  • Embark on a grand adventure through picturesque Scotland with this 1940s amateur travelogue, captured on vibrant Kodachrome film. Four brave and tidy youths traverse their way around youth hostels, singing and cycling through locations such as Ben Nevis, Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Glasgow, Edinburgh Zoo, Queensferry, Dundee, Auchmithie and Alford. The film captures wholesome enjoyment amidst plenty of fresh air, corduroy shorts, and delicious ginger beer.
    Little is known about the individuals featured in the footage. The only information available is the credit "E.J.G.S. Film Productions" at the beginning of the film, which could potentially refer to the group of friends depicted. The word "colour" in the titles is spelled the American way "color" maybe that's a clue as to the origins of the group in the film. Perhaps the film was originally only intended for viewing by close friends and family, or maybe the filmmakers belonged to a cine club that regularly screened their work. Though the identities of the individuals portrayed may be unknown, their stories provide touching and alluring insights into the lives of those who created the films.
    Upscaled to 1080 HD, stabilised, fps increased from 18 - 30. Noise reduced, tone balanced to reduce contrast and bring out the details in the darker areas. Sharpened and details recovered. The film has also been stabilised, a hand held camera can produce a very jittery image, this has been corrected to provide a smooth image.
    ✔ Tone balanced.
    ✔ AI settings testing, optimised for the best upscale.
    ✔ Original film dissected for multi part AI processing.
    ✔ Stabilised.
    ✔ Scratches, blemishes and other damage removed.
    ✔ Image noise removed.
    ✔ Image details recovered.
    ✔ Film sharpened.
    ✔ Upscaled to HD.

    Fantastic piece of film ! My Dad and his friend cycled all the way from Aberfeldy right up the west coast to Thurso , and all the way back down the East coast during their summer holidays . This would have been the same time , as he was 16 then .
    We always spent our summer holidays in Aultbea, with Dad pointing out all the hostels they stopped at !
    Great days , sadly never to be seen again 😪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

      My Dad also went cycling and Youth hosteling but he would have been 26 in 1949. He later took us on holidays in the car to revisit many of the places he came to love. He gave me a love and appreciation of our natural environment, culture and heritage which I still enjoy to this day and now share with my own son.

    A terrific film. Very upsetting to see the polar bear in its cramped enclosure exhibiting stressed behaviour though.

    An excellent and helpful introduction. I noticed the spelling of "color" and wondered about it. There is a simplicity about the film that does suggest that perhaps it was intended for a small viewership. There is also a sense of the times, now long gone, but it was the Scotland I grew up in. Thank you for the effort you put into making this delightful little film available to us.

    Lovely bit of film. My late Dad was a keen cyclist and went Youth Hosteling in the 1940s.
    I think I know where every frame of this was taken. In some places, the only difference between then and now is the sheer amount of traffic on the roads.

    Fascinating film, and beautifully restored. 25 minutes of Kodachrome would have cost an absolute fortune in 1949!

    Great film - wonderfully restored!
    I sometimes think it's very depressing to reflect on how much of this kind of historical record is mouldering away in people's attics, or has been thrown out because nobody had any interest in saving it onto newer formats.
    I recently digitised some old 2 inch(?) BW negatives found in my late mother-in-law's possessions - photos taken in the late 1950s - and the amount of detail in those - only taken with a very simple cheap camera I am told - is astonishing - ever so much better than pictures taken in the 1970s which we also found. It's such a shame that in so many families these things are tossed out.
    Of course, one does have to be realistic and say that, if everyone saved everything properly, then as generations move on we'd all be utterly swamped by accumulations of saved past media and have to spend enormous amounts of time curating it, since saved media without proper descriptive metadata is of far less value and interest.

      Happy to see you enjoyed it! I hope to see some of those dusty old films emerge from attics as people realise they can be rescued and much improved. If people no longer have access to a projector for the old home movies it's a small step to just dispose of the film it seems. Especially if there is no information on what it contains. But it's important to keep these old records alive as the world drifts in to a magnolian homogeneous mush.
      It is remarkable the quality of some of the old B&W photos, even going back to mid 19th century. It seems the introduction of colour, mass film production and all those plastic throwaway cameras had a major impact on the photographic record of the 70's and beyond.
      If anybody comes across some interesting old film in their attic and it's not beyond restoring I'd be interested in seeing it with a view to upscaling. Though even the "AI" cannot rescue some film. If it's looking like an oversaturated impressionist painting with a blob of pink for faces and no more, that's never going to be upscalable. Some old amateur 8 and 16mm film is beginning to surface partly restored or simply digitised, on RUclips. Some new channels are specialising in that alone.

    • @alanmusicman3385
      @alanmusicman3385 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@livinghistoryaienhanced Very true, there are limits to what can be done. As you say, there are a lot of things posted on RUclips from old film and - now - even from early Betamax or VHS tapes from the 1980s. Some of these look very good, but many just been digitised with no frame retiming/stabilisation which makes them less good than they might be.
      Anyone who keeps all their video or photos should always be sure to keep records of who is depicted and where they are, as well as the date. Boxes of old photos (and soon memory sticks full of them) without any of those things are of far less interest to descendents and future family historians.

    Thank you very much - very lovely restoration. Is the original film 16mm? It is amazing what can be recovered nowadays with AI, particularly from film stock. I'd imagine old video is far, far less amenable to such salvage treatment. Best wishes.

    • @livinghistoryaienhanced
      @livinghistoryaienhanced  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you. Great to hear you enjoyed it! I currently work directly from digitised versions. I just checked the original source and there is no information on the films original sizing. Filmed in Kodachrome, if that offers any clues :D
      I've had a few people approach me with video they were looking to improve. It can be salvaged and improved but it's a low resolution starting point. So you can't expect HD quality... yet. I found that sometimes there's an issue with the interlace coding in the original video and that has been carried over to the digitisation. That error blocks absolutely all current AI models that I tested, there was zero improvement apparent after multiple tests.
      I worked on this film back in early March '23. The AI has moved on significantly, has as my skill set and approach to restoration, since then and is improving all the time.
