Back in 2002, a stray scottish fold was living in my Uncle's backyard. I had just lost my tabby cat who I had since I was 4 and decided to take the cat in. Now 18 years later, she's on a strict diet and has benign tumors in her ears. She's constantly had a cone on throughout her life due to scratching her ears to bleeding. I have to clean those ears everyday and take her to her food because of her sore body. I'm grateful for her, and thankfully she's a mix. Her problems aren't as intense as pure folds. She's in great shape for 20. I will never take in or buy another SF again though.
Our Scottish Fold is 18 months old and already on expensive monthly medication due to an early developed arthritis. This breed requires extra care and attention, and can be very costly addition to the family. Any potential SF owner should understand that the Vet bills, medication and special diets will sum up to pretty substantial monthly costs. And if you cannot accommodate these expenses - please do not get this breed, otherwise your pet will slowly suffer in pain. Be responsible and realistic prior to inviting one to your family.
My first cat was a black shorthair housecat who happened to carry one copy of the mutant TRPV4 gene. She got a single fold. She lived almost 20 years. Now is 2 years she died. I miss her.
Anyway, is not that the cartilage of folds doesn't support the ears. Folds have hard cartilage. Ears of my cat were thicker and stiffer compared tho regular ears. They don't straight up when the cat grows past 3 weeks and remain just like those of small kittens.
Thank You so much for informing future cat owners about the risks of buying a Scottisch Fold. I'm considering a cat and Scottisch Fold was my first choice, I was sure that if a breeded crosses a Fold with a British cat (for example) all the kittens would be free of this condition. Now I know better, thank You for that!
Hi! Please do a video differentiating British, American, and Scottish Shorthairs, please! All these 3 breeds possess nearly the same looks (including shades and patterns) and personalities. It would be nice to find a video that shows how to tell them apart from one another. Thanks! Love your videos!
Any cat can be sick me i had two "exotic shorthair " i had one for 13 years and he had trouble with his teeths they remove almost all of them and he survive when he pass away i was so sad , i bought an other one but different color and him to has problem with his teeths he has 3 teeths to remove and it's very expensive,i love him and i will take care him.Having an animal it's like having children.😼😺❤💯
I have a kitten and her mom is a scotish fold and her dad a british shorthair and i just recently bought her so she is just 2 month's old and i bought for only 400 euro because i am from macedonia everything here is a lot cheaper than other countries
Thank you for this wonderful and informative video. I have a question about Blue Scottish Straight vs Blue British Shorthair. When I compare these two, I can't see the physical difference. What is the difference in physical description?
I didn’t know that about Scottish Folds. That’s sad. We have to stop breeding animals with genetic conditions. English and French Bulldogs and Pugs come to mind. They have trouble breathing all the time. They have so many health issues.
@@joshualam9746 I have both of them. Female Scottish fold and a male British short hair. The whole family fell in love with the Scottish fold because we got her a couple of weeks earlier and because she is more cuddly and careful while contacting our bare skins. The British short hair is so far enjoying isolation and hates being in hands (we have him for only 2 weeks so this might change)
One of my kitten is a long hair, but I have no idea if she is British or Scottish. 😭 Been trying to figure this out since she was a week old, smdh. EDIT: Okay, I think she is a Scottish straight long hair. At least I have a better idea now. Thanks!
All type of cat breeds suffer some form of ailment especially when they get older. Just make sure to get a Scottish fold that has a parent who’s from a different breeds. Most popular breed is British shorthair. My Scottish fold is 3 years old and healthy with no joint or health issues. All Scottish folds are susceptible to osteochondrodysplasia but not all will suffer the affects. Much like other breeds susceptible to their specific ailments. I would avoid the triple folded and go with a single fold.
You don't see hardly any stray cats in Britain. I've never seen a British short hair stray, and they're not going extinct. I think she's got her info from the Victorian era. BSH are expensive but cheap compared to US prices. Crazy prices
Thnxx for the info im into adopting than buying bt loved tht Scottish folds ear n was attracted to it n willing to get one bt after knowing she might suffer its a big NO i wont be able to see them suffering 😢
i have a scottish fold and he is 3 months old. We got it as a gift. SF is pretty cute but since i knew the health issues he would get, i did not really wanted him, i did not wwnt both of us to be in pain.He is very active and i really hope he will be healthy. He his kind of mix because his mothers mom was a brittish. ( his dad amd his mothers dad are scottish)
Because of the gene that causes the folded ears, all Scottish folds will develop the cartilage/bone disease called osteochondrodysplasia. However, if bred with a British, the chance of the disease being severe is greatly reduced. There are also joint supplements that lots of people give their folds to help even further. The video made it seem like all Scottish folds will suffer horrible painful lives and that just isn't true!
We got our British short hair for 300€ but without a certified family tree (we didn't need that since we dont want her to have kittens). Otherwise that would've cost as well
@@Lara2516 where did you get your British Shorthair if you don't mind me asking. that is a great price and i have been looking into getting one for so long!
@@nataliecunningham2029 from a private breeder, a nice family not far from us. A contact from "eBay Kleinanzeigen" (Germany). Make sure to pick a responsible breeder that doesn't have kittens too often from the same cat. The mom from our kitten was just 6 years old 2nd litter and 3 during her first litter. This was 3 years ago
Entonces … si se junta una data fold y un British…. El gatito que nazca con las orejas rectas será un scottish straight? Ese gatito de orejas rectar se podría juntar para la cría con un fold?
my scottish fold is 14.1 lbs and not overweight; he's a big boy for his breed. I'm pretty sure they cross bread with british shorthair somewhere in the past; otherwise how the hell is he that big/heavy? lol
I have a scot and itll be fine dw mine is 1 or 2 idrk but shes still rlly healthy and energetic and wow luck u got one for free mine costed 1k ur lucky!

Thx, i think im too poor to get this breed
I didn't know all of this stuff about Scottish folds :( it's sad since they look so cute. But I agree, better to adopt kitties who need good homes ♥
You know cats have sex right ? So the ones you don't buy will eventually have to be adopted I will never understand that logic both are a must!
but at least they have a shelter of some sprt 🤡🤡@@metalghost4869

It only happens if you breed the right breed

what? thats like serious health issues for the scottish fold
