Bought mine in 1987 for $8,050 brand new, and kept it for 15 years. I couldn’t kill this wonderful little guy even though I tried really hard. Even rolled it onto its side during a power slide in a parking lot. Three guys walked over and we pushed it back into its wheels. A convertible truck that gets 30 miles to the gallon; how do you beat that! Definitely my favorite vehicle that I ever owned.

I had a 1990 Samurai brand new and that thing got me through all seasons. My dad put wider tires on it and bought a custom removable hardtop for it. The best first vehicle ever! Nothing bad to say about it. That thing gets the job done. I had to rescue neighbors from being stuck in a snowstorm. I miss that little thing. My daughter wishes she could have rode in it. I kept it until 2003. Sold it to a guy who collected them. 😍

I'm 36, and over the course of my life I've heard jeep guys talk trash about the samurai, but it has definitely been getting quieter- by now most guys have seen a sammie go places their rig won't and have realized that despite the size, it is all business.

I bought one of these new in 1988 when they started saying they were unsafe and the dealer had a big discount on them. It was a love it and hate it car. It was super fun in winter even with the stock tires it went anywhere I pointed it. Good in town commuter, winter driver, off road, and fun convertible, but horrible on the interstate in 80 mph traffic. Used for what it was designed for it was fine, as long as you have another car for weekend road trips on the interstate.

When I was at a low financial time, I bought a small Suzuki hatchback (named a Holden) that had been around the clock at least once, but ran OK. It had the same 1,300cc engine as Nathan's SUV. It was really a lot of fun to drive, the gearshift was slick, and it was great to be mobile in something so cheap ($NZ700). I even managed to get a speeding ticket with it, but the female cop was gorgeous so it was hard to stay mad. When I traded it in, I made the huge mistake of changing the oil. The thick black gunk in the engine had kept it going. When I changed to 15-30 weight (as recommended by the dim girl at Supercheap Auto) The motor started visibly smoking. It failed to get a Warrant of Fitness, and my trade in was reduced from $750 to $250. I nearly made a profit. Apparently the advice for elderly engines is to use 40W oil to keep the smoke where it belongs.

My grandfather bought one in the 1986 hardtop, and We still have it. We repaired the engine 5 years ago, it has ported head (.40 are the degrees of the cut for the head). has bigger pistons (from suzuki forza or swift gen 2) for high compression. It has a custom manifold with 2 inch pipe to the back. Now it has around 100hp. It has a 2-inch lift kit with 8-inch wheels and Cooper tires for mud (30/9.5/R15). My father used it every day for 27 years to go to work. and still used daily for everything, work, hang out, to go hunting and some mudding grocery store jajaja

I had one of these 20 years ago in Alaska. It was bone stock except for studded snow tires and could go where none of my friends could go with their "real" off-road rigs.
The first time I left them was on a big snowy hill that we couldn't walk up. I got to the top, moved out of the way and waited, and waited, and waited... then got out and went to look. They weren't coming... stuck at the bottom. LOL So I snaked my way back down and around to where they were and said, "Come on, It's easy. You just do it like this, " and went back up. LOL

I brought a Samurai new in 1987 for 7995.00. No power anything, it didn't even come with a radio. It was slow and horrible on the highway, but unstoppable off-road. Even in the stock configuration, I could get through stuff bigger trucks couldn't. It never failed and would start even when temps were well below zero. These videos make me miss it, but the north-east winters slowly ate up the little Samurai's body. R.I.P.

Great times in that rig.

I had no lift on my Samari and had 235/75r15 Wrangler MTR's and all I had to do was remove the front bumper (amazing how light and useless it was) and replaced the bumper bar with a flat piece of wood that I painted black. No rubbing at all. That thing went through some serious stuff. It is a great water car, I could go in water that was 3 feet with no problem at all.

NATHAN, kicking ass and taking Samurai names, the JX410 always kicked ass and still make most modern equivalents look silly. I live in central Canada and our dealership use to sell these new back in 1987 before the cars were brought to Canada and all the different models sold themselves. They were and still are reliable durable easy to service and always started in the coldest weather and had awesome heat in them like the Volvos we sold. I f Roman decides to sell it ,let me know and I'll buy it from you guys. I know the best Suzuki mechanics in my city.

I got a 87 for free, just had to get out of an older couples side yard where it sat for about 6 year. Towed it out to the steet put a battery in it a few gallons of gas with sea foam and hit it with some starting fluid and she fired up. We aired up the tires and drove it about five miles home.
We had to flush the radiator all the oils and put on new brake, hoses and belts and I drove it for about three years. It got a shackle lift and 235x75x15 AT tires and took it all over hell and back. It finally ended up a hunting rig in South Texas and is still in use today. They are great little 4x4s and am on the look out for another one.

My 1988 Dodge Raider (Mistubishi Montero) was nearly as small and light. I embarrassed several of my friends who had big 4WD trucks about 20 years ago. They would suggest we take the Raider on some of our crazier hunting trips here in New Mexico after they had seen it in action. The Samurai is basically less of the same. And that's a good thing. When I was a teenager, my hunting vehicle was a surplus 1942 Willys Jeep. I miss the Jeep AND that old Raider.

I told you so! The Suzuki Samurai is possibly the most underrated off-road vehicle ever. Even with completely inappropriate tires, mixed bad road surface, the little Samurai easily scrambled up that challenging mountain. Imagine what it could do with proper off-road tires? OK so putting a set of new tires might double the purchase cost of the Samurai, but it would be worth it. Maybe TreadWright makes a recycled off-road tire with aggressive thread in that tiny size.

I had an 87 Samurai, I did the Spring-over-axle as well as a shackle lift and fit 32's under with very minimal rubbing - only at full lock. I then re-geared the transfer case and had no problem with fairly extreme rocks and river beds. The gears also made it very drive-able on the highway even with the much larger tires.

Great little video, I love my Zuk. If you do a spring over swap, be sure to get a proper kit and do it right. You'll have to sort the shock mounts, ubolt mount plates, axle perches, steering pitman arm, extended brake lines, diff/driveline angle adjustment and likely a spacer or two. Check out sites like Low Range Offroad and Zuks Offroad to see what the various lift kits involve.
There are also YJ jeep leaf spring swaps you can do which give better flex and ride quality due to their longer length, a few other kits like Old Man Emu 1.5" etc...
Cheapest option? Slap a 1" body lift under it, put some knobby 30" tires on and just drive it! Add a $150 lunchbox locker in the back axle if you're feeling adventurous. They're a blast in any form.
    Merry Christmas!

Sure the 95 HP wasn't going to win any races, but with a 5 speed manual, it wasn't too bad. The manual locking hubs were a bit of a pain, but I never got stuck in snow. Driving in high crosswinds was scary as hell and going up steep hills...not recommended...lol.

Hey not too correct you or anything but we had a Suzuki Jeep back in the middle 70's in Florida, it had no designation other than Suzuki Jeep, was mustard yellow and came with Military tread tires. We got it because of the 70's gas shortage and kept it until the early 80's. The Jeep was two seat, cargo area in the back, only a steel bar to swing up and lock in place instead of a actual door, with canvas top and canvas door's. Buying Engine Air Filters was the biggest headache because they had to be ordered from Japan. The Jeep was the very best off road vehicle I've ever experienced. Thanks for doing this review.

What?! None of you guys have a cat? But, I guess I can forgive you guys, because it was a fun video to watch. Many moons ago at the other side of this planet I drove a 780 kg (1700 pounds) Renault 5 in snow and ice up a hill, where real offroad SUVs were stuck and I learned first hand, the best vehicle on snow and ice is the lightest one. The exact point that you mentioned at the end.

Laugh the whole duration. Thank you Nathan for a perfect christmas gift for us hardcore Zook fans... Btw, It's giving me nightmares not being able to own the new jimny. That thing is absolutely smashing. The new article on Top Gear has so much goods to say about it when compared to the new G Wagen. Oh! And it can do 176 km/hr meaning 108 m/hr. Oh Suzuki please do something.

Great video, and I had no doubt that Nathan would get that Samurai up that hill, it was a good run.
But the only reason why that 'worked' was because of the head band, you know that, don't you? LOL.

I think there's a happy-medium on weight. While snow-wheeling above Central City, my friend ran his TJ off the trail into the snow. Pulling him out, forward, meant doing all that off-camber on this trail. When I pulled him, with no lockers, running Phantom all terrains, starting off in 4-hi and 2nd gear (typical street start), ...all I saw where his Jeep's headlights burred in snow for 20 feet then popping out onto the trail. There was no effort, no sliding, and Roy called this stock farm truck a, "beast."
With me inside, the truck weighed in at nearly 5,000lbs. From my experience, this is a sweet-spot. That old truck has been through many 7/10 Colorado trails and countless snow-wheeling trips without a single issue. Had it been any lighter, Roy's jeep would have remained off the trail for a few more days.

For a long time was in two minds about buying a brand new Samurai (they were being sold in India uptill 1st March 2019 under the label of Gypsy). Thanks to this video, ordered one in December and took delivery of my brand new 2019 MPFI Gypsy which produces 80 BHP and 108 nm of Torque. With slight rigs in the suspensions, a rear locker and all terrain tyres (very cheap mods), it does wonders (actually performs much better in competition spec tracks than the toyotas and isuzus being sold in India, which are ofcourse triple the price of a Gypsy.).
    Cheers.

Great little trucks. Loads of them used to come along when we were off roading in our Landy’s back in the UK and they are excellent off road.
Somebody once told me you should never switch your axles and springs like you suggest in the video though. It puts incredible torque stress on the U bolts amongst other issues.
