  • Tokyo by Train (2016). What would it be like to ride on Tokyo's trains from first train to last? Japan's trains are famous for their convenience. I love them so much I decided to ride them all day, visitings tons of stations (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo). Sadly, I never got pushed on a train during rush hour by the infamous train pushers.
Yes, this is a re-upload from my Life Where I'm From X channel from 2016. I figured that there are many people on this main LWIF channel that have never seen this video before. Plus, let's try out Premiere for the first time and watch it together!

Hey everyone! Hope to see you at the Premiere (July 4th, 10PM JST). First time trying this. Decided to do it with an old favourite from the X channel (i.e. this is a re-upload but I'll be watching and commenting on it live at that time). Bye for now!

I looked at when people most watch my videos, and it starts at 10pm JST, so that's why I picked that time to do the premiere. I didn't realize it was America Day that I scheduled the premiere on, but if it's any consolation, I also forgot about Canada Day. What I mean to say, is happy days to everyone!

In some of those posts or columns, there you would find inscribed the whole route and the length of time between stations. Also, there's a big board indicating the whole schedule of the day. What amazed me is that the time inscribed on the schedule is always met.

Same, was planning to go on a year-long stay next year. How things are looking right now, doesn't seem like it will happen (I doubt things will get immediately better in 2021, my country has one of the worst infection rates in Europe so we probably won't be allowed anywhere for a long time and if the Olympics do happen next year then that's also not a great year to choose to say). What I notice about this is that Japan is constantly developing to some of the problems it's facing even though it is seen as superbly developed than the rest of the world (the road repairs, late trains, and even people falling on train tracks). Hey Greg, I love this video! This is a bit off-topic, but I read that foreigners living in Japan with permanent residency wouldn't be able to return if they went abroad after the travel ban went into effect, whereas Japanese nationals who did the same would only have to self-isolate for 14 days. It was stated that permanent residency holders could only return on a case by case basis, but Japanese natives didn't have to go through this hurdle. Non-permanent residents with regular work visas wouldn't be able to return at all, and still be obligated to pay their bills/taxes, so I was wondering if it was true and your take on it. There were many foreigners living in Japan who expressed disappointment and felt like they weren't being treated equal regarding re-entry

    Shinjuku Station Legend
JR Shinjuku Station is also the busiest station in the world, with 742,833 got off in 2012. That's a frightening figure. First of all, they don't include the number of people getting on the train. Even so, there is still a large number of passengers on the train.
A day at Shinjuku Station begins with the 4:32 a.m. train to Chiba (the first train to leave Nakano Station), and ends with the 1:01 a.m. train to Mitaka (the first train to leave Chiba Station), which makes stops at every station on the Chuo and Sobu lines.
In other words, Shinjuku Station is idle for 211 minutes in a day. The average time Opening hours in Shinjuku Station is 1199 minutes, or about 20 hours.
Considering the 742,833 passengers on the train, that means about 620 passengers per minute, and the number of passengers getting off the train, that means an average of 1,240 passengers per minute are coming into Shinjuku Station.
The average number of people who get off the train at Shinjuku Station is about 620 per minute, but the average number of people who get off or get on the train is about 1,240 per minute. If you think about it this way, you can understand why Shinjuku Station is so terrifying.
This includes early mornings and late nights. If it's not a rush hour, it's not a problem to think that 1,000 people come out of Shinjuku station every minute during the daytime.
Shinjuku Station has the world's three top ratings in terms of number of passengers, number of trains, and number of exits. Tokyo Station is said to have more trains than Tokyo Station, but that's only for JR Lines, and not for Keio, Odakyu, Toei, and Tokyo Metro. If you include Tokyo Metro and Seibu, Shinjuku Station is the most popular station in the world, and it is said to be the most popular station for one day. There are between 9,000 and 10,000 trains in total. This is more than three times as many as Zurich Central Station, which has the highest number of trains outside Japan.
The number of exits is said to be about 200, but there are many theories and this is not clear, because it can be used as an exit for the building The reason for this is that there are a lot of train stations in Shinjuku, and the underground passages are spread out in all directions.
The exact number of passengers, number of trains, and number of exits at Shinjuku Station is not clear. However, all the studies agree that Shinjuku is the most popular station in Japan. Shinjuku Station is the most amazing station in Japan.
It's so large that the southern end of the Saikyo Line platform is closer to the neighboring Yoyogi Station than to Shinjuku Station. There's even a new station within the station area called Shinjuku Nishiguchi Station (not Shinjuku Station West Exit, but Shinjuku West Exit).

Nah Haneda has an international terminal. We fly in and out of Haneda from Seattle all the time. Just depends where you are flying in from or out to! Same when we went to Singapore and Bangkok we also went out of Haneda.
And again so many fmiliar sights. For a number of years we would stay at one of the Toyoko inn's on the east side of Shinagawa station just a short bus ride away until we switched more to central Tokyo and this last time was in Roppongi Ichome area in a small apartment for last winter.
I hope you used a day pass as cheapest way to see the city with so many transfers HA HA

Love it ! And was excited to see some of the stations and lines I’ve ridden during my last 2 trips to Japan. Like you know we have nothing like that here in Canada 🇨🇦, even in Toronto and it really is a shame. I keep saying if they want to fix the TTC/ transit systems here they need to study the ones in Japan. Especially Tokyo. I almost exclusively use the trains/ transit when I’m there, only using a taxi when my knee gives out.
Though I like Tokyo, Kyoto is my favourite city there. Have you done a video for Kyoto? If not would you consider doing one?
I’m excited for my next trip to Japan. You’ve shown me a few places I hadn’t seen before.
Thank you as always for your work.

Based from my train ride experiences from nearly 1 and a half year ago, it's mostly the BIG train stations and stations near a certain popular tourist spot that has a lot of people riding in or off the train stations. Shibuya, Akihabara, the Haneda Airport station, Tokyo Skytree stop, and Shinjuku are the ones I noticed that has a lot of passengers at a time. Local lines, ofc. If you can't read the train lines map, always ask someone politely. I got lost/got off the wrong station a few times and asked the people around and they'll help for sure. Also. SUICA cards are SOOOO handy!

Aw I miss Tokyo so much. So many memories from trains alone cause you’re constantly using them. From running to trains to witnessing all the people. I even miss the sounds from the train station. An embarrassing story id like to share is I was travelling with my partner with all my luggage and it seemed to be peak hour. We were squashed in and right in front of the doors standing. I had nothing to hold onto while the train moved so I shifted my weight with my legs and held on to my bags. The train was moving at a considerable speed and then for some reason the train driver used the emergency brake! My entire body flew into a business man (who looked like he wasn’t having a good day to begin with) whoopsie. I just bowed my head and said sorry but no reaction just a look of annoyance haha. Oh well. But I will take that suggestion in Greg. Next time I’m in Tokyo I will jump on a train with no agenda and explore. Keep up the content it’s great stuff! Cheers from SYD

This was a fantastic documentary in 2016 and it's still just as great in 2020! It was also nostalgic seeing many of the same stations and streets that I've visited, especially since we can't travel back to Japan right now. Thanks for the throwback to some quality content and for all of the new projects you're working on and sharing with us. Your docu-game is still on fleek!

I really wish I had the energy and willpower to learn the language. I do want to eventually travel to Japan when I have enough money saved up (from the UK) but I'm a little worried about the language barrier, I know some people have a good ear for them but I struggle.
I've been thinking maybe instead of trying to learn on my own I should see if I can find a tutor who can guide me and then I'll feel forced (when I'm not self-motivated enough) to do the work because someone else is relying on me to do it.

My wife and I visited Tokyo back in 2018 and the trains were defo the best place to get around. Although our hotel was right next to the meguro river, and instead of getting the train from naka meguro station we would often walk to shibuya station cause I just loved that walk to start the day

How many spare batteries do you carry with you? For 2 cameras just for taking snapshots, not filming, I carry 2 original (Fujifilm) batteries (sold with the cameras) and 6 after market Patona batteries. I get around 300 shots per battery. I don't need to recharge all of them at the same time. When travelling, I end up using up to 3 batteries per day.

    Greg,
I was surprised you would repeat a four year year old program without an epilogue! Where I live near San Francisco USA, public transit ridership is down anywhere from 70 to 90 per cent. In London U.K. both the transport for London, and the pm told people not to ride public transit. In New York a major private employer made riding public transit to work a termination offense Car sales are way up as people who can not work at home, change from pt to the car!
What is the story in the Kanto region? A you tube star said a parking spot in central Tokyo could cost more than the apartment rent!?

When you come to Japan, I recommend you don't get on the train especially JR from 7 am to 9 am cuz you will see hell on Earth.

Wait are the scensors that strong that they register the card in your wallet?

    • @zam023
      @zam023 4 года назад +1

you do not need strong sensors for that. RFID readers send radio waves that goes thru material and the chip just sends back info the same way. It is not like it is trying to scan your card from 1 meter away, which it could not do anyways. For this type of readers you have to be really close for it to read.

I really enjoyed watching this video.
One thing I would like to say is that standing in a gangway is dangerous. Japanese railways value safety, but if the train derails, the people at the seams of the trains will be crushed!
By the way, the gangway is provided for evacuation from fire.

I was about to start by the plastic bag at 2:53 but more i was watching this video, more i felt nostalgic. Even sad.
I only took the subway, once with people, once on my own and i must admit, that was really cool. Even at the end of the day as it was a very long one.
I miss the warning/announcment sounds in station...
I can't believe it's still crowded late at night.
Last thing, would i do the same as you did, taking trains and going in other cities ? I don't think so, to be honest. Except if i live there which won't happen *Still in sad mood*
Anyway, i really appreciated your video.

Haneda is the better option if you are flying into Tokyo, especially those travelling with family and large bags . Check for flights using HND as the destination. Central Tokyo is about 20 minutes and coats about 6000 yen . so you can take a taxi to your hotel and not have to lug around large bags all over the trains.

Hi friend I like to watch your videos. Maybe like over a year ago, can't remember. The fist time I saw one of your video it was the one you made with your kids, by the way lovely kids. You took a ride with them in the train to eat at at a family suchi belt restaurant. I was amazed. Never seen a rest. like that. I kept watching it over and over. Felt that I needed to visit Japan for the food and see the culture. So I kept watching lots of videos to learn prepared myself and not worried. Then I started searching for a video that shows how to spend a day sightseeing using public transportation, how much can I do in one day in a small budget, places to see and eat. If using a one day train pass is good, and how far from the station are the places I'll like to see. Time and distance. Do you know if any vloger made one like that please let me know. Thank you 😊 for yours videos !Inspiring and educational.
