We had to just put down a stray that shows up to my GF home and never left. She had it close to 18 years and I guess it was probably at least a year old when it showed up. Unfortunately she had sudden kidney failure
I'm so sorry. I lost my Beast (really big at birth) 2 years ago. Still have his Mom but he died at 9 years old. I was there for his first breath and his last. I still cry occasionally, I know it's pathetic, but I just miss my hairy little man
We had a Siamese and that was actually our first cat. he was the perfect. pretty chill, loving, cuddly and he also made some walks with us through the city WITHOUT a leash.
HOW do you train them to do that!? 😁 I would love to get my kitty to do that... and have him jump on my shoulder when he wants to rest. He follows me around the apartment sometimes.
@@joshk6066 i don't know if you can train something like that, or if it depends on the character. Our cat loved my father the most. I think they had a special bond so he wanted to be by my fathers side 24/7 I guess :D
The best cat is a shelter cat. All cats are wonderful though. I've had a Russian Blue mix, currently have a Maine Coon mix and a Ragdoll mix. I would say the description of all of these are very accurate in the video. My RB mix was my first cat and she was the sweetest, absolute best cat ever. She was very smart and patient with me as a child.
My parents adopted Gwen from a shelter. She’s a black cat and they had a really bad experience with their other cat. He ran away and fucking hated us. *My mom was pregnant with me at the time*
@@ShadeATV I wish I got my dog from one she has so many problems she was abused so she has a peeing problem (when scared and happy) she bite me if I have my boots on and will growl if I'm around when she eats (I could fix it easy if I got her as a puppy)
@@sandybrown3373 so you'd rather buy a dog like its a piece of clothing instead of putting in time to help out your mistreated dog or put up with her trauma? shelter dogs deserve to be loved too. and we should stop letting people make a business out of animals like theyre objects. very weird of you to say this
My first cat was a Russian blue. Had her since I was a kid. Got out of the Army in 2010, came home and heard she died a few months before that. Still miss her so much, was such a loyal loving companion. I will never forgive myself for not being there for her when she died. Its been extremely painful to live with even 13 years later. Rest in peace Shadow, I love you.
I am so sorry for your I also just have a question, do russian blues cause trouble, break things and run around a lot? I am looking for a chill hypoallergenic cat breed that wont cause trouble
I got a domestic shorthair from a neighbour and he's really improved my life. I love him so much and he loves me a lot too. I wouldn't trade him for any other cat in the world, just because his personality is so unique.
I recently adopted a Bengal mix and agree they’re probably not the best for first time pet owners or people who spend a lot of time outside the house. They’re very sweet but require a ton of attention and are very active. She’s super smart so she gets bored/naughty if she doesn’t get enough interaction. That said, I absolutely adore her. As an experienced cat owner, I often find I develop a deeper bond with the more challenging kitties.
Oh dear lord my 9 week old ragdoll kitten is the exact opposite of everything that you described. He runs around at the speed of light and is the most hyper kitten I have ever seen in my life. I am praying to god he calms down by 1 year of age
Our shorthair mix kitten was very hyperactive and kept chasing our 9 year old adult cat (4 times her size) around the house. Once she got big enough to wrestle with him safely at about 1 year of age, she calmed down considerably. Kittens generally need other kittens to play with and crave constant attention.
My family had a siamese cat when I was growing up. She lived to be 21. She was a fun and playful cat, but VERY vocal. Her voice was very loud, much more so than other breeds of cats. The narrator didn't mention how vocal and loud siamese cats are.
Right? Like the 2 things I know about Siamese cats is that they're smart enough to get themselves in trouble and they're VERY vocal. I've never owned a Siamese.
I had a Burmese who was very affectionate, but they don’t have such a loud voice. They also come in pointed coat colors! He followed me everywhere, like a dog. We even had to put a litter box in the bathroom because he wouldn’t be shut out. When he was old, he would wait for me to use the facilities so he could come with me. That’s how much they dislike being alone. That’s why I got him a kitten, whom he loved. It’s best to get a smaller companion, as they run small and could be pushed around. He was an excellent cuddler! Pointed cats are what many are looking for in a Siamese, so those who don’t like constant loud chatter might consider a Champagne Burmese (brown points on cream to tan fur).
I have a Maine coon and he talks to me like he understands me and whenever I'm eating he sits next to me an taps me on the shoulder until I let him either sniff or lick what I'm eating
I'm a first time cat owner and I chose a Sphynx as my first pet, but I was very thorough with my research so I went in well prepped for my girl being high maintenance. If you get one prepare to be the centre of their entire world, they will want to play and snuggle with you more than anything and the video is right that they need a LOT of attention. They're a really dog-like cat breed and are endlessly clever and entertaining, I wouldn't change my goofy girl for the world, every day is an adventure with her.
I've been a dog owner my entire life, but when a domestic shorthaired cat entered my living space I fell in love! He also has a pink nose, which is quite rare on cats with his markings.
I have a Mainecoon and they definitely can get destructive. I got sick for about a week and couldn't play with him as much and he chewed through 3 cords and my boyfriends shoes. 😑 Now that I'm healthy we're back to 20 minutes of play time every few hours and no more issues with cords.
I had a friend whose family had many cats including many Maine Coons They were outside a lot and very sweet But when I recently researched pictures of Maine Coons I was terrified 😅 they were huge (to me when I was like 9) but looked nothing like the pictures But I honestly would love a playful cat. Sadly not possible when starting a job
I have two non-breed cats, alley-cats…..they just regular and that makes them so adorable and thankful for everything i do for them. Ps. Adoption is the best way to have a loving cat for life.
adopting mixed breeds is a good thing to do, but it doesn't guarantee they are loving, unlike pedigrees which have definite breed personalities, you just don't know what you are going to get.
I would do that. It's just near impossible for me. If you get a kitten (which I would prefer because I have a toddler and I would like them to grow up together and not fear my son being attached and losing the cat earlier than expected) you need to get 2 unless you have 1 cat at home already. If you get an elderly cat they either don't like children, don't want to live in a family that goes to work a bit or they're already coming in with health problems. If I was in the position to I would adopt elderly cats. Simply because I can't stand it when animals lose their owners or are pushed away. I adopted from a shelter before (a guinea pig that was given up due to small income of the owners) and he is so happy now with me and my piggies and my son loves him. Since my son is so far very good with animals I would love to always have a pet so he can learn how to properly take care of a pet because it's very important to me that he treats animals well and with love and respect. My guinea pigs are turning 6 this year and though they're still all healthy and happy... They don't have the life span of cats or dogs..... due to work and my fear of dogs we can't get a dog though. I don't know but I will try and see if I can get a cat (from a shelter or people I really trust with pets) but I feel like I won't have any more pets ever
Best thing about this video that they told us to not get one if we can't pay attention and fulfill cats requirements cuz this are living fluff not just for showpiece for your home 👍
I agree with the siamese. We are a first timer who received a siamese from a relative. They are NOT laid back at all. If you put in the effort though they are very rewarding. You have someone to chat with. A puzzle to solve everyday and they are really intelligent.
as somebody that lives with 2 birman i just gotta say: THE BEST! theyre cute, and REALLY affectionate, whilst the female often comes to you when she wants to be pet she also likes it if you come to her and even allows you to scratch her around the face, and whilst the male usually doesnt come to you, even he enjoyes being pet and scratched. overall, pretty nice cat breed, and i love mine!
@@thatcarguy2492 we looked in a big city. We looked online and found one. The wait was about a month. They have to be 2 months old before they can be adopted.
We just got an exotic and he’s so sweet. Everything said is true, he loves spending time with humans, even if it’s just sitting next to them. It’s important to choose a well bred kitten otherwise a bunch of health issues will come up.
I have two lovely Siberians for my first cats and they do well playing with each other and keeping each other company. They have quite opposite personalities though: my male is extremely affectionate but shy and easily spooked, while my female is outgoing, vocal, and quite the demanding little princess. And yes, their fur is absolutely amazing
I have a Siamese (long haired) as my first cat. She’s about a year old now and is incredibly intelligent. She loves to play fetch and “hunt.” She is great with our dogs and loves people. When we come home, she runs to the door just like the dogs. But she loves attention and gets jealous when the kids or other dogs get attention. She complains by meowing loudly and will get into trouble when she is bored. She gets into everything! But because we are used to dogs, she is a great cat for us.
I love my korat, he is affectionate toward me showing his Siamese side, but is friendly with everyone else. He's talkative and requires some daily play but he's a sweet and fun cat
I had a Norwegian Forest Cat and never owned a cat prior. The biggest problem was her interacting with children and other pets. Apart from that was a very funny cat.
My advice: Dont start with a kitten. Go to the shelter, tell them about ur living circumstance, so they know, what kind of cat would suit that (indoor, outdoor etc), tell them what kind of personality u would like - selfsufficient, social, whatever fits ur personality. In my experience, breed doesnt really matter, cats have personalities just like human, u need to find a cat to fit ur personality and ofc ur living situation (u cant have a farm mouse catcher as an appartment cat). Works for me, and as a bonus I get to give a home and a loving family to a rescue.
I've had cats for over 40 years. 4 years ago I got a Russian Blue at the SPCA. He was from a feral litter, so who knows how much Russian Blue he really is. He looks about 100%, but listening to you describe their personality traits........ you nailed him. That cat is so extra! He's way too smart. He needed so much attention as a kitten that me and my older cat couldn't keep him entertained. I had to get him his own kitten. It worked out beautifully. He's got a personality like no cat I have ever met before. I would definitely not recommend this breed for first time owners unless they have copious amounts of patience, time, and love.
The Russian Blue description is spot on!!! Mine will fight me over food! He’ll chew through his food bags if I don’t put them away fast enough when I bring them home. I had to put child proof locks on the cabinets and doors because he loves getting into stuff. They also get attached to one person in the household so that’s another thing to consider. And they’re super playful but they get over stimulated when they’re tired and can cause some damage
The best breed of cat is a mixed breed that needs that forever home. My wife and I have taken in many strays over our 54 year marriage. Fell in love with all of them.
I currently have an American shorthaired gray tabby and I love him so much. He’s my best fwiend and I always make sure to give him as many pets and cuddles as possible ❤️
I was lucky enough to have a Momma cat and her kittens. They were hiding under the concrete front steps to my daughter's house. Momma had seven kittens - they weren't feral and Momma had obviously been loved at some point. She got used to me and allowed me to stroke her so that I was soon able to capture all eight. I had no previous experience with cats and so it was an adventure to say the least. I loved every second of the chaos that ensued. The vet's assistant adopted one and I adopted two and the rest, Momma + 4 went to a no-kill shelter. The ones I took were an American shorthair and his sister a Bombay. The rest were tabbies: two grays (like Momma) and two oranges. Bottom line: Changed my life!
Got a Siamese having no idea what I was doing.. can confirm it’s harder than others. Had to get him a friend and now they are inseparable. But it’s basically abuse to have only 1 Siamese with no friends unless someone in the household stays at home
I’ve been on a wait list for over 2 years now for a Devon-Rex and yesterday I got the call that my kitten is here. xD I get to pick him up in 2 weeks, I was hoping you’d cover them in this video. I’m incredibly excited! 😆 Thanks for the video!
My first cat actualy was a Mainecoon. I got it from an old Lady who found it on the street as a kitten. It was by then quite large(bigger than her dog). When it was fully grown up, I thought I had a lion! Miss that guy!
Everything you said about Russian blue is completely true! I have a Russian blue mix but he looks mainly Russian blue, anyway, he’s very playful, can entertain himself but also loves playing on the stairs with our feet, and omg he is so demanding with his food,
I have silver shaded British Shorthair. My cat’s pretty active for a british shorthair. He loves running around and likes playing a lot too. Sometimes I wonder if he’s even a cat because he has so much energy. Even the breeders were like his parents were never this crazy hyper lol. Love him so much❤️
I had a bengal and he was the best, my parents got him when I was a toddler because another family didn’t want him, he loved me the most sure he was annoying at times but I still loved him. He was the best cat I’ve ever had
I have 3 adult maine coons and am awaiting 4 kittens next month ! Yes you are so right about maine coons, they are very time consuming. As a cat haver you will have to put a LOOT of time and passion into them. Since they are very active, each of them needs at least 2 hours of your FULL attention- with the girl I am playing nonstop, with the boys I go outside on a leash everyday for 2 - 3 hours. Also since they are very big, its difficult to hold them - they weigh as much as a 5-7 year old child ! And the grooming -.....lets not talk about that. They get matts. A lot. And ppl who say that that won't be a Problem and they will take care - No. NO. They fur is a Problem. No matter what you say Gladly for me its not that of a Problem. I literally grew up on a farm with cows, pigs, chicken, dogs, cats etc. My whole life I've had animals I've taken care of. They are my best friends. Nowadays im only taking care of my 3 maine coons, the 2 parrots of my grandma and the wild birds outside - I change the feeding stations outside everyday. But that is still something you have to commit to. There can't be no lazy days -
Me first ever as an adult cat is a Siberian and we're going on a year. She is possibly the sweetest and easiest to get along with cat I've ever met. And I love hearing her thuds down to the floor. She also seem to love my high anxiety Doberman. And the chats we have are my favorite part of the day.
Got a siamese and she's my first (though I grew up with cats). Sweetest cat ever. I spend a lot of time at home and was looking for an affectionate lap cat, so she's a perfect match. Just know that you'll be getting a lot of love (she's always sitting with/on me) and you will be followed around wherever you go. But if you live alone/spend a lot of time at home and are looking for a loving friend, I don't think there's a better breed.
One breed of cat I like is the Abyssinian. They are playful and friendly. Also, they require little maintenance, aside from the occasional visit to the vet. The only thing with this breed may be some health problems and they are not tolerant of cold weather. Our Otto was plagued with lung infections for his 17 year lifespan until he passed away last January.
I get a Siberian 7 years ago and it was my first cat. She is the best cat I can think of. I'm working 13 to 15 hours a day, and she is so calm and relaxed. I groom her and Play with her before I go to work. When I came home, we eat and then I play with her and I groom her. When I go to bed, she comes with me and sleep with me^^. And the best, when my Cat has to go to the Vet, my Chef has nothing against it. I can always leave work, when I have to^^. And when I'm not at work, she spend all the time with me^^! She's the whole time around me, we play, we run and we has so much fun^^! So yes when you are working, you must take time for the cat and this means you have not many time to sleep, but to be honest, even friends of mine, who are knowing more about cats than me, they always said, they don't know a better cat for me and my worktime ,than Sammy (my Cat^^).
My first cat breed was actually a siberian. I thought he was just a domestic long hair but when I got him at one year old I realized he was bigger than the average cat. My siberian baby is 7 now and he is super sweet he loves affection but can do okay on his own for a bit and he has his moments of play and being a rotten little booger but honestly a Siberian cat is the only cat I would really get
I have a Persian long hair as my first cat on my own. He’s the light of my life! I get so many compliments on how friendly and handsome he is, and even though he’s almost 1-year old now, he’s super still playful! He’s also my love bug, cuddle baby 😍 I’ve owned DSH and Ragdolls, the latter which I really enjoyed. But I don’t think I’ll ever get another breed other than Persian ever again.
I'm not quite sure if you can already say/be so sure of, that you'll never get another breed than a Persian with just 1-year experience. While yes, most Persian personalities are awesome, every Persian still has their own personas and they can vary. However, 1 year is no time and just you wait another 10 years or less and you will eventually see Persian's health problems. They are prone to breathing, eye, fur, teeth, and heart issues. Due to, short snout, narrow nose/air & tear-ways, big eyes leak tears more, their fur becomes easily matted, most have genetically bad teeth/a quick increase of tartar and an inherent heart deficiency or later in life can get a heart murmur sooner than most breeds (anything other than Persian/BSH/Birma related). While their personalities are a dream, if it weren't for the smushed face and the many issues they can have, a Persian would be one of the best breeds to own. I'm a vet nurse, btw, so sadly I have seen my fair share of Persian issues over the years.
Best kind of cat to get for a first time cat owner: get an older cat whose personality and needs are already known That's the only thing I always suggest. Being a certain breed doesn't immediately mean they are all the same, they have very different personalities and needs and you never really know what you get when you get a kitten. My first cat was 4 when we adopted him, we knew exactly what kind of cat he was and he was a perfect fit for us and we for him. Now he is 17 and we could learn to care for a cat on an easy cat first before then later adopting a feral kitten when he was 7 and even a few years later when I eventually moved out and in with my partner adopt two bengal cats.
That's exactly what I did. I adopted an 8yo siberian and avoided the kitten neediness, potty training issues, and other high maintenance things that an older cat just doesn't have.
The point of breeds is that they will have similar, predictable temperaments & activity levels on average. eg: "Persian and ragdoll temperament is a lot calmer and open to people than, say, angoras or vans." or "bengal average activity is much higher than British SH/LHs or Persians." These are due to genetic factors, so the cat's breed gives a very good idea on what its temperament will be like. Most well-bred cats stick to their breeds' characteristics. Just for comparison, in the dog-world it would be absurd to see a genetically 'reactive' golden, as apposed to tosas which were bred for such. Cats bred for their gentle nature, (ie. ragdolls, BSHs, persians etc.) still consistently score a higher average level of "friendliness" than those that have not. There have been 5 or so studies on variation of behaviour within cat breeds, and all of them have produced similar results. Breed similarity is in fact very consistent - the only inconsistency you get is with mixed breeds/moggies because there are too many factors and too much variation to accurately predict. Some are ____, others are ____ - as apposed to a breed where the majority are ____.
I’d also recommend a Turkish Agnora, mine is super affectionate, loves to play and run around and loves to cuddle and sleep next to me at night. I also have a tabby cat and they’re besties!!!
My mom got me a mixed siamese and I can definitely say she is a handful- I regret and also not regret getting her, because I heard she was from somewhere that didn’t really want her and was in a cage for long periods of time.
My first cats were a Persian and a Birman both were really lovely cats, now I have a Ragdoll who is super needy, naughty, affectionate and he loves us deeply. All of them have came from breeders but each one does have a story to tell. Louie the Persian was set on the table and he went straight to dad, he was the one that Louie was bought for. Mum brought Etoile the Birman before he was even born. His breeder knew from the day he opened his eyes that he was meant to be with Mum. He had old eyes for a kitten. When we first got Cosmo the Ragdoll he was shy, there wasn’t much there but when we got home we put him on the couch and he just settled in, like he owned the place. Yes you should get cats from the shelter but breeded cats are special too.
@@salomel6805 Honestly pretty well. The only problem was that Cosmo was younger then Etoile. 2 ragdolls would get along together but would make it snow every day. But it really depends on the cats personality.
I have a Ragdoll X Himalayan GORGEOUS and super soft (mine looks like a lilac point- with bright blue eyes)- Look up this mix, you wont regret it. Most chill, sweet and loving cat I have owned! I have another rescue cat who is 9, she is a domestic long hair... we call her 'Penny' If you aren't one of her people, count your fingers hehe. That being said I will always rescue before buying. This one was that one I had to have
I have a male cat named Jazz he’s a Norwegian Forest cat. Sweetest boy ever💙 He’s super playful and so beautiful. We’ve had him since he was an 8 week old kitty. He will be 14 years old by the end of this year. He’s super healthy and still has a lot of energy. I would describe him as a gentle giant for sure.🥺💙💙💙
I recently got a tabby cat, that's the patteren is Mackerel she sleeps half of the day and have alot of enegery in the night. She dosent really need to groom that often, maybe once or twice a week, but if you're a night owl like me definitely get a tabby cat!
Shelter cats for the win! Most of the time the breed doesn't matter (unless you want the pure bred trait). Cat's are cats and they're attitudes and personalities will be shaped by how you interact with it. The cat will train you too for it's needs. Just try to be conscious of what you're pet is asking for.
My first cat was adopted stray kitten who was always came to my apartment floor. Turned out he was Siberian. He had too much energy and curiousity, he was playful, and super clingy. He used to sit on my lap no matter how difficult is the position, he could even sit on my knees! He was climbing everywhere and checked every corner of the house. Missed him a lot.
Great video...thank you....i have a Bombay....he is the sweetest, best cat i have ever owned...i love ALL the cats i've had....but this one is so balanced as far as needing attention, independent play and cuddles....he loves to be groomed but it is not needed very often at all...he loves water and will swim if i give him the chance....really great breed :D
I have a persian mix (no clue what else he is but he has a squirrel-like tail and a doll-faced persian-looking face, not flat) who cannot go without being held for a few hours. I haven't had a cat for 10 years so he's technically like my first cat. He's so lovely and the only bad thing about him is that he needs to be brushed a lot and is very needy (not a problem since Im always available to hug him)
I'm so happy you mentioned British Shorthairs and Birmans because I really love them, and they are good for people who haven't had cats before - like me 😀
99.9% of cats out there are mixed breed mutts. They are consistently the healthiest, smartest cats, and shelters are full of them. Save a life, and adopt the best of all breeds in one mash-up great cat!
honestly all cats can be great breeds, each cat has their own personality. i have 3 cats, all different breeds, tho they all fit under the domestic shorthair. and they all have wildly different personalities. 1. a 6 year old male tuxedo, he loves to be picked up even tho he's a bit of a cow. loves being petted. 2. 5 year old domestic short hair common breed, elune she does not like being picked up, she will tolerate it for a few seconds, but she will claw your eyes out if you hold her to long. and is a little weary of people. 3 a year old domestic short hair chocolate. she is obviously a kitten still. but she does not like being picked up, tho she absolutely loves being petted. to the point if you pet her, she just flops on her side like a sack of potatoes and purs loudly. that's why i don't really take breed into account as all cats, from Russian blues to orientals to maine coons, have their own personalities.
I agree! Sphinx cats def need a playmate we have 3 of them haha but they’re the best! Mine are like little dogs they love walks playing fetch and come when I call them! I would def do tons of research about them first though as they were my first cat to ever own they require a lot of cleaning as they produce lots of oils but anyways great video!
Russian Blues are awesome cats for first-time cat owners and are such clowns that they'll make you laugh even as they get into things they really shouldn't. Mine doesn't just get on the kitchen counter. She gets on the wall cabinets above the counter and struts around looking all pleased with her self. They are also really healthy. Also the Nebelung (in essence a long-haired Russian Blue) are amazing. They don't require a lot of grooming. Mine is a lot more docile than my Russian Blue, though that may be just the cat and not the breed. She is more sneaky in her bad behavior though. Where my Russian will proudly proclaim that she has done something she isn't supposed to, my Nebelung will hide the evidence or attempt to put the blame on her 'sister'. Except when she wants to show just how clever she has been and comes running into the living room with a bit of my collector Lego in her mouth to give to me as a 'present'. She's very pleased with herself then.
My best friend had a creamy white Persian named Azzie. (Sir Aztec.) He was such a gentle, laid back and very tolerant gentleman. (Though he did dislike having baths.. He never ever lashed out. He just wanted to be comforted though the process.) Sadly he ran away... Helen was heartbroken.. We searched all afternoon.. but sadly, we never did find him. (He was old. from memory he was 18 - 19 years of age...) So I reckon he went off to pass peacefully away from us to spare us the pain. (Felines often do so.) Their last cat when Helen and I were young... Polly.. was a feral and never really liked them.. she left one day and never came back. My other friend Caroline had a shorthair named Crumpet.. crystal white. She originally was her sisters cat but she adopted her when her sister went to live overseas. She sadly passed only a month or so ago in her sleep. Now she has another shorthair Taby named Caspian. (Who she adopted from the animal shelter she has been volunteering at.) He is a cheeky little terror... yet I am sure he'll mature into a loving companion for her. (as she has both Aspergers and Bi polar.) My auntie and uncle's feral tuxedo short haired cat Miles was such a pain in the ass when he was young.. (scratching and hissing... etc.) but at the older ages he became a loving and excepting companion. (he lived to 24!) Then there was Gin Gin.. a short haired tortershell lass who was much the same in her early years but calmed down and was always looking forward to me visiting. She passed at the age of 17. Another family friend has a cat named Sapphire.. A Burmese miss who got along with the two past German shepherds Rony and Jessie. Very calm and very snuggly. My neighbour's cat (who I have nicknamed Pixie.) A very eye catching calico kitty.. sometimes greets me outside my house as she roams around. (I do get worried for her.. My dog almost killed her by cornering her in our knocked down wheelie bin.. as she had come into our yard...) I find it very sad and rather frustrating that her owners act like they dont give a shit about her safety. Before they got her, they had another calico cat who ended up bringing her 4 kittens into our backyard from their house! Kittens under our caravan! (luckily our dog was blocked off from that side at night!) We approached them but they didn't want the kittens or their mother any more.. So I took them to the animal shelter I was volunteering at. (They were all happily adopted by loving people.) But those bastards attitudes still pissed me off big time. I don't think I would be ever inclined to own a cat (I am more of a dog person.) If I get my next pup and decide to get a cat also? Maybe.. (as they can grow up together and such.) Working in the cattery at the shelter gave me more of a chance to bond with them. :)
Norwegian Forest cats, and mixed breeds with Norwegian Forest cat in their lineage, are great cats. Intelligent, some of the most loving cats out there, and other than the grooming I wouldn't say that they are high maintenance. Though as the video say, you need to spend quality time with them. My family had several during my childhood, and my cat of more than a decade had some Norwegian Forest cat in him, though I had to put him down due to kidney issues in march this year. Only cat I've ever known to give hugs. I remember back when I was a kid and I was sick with a bad fever and one of our Norwegians did his best to take care of me, keeping me company more than he would normally and grooming my hair. He'd never groomed any of us before that. He was also smart enough to figure out how to open the front door.
my first cat was a feral cat we found.my second and third are sphynxes.i love them to death they are the most loving kitties ever.the "feral" one even tho we ve had her since she was a few weeks old,has never been affectionate.
The best breed of cat is the one that claims you when you walk into the shelter or adoption event. Our breed was "orange" apparently. Then a calico showed up on our porch who decided she needed to be here too.
We have a Britishshorthairmix , It is the best cat ever ,I am a mom of 2 kids an and a Boxerdog ,I was very scared to get one ,but she is easy an not complicated at all,and the dog an her are just best friends 🥰
For a first cat? Looks like they are essentially the same cat as the domestic shorthair but with even shorter hair and it looks like people recommend it be indoor only. If that’s the case their personalities are usually cool but like any cat they have their own individual personality. I noticed the female cats almost seem smarter, or at least more calculated then males and males are usually really playful and energetic. For a first cat I would definitely go for a cat outside the kitten stage, their personalities develop and can accurately suit you better. My male russian blue is awesome and clingy and my two black females are really sweet and independent.
Different cats, like different dogs, and different people, have different personalities. Some cats like being held for a short time, others hate it. Some cats enjoy love-biting their owners, others are shy and prefer to run and hide in the closet or under the bed. A lot can also depend on how the kitten is raised and trained. Cats do not easily forget. As to grooming, the longer-haired the breed, the more grooming it needs, especially if it has an undercoat. Persians are gorgeous when well taken care of, but notorious for needing extensive grooming.
i got my burmese as a second cat... his previous owners gave him away after just two weeks because they noticed he was sad and always crying because they didmt have a second cat and couldnt provide him enough attention. I can say burmese cats are amazing but should never be held alone! But if you have a cat friend for them and daily time for long cuddles and playing they will be your best ever friends for sure!
When I was growing up, we had a chocolate brown Burmese cat, she had so much maternal instinct, we nicknamed her nana puss. She was with us almost 16 years
What you said with the Siamese is very correct. My Siamese mix named Amelia is SUPER pushy for attention. Luckily I’m not a first time cat owner, have had cats since my whole 10 decade life.
I currently have a black domestic longhair, he’s very large, very lazy, loves cuddles and family time. He doesn’t like being alone and gets anxious when we leave the house. He is a BIG eater and has a beautiful temperament. He doesn’t like visitors coming to the house and will avoid them. When he plays with us he has never uses his claws, he keeps them tucked away. He is a rescue cat that we adopted when he was 8 weeks old. He is our baby and very much loved.
My 2 cat Sky and Neli were a Russian blue and Maine coon (they sadly ran away). The Russian blue was a really cute cat, he let me nibble on his ear and he nibbles on my ear when I put his mouth to my ear. However the maine coon NEVER bit me ever in 2 years of his living...
because you know what you're gonna live with. If you live in an apartment and don't have much time to play with your cat you can't get a cat from a shelter. You should get the "lazy" one which id for exaple Ragdoll, British or Persian. Same with dogs. Every breed has their specific personalities and almost every time you know the pet's character before you get one...And some people need it, especially first owners....
I miss my first cat ever. She was a Norwegian forest cat who died a few months ago. I am 24. Damn thing lived to 20
i have one that is 18!!!
I have one that is 4 years old. Guess I have a lot of cat to look forward to.
We had to just put down a stray that shows up to my GF home and never left. She had it close to 18 years and I guess it was probably at least a year old when it showed up. Unfortunately she had sudden kidney failure
#sadness
My cat died a couple months ago too 😔
I'm so sorry.
Walks without leash is the best :).
@@FIRSTAIDKIT__ Aw hope my kitty and I can have that kind of bond =D
Nice
The best cat is a shelter cat. All cats are wonderful though. I've had a Russian Blue mix, currently have a Maine Coon mix and a Ragdoll mix. I would say the description of all of these are very accurate in the video. My RB mix was my first cat and she was the sweetest, absolute best cat ever. She was very smart and patient with me as a child.
My parents adopted Gwen from a shelter. She’s a black cat and they had a really bad experience with their other cat. He ran away and fucking hated us. *My mom was pregnant with me at the time*
I got a shelter cat I named Tabby. She is a Domestic short hair mix. She is playful, sweet, and a sleepyhead.
I love my cat, Tabby, She is so loving!
@Janbahavalli Pillai Yeah. I’m ashamed that I bought my dogs from a breeder.
I am so sorry for your
I also just have a question, do russian blues cause trouble, break things and run around a lot?
I used to work in a rehoming cattery. One thing I remember about the various Bengal cats, as well as being active, they were vocal
@@taraelizabethdensley9475 Yes! My girl is very chatty, especially if I’m a few minutes behind on her dinner! 😂
Oh dear lord my 9 week old ragdoll kitten is the exact opposite of everything that you described. He runs around at the speed of light and is the most hyper kitten I have ever seen in my life. I am praying to god he calms down by 1 year of age
My rag doll 5 months old and she’s the same way but also very very cuddly when she’s tired she loves laying on my chest and being pet
They need to run around to let out energy
@@lynnzie4203 Yeah I ended up getting another kitten so they can play together and tire each other out lol, it is a lot less work now thank god
You should’ve let him with his mom until at least 12 weeks this is why
@@SolisIlanga???
I've been a dog owner my entire life, but when a domestic shorthaired cat entered my living space I fell in love! He also has a pink nose, which is quite rare on cats with his markings.
I have a Mainecoon and they definitely can get destructive. I got sick for about a week and couldn't play with him as much and he chewed through 3 cords and my boyfriends shoes. 😑 Now that I'm healthy we're back to 20 minutes of play time every few hours and no more issues with cords.
I had a friend whose family had many cats including many Maine Coons
They were outside a lot and very sweet
But when I recently researched pictures of Maine Coons I was terrified 😅 they were huge (to me when I was like 9) but looked nothing like the pictures
But I honestly would love a playful cat. Sadly not possible when starting a job
I have two non-breed cats, alley-cats…..they just regular and that makes them so adorable and thankful for everything i do for them.
Ps. Adoption is the best way to have a loving cat for life.
Street cats are the best!
Nah I rescued two cats & they can’t stand me 😭😂😂
For you.
adopting mixed breeds is a good thing to do, but it doesn't guarantee they are loving, unlike pedigrees which have definite breed personalities, you just don't know what you are going to get.
Plus their coats don't mat as much as a Persian or other long hair cats. Beautiful cats, we have had two of them.
I have a mix that is part Scottish Fold. He has lived 17 people years so far. I love him so so much. He is the best cat I have ever had.
Sphynxes are so playful! Like my dogs. I have one as my first cat. He is EXTREMELY NEEDY but the best hahaha
How long did it take you to get him? I don’t want to be on a wait list for 3 years I want to know how long the average time to wait is 😅
@@thatcarguy2492 we looked in a big city.
I’m glad you mentioned DSHs and DLHs. They make lovely pets, and many need homes!
What an amazing video - thanks for sharing! Cats can be SO different not only from breed to breed but cat to cat.
I just adopted a sphynx and I love it so much
The Russian Blue description is spot on!!!
Got my polydactyl cat out of a barn. I have no idea what he is but I love him🥰
I was lucky enough to have a Momma cat and her kittens.
My wonderful, beautiful domestic cat just passed away. She was abandoned. I took her in, and she has been so loving to me for 12 years. What a loss. 💔
I’ve always had shelter cats so I’ve never known what breed they were lol. I just got the cat I found to connect with at the shelter lol
A lot. And ppl who say that that won't be a Problem and they will take care -
No. NO. They fur is a Problem. No matter what you say
Gladly for me its not that of a Problem.
My ALH forest cat is wonderful.
Very affectionate.
Very talkative.
Very smart.
Very frisky.
1) British shorthair
2) Scottish cats
3) Birman
4) American Short hair
5) Exotic Short hair
6) Domestic Short hair
Thank you
1) Street cats
One breed of cat I like is the Abyssinian. They are playful and friendly. Also, they require little maintenance, aside from the occasional visit to the vet. The only thing with this breed may be some health problems and they are not tolerant of cold weather. Our Otto was plagued with lung infections for his 17 year lifespan until he passed away last January.
so sorry for your loss :(
I get a Siberian 7 years ago and it was my first cat.
My first cat was a Siberian forest cat and I’d do it again in a heart beat
Best kind of cat to get for a first time cat owner: get an older cat whose personality and needs are already known
That's the only thing I always suggest.
The point of breeds is that they will have similar, predictable temperaments & activity levels on average. eg: "Persian and ragdoll temperament is a lot calmer and open to people than, say, angoras or vans." or "bengal average activity is much higher than British SH/LHs or Persians."
These are due to genetic factors, so the cat's breed gives a very good idea on what its temperament will be like.
Agreed
Things like this helps me understand what they may have been like pre modern times, thanks
I’d also recommend a Turkish Agnora, mine is super affectionate, loves to play and run around and loves to cuddle and sleep next to me at night. I also have a tabby cat and they’re besties!!!
I have a pure white trk angora, i agree
I was surprised not to see that breed suggested. They also are very friendly to other cats as well.
@R R I wish my agnora liked water 😫😫 he can’t stand it! Only likes the drink it ( obviously) but giving him a bath is a pain!
@R R They're the Turkish Van, another breed.
My mom got me a mixed siamese and I can definitely say she is a handful- I regret and also not regret getting her, because I heard she was from somewhere that didn’t really want her and was in a cage for long periods of time.
Yes i heard they tend to be x
How would you compare your Birman and your ragdoll? i have a ragdoll girl and i can't decide whether to get another ragdoll (boy) or a birman boy
@@salomel6805 Honestly pretty well. The only problem was that Cosmo was younger then Etoile. 2 ragdolls would get along together but would make it snow every day. But it really depends on the cats personality.

i just got a british shorthair without doing my resarch and didnt know they arent affectionate. still love my lil guy
I’m about to get my 1st kitten in a few weeks a British shorthair , which they sound perfect as they sound like they’re quite independent
British shorthair cats are my favorite cat breed! I would love to adopt one :)
i want to bring a ragdoll cat and i havent owened a cat before.is that ok?
He's so lovely and the only bad thing about him is that he needs to be brushed a lot and is very needy (not a problem since Im always available to hug him)
Orange gotta be one of my favorite breeds
😂 I agree
My first cat is a siamese cat shes amazing and i just got a lynx point kitten. Im hoping he helps with that potential seperation anxiety
I'm so happy you mentioned British Shorthairs and Birmans because I really love them, and they are good for people who haven't had cats before - like me 😀
I really enjoy this channel!
99.9% of cats out there are mixed breed mutts. They are consistently the healthiest, smartest cats, and shelters are full of them. Save a life, and adopt the best of all breeds in one mash-up great cat!
I adopted a 6 month old alley cat and she is the neediest baby ever... It's ok though I love her.
Yep thats true, I have a Russian Blue and oh boy he is soo demanding when it comes to food.
honestly all cats can be great breeds, each cat has their own personality. i have 3 cats, all different breeds, tho they all fit under the domestic shorthair. and they all have wildly different personalities.
1. a 6 year old male tuxedo, he loves to be picked up even tho he's a bit of a cow. loves being petted.
2. 5 year old domestic short hair common breed, elune she does not like being picked up, she will tolerate it for a few seconds, but she will claw your eyes out if you hold her to long. and is a little weary of people.
Never get a ragdoll. He'll steal your heart.
"Ragdolls are laid back" I think mine should watch this video
Mine is
My best friend had a creamy white Persian named Azzie.
(as she has both Aspergers and Bi polar.)
My auntie and uncle's feral tuxedo short haired cat Miles was such a pain in the ass when he was young..
I love Tonks! (Tonkinese) I had two and my parents have one now and all have been amazing kitties.
What is your opinion on the Devon Rex?
For a first cat? Looks like they are essentially the same cat as the domestic shorthair but with even shorter hair and it looks like people recommend it be indoor only. If that’s the case their personalities are usually cool but like any cat they have their own individual personality. I noticed the female cats almost seem smarter, or at least more calculated then males and males are usually really playful and energetic.
For a first cat I would definitely go for a cat outside the kitten stage, their personalities develop and can accurately suit you better.
My male russian blue is awesome and clingy and my two black females are really sweet and independent.
Thinking about a Norwegian Forest kitten as a companion for my Norwegian Elkhound. Looking for a mouser because I've seen a Norway rat in my pantry.
Most of all - get a rescue cat.
Yes definitely 💕
are they prone to any disease
ty for the cat video : ) great job on this and , i like how u tell each type and how each are
I have a Male blueish grey coat Maine coon and I am a first time owner for my newly arrived cat. It's hard to pet them but I'll try
First time cat parent of a gorgeous Siamese. She’s all pluses ☺️
i got my burmese as a second cat... his previous owners gave him away after just two weeks because they noticed he was sad and always crying because they didmt have a second cat and couldnt provide him enough attention.
She was with us almost 16 years
Was thinking of getting a Sesame, doe im very busy. So maybe not the right choice for me
What you said with the Siamese is very correct.
I recommend a cat from a shelter! They are beautiful and loving! Why would anyone need a specific breed?
Is this a joke becouse you get all cats from the shelter
@@meawmewtime174 no some people travel to buy a specific breed
Allergies are the only reason you need a specific breed
Did you watch the video?
because you know what you're gonna live with.
I have a Bengal female.
Gorgeous cat, affectionate but demanding.
Not for a first time cat owner.
