I enjoy feeling my bones becoming stronger and more dense while in these poses. I sometimes pause to do more than 1 rep. Your quality explanations remind me where in my body to be strong and where to relax. Each time I listen to your instruction I feel like I go more deeply into the pose and into my muscles and bones. I love this sequence. I used to be a yoga instructor, 30 years ago, and then life too over, and now fast forward to 30 years later, I have osteoporosis and sustained an L1 vertebrae compression fracture in May - I have to be really careful doing these poses so as not to sustain more fractures but these feel good to me.

I have been doing yoga for years but having been diagnosed two years ago with osteoporosis I started doing yoga for osteoporosis (the 12 poses) from various on line instructors. I just found you and I really love the straightforward practice for the right amount of time with very helpful and clear instructions. I did not do it often enough, just two or three times a week and while there was a little improvement in the spine, both hips are worse per my latest Dexa scan. Now I am committed to doing it daily along with daily calcium supplements (Dr's orders). My Doctor told me that although I did not get the results I hoped for, Yoga is probably the thing that has kept me from broken bones. That's a win coming from the doctor. Thank you.

Thankyou so much for this wonderful yoga session. I live in Australia, am 74 and have practised yoga for decades. My yoga teacher retired almost a year ago which is when I discovered this video. Thank you so much for this class! I have probably practiced with you 50 times or more. I only wish that the 30 seconds would begin once we are in the pose. For example, revolved triangle - seems we barely get into the pose and we're coming out of it again. There are so many subtle adjustments made once we are in the poses that are essential to their effectiveness.

I will be working on a video with 60 second holds very soon and I will try to start the 60 second holds once we are in the poses ☺ The study by Dr. Loren Fishman found that benefits to the body are received from holding a yoga pose from 12-72 seconds. I had practiced yoga for three years until an illness interrupted my practice for a year and a half. I am now well enough to begin again. I needed refreshers on the poses.. @@boneslab Although yoga might not boost bone health on its own, it can help increase bone mineral density when you combine it with resistance training. Yoga is a beneficial and safe way to help with osteoporosis and osteopenia and improve bone health. Weight bearing exercise is any movement that requires your muscles to work against gravity. Yoga is an excellent weight bearing exercise as it stimulates bone building for both the upper and lower body while being low-impact. All standing poses will bear weight on the bones in the lower spine, the hips and the legs, encouraging them to strengthen. Bones are living tissue and they respond to mechanical stressors. Weight bearing exercises, including yoga, help tremendously in the remodeling process of our bones. They encourage more bone growth increasing the rate of healthy bone turnover and so are vitally important to practice. Practicing yoga can increase bone density if done consistently and properly. Yoga also improves balance and flexibility, which can prevent falls and therefore prevent fractures. I also noticed that you have a video on your RUclips channel osteoporosis playlist that demonstrates bird dog pose which is a common yoga pose. We reviewed every study related to yoga and bone health, as well as other outcomes, in people with low bone mass (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34914565/). At best, yoga might improve physical functioning in older adults. In fact, there are reports of fractures happening during yoga. There is an ongoing trial looking at whether it can prevent falls. Saying that yoga can improve bone health for people with osteoporosis implies that it can improve bone strength - and there is no good quality study that has shown that. Yoga is fine if people like it, but to say it improves bone mineral density is not based on evidence. I like yoga, don't get me wrong. I am just committed to making sure that we are not misleading people with osteoporosis when it comes to what can improve bone mineral density.

I am 52 and recently dx with osteoporosis in my left hip and osteopenia in my lower back. I've joined a gym and personal trainer helps me concentrate on bone building exercises. I'm wanting to take up yoga to help with flexibility as well...imagine my surprise that my balance is so poor that I have a lot of difficulty doing most of these poses. (Well, not complete surprise as I have a hypermobile left hip and consequently that side is very weak). I do hope that my balance is recoverable.

I very much enjoyed and appreciated your class. I am getting back to a yoga practice. I have osteoporosis, arthritis, SI joint (?) issues and do PT exercise daily, also strength, plus walking time permitting.

Such a puzzlement. Some channels I've explored say they've been told that osteoporosis routines should not include any twists. I'm curious what your understanding is of this aspect. I moved from osteopenia to osteoporosis a couple of years ago and other than walking a few times a week have not been able to feel comfortable with exercise routines...end up feeling out of alignment or with discomfort somewhere...I think I have a hard time positioning my body correctly. I'll be 75 in a couple of months, which is motivating me to find some routine I can stick with and make work for my body so I can feel strong moving forward. I did try your 10 seated strength exercises routine and that felt easy to follow...it doesn't have the advantage of the stretching though. Lots to learn!
Yes, you are at the age where you should be moving, stretching and strengthening your body at least 5 days a week in some way or form. It doesn't have to be an hour of exercise or movement, but daily exercise/movement is essential. Try to walk everyday or at least 5 days out of 7. Regarding your question on twists, you are correct that there is a lot of opinions and misinformation on the subject. Here is my understanding: Slight twists that are part of our natural daily activities are an important movement and we do them normally in our day to day activities. Exercises in which you bend forward at the waist and twist your waist, such as touching your toes or doing sit-ups, can increase your risk of compression fractures in your spine if you have osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines caution against “twisting of the spine to the point of strain” and encourage students with osteoporosis to avoid extreme twists and use gentle rotation. Remember to always check with a physician who specializes in osteoporosis for guidance and listen to your body. I feel there is a lot of misunderstanding about osteoporosis and twists. I think anything that has to do with osteoporosis, whether it is lifting weights, exercise, yoga, stretching, etc., depends on the level and the degree of osteoporosis someone has been diagnosed with along with their fitness level. There is no one size fits all approach. I think twists are generally safe for people with osteoporosis as long as twists are done with the correct alignment and moving with awareness. I would recommend a book called "Yoga for Osteoporosis" by Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall. The book is a great reference and shows several safe variations of yoga twists. Sometimes a diagnosis of osteoporosis can generate a lot of fear which can keep us sedentary and afraid to make any movement which makes us less strong and less healthy. It is always wise to consult a qualified doctor that specializes in osteoporosis and of course listen to your body. I’ve had many comments and questions about doing twists with a diagnosis of osteoporosis so I made a video to help people understand. I enjoy feeling my bones becoming stronger and more dense while in these poses. I sometimes pause to do more than 1 rep. Your quality explanations remind me where in my body to be strong and where to relax. Each time I listen to your instruction I feel like I go more deeply into the pose and into my muscles and bones. I love this sequence. I used to be a yoga instructor, 30 years ago, and then life too over, and now fast forward to 30 years later, I have osteoporosis and sustained an L1 vertebrae compression fracture in May - I have to be really careful doing these poses so as not to sustain more fractures but these feel good to me.

I am osteoporosis and just start doing this 12 poses. I am active and working out but need this for my bone. Thank you for all instructions which is easy to understand. I will do this every day.

I have been practicing yoga for many years but upon being diagnosed with osteoporosis in one hip and my lower spine, I have focused more on the poses which contribute to bone strength. Your explanations about where to focus the breath and balance the body are so important to understanding the benefits of the poses.

I have been doing yoga for years but having been diagnosed two years ago with osteoporosis I started doing yoga for osteoporosis (the 12 poses) from various on line instructors. I just found you and I really love the straightforward practice for the right amount of time with very helpful and clear instructions. I did not do it often enough, just two or three times a week and while there was a little improvement in the spine, both hips are worse per my latest Dexa scan. Now I am committed to doing it daily along with daily calcium supplements (Dr's orders). My Doctor told me that although I did not get the results I hoped for, Yoga is probably the thing that has kept me from broken bones. That's a win coming from the doctor. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this class! I have probably practiced with you 50 times or more. I only wish that the 30 seconds would begin once we are in the pose. For example, revolved triangle - seems we barely get into the pose and we're coming out of it again. There are so many subtle adjustments made once we are in the poses that are essential to their effectiveness.

I will be working on a video with 60 second holds very soon and I will try to start the 60 second holds once we are in the poses ☺ The study by Dr. Loren Fishman found that benefits to the body are received from holding a yoga pose from 12-72 seconds. Thank you for this video. It is so helpful the way you took it slow and purposeful. I appreciate your explanations of how each pose benefits building and strengthening bones. I had practiced yoga for three years until an illness interrupted my practice for a year and a half. I am now well enough to begin again. I needed refreshers on the poses.. Yoga does not increase bone mineral density. The study referenced is of poor quality.

Yoga is a beneficial and safe way to help with osteoporosis and osteopenia and improve bone health. Weight bearing exercise is any movement that requires your muscles to work against gravity. Yoga is an excellent weight bearing exercise as it stimulates bone building for both the upper and lower body while being low-impact. All standing poses will bear weight on the bones in the lower spine, the hips and the legs, encouraging them to strengthen. Bones are living tissue and they respond to mechanical stressors. Weight bearing exercises, including yoga, help tremendously in the remodeling process of our bones. They encourage more bone growth increasing the rate of healthy bone turnover and so are vitally important to practice. Practicing yoga can increase bone density if done consistently and properly. Yoga also improves balance and flexibility, which can prevent falls and therefore prevent fractures. I also noticed that you have a video on your RUclips channel osteoporosis playlist that demonstrates bird dog pose which is a common yoga pose.

We reviewed every study related to yoga and bone health, as well as other outcomes, in people with low bone mass (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34914565/). At best, yoga might improve physical functioning in older adults. In fact, there are reports of fractures happening during yoga. There is an ongoing trial looking at whether it can prevent falls. Saying that yoga can improve bone health for people with osteoporosis implies that it can improve bone strength - and there is no good quality study that has shown that. Yoga is fine if people like it, but to say it improves bone mineral density is not based on evidence. I like yoga, don't get me wrong. I am just committed to making sure that we are not misleading people with osteoporosis when it comes to what can improve bone mineral density.

I am 52 and recently dx with osteoporosis in my left hip and osteopenia in my lower back. I've joined a gym and personal trainer helps me concentrate on bone building exercises. I'm wanting to take up yoga to help with flexibility as well...imagine my surprise that my balance is so poor that I have a lot of difficulty doing most of these poses. (Well, not complete surprise as I have a hypermobile left hip and consequently that side is very weak). I do hope that my balance is recoverable.

I very much enjoyed and appreciated your class. I am getting back to a yoga practice. I have osteoporosis, arthritis, SI joint (?) issues and do PT exercise daily, also strength, plus walking time permitting.

Such a puzzlement. Some channels I've explored say they've been told that osteoporosis routines should not include any twists. I'm curious what your understanding is of this aspect. I moved from osteopenia to osteoporosis a couple of years ago and other than walking a few times a week have not been able to feel comfortable with exercise routines...end up feeling out of alignment or with discomfort somewhere...I think I have a hard time positioning my body correctly. I'll be 75 in a couple of months, which is motivating me to find some routine I can stick with and make work for my body so I can feel strong moving forward. I did try your 10 seated strength exercises routine and that felt easy to follow...it doesn't have the advantage of the stretching though. Lots to learn!
Yes, you are at the age where you should be moving, stretching and strengthening your body at least 5 days a week in some way or form. It doesn't have to be an hour of exercise or movement, but daily exercise/movement is essential. Try to walk everyday or at least 5 days out of 7. Regarding your question on twists, you are correct that there is a lot of opinions and misinformation on the subject. Here is my understanding:
Slight twists that are part of our natural daily activities are an important movement and we do them normally in our day to day activities. Exercises in which you bend forward at the waist and twist your waist, such as touching your toes or doing sit-ups, can increase your risk of compression fractures in your spine if you have osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines caution against “twisting of the spine to the point of strain” and encourage students with osteoporosis to avoid extreme twists and use gentle rotation. Remember to always check with a physician who specializes in osteoporosis for guidance and listen to your body.
I feel there is a lot of misunderstanding about osteoporosis and twists. I think anything that has to do with osteoporosis, whether it is lifting weights, exercise, yoga, stretching, etc., depends on the level and the degree of osteoporosis someone has been diagnosed with along with their fitness level. There is no one size fits all approach. I think twists are generally safe for people with osteoporosis as long as twists are done with the correct alignment and moving with awareness. I would recommend a book called "Yoga for Osteoporosis" by Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall. The book is a great reference and shows several safe variations of yoga twists. Sometimes a diagnosis of osteoporosis can generate a lot of fear which can keep us sedentary and afraid to make any movement which makes us less strong and less healthy. It is always wise to consult a qualified doctor that specializes in osteoporosis and of course listen to your body.
