Overall very respectable list. I especially like seeing Fusion getting the appreciation it deserves, it's one of the best. But for me, Prime is the best game in the series. Super Metroid is a very close 2nd.
Fusion is outstanding, with room to be improved if they remade it. A first-person Fusion remake would be fucking insane. A Dread-esque side-scrolling version with more freedom and less linearity would be equally great. Hi-Fi revamps of that soundtrack too? Yes please!

None of this "Metroid games are all supposed to be about exploration, therefore Fusion is inherently worse for being more linear" or "Federation Force is a chibi spin off and not like the mainline games, therefore it's bad". Hello man! Ive played a few like Fusion and Zero Mission , many many years after their release, ive watched playthrough of some, *but i own one special i consider top game for my DS in almost EVERY aspect, and that is Metroid Prime Hunters*
Regarding Samus's personality in Other M, I'd agree that it'd be great to see deeper in her character. I love her stoic, strong silent persona because it adds to the mystery of what's going through her head but I do appreciate the opportunities to see into her personality. That being said, the way Other M handled it was wayyyy off the mark. From bad and downright corny dialogue to questionable character choices. The big one that sticks in my craw, and many others I'm sure, is her reaction to Ridley. Now, if you read the comic that was released around the time of Zero Mission you'll know that when Samus first met Ridley she was a little girl and he had led a space pirate raid into her planet killing everyone including her father. He also tried to kill her but she was saved by her mother who took brunt of Ridley's attack, killing her in the process. After Ridley and the pirates left, Samus was picked up by the Chozo as the lone survivor in the burning wreckage that was once her home. Knowing that, I can imagine facing Ridley, even after the first encounter, would affect her emotionally and psychologically because of that trauma. When she sees him in Other M, she literally becomes paralyzed with fear and he whoops on here for a bit while she's too traumatized to even fight back. I wouldn't feel so strongly about this if this wasn't her 5TH TIME FIGHTING THIS DRAGON. The game takes place after Super so that means she's already faced off against him at least 4 other times and has proven that she can stomp his ass anytime anywhere. So it makes NO sense why she'd suddenly be so triggered after she's already had a badass Gandalf Vs Balrog style smack down falling down a giant tunnel in just ONE encounter. It just didn't make a damn lick of sense. Anyone arguing that this was good character writing needs to speak to a professional. A professional what, I don't know, but a professional none the less.
Well, I agree on the surface but Link is intentionally left without personality. He’s meant to be a self-insert, i.e. literally the “link” from the player to the game. Samus at least has a few of her own characteristics that set her apart from other sci fi games
I don't dislike Other M as much as other people do, it's probably my second favourite Metroid game behind Fusion. I think that what I appreciate most about Other M is it's attempt to drastically improve the scope of the Metroid series primarily through it's side characters and in-game interactions. While I myself appreciate the solitary quality of most other Metroid games, a lot of the time I find that I lose investment in them after a certain point because of the lack of individual unique viewpoints or shifts on the narrative pace of the story being told. Prime 1 is an amazing game, but for all of its positive qualities it's actually quite aimless even up to the very end. Say what you will about Prime 2, but it at the very least it had Dark Samus as an ever present threat and tormenter to keep things engaging and Prime 3 had a whole slew of unique and fully voiced characters to spend time with and learn about. Prime 1 mostly follows the same barebones plot and doesn't really deviate from it at all, even in the Scan Visor logs. Most of the lore material present consists of second hand accounts of events from either Samus herself or other character's that have long since died or left the planet. There isn't any alternative viewpoints, no real moral ambiguity and there isn't even a tormenter to serve as a hurdle to overcome. It's all very formulaic and a bit uninteresting. It's hard to ground yourself into the world of a game when not only is your protagonist silent, but they don't have another character to play off of, to speak for them or to be an ever-present threat to torment them. Halo 1 wouldn't be the same without Cortana, The Legend of Zelda wouldn't be the same without the companion characters and the list goes on. Samus _NEEDS_ characters to play off of and provide breaks to the solidarity of the game's world and atmosphere or the game becomes stale and at times boring. Fusion does this the best in my opinion, and as a result the story (while small in scale) manages to be large in scope as you are always engaged with the ever changing and ever evolving story being presented to you. Other M's story doesn't always hit the right notes, but it frequently keeps you engaged with the story being told and goes a long way in allowing the series to broaden its scope through story tidbits and alternative motivations and viewpoints into the universe of Metroid (plus the gameplay isn't half bad either).
Yeah - I'm trying to stay objective to an extent. I don't want to be clouded by nostalgia. To say Fusion is better than Super just seems illogical at the end of the day. I just wish I got to play it when I was younger
I generally agree with you on a lot of this, even the criticism of the older games. I grew up with Fusion and Prime first as well. But I cannot empathize with your MP3 placement. It is the pinnacle of a trilogy, an epic planet-hopping climax tying together the first two games on a scale never before seen in a Metroid game. The aiming system and motion controls - while persistent - might be the best the Wii has to offer. The score is suitable for the galaxy-spanning setting, and the characters and lore come to the table broader and deeper than ever before. It outclasses Prime 2, and sits right next to Prime 1 as a perfect game.
For me well, prime 3 was the First Metroid Game i played in my life and yeah the controls and history are great and... Have Dark Samus but i think prime 1 it's better. I don't know why, but prime 1 looks a Lot more like a "Metroid Game" (for me) But being honest, i think My favourite Metroid Game its going to be Dread, the History it's so good, the E.m.m.i's, the controls, eveything it's damn, really good. The boss figth are extremely memorable and fun to play. The new power ups are very unique and cool to use.
Metroid Other M is not a bad game. I think the writing is very messy and lowkey kinda shat on Samus as a character, but the gameplay can get REALLY fun in certain spots. However as a whole, the gameplay is also a mess because of the changing from third person to first person. The controls were designed to be simplistic, but making it overly-simplistic ironically made everything more complicated. Overall I rate it a 6/10
Great question. I realized judging it by PvP was a little unfair. It's still SS tier in PvP, but in order to compare elements that all games share, I ended up trimming the PvP component away.

You explained very nicely why I love the movement in Super Metroid. It has a degree of mechanical depth and complexity that at first can feel quite clunky but it gets more and more fun when you learn the nuances and master it. I don't think any of the other 2d Metroid games have that kind of depth to the movement but they're obviously a lot easier to get used to and grasp right off the bat. Still hate cycling through all the weapons though lol.
I honestly agree with your thoughts on Other M. I think there were a lot of really good ideas there, that unfortunately all clashed with one another and generally weren't handled well. But the basic idea of trying to explore Samus's character in greater depth isn't inherently a bad one.
That was a really good video. Obviously I have my own list and don't agree with all your placements, but I completely understood your perspective for each game. You went into detail and justified each placement well.

Personally I disagree with SR being rated low but I can understand why. I think its better at combat than any other version of Metroid 2 but the other versions really shine in visual storytelling and atmosphere. I was surprised with Fed Force's ranking too. People hate on it a lot and while i haven't played it yet (it's on my list) it doesn't look that bad. It was just released at the wrong time when fans were hungry for mainline content, not spinoffs.

I’m surprised you enjoyed Federation Force Lone Wolf. I think the game really shines with more players. It’s really hard and slow solo, but I’m glad someone enjoyed it.
Makes sense, I probably did miss out on the best part of what the game offers, but I usually enjoy playing alone too and this was certainly the case here
Other M brings zero depth to the character. It is a terrible story. It is boring stupid and makes no sense. It was complete character assassination of Samus Aran. Plus the gameplay was awful. No exploration. Just running in dead linear corridors. Zero exploration. Stupid controls. It doesn’t exist. PS have played Metroid since 1989.

I dont know about anyone else, but i dont think super can be the best simply for the fact that you can get hardlocked and lose your save file if you dont find the charge beam and go to tourian. If you run out of missles... thats it. You are literally hardlocked and cant even go back as the door shuts and locks behind you.
Fusion is good but overated in my opinion. I replayed through it recently and it confirmed my thought. The story is better in Dread imo, it plays well that's for sure but the linearity and the text is just ... huh. I have trouble understanding why some people are mad at Zero Mission for puting a point of your map but not at Fusion for spewing lines and lines just to tell you where to go, sometimes even what you need to do to go there. Not only that, it's the fucking traps that are infuriating sometimes. Invisible blocks, sometimes breakable blocks that are hidden behind a sprite because the game knows that you took the habit to bomb the labyrinth to know the path, so now it'll have you scrub your ball onto each wall so you can find the hidden path !! Go kiss what appears to be void so the camera can move one block away and show you the hidden but mandatory path !! Go bomb that block that looks like anything else in that fucking trap you are, because that's fun !!! In my opinion, it's ... a little bit above average ? I still kinda like it because the gamefeel is good and the tension with SA:X is cool but besides that : very linear, the music is also pretty bad when it comes to Metroid standards honestly, the SA:X sections are very scripted so on your second playthrough you don't really care. Basically Dread and Super are just so much better, even Zero Mission tbh which, again after replaying it recently, destroys any complaint I had about Fusion (someone told me there was the « fake lava » thing .... there's a monster walking there, that's a hint. Fusion gives none of that)
I'm playing metroid for the first time and the game I started off with without knowing anything about the games is fusion. Is is absolutely amazing so far but I am stuck on some damned robot boss 😂
Glad to see fusion get love, most people i grew up around did not like the game as much as zero mission or prime, but i always had the opposite feel. All great games in their own right, but metroid fusion is just based af 😂

Prime 3 is so much better than people give it credit for. The criticisms are valid, to be sure, but there are also soooo many incredible points of the game, be it music, atmosphere, mechanics, locations etc. that by far outweigh the problems with it imo. I think it's definitely the weakest in the trilogy, but as the weakest in such a strong trilogy, it's still better than 90% of games out there. Just my opinion.
@proletariatbourgeoisie9929 I totally feel where you're coming from. A full replay of Prime 3 has been overdue for me for a while, so maybe that will change my mind. But to answer both your comments, the biggest thing to note is that the difference between the tiers closer to the top is pretty small. Also, FF was insanely fun to play and is likely the most underrated game of the series, despite being a spin off. So while the depth and much more interesting storyline is there for Prime 2, oddly enough, I could have a similar overall enjoyment when playing the two. I'm also not like, extremely married to anything here. The biggest thing I learned in actually trying to do a good job on this list was that it's basically impossible to "objectively" rank all these games. It's more of a thought exercise than hard facts.
I dont know what you mean about other m having 2D segments, the entire thing is in 3D even in the small corridors plus you can skip cutscenes on a second playthrough
Other m is painfully average at best. I think it had a lot of potential but some poor directing and cultural differences (plus some downright bad decisions) ruined it. Gameplay was fun for what it was, but the dodge button was way too easy to abuse and the asinine level design/level flow was extremely poor, and in a linear game like other m thats disastrous. Samus wasnt framed well at all. Because of cultural differences she spoke like a robot, but had ptsd from a foe she'd faced multiple times already. Despite them trying to paint her as a badass, they had her agency crippled by adam (who also had his entire character rewritten to be cold just to have him make a heroic sacrifice later that came off extremely badly) causing way more issues that could have been solved if samus just did her own thing like usual. Its a bad game at its worst and i think its at its worst for a majority of the game. The fanservice was cool at the end ofc, but that doesnt really make up for any of its shortcomings. As a fan who has played the game, im just upset it wasnt better when it had every opportunity to be
Y'all need to replay Fusion. I remembered it being incredible but after recently replaying it I can't stand how forced the story and gameplay feels. It forces you to go in one direction but manages to still hide the way forward? Also pinball is great.
the only thing i immediately dont like about this list is any sort of nestroid love LMAO. Once zm came out I genuinely think nestroid became like a bottom 3 game. It has NOTHING of value nowadays besides nostalgia bait. ZM CLEARS it in every regard
I think Metroid 1 can still be fun on its own. I boot it up from time to time and play around because the engine is enjoyable to play around in. Of course ZM is better, but I don't think Metroid 1 is 100% obsolete, moreso just like 96% lol

@thuperr2017 Thanks! I recently played through the original Castlevania games, which I had never done before. I had never played any of the series actually and it was way overdue. I loved them so much, despite them being for NES. Playing the SNES felt like an improvement for sure, but I am still excited about playing the older ones as well. It's not exclusively nostalgia, I think there's some other factors at play that make the old games fun still

Personally I disagree with SR being rated low but I can understand why. I think its better at combat than any other version of Metroid 2 but the other versions really shine in visual storytelling and atmosphere.
I was surprised with Fed Force's ranking too. People hate on it a lot and while i haven't played it yet (it's on my list) it doesn't look that bad. It was just released at the wrong time when fans were hungry for mainline content, not spinoffs.
Its basically a preferences on ur Top 5 cause i completely agree too. Play whichever. Hard to argue ur points cause I agree. I choose Prime and Dread with Fusion and Super right behind cause those damn wall jumps in Super suck 😂
Im really grateful that my dad had fusion on the gameboy advance and let me play it. i have spend hundreds of hours playing that game and i 100% agree with everything you put on the tier list. W moment
People who didn’t experience Metroid for the first time when it was originally released are missing out on how great it was. It is hard to play now.

I’m surprised you enjoyed Federation Force Lone Wolf. I think the game really shines with more players. It’s really hard and slow solo, but I’m glad someone enjoyed it.
Makes sense, I probably did miss out on the best part of what the game offers, but I usually enjoy playing alone too and this was certainly the case here
Other M brings zero depth to the character. It is a terrible story. It is boring stupid and makes no sense. It was complete character assassination of Samus Aran.
Plus the gameplay was awful. No exploration. Just running in dead linear corridors. Zero exploration. Stupid controls.

I dont know about anyone else, but i dont think super can be the best simply for the fact that you can get hardlocked and lose your save file if you dont find the charge beam and go to tourian. If you run out of missles... thats it. You are literally hardlocked and cant even go back as the door shuts and locks behind you.

Agreed, I think Prime Pinball is awesome, not necessarily compared with the other hours long Metroid games but it's a fun time as a pinball game

Fusion is good but overated in my opinion. I replayed through it recently and it confirmed my thought. The story is better in Dread imo, it plays well that's for sure but the linearity and the text is just ... huh. I have trouble understanding why some people are mad at Zero Mission for puting a point of your map but not at Fusion for spewing lines and lines just to tell you where to go, sometimes even what you need to do to go there.
Not only that, it's the fucking traps that are infuriating sometimes. Invisible blocks, sometimes breakable blocks that are hidden behind a sprite because the game knows that you took the habit to bomb the labyrinth to know the path, so now it'll have you scrub your ball onto each wall so you can find the hidden path !! Go kiss what appears to be void so the camera can move one block away and show you the hidden but mandatory path !! Go bomb that block that looks like anything else in that fucking trap you are, because that's fun !!!
In my opinion, it's ... a little bit above average ? I still kinda like it because the gamefeel is good and the tension with SA:X is cool but besides that : very linear, the music is also pretty bad when it comes to Metroid standards honestly, the SA:X sections are very scripted so on your second playthrough you don't really care.
Basically Dread and Super are just so much better, even Zero Mission tbh which, again after replaying it recently, destroys any complaint I had about Fusion (someone told me there was the « fake lava » thing .... there's a monster walking there, that's a hint. Fusion gives none of that)

I'm playing metroid for the first time and the game I started off with without knowing anything about the games is fusion. Is is absolutely amazing so far but I am stuck on some damned robot boss 😂
Glad to see fusion get love, most people i grew up around did not like the game as much as zero mission or prime, but i always had the opposite feel. All great games in their own right, but metroid fusion is just based af 😂
I'm curious, did you start the series with Fusion like I did? I think we might just be really biased because it was an early or first Metroid game for us
@@Doeboy I started with super metroid when I was quite young, I didn't know about fusion until at least 2006. Became my favorite immediately with the story and atmosphere
@williambudrow9508 ah okay, interesting. Usually the Super -> Fusion pipeline doesn't go well because the mechanics are so much less dynamic and fun. I agree that the story and atmosphere are what make Fusion good, possibly only matched by Dread now
@Doeboy the sa-x scenes still give me pause when I play fusion, whereas the EMI just seem like speedbumps now. It's those damn footsteps... still gets me every time

Prime 3 is so much better than people give it credit for. The criticisms are valid, to be sure, but there are also soooo many incredible points of the game, be it music, atmosphere, mechanics, locations etc. that by far outweigh the problems with it imo. I think it's definitely the weakest in the trilogy, but as the weakest in such a strong trilogy, it's still better than 90% of games out there. Just my opinion.
Also, I'm a little mad that Federation Force is in the same tier as Prime 2. That hurts my feelings a little bit LOL
@proletariatbourgeoisie9929 I totally feel where you're coming from. A full replay of Prime 3 has been overdue for me for a while, so maybe that will change my mind. But to answer both your comments, the biggest thing to note is that the difference between the tiers closer to the top is pretty small.
Also, FF was insanely fun to play and is likely the most underrated game of the series, despite being a spin off. So while the depth and much more interesting storyline is there for Prime 2, oddly enough, I could have a similar overall enjoyment when playing the two.
I'm also not like, extremely married to anything here. The biggest thing I learned in actually trying to do a good job on this list was that it's basically impossible to "objectively" rank all these games. It's more of a thought exercise than hard facts.
I dont know what you mean about other m having 2D segments, the entire thing is in 3D even in the small corridors plus you can skip cutscenes on a second playthrough
It's 2.5D, sure, but elements are 2D. This is the gameplay style, not the graphics, that I am referring to.

Top 3 super Metroid , zero mission , fusion
Other m is painfully average at best. I think it had a lot of potential but some poor directing and cultural differences (plus some downright bad decisions) ruined it. Gameplay was fun for what it was, but the dodge button was way too easy to abuse and the asinine level design/level flow was extremely poor, and in a linear game like other m thats disastrous. Samus wasnt framed well at all. Because of cultural differences she spoke like a robot, but had ptsd from a foe she'd faced multiple times already. Despite them trying to paint her as a badass, they had her agency crippled by adam (who also had his entire character rewritten to be cold just to have him make a heroic sacrifice later that came off extremely badly) causing way more issues that could have been solved if samus just did her own thing like usual. Its a bad game at its worst and i think its at its worst for a majority of the game. The fanservice was cool at the end ofc, but that doesnt really make up for any of its shortcomings. As a fan who has played the game, im just upset it wasnt better when it had every opportunity to be
Y'all need to replay Fusion. I remembered it being incredible but after recently replaying it I can't stand how forced the story and gameplay feels. It forces you to go in one direction but manages to still hide the way forward?
Also pinball is great.

the only thing i immediately dont like about this list is any sort of nestroid love LMAO. Once zm came out I genuinely think nestroid became like a bottom 3 game. It has NOTHING of value nowadays besides nostalgia bait. ZM CLEARS it in every regard
I think Metroid 1 can still be fun on its own. I boot it up from time to time and play around because the engine is enjoyable to play around in. Of course ZM is better, but I don't think Metroid 1 is 100% obsolete, moreso just like 96% lol

I recently played through the original Castlevania games, which I had never done before. I had never played any of the series actually and it was way overdue.
I loved them so much, despite them being for NES. Playing the SNES felt like an improvement for sure, but I am still excited about playing the older ones as well. It's not exclusively nostalgia, I think there's some other factors at play that make the old games fun still

Super Metroid is woefully overrated. It's a good game Don't get me wrong, But I think nostalgia dictates the high rating for that game for most lists... It's A tier or at the WORST high B
