For me, that’s why running/endurance sports are so awesome- if you want to perform at your best, you have to do all things well, sleep, eating, stress management, etc. It’s NEVER easy, even for those who are at an elite level, but it’s something we can all work on and learn from each other!

100% There are studies that show a drop in both cortisol and testosterone for a good number of months after your child is born. I experienced this myself and combined with lack of sleep I dug myself into a pretty deep hole. And with all that said I know you’ll find your balance again. Lastly, what you eat is definitely a huge part of it but only after understanding how your body’s responding to life stressors.

It’s great to hear you’re going to fuel and rest well moving forward. I must admit I saw your start to the season slightly differently. You performed really well at the Arena Games. In Miami, I had you coming off the bike in second with Sam the rate you were going through the field and my prediction was that you’d be a close third on the day. But you crashed and were really sick for a while so in my mind St George was a reflection of the consequences of not having a continuous run of form from Miami onwards and Florida was an indication that you’re getting back to where you were say in the lead up to Miami. Yes, absolutely, eat better and sleep well. But I think your training at the start of the year was on track, so please don’t do anything stupid to impact consistency of training for the rest of the season. It would be brilliant to say “hi” in Lahti and I’m planning to return to Tucson to prepare for my first time at Indian Wells early December so possibly see you then. Cheers and very best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Nutrition definitely plays a huge role in recovery, and not just calories and macros. It's also quality of foods and how processed they are. Certain foods, especially highly processed ones can cause inflammation which could be affecting your recovery. Endurance ahtletes need to eat a lot to sustain the demands of training, but many also go for donuts, gels etc that may "fuel" them but might not help them long term (myself included but I'm working on it). Just my two cents, but I hope you can get your nutrition on track not only for your performance but also longevity. Keep at it man 👍

Some one I work with says he spends a lot of time pushing back on the next snake oil indicators. All industry’s promote such rabbit holes, but most never come to such fruition. I know you don’t read comments but if you happened to read, I think your right there’s a lot of bs, and I would highly encourage you to say no to such snake oil indicators. Anything too shiny like -- science way of training aka iden, lactate monitors, using whoop, etc. Do what you know works and become a Jedi of it. One of my favorite quotes that put jack of all trades to shame is this:
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
    Bruce Lee”

With lionel stating yet again (nearly identically) how he's not going to retire, yet be a coach. It kind of seems like a rehearsed answer, by which he really is thinking of retiring very soon and beginning the ease into a transition.

Having have done bodybuilding competitions, food choice and macros are everything! You should look into bodybuilding nutrition!!! I learned so much about clean eating and protein requirements!

Sorry, I've reached my threshold with Lionel. This video is just full of contradictions. Its very entertaining but i feel like I'm just getting sucked into his triathlon motivation crap. This whole theme of nutrition, c'mon like you don't know this yet? He is frigg'in tired and burned up. Coaching? I can't think of anyone less suitable. He hasn't figured things out for himself and now he's considering coaching? Its a shame because what he seems to enjoy is just simple exercise. Thats the bottom line for many of us. How to enjoy an active lifestyle and not get sucked into this race to be a cool stud triathlete.

As someone who attempted to be vegan for 5 years, not taking in meat and dairy products was SIGNIFICANTLY detrimental to my health and especially my athletic performance. I wish veganism worked it just doesnt for some people. I was depressed, unable to think clearly, hurt all the time, couldn't perform athletically, and was sick more often. When I switched back to eating meat and dairy, ALL those symptoms went away. I read Rick Roll's book and I saw from his example how much being vegan helped him. I tried so many different approaches to make my veganism work but it just didn't. I can't believe Lionel Sanders had been training and racing this hard without a proper diet!

    Lionel,
Eating clean is what you do for long term sustainabilty of health....even if you are not an athlete.
Want to keep up to your child on a run in 15yrs?.....it is time to take care or yourself and therefore your quality of life.
    I am now 64.yrs old...formerly obese & addict..in my 20's.....dropped 120lbs & got sober by 30yrs old.........by 40yrs old was a personal trainer, runner, group fitness instructor.
I am now more fit, pleased with myself and life than ever.
    This may validate my comments.

Cheers from Brazil Lionel !! Every body is different no doubt about it, some of us works better on vegan diet, others on protein… for an instance, i’ve been on a gluten free diet (forced, my wife just discovered celiac disease) and is kinda working for me also.
As for you, you Gotta work with the right professionals to take the best results, I would say. Since you have this opportunity (great, to say the least!) to choose from the best of the world and I think that everyone would love to work with you, since you’re one of the best voices of this wonderful sport, take the chance and do it 💪💪
And if you ever wonder if you would be welcomed well here at Brazil, just be sure!! We would love to see you flying through florianopolis! Cheers and hope that you win lots of races! You deserve the best🎉🎉🎉

I'm no pro by any means but as an older athlete (62) I definitely need to focus more on nutrition and recupe to perform and feel my best. According to Peter Attia (check him out) he proposes that to grow or maintain muscle and strength if training hard requires approximately 2 to 3 grams of good protein per kilogram of body weight. Hence possibly supplementing your diet with good protein will help. As well, Peter A, suggests animal protein is vastly superior to veggie protein. Hope to see you back on the podium Lionel. You're still one of my favorite Triathletes. Best of luck.

First of all just to be clear I like you and you’re a source of true inspiration for me! But it is heartbreaking to see you not reach all your potential and change strategies all the time!! The wearables that you use in training like HR OR Lactate are just tools that work to give you directions and made you do better questions about everything around your training recovery (nutrition inclusive!) but you must understand how they relate together!! I think that was Olaf who that said once they're just snapshots of what's going on inside your body if you don't understand from the point of view of biology and physiology you should find someone that understands!! Kylian Jornet is performing at the top level and I think he's older than you Jan the same! You are what you eat definitely please don't say that eating shit makes you have more power because that is not true!! Be consistent with your nutrition the body doesn't work like a switch on/off button if you have proper nutrition for 6 days you'll be flying and recovering better that is not like that you should be consistent like you are in your training pushing always to red is not right way of doing it! You should stop and think and most of all find someone that helps you and that you trust in the process!! If you keep like this you eventually will give up because is not this way that the results will change!! You're keeping doing the same errors over and over again! That is nonsense!! Love you very much and hope you find a better way to finish in the place that you should be (1st)
