really believe Jaime's stat here
We need to keep the phone awake when filming because we can't be wiping the screen off every time as it's propped up. It doesn't represent what I mention after 2 weeks of testing ^JR.
That response is a little bit confusing Jaime and I think you didn't get my point.
When I said "awake" I was talking about the state of the phone in terms of being idle or processing something. From your battery stats, you can compare the times the phone had the screen off and the times the phone was "awake" (doing something). From that, the graph of "awake" shows that your phone never went into doze and was always "processing" something even when you had the screen off (not actually using the phone with the display on).
I will give an example, let's say you are listening to spotify. In terms of battery stats that will mean that your screen will be off but the phone will be "awake" all that time because is "processing" music. It won't go into doze as the cpu is keeping the phone "awake".
Gotcha. Sadly it must be software bug. Wasn't doing anything that lasted the whole time the phone was off the charger. ^JR

This phone grew on me, to be honest. I own an HTC 10, and I don't understand why everyone hates HTC. They have a je ne sais quoi that you can't get with other Android phone manufacturers. Previously, I've had a Samsung Galaxy S5, and I've hated every second of it. Samsung loves to load bullshit on its phones and bog it down after a year of usage, and then deny that it happens. Literally everyone in my class who has an S6 or even S7 complains that it runs hot or too slowly. My HTC 10 has superior audio, a great camera (that even my iPhone-toting friends say is actually really good), a battery that (usually) lasts me the entire day, and, most importantly, responsive software that doesn't make me feel like I always have to wait for it to catch up to me-- unlike my previous Samsung phone. The HTC 11 isn't quite the 10, but I'm glad HTC hasn't strayed too far from the 10's principles. I just wish it had a headphone jack, lol.

4 years on and I still think that's HTC's most influential phone to date.
i loved my m8 and i just got the u11 and trust me when i say the usonic earbuds are very good. I feel like everybody undervalues them since they are inbox earbuds. i don't feel the need for a headphone jack with this phone.
M8 is probably the best phone that I ever used. I regret giving mine to my sister (she still uses it...lol). I'm still looking for that M8 magic.
never gave up on HTC. They have always done one thing better than anyone else....Built solid phones.

I'd give HTC a chance in a heartbeat. I think all of their devices are unconventional and amazingly unique. I have a Galaxy S8+ and absolutely love it, but it's everywhere now. I don't see HTC's at all (probably because of their past sub-par cameras and now poor battery life) but they just stand out more because of that. I adore the U11 and even the U Ultra.

the final choice of getting an upgrade is my dealing with sprint themselves, with all the extra bonuses they offered in reducing the price. the final total price of the phone, for me, is $306 USD.. if I could get the S8 for similar price, I would of instead of. I recognize the issues lots have pointed out. the 3.5mm thing really jerks my chain, but for little over 300 dollars, for a flagship? I value my money more then a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Well I just got mine yesterday, loving it, keyboard kinda sucks wayy to big. but nothing a mod can't fix.
Anyway, I got mine for 306, I got 150 dollars off for pre-ordering, and get a -10$ a month credit for being a loyal sprint customer on my current plan. and it's final price was 306 for me, now this IS NOT A LEASE contract, this is a pay monthly contract.
now this -10 dollars is only valid as long as the plans contract stay's the same, but it hasn't changed in over 8 years. and it isn't going to change in the next 2. Sprint probably offered this deal before the S8 came out too, but I wasn't looking for a phone then.
Number 1 choice for me if I needed to upgrade (only bought a HTC 10 in November)

About the battery life: have you considered that probably the battery let-down is due to the fact that there is some app or services draining all your juice? Your battery stats shows phone is awake even when the screen is off, pointing toward a wakelock
Is it worth buy over the s8?I do think that because in time sens UI does a better job then s8 or g6 i guess.

Still would love to know how the sound over Bluetooth is in comparison to the other flagships. Is it only a matter of how good the DACs are on the device being connected to? If we're forced to use the bundled headset, a dongle, or Bluetooth, this seems to be a critical question.
I usually hate jaime's reviews, but this was a really well made review, giving a good perspective on what to expect from this phone. I am now considering getting u11 later this year
Only one question: with the adapter for headphones, would it cause issues in the pocket? Would it even fit in a pocket (headphones plus adapter) ? That stupid adapter is ridiculously long? Why? I've been an HTC fan since 2008 with HTC Aria and now I'm using HTC M9. I would say that I'm happy to know that HTC has finally stepped up their game but still debating because I wonder how's the Google Pixel 2 is going to play out.

Hi .... i was just wondering ... i don't like in the US.... and the version of the U11 here is the 128gb 6g ram... how does that compare to the rest of the phones? and even to the 64gb 4g ram one ...
The amount of force required to active the edge sense can be customised. Just have to find the right amount of force so that there are no accidental "squeezeses" and is still comfortable in your hand when you do want to activate it.
Why the review sounds so negative and boring? This is one of the best phones out there and I don't even like HTC. I think they have a hit here and it will sell well.

zorkor no they won't there sales wasn't good anyway and you remove the headphone jack lol also people are buying the s8 and g6 and are going to see what the LG v30 and Note 8 and the new one plus phones has to offer I also think people especially in Asian countries with buy the Sony xz premium over the htcu11. the htcu11 mite so good in Taiwan.

Alright everyone. Given the two topics of heated discussion, this is what we have to say:
1. If you can live without a headphone jack, awesome! Happy for you. Our job is to point out that you're actually buying a flagship that doesn't include this feature, since other flagships that cost the same do offer it. We do mind the proprietary turn this is taking because these dongles are proprietary. If you have Moto Z dongle, it won't work on a U11. Your new U Sonic headphones won't work on another phone. Lose them, and it's $100. Yeah.. Sadly our job is to point it out since our commitment is with you, the viewer,.. not the OEM.
2. Sorry, but we can't sit here and praise a product for good battery life if our results are average. The definition of Average is that it's "Ok," which means we're not calling it bad, nor are we calling it great. It performs pretty much like the Galaxy S8 which has the same battery size and processor. If other reviewers had a different experience, good for them. We have two HTC U11s, a Sprint US variant and a Taiwan retail dual-SIM model. Our experience is about the same. We've tested this phone in 3 carriers, two countries, and for two weeks. We have tests with that whole awake thing active, and if you see my twitter, there are days without the awake thing, and performance is the same, which is the reason we think it's a bug. This has already been shared with HTC and their battery life is about the same.
Hope this clarifies a few things. We stand by what we've reported on our video. We are still recommending the phone, as none of what we've reported is wrong or bad. These are our opinions. Go out and buy one and let us know what your experience is, as reviews are subjective. Your mileage will vary.

I'm getting sick of some reviewers bashing the phone just because it doesn't have a Samsung logo or a curved "Infinity" display which is ridiculous cause what's the point on a review if you gonna praise the device YOU like even if the other one is superior. Not all of us love gimmicky bloated phones like Samsung. Btw the U11 has been DESTROYING the S8's ass in speed tests in multiple videos here in YT also keep an eye out for the new Sony XZ flagship that thing is also wicked fast!! But HTC for me, they have been trying really hard even with all the negativity from media and have prevailed, I appreciate that.

Got it yesterday. The camera is awesome.
one thing i really liked about the phone. zoom in video mode also increase the volume.
I'm using the M9 and I love it. However, the camera is pretty lackluster so when I heard that the U11 has the best camera on the market I instantly wanted it. My main issues with the U11 is that I'm really not a fan of the mega glossy look and the loss of the duel front facing speakers and headphone jack.
although I have been holding out with my M9 for true front firing stereo to return, I think I'm psyched for this phone. I'm actually elated I waited this long to upgrade. I mostly use Bluetooth headphones and car stereo connectivity so I don't mind not using wired headphones and if I used older 3.5 mm headphones I would keep the dongle attached and possibly neatly taped with electrical tape. A minor issue. I love HTC sense in all formats as it adapts to my surroundings so I think I'll love this even more. Going to get it before the months end.

If they put a headphone jack, OIS to the front camera and a tad bigger battery, I think most reviewers would definitely love this phone.

The battery is charging very slowly on mine, tried a new cable and a new charger and cleaning out the charging port but no luck
This is gonna be my next phone to replaced the One M7. It's about time.
Maybe I will miss the headphone jack at first but just a matter of getting used. Everything else is superb, no doubt.

Oddly, the display works fine when you're using polarized sunglasses in everything except the camera. It goes completely dark for the camera for reasons I don't understand. HTC 10 didn't do this. ^JR

Thx for your very positive review of the HTC U11. I hope it generates interest & sales for HTC. The headphone jack is on it's way out. Apple 8 will be another 2017 flagship w/o it (for the 2nd yr in a row). USB connection instead of traditional jack allows advanced sound technology featuresnow and in the future.. As far as wanting to listen with earbuds or headphones when charging- use Bluetooth wireless earbuds or wireless headphones. FYI, I use an HTC 10 as my daily driver and plan to upgrade to the HTC U11 soon. Peace.

HTC has the best UI experience period and that's always been the case. I've had and S6,7 and right now an LG G6 but honestly none match HTC's ease of use.

I'm really glad I picked up the U11. The only flagship left I haven't owned is the OnePlus 5. But that's only because of OnePlus still not catering to any of the hundreds of millions of Verizon, Sprint and U.S Cellular customers in 2017. And as a person who has bought them all with my own money, I can say with certainty that the U11 is vastly superior as a complete package device. Everything about it is REALLY good. Other flagships have compromises that the U11 just doesn't have.
Interesting but do you think this Compact mirror/puff looking fingerprint magnet will sell better than other phones in its $800 range? Seems like the upcoming OnePlus 5 will offer the same if not better performance and better price in a month...

Not having a headphone jack on the iPhone is what stopped me from switching to iOS. So it is a bummer to see it gone in an otherwise great phone. Though, it looks like the features on this phone may outweigh that issue.

I work with the general public and see over 300 costumers a day and never seen anyone carry a HTC phone. Sad because HTC makes wonderful phones
It is hands down the most beautiful phone I have ever seen.....on the back at least.
I have an iPhone 6S Plus and once in a great while I use the headphone jack. I mostly use my LG Infinim 910 Bluetooth headphones. And as far as charging and listening to music I don't like to be next to my phone when I do because it limits movement and there's to many cords. Oh and my car automatically detects my iPhone when I get in and start over Bluetooth. The convenance of being in my pocket and music plays is a win. So for my lifestyle the HTC U11 can work for me just fine.

I want the u 11. Despite what anyone's says it's a good solid phone. My only complaint about the software was the messaging keyboard with the HTC 10. The keyboard would disappear after hitting the send button.

HTC lost me somewhere between the M8 and M9. I really liked those speakers.
People talk about the usonic headphones as they justified the lack of the headphone jack. Sony years ago made a phone that also came with noise cancelling earbuds using microphones inside them AND did it using the 3.5mm jack

HTC came a long way except for the design which looks a bit outdated already big bezels up front (there could have been so much more display with a little less bezel) and that super shiny metallic like backpanel isn't my tea but I surely have to give them credit for the camera improvements and the IP rating
the adapter itself has a DAC . I would sacrifice headphone jack for better audio quality.but then the problem of charging the mobile while using headphone comes..😕
Unfortunately the jack adapter supplied is not higher quality. Hopefully that's fixed by third party options, but I would imagine those won't be cheap.

I've always been a fan of HTC. To be honest, I do miss the headphone Jack but other than that, I love it. It's the best phone out to me.
