    I am so happy to have been a kid in the 80’s. So many “cheesy” shows that I love to this day. MacGyver, Quantum Leap, A-Team, Airwolf, Knight Rider, Miami Vice. I could list a bunch more but I still watch these shows and I’m 41 now.

      I totally agree! I just never get tired of it. Since I first watched Airwolf when it was on tv the theme and the rotor and engine sound was imbedded in my mind permanently and would replay perfectly anytime I thought of the show, (and even sometimes when I just saw a helicopter flying in the sky!) I have all the DVDs and always get fired up when the theme starts playing and Airwolf rises up over the hill into view!

    Something nobody seems to mention is how awesome it was that the helicopter would growl at you randomly as if it was a living creature, barely held in control by the pilot.

      @wizcorn9958 Год назад +1

      I mentioned it

    • @vladyvhv9579
      @vladyvhv9579 Год назад +7

      It's something that doesn't really get mentioned by video makers. Commenters in comments sections may bring it up from time to time. Something this episode touched on is that the computer is effectively a learning computer, which was then expanded on by the episode Moffett's Ghost. Also, the pilot episode mentions that the computer basically corrects minor pilot errors, and regulates various functions to streamline the crew's effectiveness. The hydraulics hissing in response to Dom, and in one episode engine flame out when he insulted the copter and restarting when he apologized, further gave subtle hints that the computer did in fact have an AI. As with the occasional growls and snarls. I think that perhaps Moffett's intent with things like the growl/snarl was added phycological warfare aspects. Add the line from this very episode where Winchester recounts Moffett saying "Airwolf is a living thing. More than you'd ever know..." further supports this train of thought.

      I think that was keeping with the theme of the vehicle being a character by itself in the way Nightrider did. That's what I got from watching Airwolf as a kid. It was this unstoppable mechanical air monster.

      Blue Thunder the movie was great. Blue Thunder the TV show was just B-rated fluff.
      Airwolf movie & first season were great, but season 2 started decaying, and season 3 was mostly crap.
      They should re-make the show and update it. Hawke's brother can be MIA in Afghanistan, and replace the older Santini with a female computer nerd.
      Caitlin's character was nice, but only later on after she'd mellowed -- her initial loud southern fried version was crap.
      Nobody's impressed by wireframe computer graphics fx anymore - audiences have moved on. The Knight Rider reboot failed to understand that.
      They should let the helicopter have some kind of AI -- not the talking kind, but more like a predatory animal intelligence.

      Blue Thunder is on Amazon Prime right now. Love the movie even though I'm sure there's all kinds of technical things wrong with it. Having worked F-16s, there's a lot wrong with those scenes, too. But who cares, it's a fun flick in a lot of parts but also pretty sobering.

    The stunt pilots who flew the lady have said that she was more maneuverable and easier to fly overall due to the cosmetic mods added to it. The low ground fly by and the fast up and downs (push-overs) the lady would do weren’t sped up as fast as you’d think they were. The turbo scenes obviously were but the way they made it look realistic at a time when CGI wasn’t available was jaw dropping.

    • @gerv55
      @gerv55 2 года назад +5

      Think it was more down to the whole back end being stripped out of the copter, all the seating in the back etc made it lose a lot of weight and made it more nimble. The cosmetic mods looked the part but i think the weight loss was the main factor that made it handle better.

      I don't know if it was inspired by Airwolf, but when I was a kid in the 80s there was a thing at a JC Penny's or a Foley's or something here in Texas where someone had come up with a wall that had a bunch of blinking lights and switches. So of course you throw a switch and it changes it. Even back then, I always thought that the designer did it as some kind of test, so if you figured it out and got something just right something interesting would happen. In that sense, it's kind of like some of the DEFCON badges of late (pre-pandemic). In fact, with computers being what they are now and such that might be pretty interesting. Blue Thunder (1983) is one of those rare 80s movies that has stood the test of time. The third act where Murphy steals Blue Thunder after Lymangood was killed just smokes, perhaps only bettered by the dressing down that Murphy gets from Capt. Braddock in the first act. And the footage of the police choppers chasing Blue Thunder through the aqueducts, man! That movie is nothing but killer scene after killer scene. The movie loses points for the inane casting of Malcolm McDowell (an upper class Brit as a US Army warrant officer who goes on to become a colonel, really?), but it still has to be one of the most complete aviation films ever.

Naturally they didn't show that each time, but it was nice to know that the Producers were willing to give a nod to the mechanics that kept that helicopter flying. I remember the theme song like the back of my hand. When I was a young’un I remember recalling it as I accelerated my family’s Pontiac Grand Safari with a 455 up the hills of Leechburg, PA. Seriously good times.

    I remember watching the mini movie/ep1 when it came out, i loved it so much and it was so well made for a pilot. They continued to use shots from the pilot right the way through all the series which is pretty funny. Jan Michael Vincent was epic as well, a kind of tortured soul who played a guy with a tortured soul so well.

      Yes! The Airwolf pilot was actually brilliant drama. The version of it that was released to VHS was even better as the TV pilot had been edited for a family audience.

    Thank you so much for covering this!! I, too, was an 80's child and I cut plenty of teeth on the 80's TV shows. Airwolf was one of my faves. So glad that fellow 80's kids still love a show that I hold near a dear. It's sad what happened to Jan... and Earnest was terrific. The whole cast worked well together. It was a show that was epic and could have only been made when it was made. We were all fortunate to be able to enjoy it when we did. Thank you again.

    This show was a staple when I was growing up, to the point I learned what a Bell 222 was before I could ID almost any other aircraft. Downhill from there. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, and you're correct: Airwolf is infallible.
    P.S. Making the Airwolf "screech" while riding our rad BMX bikes was mandatory.

    Something that amuses me is that according to what I read some time ago, the Bell 222b actually flew better with the bodykit, despite the weight

      Bell 222, not b, and yes Aerial Co-Ordinator and chief pilot, J. David Jones got out of it after the test flight and said it was more stable with the body parts than a standard triple deuce.

    The music, the fast flying, and the protagonist having a wild name (stringfellow hawk) which is unique and the 'hawk' thing just fits with a pilot.
    Nice revisit!
    It's like the old A-Team series. Pappard, Mr. T, Dwight, and Starbuck (Dirk). Those guys had to be *the best* SF team because they could throw fragmentation grenades and never hurt anyone (just knock them around) and they could use armour from the inside of an elevator on the *inside* of a panel van but the gunfire never *marred* or *punctured* the van skin. Special Operators indeed!
