Day After: I watched this movie at cinema when I was a young man. Even if the special effects seem poor today, it has been and still remains a great movie. Brutal and deeply realistic. 😥

To those that weren't around when the day after was shown, I'll never forget the lasting impression that stayed into the next day. Going to school had a totally empty feel to it. Years went by and I thought I forgot. That was until 9/12.
These movies show only the lucky ones who will be vaporized instantly, not those who are burned and irradiated and will suffer for days, weeks or months before dying in excruciating suffering.
Yeah, The Day After shows all the poor folks who “survived” long enough to lose hair, nails, etc. Put it this way, no one is winning any beauty contests after that.

A very important and interesting thing to note about this movie is it never shows the American counter strike vaporizing the USSR. The reason is simple: It doesn’t matterz. Losing a nuclear war isn’t about numbers on a scoreboard. Once you get hit by one nuke, it’s silly to argue that you won on a day when a million people died. The only way to win nuclear war is not to play.
What is even more interesting (for the time period) is that by moving the scene with the "300 missiles inbound" to after the Minutemen launch it's left intentionally ambigous who actually started the full exchange and who is the one counter-attacking because that also doesn't matter. That scene comes a lot earlier in the original documentary and the reason it suddenly cuts from the silo to the woman in her bedroom here is that in the documentary the dudes get vaporized before they can turn the keys and the US gets crippled without the coungter strike.
The Day After and Threads were the few films that unapologetically showed the true horrors of nuclear fallout and a total collapse of modern civilization, and even what they showed was somewhat sugarcoated when compared to how bad it could really get.
Agreed. Honestly, as someone who has researched the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, there were many accounts of more brutal injuries that survivors had reported like people's skin melted and hanging down, eyeballs hanging out of their sockets, intestines and brains spilling out, missing limbs, etc. But they only show charred corpses and less graphic burns (in Threads) so a lot of the brutality was really omitted. However, my dad (who was ten when The Day After came out and had to fight for the TV to watch it) made a good point in that ABC probably had restrictions on what it could broadcast. Perhaps it wasn't within their budget or capabilities to recreate. That said I do prefer The Day After's atomic bomb sequence over Threads' atomic bomb sequence, with the terrifying highlight of seeing the people get vaporized.

I was 9 yo when The Day After came out. I can’t remember if it was televised in Australia or was shown in cinemas, but I only saw the film in full last night (!). Even with the Ye Olde special effects, the movie still packs a punch because this isn’t sci-fi, this could happen any time if enough people in power are crazy enough.

In this time, there were over fifty thousand warheads on the planet, and one of the gentlemen expressed pessimism over ever seeing a world with even twenty thousand warheads total.
At one point there around seventy thousand nukes in the world. It's ridiculous, when you consider how powerful each missile is & how many warheads each one can carry. Probably take less than a thousand to destroy humanity & all living creatures.

I was 13 years old when this movie came out and still to this day it scares The living daylights out of me. I hope within my lifetime that does never happen

I'm an engineer by trade and physics nerd by heart. I'm a bit of a party pooper when it comes to movies because I always expect realism even at the cost of losing entertainment. In my no so humble opinion, James Cameron is the world's best Director because he is an engineer too! Even when he deals with Sci-Fi, he always makes it believable to at least my standards of believable...and they are high. :D The Nuclear detonation in Sarah Connor's dream in T2 is brilliant! It is the only one that is close to what really happens. And what really happens is this: The flash is quite literally the creation of a star in our atmosphere. It will only live a few milliseconds but the plasma ball will be over 10 million degrees. Depending on the weapon's power from kilotons to megatons, if you are anywhere from 1 mile out to 20miles and exposed to the open air, you will either instantly vaporize or be severely burned and everything that can combust around you will be on fire. Superheated air will rush upward and form the mushroom cloud and at the same time the shockwave will be moving out for dozens of miles. The shockwave could put out some of the fires but when the air rushes back in at hurricane speeds to fill the void of the air rushing upward it will reignite all of the embers and start a firestorm. James Cameron is the ONLY director to get this sequence right. So much respect for that! Sorry, I just had to post that.
Yes, the scene in Terminator 2 is definitely the most realistic (and therefore the most terrifying) depiction of a nuclear explosion ever put to film. Much better than all the others.

I thank God that kids today have no idea what it was like to grow up during the Cold War. Every Wednesday, they test the sirens. I still get chills thinking of the nuclear war drills as a kid.

@6:10 get a load of that gorgeous mach wave breaking the sound barrier. Like a jet the size of a skyscraper zooming just above your head. They always leave that sound out of nuke sequences in movies.
I remember the first time the day after was shown; at the end Jason Robarts finds his home, two people are there, he tells them to get out, one of them offers him an orange. As the camera pans away Robarts can be heard crying and moaning briefly. In subsequent TV showings of the film, this scene was cut, which I didn't understand because it was the best scene in the movie.
I think I read that they (Day After, at least, I'm sure) borrowed from a documentary film that had been done prior to all this, as there wasn't anything else out there to replicate it. The military personnel that the director contacted did not want to cooperate in some ways, and footage I believe was part of that.

We have smartened up some. The most powerful bomb ever built and tested was in 1961. Research and development on them has pretty much stopped a long time ago. The world's nuclear stockpile are mostly antiques. Imagine how much worse the threat would be if nuclear research had kept up with other technology. Bombs would be in the gigatons by now.
I was young when the film threads was released and it scared the crap out of me. At one point after I was newly married there was talk of nuclear war, we lived near docks and thought it was a target so discussed if it happened we'd just watch it and get vaporised ,who the hell would want to survive anyway. Never understood why anybody could invent something so heinous ,must of had a sick mind.lets hope it never comes to that and the world leaders decide our world is better off without nukes
I remember watching this at the time it was released. The movie, and in particular this scene, was harrowing then and it still is today. Especially with what’s going on in the world right now - truly terrifying.

Whenever I watch this clip I remember German rocket and nuclear program from ww2 era. In both that cases, your country was successful, but last German government leave that programs to USA and USSR ( Russia ), after the war. I was 9 when "the day after" came out. Nuclear war was a legitimate threat every day of our lives back then. That movie terrified me to my bones back then.

Saw this when I was fourteen and never forgot. Saw threads around the same time frame and really never forgot. These need to be shown on tv in all nuclear countries annually, because sadly, this is where we're heading fast. The book of Revelation.
The animals were outside in the fallout the entire time. The people were in the basement away from most of that dust. But (spoiler alert) those two ended up getting radiation poisoning from running out into the fallout dust. My biggest gripe is that they had horses to ride afterwords, and took a buggy to the hospital.
Something like what is depicted in the ending of all these movies has not happened yet and hopefully it will never happen both leaders of both US and Russia are really working hard to avoid this outcome

Horrifying thing is. The Day After could easily fit the Terminator universe as Skynet had to wait a few years before deploying killer machines as it had to build up it's military infrastructure and construction facilities. Nobody knew who started it.... But not too long after Judgement Day... The Machines rose from the ashes of the Nuclear fire... Their war to exterminate mankind raged for decades.....
@Dooray MArshall It probably did at several points. In the Sarah Connor Chronicles it used one on Eagle Rock Bunker and killed all 200 humans within except for one survivor who was immune. This immunity was made into a vaccine very quickly. I'd imagine that Skynet tried this many times. There aren't many humans left by 2029 (I'd estimate low millions out of the 5.84 Billion that existed before Judgement Day on August 29th 1997)

Я помню когда ещё был школьником.. и это было п..... как страшно да ещё и после вечернего сеанса "Босоногого Гена". Постоянно были реалистичные видения ядерных взрывов когда шёл по улице.. Да и кошмарные ночи долгое время.. Страшный фильм.. и теперь ещё осознание того факта, что возможно скоро все мы придём к этой точке, судя по стремительному развитию событий. Но не дай Бог!
Although "The Day After" was an excellent movie, there are some minor discrepancies...such as Jason Robards living through a groundburst and walking in nuclear fallout. The very second that groundburst made impact, he would not be turned into an x-ray, he would instantly be burned to death. I also took an excellent course in 1989 about Geothermic Nuclear Comparisons in undergraduate school. Sure woke me up!
funfact, or not so fun fact. If you are near a nuclear blast where you are basically turned into a skeleton, the action of such would happen so fast that your brain wouldnt even have time to process it. One second you exist, the next you dont.

A very important and interesting thing to note about this movie is it never shows the American counter strike vaporizing the USSR. The reason is simple: It doesn’t matterz. Losing a nuclear war isn’t about numbers on a scoreboard. Once you get hit by one nuke, it’s silly to argue that you won on a day when a million people died. The only way to win nuclear war is not to play.

What is even more interesting (for the time period) is that by moving the scene with the "300 missiles inbound" to after the Minutemen launch it's left intentionally ambigous who actually started the full exchange and who is the one counter-attacking because that also doesn't matter. That scene comes a lot earlier in the original documentary and the reason it suddenly cuts from the silo to the woman in her bedroom here is that in the documentary the dudes get vaporized before they can turn the keys and the US gets crippled without the coungter strike.

The Day After and Threads were the few films that unapologetically showed the true horrors of nuclear fallout and a total collapse of modern civilization, and even what they showed was somewhat sugarcoated when compared to how bad it could really get.

Agreed. Honestly, as someone who has researched the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, there were many accounts of more brutal injuries that survivors had reported like people's skin melted and hanging down, eyeballs hanging out of their sockets, intestines and brains spilling out, missing limbs, etc. But they only show charred corpses and less graphic burns (in Threads) so a lot of the brutality was really omitted. However, my dad (who was ten when The Day After came out and had to fight for the TV to watch it) made a good point in that ABC probably had restrictions on what it could broadcast. Perhaps it wasn't within their budget or capabilities to recreate. That said I do prefer The Day After's atomic bomb sequence over Threads' atomic bomb sequence, with the terrifying highlight of seeing the people get vaporized.

I was 9 yo when The Day After came out. I can’t remember if it was televised in Australia or was shown in cinemas, but I only saw the film in full last night (!).
Even with the Ye Olde special effects, the movie still packs a punch because this isn’t sci-fi, this could happen any time if enough people in power are crazy enough.

I'm an engineer by trade and physics nerd by heart. I'm a bit of a party pooper when it comes to movies because I always expect realism even at the cost of losing entertainment. In my no so humble opinion, James Cameron is the world's best Director because he is an engineer too! Even when he deals with Sci-Fi, he always makes it believable to at least my standards of believable...and they are high. :D The Nuclear detonation in Sarah Connor's dream in T2 is brilliant! It is the only one that is close to what really happens. And what really happens is this: The flash is quite literally the creation of a star in our atmosphere. It will only live a few milliseconds but the plasma ball will be over 10 million degrees. Depending on the weapon's power from kilotons to megatons, if you are anywhere from 1 mile out to 20miles and exposed to the open air, you will either instantly vaporize or be severely burned and everything that can combust around you will be on fire. Superheated air will rush upward and form the mushroom cloud and at the same time the shockwave will be moving out for dozens of miles. The shockwave could put out some of the fires but when the air rushes back in at hurricane speeds to fill the void of the air rushing upward it will reignite all of the embers and start a firestorm. James Cameron is the ONLY director to get this sequence right. So much respect for that! Sorry, I just had to post that.

I remember the first time the day after was shown; at the end Jason Robarts finds his home, two people are there, he tells them to get out, one of them offers him an orange. As the camera pans away Robarts can be heard crying and moaning briefly. In subsequent TV showings of the film, this scene was cut, which I didn't understand because it was the best scene in the movie.
Anyone else besides me noticed that the missile control room seen in this movie was the same missile control room seen in the movie WarGames.
I think I read that they (Day After, at least, I'm sure) borrowed from a documentary film that had been done prior to all this, as there wasn't anything else out there to replicate it. The military personnel that the director contacted did not want to cooperate in some ways, and footage I believe was part of that.

I remember watching this at the time it was released. The movie, and in particular this scene, was harrowing then and it still is today. Especially with what’s going on in the world right now - truly terrifying.

Whenever I watch this clip I remember German rocket and nuclear program from ww2 era. In both that cases, your country was successful, but last German government leave that programs to USA and USSR ( Russia ), after the war. Now, they can start ww3 and first nuclear Armageddon on Earth. Maybe, even this year too. But, Germany would not be guilty for that. Because, Germany got prohibition about that weapon. Ironic? I was 9 when "the day after" came out.
Nuclear war was a legitimate threat every day of our lives back then. That movie terrified me to my bones back then.

The animals were outside in the fallout the entire time. The people were in the basement away from most of that dust. But (spoiler alert) those two ended up getting radiation poisoning from running out into the fallout dust. My biggest gripe is that they had horses to ride afterwords, and took a buggy to the hospital.

Horrifying thing is. The Day After could easily fit the Terminator universe as Skynet had to wait a few years before deploying killer machines as it had to build up it's military infrastructure and construction facilities.
Nobody knew who started it.... But not too long after Judgement Day... The Machines rose from the ashes of the Nuclear fire... Their war to exterminate mankind raged for decades.....
@Dooray MArshall It probably did at several points. In the Sarah Connor Chronicles it used one on Eagle Rock Bunker and killed all 200 humans within except for one survivor who was immune. This immunity was made into a vaccine very quickly. I'd imagine that Skynet tried this many times. There aren't many humans left by 2029 (I'd estimate low millions out of the 5.84 Billion that existed before Judgement Day on August 29th 1997)

Я помню когда ещё был школьником.. и это было п..... как страшно да ещё и после вечернего сеанса "Босоногого Гена". Постоянно были реалистичные видения ядерных взрывов когда шёл по улице.. Да и кошмарные ночи долгое время.. Страшный фильм.. и теперь ещё осознание того факта, что возможно скоро все мы придём к этой точке, судя по стремительному развитию событий. Но не дай Бог!
Although "The Day After" was an excellent movie, there are some minor discrepancies...such as Jason Robards living through a groundburst and walking in nuclear fallout. The very second that groundburst made impact, he would not be turned into an x-ray, he would instantly be burned to death. I also took an excellent course in 1989 about Geothermic Nuclear Comparisons in undergraduate school. Sure woke me up!
