You're very blessed to still have your mom at 65, I'm 49, and my mom passed away last December, and I miss Har so much , she was my best friend. Thank you for your videos and content.
You know you are the correct demographic for this channel if you have a framed Olin Mills portrait in the back of your closet. LOL. I wish I could be ruthless and get rid of mine as I have smaller versions that have also been scanned.
Loving the verbalization of your thought process with each object. Probably why we defer the decision making of what to do with our "stuff"! SOME of us still do cassettes. My 1997 Dodge Dakota has a cassette player. And I still have cassette tapes that WORK!
I just had a garage sale and people bought ALL my cassettes there were over 100 of them It was amazing the conversations that were being had over the bands and styles of music I had. I have to say I was very surprised because I honestly didn't think I would even sell 1 but yeah people loved them : )
This was a very good video. We can all see that what we store is often deferred decisions. Plus, the older we all get, the more difficult it is to go through things and move them down stairs, etc. I'm really happy you are helping her.
It’s amazing what can be hiding away in places we don’t frequent. I have a large walk in closet in my husband’s office. It’s a Mr Magoo closet. I have no idea what is in the far back reaches of this magical closet where things go to die. I’m motivated to get started on clearing it out. Thanks!
I wish I could declutter as ruthlessly as you. I have aspirations of being a minimalist but I can’t seem to let go. Have already let go of sooooo much over the last 5 years but still feel overwhelmed with what’s left.
I've been at this for a while too. Just keep at it. As time goes by you will peel back another layer. We have collected so much stuff from parents who have passed away. It has been overwhelming for some time. Sentimental things, things that they loved, but I don't. Over time I have been able to star paring down. I realized a few years ago that I was confusing keeping all of their things with my respect and love for them. Getting rid of some of their stuff did not mean I was throwing them away. It sounds kind of silly, but after that, I was able to start letting go. My advice is too keep moving forward but take the time you need to process your decisions. Sometimes it takes me quite a while between realizing that I might be able to part with something and finally getting it out of the house. That's still a win. Right now I have an old jacket hanging up where I can see it. I know it is going to go in the trash, but I am a day or so away from doing it. Keep up the good work.
I have a smaller version of the mirrored dresser tray that was my grandmother’s. I keep it on my dresser now with a few bottles of perfume, and other vanity dresser items that were my mother’s, grandmothers’, or great great aunt’s that will always remind me of them and the good ol’ days.
Someone mentioned taking the pictures out of the frames and storing them. Something I did is scan what I could and take good digital photos of others and then I have copies of them. It also makes it easy to share with other family members. I didn't want to take up space storing framed photos that were no longer on the wall. This also is nice in the case of some type of disaster, floods, fire or weather events. A digital copy assures that photo is not lost. It may be hard to toss the photos after creating a digital copy so maybe put them aside for a little bit until you are assured that your digital copies are good. I'm sure you know that you should have multiple back-ups of digital photos.
Hey Tim, you are so brave to open bags and zippered containers on camera! 😄. Love your follow through, otherwise it's a big scrambled mess in the floor - outside of the closet. I usually take all of the pics out of the outdated frames and hand the pics off to someone else. Getting dust on the beautiful comforters! Love the emoji face when you said, "I'm 65!" 😳
This was really helpful. Great job! You motivated me to clean out an area of my laundry room, that had the same things in it, like wrapping paper, boxes, Christmas decor and pictures. Thank you.
I SO want to do this with my Mom but she isn't ready yet for the two big closets. We have tackled a few spots in the house, and she loves the area once we are done with it. She says she likes that I don't do anything with the stuff without her permission...I know that is important step when decluttering her home. Good video, you got a lot done!
What I love about decluttering is that you can sell some of the stuff and put the money towards a holiday or to give it to charity and feel good about it knowing that it Will help someone so either way selling or giving you will feel good ✌️👍
I think most people our age & our parents age keep things 'in case we need them' mentality. I've thrown away more empty bags & boxes when I went through my spare bedroom closet too.
Love your videos. I am now getting around to decluttering our house. It is slow process as I am limited to what I can do but it will get done sometime. Thanks for sharing! Have a great week! 🙂😘❤
Hi, Tim! Decluttering videos are just so satisfying to watch. My next decluttering task is my bedroom dresser drawers. All I store there are folded clothes. I'm not a person who finds it hard to declutter clothes, so it will be a quick event. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a wonderful day, Tim!
My declutter journey has stalled, as it is travel and camping season... But! I try to fill my garbage can weekly, or take a monthly trip to the thrift store. My girlfriend is in the process of clearing her home to sell, to move in with her mother as well. I'm inspired by her ability to do away with "stuff". And many of your videos.
Wow! An empty closet! Great job! I will never have that, our old farm house has only one closet in one of the bedrooms. Our decluttering adventure continues, we've gotten rid of 7 or 8 boxes of books, Probably more than that of household and knickknacks to the thrift store, and other junk to the dump. I still have 4 boxes of books and my husband has at least that, some of them he still has to go through. I will probably get rid of more, but one layer at a time. And we still have too much! I love seeing how neat and uncluttered your place and your mom's is. Some day mine will be too. Thank you for the videos.
Speaking of "long forgotten closets", I knew I had a relatively small box of art supplies, but I hadn't gone through them in a long time. Well, I had a mad impulse to start doing sketching/journaling. I thought I'd gotten rid of all my small watercolor brushes, so I ordered some new ones on Amz. Then today I opened the art box, and low and behold, I already have a good sized set of small brushes lol. So the moral of the story is to look in those long forgotten drawers, boxes and closets before buying new. Fortunately the brushes are the inexpensive synthetic kind, so no big loss.
Thank you for another informative video. It is so nice to be able to vacuum the floor and dust everything that was left in the closet. I need to do this in a couple of spare rooms... Thank you for taking us along on your journey.
It’s a lovely chair. Caning is hard too do, a couple of years ago I priced a chair to be mended, it was a £1 a hole then. It is a specialist job for sure.
You inspired me to go through stuff that was literally stuffed into nooks and cranies in my tiny home when I moved in...i now have an inventory of every bin and its contents...i had stocked a lot of supplies during covid and should never have to vidit a drug store again!! THANK YOU!!!
Great reminder to get into forgotten spaces to declutter and clean! That small iron is exactly like one my mom had and used for travel. Back in the day many hotels and motels didn't provide irons and that one was perfect for travel since it was small. Thank you.
Good job, I just went through getting rid of my old papers ( military and taxes, etc.) , took me forever since I had to shread them. Also since they old much dust was created! Yuck!
