A breeder gave me a Scottish Fold cat because his tail had an odd crook in it. Red used to wait for me to get home and then he'd tell me about his day as he walked me to my apartment. It really tickled my landlady. He was bright and loving. He stayed near me when I was home without constantly begging for attention. He was only five years old when he died of kidney failure. It broke my heart.

It is totally irresponsible to breed scottish folds. All of them suffer from ocd, an incurable disease, due to breeding. It is abhorrent to breed this breed and all who do so should be punished. It is just despicable to sell or buy these animals from a breeder.

I think I’ve been given a Scottish Fold kitten 3 days ago. It was from a friend of a family friend who has to move. The kitten is about 6 weeks old. I never met such a smart cat. She is so chill. I can leave her at night in the hallway and kitchen area and she understands. She just chills by herself, eating, playing with toys alone, sleeping, using the litter box, and repeat. We play for about an hour before work. She welcome me when I come home. She’s is such a fast learner too! Amazing breed! And her meows are so cute!

I love my Scottish fold but for my 2nd kitty I decided to get a British Shorthair bc of the health problems Folds are probably going get down the road. I am scared for my kitty Saphora 😺. I already put the deposit on her before I really knew how bad the OCD can get. Nobody would want to have their cat go through that. I know British Shorthair can get heart problems but Folds get the chance 3 of inherent pedigree problems. This is bc there breed with Persian and British/American Shorthairs sometimes to get certain looks and colors. This is a common way breeders develope breeds. But it can spread genetic problems into the breed bc of this. The Fold is a great example. So yes they are amazingly sweet and adorable cats but I just think that it's not fair to be breeding a cat that is not healthy bc of its cuteness factor. It's not cute to have a cat in pain 😔.
That's not the case with my cat now but that is bc she is still young and also l don't know how she is really feeling bc l don't speak cat. I will constantly be worrying and having to keep a constant eye on her health. Love u Saphora 💓 💗 💛

For better, or for worse, we had the cutest, barely old enough to be away from it's Mom, (5 wks ?) Scottish fold literally just show up on our doorstep ! She has been the most awesome little kitten ever :) Oh, and her name is "Owlie" :) Half the time she loves to cuddle up on my chest. The other half, she zips around and plays keep away :) Totally holds her own playing with our full grown (10 lbs) black and white too :) It's crazy, but most of the time, she is the aggressor !
She will be spoiled just like the rest of them for as long as she lives :) Oh, interestingly, she screamed and cried SO loud for hours until we found her, and brought her in. She has been the quietest cat I've ever met, ever since. She definitely picked the right humans to adopt.

If the cat carries 2 copies of the gene, or- fold to Fold bred- yes, there are issues. Our boy, and most well bred folds only carry one copy of the gene and is completely sound. You need to understand Genetics and DNA... good breeders also desex their kittens young to prevent unknowledgable buyers breeding unscrupulously, and only reputable registered breeding establishments can purchase Entires.

@@sleepyllama8893 also... if you are experienced with animals you can tell if they are in pain. A Scottish Fold with pain in its joints stops jumping, running, becomes solitary.. the tail becomes stiff- a true give away, and their joints swell. There is also a marked change in their spinal structure therefore visible to the eye. They stand up from sitting very slowly or try not to get up at all. Believe me, you CAN tell if your cat is in pain. Something I know my cat for one is not.

You mentioned though a debilitating disease in the Scottish Fold but does the straight also have the same issue (FOCD). I am so close to buying a Scottish Straight (father) X Bengal (mother) mix where both parents are registered purebreds that accidentally mated. These two breeds are complete polar opposites that I wanted to read up on both breeds so I basically wanted to know if besides the ears being different are there other differences or issues to be aware of between the fold and the straight or does everything hold true for both.

You must not have watched the entire video because she addresses that around the 7-minute mark. She says that Scottish straights don't have the health problems of Scottish folds and are a much better option for long-term peace of mind.

If you buy one from a very knowledgeable breeder, who only breeds with cats free from the debilitating form of OCD, and offer a kitten replacement guarantee due to their confidence in breeding sound healthy kittens, you won’t have an issue. Our kittens relatives are all free from joint disease. They obviously carry the OCD gene, but don’t display, or suffer from it.

GETTING A SCOTTISH FOLD? PLEASE READ! I have a Scottish Fold from a highly regarded show cat breeder. He was bred from a straight, and a fold. He is 5 and he ALREADY has joint issues. DO NOT encourage this breed, it's so cruel to breed them into pain. I wish I'd known 😢.

I like them, but keeping breeding them is just wrong. If people like folded ear animal the shouls get a rabbit or mice, not a cat with health problems because of that.
