  • Our HTC U11 review is here and as is always the case, we give it to you straight. Is this the best HTC phone in a while? Well, the HTC 10 was a good phone, so yeah, it's up there with that. Is it better than the Galaxy S8 or LG G6 or even the Pixel? Eh, that's up for you to decide. To me, it falls short of all three, but that doesn't mean this isn't a really good overall phone.

    So: 1) The U11 has an awesome camera; 2) It has snappy, fast and, in your own words, "flawless" performance; 3) It has a battery that "lasts all day"; 4) It has the impressive 3D audio focus feature when recording video; 5) It has, in your own words, audio that is "as good as it gets"; 6) It has admittedly impressive, noise-cancelling, in-box/included earphones that deliver great sound; 7) It has the "Edge Sense" feature that, in your own words, should "stick around" and that other manufacturers should copy; 8) It has, in your own words, the quickest and most accurate fingerprint scanner around; 9) You can get it UNLOCKED and it works on all major carriers; and 10) It's still $100 cheaper than an S8, YET you still say that it "falls short of all three (S8, G6 and Pixel)" because it has larger bezels? OK.
    Do the phones that have smaller bezels also have dual speakers and/or have the entire phone act as a speaker for clearer and louder external audio? Don't you think that that's something that should be considered as to why the bezels are still present? I just can't see how the U11 simply having larger bezels relegates it to "falling short of all three," especially considering all the other great features it includes. Seems really silly.

      I'm glad you agree, Kunal Tiku. His conclusion just didn't make any sense to me. Although, I appreciate his review and opinion.

      Naldy Diaz We must also congratulate him for at least posting a balanced review unlike other so called big reviewers who have a hidden agenda running against HTC. His review was way better than them.

      Have you seen High Tech Traveler's review of both the U11 and the S8? I think those are very balanced ones, as well.

      I also mentioned that it does the big things right and has a bunch of small issues that make the difference in 2017. Because everyone has a good camera, performance, battery life, etc. HTC's problems are an out of date design, bad button placements on the front and side, a less-than-pleasurable in hand feel when compared to others, a tired Android skin, and lack of carrier availability (which is huge in the US). So yeah. It has a lot going for it. But as I mentioned from the open, it's the little things that matter these days and if trying to standout is by putting a mirror on the back of your phone and adding squeeze functionality, then yeah, I'm not sure how this phone wins.

      Droid Life that's subjective. I like how clean it is, and don't have a problem with bezels either, it gives you something to hold on to without touching the screen.

    • @DroidlifeDL
      @DroidlifeDL  7 лет назад +4

      Totally subjective! But I'd also fault the front button setup, side button setup, width of the phone, too, as issues. Probably subjective too, but they are things that HTC has done wrong (in my opinion) for a long time now.

    I got this phone 2 days ago and to be honest, I really like it. battery life is best I've seen on any phone so far, camera is great on the back. The front camera is just ok. Screen looks great and never did I think I would want an AMOLED. As far as the look of the front I don't mind it at all since it's all functional, let's start that it's 16:9 and you always use the full screen no matter what the app is or watching video. Bottom chin, you have navigation keys so they don't take up your screen, there is also a speaker chamber to make it sound great as does the top with the tweeter. The sound that comes out of this phone is great and when you plug those in box earphones, you get blown away.

      i think any of the new devices with the 10 nm chips in them will be pretty decent with battery life Mario ,
      my new s8 + on my first battery mt before i recharged it i checked the battery stats and screen on time ..... i thought the device was faulty due to high screen on time reading , even today i had 5 hours + sot with 48 % battery left .......... absolutely destroys my previous G5,6p, note 4 in battery life.
      very impressed with this new generation of chips .

    Well since most apps aren't updated to fit the 18:9 ratio. I won't knock HTC for not using it. other than that this probably the best Android phone so far this year. I just hate the majority won't know anything about it. Good review none the less, this my first time watching DroidLife

    Bought this phone over the weekend. Lighting quick, phone drives my bose h/set like a champ(keep that adaptor attached). Camera now matches the best out there. Htc are probably the quickest OEM for updates. It's always function over form for me, but I agree the shiney back is not to my taste

      Design is the downside to this phone, so yeah, like I mentioned, if that doesn't bug you, this is going to be a phone to consider. It does all of the big things right.

  • @priyo4388

    Great device. I dont care about 18:9 ratio because most of the apps and games dosen't support it so traditional 16:9 ratio is totally fine in 2017.

  • @joeypinili
    @joeypinili 7 лет назад +4

    Ok i watched the entire video. Reviewer has some valid points there, considering HTC had previously lackluster performace year after year. But this year, I think for the part that matters, HTC nailed it bigtime. They're back to compete with the big leagues. The one thing that S8 has the upper hand is the front camera's autofocus. Its miles ahead of anyone right now with fixed focus FC. It's just makes all your selfies sharp and color accurate. I love it! I hope everyone copies it from now on. But I digress.. I have to disagree with the reviewers comment on design though, it doesn't feel a year behind everyone elses. I prefer it's simplicity especially keeping the 16:9 aspect ratio. You avoid that stupid pillar boxes when watching all the general contents made by the entire world. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also glass backs are kinda cool nowadays, look at apple trying to imitate glass by making that highly abrasive jet black color. The one thing i'm really impressed by HTC is the battery life. They're like apple really. Software and hardware optimizations are key to longevity. They know how to balance it with the U11. It's not any more the ampere rating, but it's how you manage it. My S7 edge even though it has 3600mah battery i totally fucking hate the battery life. Even on stand by without any AOD the battery just goes down like no one else's business. Anyways looking forward to my HTC U11 this week. Hopefully it lives up to expectations! Kudos HTC U11. Well done! Keep it up!

    i dont care about the litle things ... samsung has a stupid placement fingerprint scanner and the other unlock methods are so unreliable and not secure ... thats more important than the small things that htc has wrong they are unotaceble for me

    Been watching every review when they phone first was introduced. It seems like every reviewer(OK 90% of them) copy each other and say it is about a year behind or 2016 phone. I had the LG G5, Nexus 6P, Pixel and now this phone. I feel this phone has a lot going for it. The best probably not. But what phone is? I like the sound quality when talking. The screen color and the speakers are really good but I liked my 6P speakers better, The camera is great. I would say it is equal to the Pixel. I even blow up pictures to 8X10 and they are awesome! I am not a Sammy guy even though I did own the GS3, 4 5 active and 6 active but hate all the extra bloat and gimmicky stuff that we don't use. I actually use the squeeze for screen shots and flashlight and use the power button to launch camera. This phone is tied for the top 3 IMHO

    • @DroidlifeDL
      @DroidlifeDL  7 лет назад +3

      I'm only saying this phone is a year behind in design. Not that HTC has to follow each trend, but the front of this phone looks like it was made in 2015, not 2017. When Samsung and LG, and likely Apple, are pushing design boundaries, there is a reason this phone looks boring up front.

    • @nic_ccc3366
      @nic_ccc3366 7 лет назад +4

      Assuming the biggest issue with the design is the bezels, the reason HTC couldn't go bezeless is because they don't make their own screens, unlike Samsung and LG. It wouldn't have been cost effective for them to get bespoke panels, and would have increased the price (this year, HTC finally made their phone cheaper than Samsung's). Apple can definitely afford to get their display manufacturer to specify panels to their new design in the next iphone.

    • @JarredSutherland

      They could easily afford it, they just don't want reduced profit margins on each device. Basically the operating status of every corporation (especially Apple) out there. Still, you need to produce something that is appealing to the masses and if you're not, you can't really scratch your head wondering why few wanted to buy it.

    First off - nice review. I appreciate the comments on the subjective parts of the phone - I can read the specs anywhere. I'm buying the u11 to replace my Pixel XL. I should receive it Wed in the mail. I LOVE my pixel, but my thoughts are that the u11 addresses some of my annoyances with the pixel while retaining the fast software experience. The u11 adds water resistance, much improved audio that is badly needed, newer processor, faster storage (2.1), more storage (64gb), and I actually think I'll use the squeeze feature. I'll still have a great camera, but I know I'm losing fast updates. I'm weary of those anyway after Android N jacked up my 6p. The pixel looks really outdated and you know what? Who cares..

    If this phone Had a sort like LG g6 or Samsung s8 it really would be a no-brainer.
    But it seems like those two are the only manufacturers that can do displays like that currently..
    Lets see next year if that changes

    accidentally came across youre channel and I can honestly say I won't be subscribing or watching anymore videos. i know my opinions dont really matter and I had my own choice to watch it or not.. but after watching I realised that you praise the U11 more than 90% of the video then said you wont buy it coz it doesn't have the same long screen of the g6 or s8. In my opinion external audio, good quality earphones (rather than the fake AKG earphones from Samsung), fingerprint scanner, user interface, user experience, CAMERA, edge sense actually being useful unlike bixby button..All these point out to HTC being a much more superior phone than s8 or g6.

    • @DroidlifeDL

      Wait, so because I didn't call it the best phone ever, you won't be coming back? So that's the only way you hang around, is if my opinion precisely matches the one you have decided upon? Gonna be a tough life if that's how you approach all things.

    • @georgebaratheon8472
      @georgebaratheon8472 7 лет назад

      maybe, just maybe Samsung is paying them money 😃😃 U11 is better option if I'm gonna buy the new phone, it has smoother performance, on par camera with s8, the best audio experience with or without headphones and it has unique feature that no other flagship has yet, remember iPhone 6s and it's 3d touch? not a big deal but people loved it... why most of the popular youtube channels can't fall in love with edge sense? it makes no sense... :)))

  • @hemanthkakarla2099

    Fair review but I would like to add something important witch should be taken under consideration.When you have the best sound , best camera,excellent hardware optimization and some unique approach(useful or not) with a better price it means that is not just an "ordinary" shell like others more expensive devices...like ...lets say iphone.

    If carriers were smart they'd scoop this up and sell a ton. For me, it's the phone to beat so far and I'm definitely only looking at this one so far as worthy enough to replace my nexus 6p.

    • @DroidlifeDL
      @DroidlifeDL  7 лет назад +1

      Not to be a downer, but the reason this isn't on carriers is because they haven't been able to sell HTC phones for years, that's how this works. No one wants them even if they are good phones. They want Apple, Samsung, sometimes LG, and that's pretty much it.

    • @atl3630
      @atl3630 7 лет назад

      Yeah, HTC really screwed up with the M9. Things were good until then. Next the 10 comes out, is well reviewed, but nobody buys it for a bunch of reasons (mainly high price). Now the u11 shows up and isn't being distributed in stores. All of this is bad for sales.

    • @mikldude9376

      while the 10 may have been generally a good phone , imo the problem was that if you put it with a bunch of competing models on a bench for viewing the 10 just did not have a leg to stand on , it was fairly plain to look at , and other brands loaded their devices with kit ........ i dont know how many times in phone shops i saw the 10 and kept right on walking to the next device.
      the 11 is imo much like what samsungs s6 was to the s7 , the s6 was basically a good phone , and the s7 was a much more user friendly and polished model with more features, and the same could be said for the 11..
      from my perspective the 11 is quite good , but htc does do things that some people dont take kindly too and may effect sales , the deletion of the 3.5 mm earphone jack for one ,
      and while battery life will probably be pretty good with the 835 , by the same token htc will never go out of their own way to to try and put a bigger battery in .
      battery was a big consideration in my purchase and im sure in many others .

    I like HTC phones and wanted to get the HTC 10 but sprint (and most other carries as I know) got rid of their subsidized phone prices, which I refuse to spent $7-800 on a phone. So I had been using the same phone a HTC Evo 4g lte for like 5 years until last month when I got the Galaxy S8 cause sprint was running a promotion that allowed me to get it only for $200.

    u talk about the bezels nd the phone looking outdated...those bezels are like resonance chambers for the speakers...that's the reason why the audio is so amazing..s8 nd g6 hv small bezels nd that's why they sound crap! small bezels might look good but it won't impress u after a few months of use....what will continue to impress u is the experience u get with those dual stereo speakers ,I'd tk function over form anyday...u11 is the best flagship of 2017...without a doubt!!

    do the external speakers sound better than the s8, I find the s8 sounds very screechy @ trebles.
    also can you activate the flashlight on the U11 from locked screen in your pocket , that would be super handy especially trying open your garage door @ night or camping etc?

      And yep, you can turn Edge Sense into a flashlight shortcut. Video shows it in action.

    As you said in the comments the reason this phone is not on more than 1 carrier is that HTC phones have not been good for years and thus have not sold. The U 11 is on Sprint so if I were interested I would have to change carriers. IMO this phone is not worth that. Im still rocking and lovin my really blue Pixel XL.

    • @trnty427
      @trnty427 7 лет назад

      Incorrect. HTC phones are as good as the next, it's sshady business practices with the carriers from other OEMs and minimal marketing why HTC phones haven't sold that well...this is simply business 101.

    talk about trying to sell this phone. since when does droid life sell out like this.
    you didn't mention the fact that the camera always over exposed, carrying a dongle every time you want to listen to your own headphone or the fact that is an inconvenient to not be able to listen to your music at night and charge your phone at the same time.

    Dear HTC FOR your next phone, please follow whatever design trend that Samsung does and then you'll make everyone happy thanks. But let's ignore that Sharp and Xiaomi did the same minimal bezel thing already and no one was asserting that other manufacturers need to do the same thing, nope, just follow Samsung HTC.

    • @DroidlifeDL
      @DroidlifeDL  7 лет назад

      Well, Sharp makes trash phones and Xiaomi made a limited number of the phone you are referencing, sooooooo...

    • @Tr4llf4zz
      @Tr4llf4zz 7 лет назад

      Droid Life what does that have to do with the design approach being implemented before others took to the same path? Unless you're implying the validity or desirability of a feature is based on the merits of a device or brand as opposed to how said feature stands on its own. If so, then that's a double standard if I've ever seen one. Then again we saw the same thing with wireless charging (Droid DNA had it), Water resistance (Sony had it in their lineup), etc. It wasn't until Samsung implemented them that they became an expectation or defacto standard a smartphone should meet. Ah well I'm not surprised, the Samsung and Apple infatuation and association runs deep.

    • @DroidlifeDL
      @DroidlifeDL  7 лет назад

      The suggestion was that those were two phones that no one knew about because of who made them. The idea that HTC's old design is getting called out now is because we're actually seeing bigger, more available manufacturers producing phones with the design you are referencing. This isn't just a Samsung thing. LG is right there. Apple is largely expected to do something similar. These companies are pushing smartphone design forward while HTC, who has been playing from well behind for years, is falling further behind.

    • @Tr4llf4zz
      @Tr4llf4zz 7 лет назад

      Droid Life that's the thing. That design change was pushed forward prior to AppleSung and LG. HTC was not guilty when other companies (non-AppleSung) went towards this rehashed idea of smaller bezels. So it doesn't matter who starts a trend, if it isn't AppleSung doing it, other manufacturers won't be expected to follow. So in conclusion HTC needs to be a follower now. The humor in all of this bezel craze is that manufacturers have painted themselves into a corner. There's no going back to increasing bezel sizes ever again. Next year HTC (if they're still around), is going to get dinged for not following the 18:9 aspect ratio "trend" nor doing enough to stand out as well.

    I just recently received my pre-order HTC U11 Tuesday. The first day with our was excellent, however the next day I started getting a "use USB as charging supply" message when plug plugged in to aux in my vehicle. I also wasn't able to skip track on car dash like I use to before I start receiving the message. I called htc costumer service and told them my issue, and they say it was a bug. we went through a series of test and reboots. the issue still remained. I was told that I would have to wait for a software update that may or may not fix the problem. So to say the least I'm very frustrated. thinking of returning the phone. any help with this issue HTC world?

      Droid Life you wanna know what else is funny? The US smartphone market is toast. Anyone other than AppleSung don't stand a chance at being successful and that'll never change. So no matter what HTC, LG, or anyone else does, the masses will always pick up an Apple or Samsung. Curious though, where was this clamoring for smaller bezels prior to Samsung implementing them?

      Ive looked up alot of reviews and within the adapter its self they've added some extra bass booster or something to improve sound. And with all earphones you get noise cancelation. Suposed to be increadable sound from the U11 from what ive heard. The main speakers are supposed to be good as well.

Now let's get straight to the point I could sense that vibe in u while u were reviewing U11. U wanted to praise the phone bcoz of its unique n distinctive features but did not do that properly, eventually u did explain things with a heavy heart otherwise u know credibility takes a hit. This happens when ur own personal bias n liking towards a particular brand overtakes the final judgement but I must also congratulate u for giving a balanced review unlike those so called big reviewers who have a hidden agenda running against HTC.Your review was far better than other influential reviewers.
