    Here's one for you--I was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism 11 years ago, and the endocrinologist told me that while surgery to remove the adenoma was the only cure, I only had osteopenia, not osteoporosis, so they would not refer me for surgery. Instead, they would wait and watch until I got "bad enough" for surgery. Two other endocrinologists told me the same thing, and since my insurance required a referral, either I waited or I forked over the cost myself, which I couldn't afford. When I retired, I discovered that Medicare would cover the surgery, and I could self refer. I had my surgery a year ago. Had I had the surgery when I was first diagnosed, I wouldn't have had the bone loss I incurred over the subsequent 10 years of "wait and watch." Unfortunately, this seems to be what many, if not most, endocrinologists are taught in medical school. It's ludicrous.

    • @MorganMcCartor
      @MorganMcCartor 4 месяца назад +11

      My endocrinologist said that I was "literally peeing my bones away" because of a parathyroid tumor. Then he said that I could wait for surgery until the symptoms of the tumor got worse. I looked at him agog and said, "But I'm a small, dark-haired woman," which I believed put me a greater risk of osteoporosis. He looked kinda startled, then said that he would arrange for the surgery. I was 44. It's like osteoporosis didn't register for him until I made the connection.

      @@MargaretUIUC Because I had High D3 levels my doctor said I probably had hyperparathyroidism. I didn’t “bite” or panic as at over 70 I understand the immune benefits of D3 (with K2Mk7). Next time I had a test it said I didn’t so glad I never worried. Anyway I was told by him that 125 nmol/L was too high (mine was 124) but another pathology my brother went to classifies the “healthy range as 75 to 250 nmol/L. So many now have different ideas on these that no wonder we get confused. The UK are apparently the lowest recommended levels and they don’t get much Sun I heard to generate their own D3.

      I spent almost 10 years fighting with docs to get hrt from the minute I hit peri menopause. All I got was a ton of fear mongering. "Oh it'll cause cancer/blood clots/heart attacks/stroke" or "I'm not even discussing it with you." So I got fed up of the lot of them and got my own hrt without them. I do at home blood tests every 3 months. Due another test in 2 weeks. My first test showed my estradiol was almost non-existent. I'm only on hrt a few months so still early days but the difference it made to me was evident within days of starting.

    I only found your channel a few days ago and have already learned so much. I've signed up for the course and looking forward to it. This video hit the nail on the head. It makes me laugh when ob/gyn tell people to stay in their own lane regarding hrt. They receive only a few hours of training in relation to menopause. That 3/4 hours doesn't make them experts. I probably know more about hrt at this stage than a lot of ob/gyns. I've been convinced for ages that docs are only interested in keeping you sick. I'm 54 and remember a time when you went to a doctor and they did all kinds of tests to get to the bottom of what was ailing you. Now, docs treat symptom after symptom after symptom without even trying to get to the root cause. It's so frustrating. Most gps are drug pushers with a licence. Thank you Dr. Doug for this video. We do all need to be responsible for our own health and try to stay out of doctors surgeries as much as possible.

    This really resonates with me. At 50 I asked for a baseline dexa. The gyno said I didn’t need it since I hadn’t shrunk 😳 So like an idiot I didn’t insist. At 56, after my daughter pointed out I was getting shorter I asked my primary care for a referral. Full blown osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hip. -3.2 spine, -2.2 femoral neck, and -1.4 total hip. Of course fosamax was pushed by PC and gyno. Started lifting weights, changed my diet and began following amazing doctors like Dr. Doug. Switched to new PC who said I missed my “window” for taking HRT because menopause was 7 yrs ago. Switched to new gyno that put me on HRT 18 months following my diagnosis. The “window” is actually 5-10 yrs post menopause. 6 months after taking HRT I was due for my two year dexa. I couldn’t believe it, but spine now -2.1 vs -3.2. Hip and femur the same T score but both increased density based on the (g/cm). Adding K2 to my D3 was another big change as well. Thank you so much Dr. Doug for personally helping me to know how to ask the right questions and to take responsibility for my own health care. An awakening is definitely happening about the medical complex as a whole.

    Only a year ago I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Up into this point my Dexa Scan diagnosis was osteopenia but with the osteopenia I broke my back,my ankle and my Forearm. My gastric sleeve surgeon told me that my osteopenia was basically the same thing as osteoporosis in effect. He told me with the osteopenia I was highly susceptible to soft bones and easily fractured bones.
    With my broken arm I had to have two surgeries to repair my arm. The orthopedic surgeon told o have soft bones.
    I am terrified of a fractured hip. Especially since I have a pacemaker.

    I had DEXAs fairly early in my 50s. Not sure why other than my doc wanted to write prescriptions for Boniva (before we learned the most serious side effects). I was osteopenic & unfortunately I had no other information at the time - even “learned” this was natural with age. Pretty much ignored things til it became more serious. Wish My original doc had been more educated on the effects of weight and impact training. Also HRT wasn’t suggested because this was the heyday of the breast cancer scare.

      @@pamelag.00 yes I remember breast cancer supposed to be associated with HRT that was why I never wanted them. I remember thinking our female body is a miracle and might in fact produce just enough in our now limited demands. It was mainly only MEN doctors back then. Going off Prolia since I found how dangerous they are, I have a rebounder and do bone health sessions without and with hand weights. Following several and the REAL AUSTRALIAN naturopath (many use her videos without permission and are fake) who recommended the Rebounder. Watching what our bones are in fact made from and what is needed in that regard as well. IMO, we still always need to watch our step, especially turning and not do things that might be too dangerous even if we feel adventurous but not wrap ourselves in cotton wool. At nearly 77, I love getting out in my garden too but no longer will climb ladders 😁 Best of wishes for you.

    Question, why if fosamax is supposed to help build bone that some people can fracture their femurs if they take too long?

    • @darlenesmith8892
      @darlenesmith8892 4 месяца назад +2

      It’s my understanding that Fosamax will build bone for a period of time, but with long term use, can cause bones to become brittle. I believe the recommended usage time is up to five years, and then have a break or drug holiday from use. Your doctor can advise regarding length of time, as what is recommended for one may be different for another. I just know my sister was on Fosamax for ten years with no suggested drug holiday. Both femurs fractured a couple of years apart, one from a standing position, the other while walking through the house.

    I am a 67 year old man with prostate cancer. I am taking ADT drugs one of which is prednisone which my understanding may lead to osteoperosis. I had a dexa scan and they found that I have osteopena. There was no baseline dexa scan done prior to starting prednisone so I do not know if the osteopena proceeded the start of prednisone. The scan happened 5 months after starting the prednisone. My doctor is prescribing prolia for me. Based on what I have seen I would like to consider diet, weight training and monitoring by dexa or other scans that are more thorough. I don't want to jeopardize my overall health however. I’m just wondering what is going to happen to women. He passed from CLL and they couldn’t give him anymore platelets.. or blood.. so he died.. no pain at all. She is in pain constantly.. she has a fractured elbow from a fall last week. She’s now bedridden.. And her insurance only pays so much. I am not sure but you may benefit from testosterone since it declines with age. It also helps to keep bones and muscles strong. Just don’t overdo it and look for a wellness clinic that specializes in hormone replacement. They will check your levels through bloodwork to see where your levels are at. It is worth checking your hormone levels.

    With scoliosis, and instability, hormones causing side affects ten years ago but ob/gyn gave no instructions on when/how to take them, My gp said don’t take both hormones, only progesterone and later had the nurse call and say I didn’t need it so discontinue. How do I safely build bone?

    Hi - I have a t-score of -1 in my left femoral neck, showing osteopenia. The rest of my bones and BMD are normal. Is this something I can turn around? I eat eggs and fish but not a lot and haven’t eaten other meats since my early twenties. I plan to eat more fish and eggs and do weights. Is there anything else I can do? I’ve been on HRT for 3 years now; the scan was done 6 months ago. Thank you.

    Well, I have it all, inflammation all over my body, which is why I can’t exercise “hard.” Arthritis all over ( hips, sacrum, IT Band syndrome, osteoarthritis of both knees, two compression fractures of the thoracic vertebrae, chronic gastritis, glute tears…etc) my dexa scan is -4.1 of the spine, so, because of pain and a sedentary lifestyle, and the dexa numbers at the age of 59, I’m probably going to have to go onto bone medication 😢
