2:28 The cabin he is running to is really Clint’s cabin up in Burney/Castle area in NorCal. My Uncle owned the property next door and was a caretaker for the place. He personally washed those windows with vodka on film day to reduce glare and streaks. Shocked you can’t see dozens of grazing cows in the cabin shots haha
I'm not an engineer, but given that stealth fighters have a questionable (at best!) aerodynamic profile, I struggle to see how you could have a stealth fighter that could go at Mach 6. If someone can explain to me why that is, or isn't possible, or what the max capability of a stealth fighter could be, I'd love to hear it. I love learning about engineering.
@@nathanwilliams2152I mean, the A-12/YF-12/SR-71/M-21 was technically stealth and went beyond Mach 3. But I think it's mostly due to the fact that it flew so high and the coating that it used also worked as a radar-absorbent coating.
Nice to see this reaction finally made it to YT. Like Gonky, I watched this movie as a kid for the airplane content, and... well... that aspect of the movie doesn't hold up as well as, say, Top Gun or Final Countdown. It's still a pretty decent spy story though, especially for its portrayal of the Soviets as clever, competent opponents who keep the pressure on Gant all the way from Moscow to the end of the movie - never more than one short step behind in figuring out the plan.
Same. Watched it in the theater with my dad. Decent spy thriller, but trailers made it out to be more about the flying. Appreciate it more as an adult.
The movie was based on the first of the Mitchell Gant series of Spy Novels by Craig Thomas, a Welsh Author...this was meant to take place in the 1975 time period. It mentioned the MiG-25 defection, and the original MiG-31 Firefox is described as an improved MiG-25. This was before the MiG-31 Foxhound was released to public viewing. The movie was fairly faithful to the book, and where they picked up Gant was Alaska....which help explained his ability to speak Russian and have Russian ancestory. I don't recall if his mother was a white Russian and escaped from the revolution which Gant would be the right age for... since the novel was published in 1977.
I don't know why I never thought of this! Major Mover!! You guys are KILLING ME! Your movie banter is on par with Mystery Science Theater 3000. You guys remember that?
I read ages ago that the actor in the smart uniform that "wakes" Eastwood from his flashback was shot dead trying to stop a street robbery in 'Frisco before it was released. Sad he never got to enjoy further success. RIP.
I was born and raised in Poland - the depiction of life under communism is spot on. Even the grime and decay of apartments and squalid buildings are EXACTLY how I remember them . Not to mention constant surveillance and intrusivity of the system into people's lives.
I can’t believe they made all those techno thriller movies in the 80’s but nobody bothered to make the ultimate techno thriller. Red Storm Rising. To this day it be a bad ass thing to see on the big screen.
I never realized there was an extended cut of this movie! Apparently the one I watched was missing bunch of scenes, including pretty much all of the training.
TV versions of movies often added scenes to pad the run time so that with commercials it would be an almost 3 hour slot. Usually the scenes were just dialogue or secondary character stuff that didn't make it into the final film. On some occasions, they would actually go back and film additional scenes for the TV version if the film was a success. The original Halloween did that.
@@jamesk9321 The other approach was to cut them down to about 90 minutes, so that they'd fit in a two-hour slot instead. Cuts would sometimes be necessary to take out some sex-'n'-violence that wasn't suitable for TV anyway.
We absolutely had that exact blue step van... The Avionics Specialist Flight was 'Red 4' at Kadena. On midshift they let us sleep in the back of it, providing all the work was done, so they always knew where we were if they needed us.
Here's a crazy fact for you. The main lake at the beginning of this movie is called, "Baluga Lake" and it's in my hometown of Homer, Alaska. And i didn't stumble on words. It's right in the middle of the city. You can look it up on google earth if you don't believe me. Back in the 1980s the tree line around the lake hid the surrounding town from view. If someone drove you there blindfolded, dropped you off and left, you would think you were in the middle of nowhere when in fact a 15-20 minute walk in either direction would have landed you in a bustling fishing town. That's another cool fact about it. Allot of big names come from that small town including several boats from "Deadliest Catch", the guys who run the time bandit's father was from Homer (in fact, he was a friend of my dad's) as well as the musician "Jewel" who would occasionally sing at some of the local establishments with her family and didn't seem to like me that much (thought i had too much energy. 🤪 Again, that lake is right in the middle of that city. Nowadays it's built up enough that the tree line no longer hides the surrounding city though.
Moscow to Kazan and to the foot of the Urals is one hell of a drive. I've done Kazan to St. Petersburg by train on multiple legs before, but never in a car. That was one amazing trip - up from the lower Volga region to to St. Petes.
I really loved this movie. But when I saw it as a teenager and I realized that the subway scenes were filmed in Vienna, I was soo disappointed! Of course the couldn't film it in Moscow! The aircraft looked really cool.
Ever heard of the movie, "Called to Duty"? It is out now on digital rental. The film seems perfect for Mover Ruins Movies with the amount of corny. I had to do a doubletake, because they even spliced Top Gun: Maverick footage into it.
I'd love to see your take on a made for TV movie called "by dawns early light". The movie was so cheap that it comes across as amazing in that classic bad movie style.
It's great how the English and German actors who portray Russians speak with a Russian accent. Yet, Clint Eastwood doesn't even attempt any accent at all, even when he says his Russian lines.
