My favorite always will have to be sonic adventure 2 battle my aunt gave me a gamecube she did not use anymore and when I found out it came with SA2 I flipped
Oh man, I thought you were going to put Sonic Unleashed on a bad tier but when it appeared on the S-tier, I was like "YES! THIS GAME DESERVES IT!" Nice tier list man, I love Sonic Unleashed
It's even heavily implied Black Knight takes place immediately after Unleashed with Sonic having two chilldogs when he gets isekai'ed into Camelot (He did plan on hanging out with Amy in Unleashed). The only reason I didn't include them in my list is because it's been years since I've played the storybook games, so I don't feel comfortable giving an informed ranking (I used to love Generations 3DS but after recently replaying it, let's just say DiMPs weren't at their "A" game).
Ranking EVERY Mainline Sonic Game! 0:56 Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (2014) 3:17 Sonic Forces (2017) 8:31 Sonic Heroes (2003) 11:12 Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) 14:20 Sonic CD (1993) 16:13 Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) 17:26 Sonic Lost World (2013) 20:24 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) 22:38 Sonic Generations (2011) 25:01 Sonic Colors (2010) 26:56 Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) 29:16 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) 32:03 Sonic Mania (2017) 34:21 Sonic Adventure (1998) 37:57 Sonic Unleashed (2008)
I adored sonic heroes when I was a kid. I know my love for it is just because of nostalgia. I have always thought about replaying it as an adult, but I know it’ll probably hurt my memory of it. Crazy how we look past so many issues with games when we’re kids.
if you can get an original copy of it i’d go for it (or if ur just really good with emulators), i just paired an xbox one controller to my pc through a dolphin emulator with a copy of the game i got on pc, and mapping the controls got funky for some reason and like every few minutes it would go from full screen to a small bordered window and pause the game, idk. i would shoot for a console copy if i were gonna replay it again, but for some reason shadow the hedgehog worked a lot better on my pc and was still pretty fun to play
Sonic Unleashed deserves so much more recognition for it's aesthetic. I never hated the concept of Sonic in the human world, but I couldn't stand the semi anime realism of the human's art style; it looked so, SO awkward to see them stand next to Sonic characters. Seeing Sonic run around a world full of humans that are just as cartoony as him is so satisfying, as well as charming. That game also had the best tone for me. It was light hearted and corny, but allowed itself to be dark enough for the threat to be taken seriously.
As an og Sonic Unleashed fan back when everyone thought it was one of the games that absolutely ruined the franchise, it feels very good to finally see it justified for the incredible gem it is. Best story and music by far its not debatable.
I’m someone who played the Wii version when I was 10 and I got super bored because the night levels were awful. I’m taking a look at the 360 version for the first time as a Sonic Colors lover, and I’ve gotta say while Sonic Unleashed’s lows were definitely lower than the lows of Sonic Colors, it’s highs were much higher.
I still look back at Sonic Unleashed just to see gorgeous the game is. It was really ahead of its time graphics wise, compared to the games that released the same year.
@@lucasmendes3219 Definatelly but for what it did alone having the best story, soundtrack, world building, tone and daytime gameplay is something most sonic games can't pull off. Some do but only in 1 or 2 aspects.
What’s funny is the theme isn’t even a bad song it’s just so interruptive of the calming night music. That and like when you find one small dude to use for a puzzle and it starts playing again
If we're keeping it 100, it's because there was a significant amount of time that has passed since it was released on the Wii, and thus a significant amount of time since some have played it (either because they don't want to bother using the Wii, or they don't have the wii or game anymore). Honestly, no one has ever really hated colors (except for it's undeniably horrid dialogue), it was only consider underrated in light of how much worse ultimate was by comparison. The reason fans have started considering it underrated, is because they found themselves comparing to a direct comparison in Unleashed, and it always seemed to come up short by comparison, even though Unleashed clearly had many more haters than Colors, a product that objectively gave less in terms of quality and quantity.
It’s nice to see other people appreciate Sonic Adventure 1. It’s close to being my favourite Sonic game next to Generations. Mania is awesome too but I suck ass at Classic Sonic games.
I don't like classic Sonic gameplay because you're supposed to make so many decisions while your camera shows you so little. How am I supposed to choose one of several paths when I see non of them? How am I supposed to know when to jump while I run on supersonic speed and can only see a few steps ahead of me? Modern Sonic doesn't have these issues. I grew up playing Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes and will always cherish them.
@@Raykon333 There are Christian Whitehead ports of Sonic with widescreen support and extended camera, i always choose Sonic 3 AIR over the original Sonic 3&K.
I’m so glad there are others who love sonic unleashed just as much as I do! TBH sometimes there were moments (when I played the game) that made me think that the werehog has better gameplay than the normal sonic that we’re used to. Literally, the only downside to the game (for me) was the camera angle sometimes and the fact that I WANT MORE! Even though it seems unlikely or near impossible that we’ll get more from unleashed, I hope that there will be another sonic unleashed game…
I agree sonic unleashed is my favourite sonic game ever despite some small issues. I would love to see a sonic unleashed 2. If it were real I would buy the game on launch day (unless if it’s bad like forces).
I actually found Shadow the Hedgehog to be a better experience than Heroes. Controls felt less slippery and guns really helped out with bullet sponge enemies.
I enjoyed the story of shadow the hedgehog alot. while sonic is obvs not the main character of this game, it's still a sonic game. so I'm surprised it wasn't included among the ranking list
Shadow the Hedgehog was kinda bad for the time, but it definitely wasn't terrible and didn't really deserve all the hate it got. I just wish the game took itself seriously and went for that Teen rating. Woulda made SO MANY voicelines less cringey and more palatable.
I LOVE Sonic Unleashed, it’s my favorite game EVER, every time I hear endless possibilities, I tear up, because it reminds me of the good times I’ve had with this game since I was a kid, I absolutely love it.
Sonic Heroes is a great game yes it has its flaws but it’s ideas music level design and gameplay style is great if sonic heroes didn’t have its issues with the controls it would be great. The fact you can play with every character and team is awesome they all mostly play the same but let’s say they expanded on that gameplay style in a sequel. Having a tiny story with all the character teams is a fun ride and metal sonic as the actual final boss is so epic . Sonic lost world and sonic 06 being over it is a huge disrespect to sonic heroes frfr sonic heroes is at least B tier on my tier list. Heroes has way better characterizations and story compared to lost world and heroes plays way better than 06 lol
IKR people either say the game is either OK or bad, me? I love Sonic Heroes, it's my 2nd favorite 3d Sonic game. I also have a soft spot for Shadow the Hedgehog.
It's still feels rushed (I'm looking at you Rail Canyon), plus I'm not a fan of how this game feels way to kid-friendly compared to the other sonic games. Playing all 4 teams to unlock the last story? Yeah no.
Sonic adventure 1 was my first sonic game and I'll never forget the memories I have with it. I love it. Thank you for appreciating it honestly, I hold it very dearly.
Sonic Adventure 1 was my all time favourite! Played hours on end on the Dreamcast. Very excited to see what Sonic Frontiers is giving us, hopefully a massive open world! 🤩
See I was one of those people who really liked 06, I ignored critics and went for it. Soundtrack great, I like the story oddly enough and how they managed to intertwine Sonic Shadow and Silver with no plot points unfinished. The cut scene where the three hedgehogs fly to go fight the final boss was sweet. The game needed more time to iron out the kinks and loading screens. And some of the side missions were impossible. But I really like joyed 06
I also like 06, but there is one major plot point that went entirely unfinished, and that's the last story. If Mephiles just could kill Sonic himself, why bother sending Silver back in time to do so? How does Mephiles even know about Sonic to begin with, considering they never meet in Sonic's story?
Beautiful video, I don’t know if it’s just me, but it’s rare for someone to actually speak so passionately about Sonic, and about the stories in particular. Loved the video!
my first game was sonic riders or colors but when i got sonic adventure 1 i fell in love number 2 i didnt really enjoy as much as 1 because of the knuckels and rouge gameplay i just hate those levels
As someone who grew up in the universe of Classic Sonic, I remember buying a Sega Dreamcast on 9/9/99. I bought three games with it (THREE!): Power Stone, Soul Calibur, and Sonic Adventure. And I think those three games represent the absolute best the Dreamcast has to offer.
Off topic, but I’m sorry: you can’t possibly tell me that Rise of Lyric is mainline, but Shadow the Hedgehog isn’t. It’s literally an Adventure-style game, but with Shadow as the main character. Also, shoutout to Vectorman. That game slaps!
Imo, if Shadow doesn't count because of its gimmicks, then Unleashed doesn't count either because of its gimmicks. I'm ready to challenge the entire community on that.
@@lpfan4491 I can respect that. The only thing dope about Unleashed was its story and tone the controls were hella tight on Unleashed and the werewolf stages slowed it down.
I kept waiting for him to mention Shadow and I was getting really curious as we got higher and higher. By the time we reached SA2, I thought, "Okay, it must not be here."
@@PsychicCatTCG Generations literally had the best 3D sonic levels in the boost gameplay. Beats being stuck in a hallway like Unleashed, Colors, and Forces imo.
@@PsychicCatTCG Oh you definitely didn’t play generations’ modern levels if you think that. They literally had multiple pathways almost everywhere. Especially in seaside hill.
@@PsychicCatTCG well how the tables have turned, considering gens modern sonic has some of the most open levels in the series (if you pretend the adventure games dont exist.)
I know this wasn’t about those “spin-off” games, but I was so curious to see what your take was on Sonic Riders. One of my favorite spin-off games in the entire sonic universe. Also Sonic Fighters. I used to go on vacation at this hotel and they had a little arcade near the pool. The amount of quarters I spent trying to beat the game in one sitting to get to metal Sonic at the end was insane. Absolutely loved it
One thing I liked about Unleashed was how much fun Sonic was having when he used his boost. It may not seem like much but I really like it and I hope they’ll go back to that
@@Invisibleboy999 HOW? There are plenty of reasons why I think SA2 is worse than SA1. 1. The mech stages are WORSE than Gamma's stages all because Eggman/Tails have clunky controls (honestly, Tails shouldn't have had a mech and it didn't make sense why he had one if he could FLY, his stages should've been like his SA1 stages, I'm saying that he should've been able to fly around in all of his SA2 stages). 2. The radar in Rouge/Knuckles' stages doesn't beep faster when you're close to a Master Emerald shard and it doesn't show more than one emerald shard (like the radar in SA1). 3. Sonic and Shadow's Spin Dash has input lag (they should've put the Spamdash in the game), the Somersault and Lightspeed Dash are mapped to the same button, their controls are kinda awkward (I said, kinda.. by the way). 4. The level design is narrow or linear and not as open as SA1's level design. And 5. The camera is AWFUL (I don't even need to say anything about this flaw, it's just awful). While SA2 is more stable (less buggy) and has a better story compared to SA1, I still prefer SA1 over SA2.

I actually like the BOOM designs, they match the characters personalities more. And Sonics blue arms are more flush with his body than the sudden peachy arms that were only there so you could see them in 2D.
I mean, same. I just don’t like Knuckle’s redesign. Other than that the other aren’t that bad. I do think they could’ve made Sonic’s redesign a bit better (mainly the 3d render)
Hope they change the design of the characters to something like that or the movie so that they can be more expressive which is one of the problems in the games and also knuckles hands are surprisingly big which hope had a change to something like the movie knuckles
I’m so glad you gave Sonic Unleashed some love!! I loved this game and other then some of the minor mechanics, I don’t understand the hate. I agree with almost everything you said. I would however put Sonic Adventure 2 at S tier because it was so evolutionary to 3D Sonic games, but it’s such a minor criticism. So I digress. Good work
@@rando6677 Then how do you explain the radar in Knuckles' stages and the DELAYED Spin Dash (it shouldn't take almost 1 second for Sonic to use his Spin Dash, he should start rolling immediately) in SA2?
@@coconutgun325 Stop living in 2008. Everyone can't shut the hell up about Unleashed these days and the person who made that review hasn't worked there for over a decade. Someone else made a review for it last year.
I never EVER thought I would find another human being who’s 2 favourite Sonic games were Unleashed and Adventure, resonated with every word said about both games, Adventure was my first ever gaming experience and Unleashed enhanced my reflexes and consistency with gaming. Great list!
me 2! sonic in general was my first real gaming experience, especially sonic adventures, sonic unleashed, and sonic adventures 2, i remember how all our siblings would have our own unique chao, and i remember when my older brother told me he knows a bug to make my chao extremely powerful, but i said no because i wanted him to get stronger naturally😭
I though I was crazy for liking 06' for a moment. It's literally Sonic Adventure level design. For me it is perfect design philosophy for Sonic, a mix between 1 little openess and 2 more spectacular side (06 still is not the perfect example of that design, but it really is close to perfection). If they didn't had to rush the game at the time it could've been a great game. Story still may have suck anyway, but it was something new and more mature. Levels and such are really fun beside the technical faults. It's also fun to break the game.
I'm so happy to see love for sonic unleashed :) it was an outstanding game way ahead of its time, and the werehog is actually really fun if you keep an open mind and get into it. I totally agree with your tier list, great job, as soon as I saw this vid, I said to myself, this channel deserves a sub 👏
I like your tier list, it's pretty accurate, and I understand we're all going to have slightly different opinions on this. In my mind the most amazing sonic game was sonic adventures 2 BATTLE (the version that had 2 player vs mode racing in it) followed by sonic adventures 1. I just thought adventures 2 was a little bit more polished and had a few less glitches. The game also had a lot more replayability for me because I would frequently play it to race my friends for a good several years afterward. Almost all the levels in both games were so iconic to me, and I can't help but get a little crazed when people comment that the best sonic games were the side scrolling 2d games. No. The sonic adventure games were true marvels. 3rd I'm placing generations simply because that game was straight and to the point. You want to just run thru classic revamped levels in both old and new sonic styles with a miniscule storyline to slow you down? Here you go lol. My one gripe with generations is that I really thought they stumbled onto a great formula and believe they missed out on a dlc or sequel opportunity to add significantly more classic maps that many people probably wanted to see brought back and polished up. I still wish they would come out with a sonic generations 2 lol.
If you’re already trying 06 on Xenia, just go check out Project 06. Its made me really start to enjoy the aspects of the game that were really done well but hidden behind the glitchiness
@@SilverSpireZ I’ve played project 06, it’s more polished and looks better but I have some big problems with it that make it less enjoyable. Silver and Sonic don’t turn and control as well as regular 06, and I find myself messing up in some stages (note: I played Project 06 before 06 so it’s not a bias thing). P06 however does make snow boarding and mach speed sections playable now which is amazing. Tails and Knuckles control better in P06 too
idc how repetitive the gameplay is I can't help but LOVE sonic heroes. The soundtrack, THE LEVEL DESING (I've learned to love the levels i struggled with the most), the whole playing with 3 characters in one level, i feel it's incredible.
I love it!!!Sonic forces is my all time favorite sonic game and the soundtrack got me dancing and the levels got jumpin with the stress of beating the boss. I love the characters, the difficulty and the creativity!!!
I agree for the most part. With Unleashed, the biggest flaw was the medals. Take it out. Now if the warehog games were more arcade like, it'd be perfect. SEGA can make good beat'em ups. Golden Axe and Streets of Rage are evident of this. If the warehog stages were more like that, I'd call the game a must, even for casual gamers. Still my favorite game.
Sonic unleashed is so amazing, I loved the game as a kid and still love the game, the soundtrack was amazing plus eggman was in his prime in this game, he had his funny moments but at the same time he was the most serious in this game out of all the sonic games, tbh it was nice to see eggman truly filling his role as a serious villain and proving how much of a master mind he really was, like in this game he managed to capture super sonic and drain him of his powers. No other version of eggman has ever done that. As well as he wasn’t just trying to keep sonic out of his was like normally, this time he was truly trying to kill him. Idk seeing eggman in this game fully sold me.
11:14 I knew this game had potential, the problem is 06 was an unfinished game, if the release date was pushed or if they began earlier that year it would have been a good sonic game
Rise of Lyric failed primarily because they were told "yeah this is gonna be a wii-u exclusive" about halfway through development, meaning they had to start all over again, and because of time constraints they weren't able to get it finished in time. If the game was allowed to be made as big red button wanted from the very beginning, it's likely it wouldn't have failed
I actually like Lost World despite some of the common criticisms. What would've made more sense would be if Lost World was a 3D Classic game. Think about it, the simple story, the cartoony aesthetics, elements from the classic games such as the way the robots are designed, the main problem I have is that this is all strung together and classified as a Modern Sonic game. Lost World as a classic Sonic game would make the most sense and it would probably be the first proper 3D Classic Sonic game.
I feel the same way about colors as well, it's not just them being a lot like Mario, but they just don't feel like a modern sonic game. Colors is 2d like classic Sonic and the few times it is 3d can be chalked up to the equivalent of special stages in classic Sonic, with difference being the ones in colors aren't optional, because they need to check that 3d modern Sonic box.
@@thaneros the classic games stories weren't meta era simple they were just more show don't tell kinda stories the stories explained better in the manuals.
@@jdawson7877 Its not just the stories but visually as well. In the classics, badniks had a very robotic animation to them on purpose. Meta era badniks are overly animated... Why? Or like how zones like Sweet Mountain or Dessert Ruins would never been in classic games as the aesthetics do not fit in the world of Sonic pre Meta era.
As a long time sonic fan, I actually love the Sonic Boom look. The character proportions look great and they all have much more personality built into their look and expressions. Imo Sonic fans need to be more open to changes to Sonic. People geniunely get mad when sonic's quills get slightly shorter or his blue is a shade lighter.
I used to not care about Stories in games because I don't focus on them, but now I really miss the story of Sonic Unleashed, its tone. I like Sonic Colors, but now I realize how funny it looks compared to Sonic Unleashed. The latest Sonic Games have given us Candylands, renamed Green Hill Zones, and Casinos in Jungles. While Sonic Unleashed has shown us several countries from the real world with amazing music on the background that just fits. At least Sonic Frontiers looks like something new.
For m I'd rather have Gens no story then Colors bad cringey story, at least Generations makes up for it because I enjoy how fast it is and how creative the trials are. I can't find a single cripe about Gens aside from its no story and bad boss fight. While Colors story is bad and we have barely any 3d, and with wisp that make sonic that either cheapen Sonic or slow him down like laser=cheap and hover=slow.
I'm like 60 - 70% in agreement with this list: - I think SA2 is better than SA but marginally - Sonic CD is much higher in my opinion, one of the best classic sonic soundtracks by far - Heroes would also be a little higher for me but definitely agree with the repetitive level design - Lost World, 06 & Rise of Lyric all would've been in dead last for me All in all, i really enjoyed this trip down memory lane and think about ranking these myself, great video!
I'm actually replaying Sonic Heroes right now, I remember loving this game so much back when I was a kid, I would go round my cousin's house because she had an original xbox with it. I just loved it so much, the level design is pretty good and the gameplay is fun, playing it back I agree it does feel clunky at times but overall it definitely holds up pretty well considering the time it was made. I was relatively young playing Sonic 06 but it was my first game on Xbox 360 and I remember it being fantastic and completely disregarding every bug and glitch, it would be actually really fun without the game breaking issues. But I think my favourite is probably Sonic Unleashed, granted I haven't touched it in a very long time but god damn that game was good, I played it through countless times and enjoyed it every run, I just think the night stages were a bit meh at times is my only complaint. Haven't really played any of the modern Sonic stuff :(
9:34 There’s more of a timing to it than automatic. Look at sonic’s cooldown on the homing attack. It’s simple to find out and makes it more manageable to see how it works. 9:53 Also you shall not press the b button during you switch rails or you die.

It was cool to see someone rank Sonic 006 higher then usual. Like I understand the game isn’t great but half the people who judge the game only talk about the bugs the game has and that’s it. It was cool to see someone grab a take on the hubs and the level design
25:35 my main problem with sonic colors aside from the story is that it relies way too much on 2d sections and the terrain in those sections is super blocky and boring if it had more 3d platforming and more creative terrain in those sections I would’ve enjoyed it much more also whoever thought having that yellow spring auto scroll section deserves to get fired
Even with problems in mind, it’s still an easy a tier. For me it would be more like an s. The 2d sections are fun at times, although I definitely prefer the 3-d sections. But still the worlds are so interesting, and the power up’s you get with the wisps are pretty fun to use. Not to mention I played it when I was very little, so there is a nostalgia factor. Also story is ok. I mean, I never found the story to be a big factor in any of the sonic games, since the gameplay usually more than makes up for it. Great game. Wish I had my original Wii copy. Ultimate is playable, but you simply just don’t get the same experience playing a port than you would playing the original.
@ I played it when I was little as well but I still preferred generations over it the worlds are nice but I think the level design is still kinda mediocre compared to unleashed or generations
@@sometf2player752 yeah. I understand that. Hell, I played generations quite a bit more as well when I was little. But colors is such a charming little game, with so many cool ideas that I think it’s still one of the absolute best sonic games.

My absolute all time favorite sonic game is Sonic Unleashed and to see someone else have such a good take on my favorite game... best video I've ever seen, and you deserve all the subs friend!!
The Mario parallels was one of the biggest gripes I had with Sonic Lost World. Throughout the first couple levels I had this nagging feeling of familiarity that reminded me of the Super Mario Galaxy games in particular. I asked myself "What changes if I replace Sonic with Mario here?" and the answer I came to was nothing much. It felt like "Super Mario Galaxy but with a fast-forward button". Also those comparisons became even clearer when I played the Wii U Yoshi's Island DLC level.
@@ssseee3ds463 It's the visuals mostly. Most the levels remind me of Super Mario Galaxy. They very rarely felt like a Sonic level to me. I could see alot of LW levels making into SMG 3 which isn't something I can usually say about Sonic levels.
@@Dr.Deluxe The visual look more Classic Sonic-ishe to me, Also SLW levels making into SMG3 just because the gravitationnal-thing is kinda dumb (The 2D section tho are kinda mid so i can agree with that)
@@Dr.Deluxe The level themes are ripped straight out of New Super Mario Bros in particular, and you're doing a lot of standard platforming that can be done with the movement of several other platforming characters. The game would've been more interesting and unique if they had their own level themes and designed every stage around utilizing the Parkour system.
I don't know if it was on here or not, but Shadow the Hedgehog was the dopest sonic game, as a kid I loved that game it was nuts and awesome! Also shootouts to sonic riders too, those 2 games were godlike as well.
Glad to see Sonic 06 is getting some sort of recognition. Hell if they actually took the time to finish it and not rush the game, it might've been the greatest Sonic game of all time. It has some of the best soundtracks. The story took a few dark turns with Mephiles straight up killing Sonic. Every character and level is something new and it's cool to see different gameplay mechanics to work with (even if they don't work have the time lmao) but Sonic 06 has a place in my heart. I kind of want to go replay it.
My favorite is probably Sonic Adventure 2. I love the music the most out of any of the games. It made me a huge Shadow the Hedgehog fan. (Though sadly they haven't really captured him in a good light since imo.) Sonic and Shadow levels are a blast. Knuckles has some fun music while you search for...and probably get frustrated trying to find the pieces of the Emeralds. And Eggman and Tails levels kind of sucked if I'm being honest. But they were just boring and not too hard to get through. Overall I loved it. Sonic Adventure 1 is probably right after it. Other than classic Sonic games however, I couldn't really get into any of the more modern Sonic games. I don't know why.
I was scratching my head about including Boom on the list. But then I thought about how Shadow is technically more fitting for the list since it continued Shadow's story from SA2 and Heroes. Just felt kinda odd being left out to me.
I love Sonic and the Secret rings. A bit overly tough in some areas for no reason but a great game never the less. The ost is an absolute banger and the story is amazing in my opinion
I feel like 06 would ironically do well on that list plus you actually have to really think to find even "meh" let alone "bad" Sonic music (Especially in the mainline games).
@@lynxfresh5214 Sonic Chronicles is literally the only Sonic game with a terrible OST... But it does at least have one decent song and it's the intro. My own personal top ranking will be SA1 and CD, you?
@@Supermariorpg6 Either CD (JP track) or Rush for me (follow very closely by Heroes). Everything about Chronicles is just an "oof"; The game was rushed, apparently Bioware lost the soundtrack just before release meaning they had to resort to midi in order to meet the deadline, Ken Penders then sued killing any attempt of a sequel and the cherry on top being Ian Flynn confirming the game as non-canon in the new Sonic lore/art book. I still believe the Sonic franchise has massive untapped potential for RPGs plus Sega are RPG experts themselves with the Phantasy Star games.
@@lynxfresh5214Wait, really? That totally explains everything about that game's OST now... They should release demos of how the original tracks were supposed to be. It's ashamed too as Chronicles had a lot of potential story wise and seeing it just abandoned like that, it's pretty sad... It kind of deserved a follow-up after that cliff hanger. All because of a lawsuit from a total creep, disgusting. Dude just imagine Atlus developing a Persona 5 inspired Sonic game, I'll love that.
@@Supermariorpg6 Between Sega's own expertise and Atlus' track record, a Sonic RPG should be a no brainer but unfortunately that isn't the case. sonic unleashed is the absolute best game of sonic and there is nothing that proves it wrong, look man 15+ years later and this banger is still the best looking, best humor and it all of the care put in all of the stages is just beautiful

@@roilo8560 For me, Sonic Mania's gameplay is better, but that's almost solely due to the fact that it's 23 years newer than 3&K. The story in 3&K is arguably the best in the series, rivaling Unleashed and SA2, and the game as a whole is one of the best in the 16-bit era and in history.

I really love every sonic game. I played Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure A LOT when I was a kid. I even kept replaying the two games and never got bored. But Sonic Unleash, that game shows what exactly Sonic game is. The graphics are insanely beautiful, the stages are long and fun (I love long stages), and I just loved it. I've heard some people didn't like that game because of the lack of controls. Honestly, they're not THAT terrible. I do get that the drifting was not great so as did the stomp. But you just need to get used to it. Once you get used to how to drift and stomp in this game, you will fully enjoy it. And honestly, I'm mad that Sonic Unleash is not PS4. I really wanna play this game again. But anywho, great video and great opinion. Respect 👌
2:25 I'll admit Sonic doesn't look the best in this design but he's at least relatable. 4:11 Also let's not gloss over the fact that Chaos and Shadow weren't even bosses. Chaos could have been a boss where you play as Tails as he's more than capable of taking on Chaos 0 if he's taken down Chaos 4 before, and there could have been a fight between Sonic and the fake Shadow he met. Also in an early script for Sonic Forces, Mephiles was gonna show up last minute as the final boss. That would have been an interesting plot twist. But no, instead we got the final boss again from Colors and Lost World. 9:40 Trust me, soap is very slippery. 12:12 In Sonic 2006, Shadow's story is easily the best out of all three in my opinion. 18:34 In Sonic Lost World, I didn't like the betrayal twist at the end. 40:04 I'd say Sonic Unleashed deserves a 9 or higher. I so agree that it's one of the best.
As someone who absolutely loved Sonic CD I'll say that I loved the gimmick of time travel: go back into the past to break the Death Egg then complete the level. Do that on the first two acts and you'd get the good future for that zone in Act 3. Otherwise you'd get the bad future. It made the levels have you do more than just completing it as quickly as you could with 50+ rings. It was a challenge and while I agree with your thoughts on the wacky level design I nonetheless enjoyed the ride and time spent to beat it with the good ending. Also at the time, the idea of getting the quality of music we did was virtually unheard of. Sure there was TurboGrafx CD but in my school that system was virtually non-existant. So between the visuals, the gameplay the music, basically the whole package - I think a lot of us have strong nostalgia for this game.
totally agree! I totally loved the feeling of getting the good future :) it gave me a great sense of accomplishment :) and all the zones were fun because they were not repetitive
I finally watched the Sonic movie after getting it for Christmas and I've been wanting to play some Sonic games since. What's the best way to go about playing them? I nearly got them on Steam but I'd always see at least 1 negative review saying that the ports were bad, needed a bunch of fan made fixes and improvements just to run well and things like that. I know it was just 1 or 2 reviews per game but it was still off putting, so knowing exactly the best way to play them would be nice. Also, SO glad to see Unleashed in S tier in this video. While I barely got anywhere I played it on the WII when I was younger and loved the game and the whole werehog thing, hell I watched that trailer involving the ghost characters trying to scare Sonic a few days ago and that alone made me want to play a werewolf character in ESO.
Sonic adventure port actually sucks and yes you need mods to make it look better and fix the bugs, its not that complicated but if you dont want to do that sonic adventure 2 its better on pc, the differences dont mess up the game that much
best place to start would be generations for 3d and mania for 2d. both have really good ports on steam, with generations in particular being a lot better on pc than on console

if you can get an original copy of it i’d go for it (or if ur just really good with emulators), i just paired an xbox one controller to my pc through a dolphin emulator with a copy of the game i got on pc, and mapping the controls got funky for some reason and like every few minutes it would go from full screen to a small bordered window and pause the game, idk. i would shoot for a console copy if i were gonna replay it again, but for some reason shadow the hedgehog worked a lot better on my pc and was still pretty fun to play

Amen
Would love if Sonic game world has human-animal world concept, instead of just make Sonic he's like from the other world
Real😂
This is exactly why I feel weird about Super Mario Odyssey
I like the Unleashed humans but I honestly prefer anime style people like Sonic X

It’s crazy to me how people say Sonic Colors is “overrated” after it’s been underrated prior to SC: Ultimate’s release
I'm good at classic games, but i like Adventure 1's controls more, specially Sonic's movement and spindash.

@@DarkShadowX9 sa2 is billions of times better then sa1

Silver and Sonic don’t turn and control as well as regular 06, and I find myself messing up in some stages (note: I played Project 06 before 06 so it’s not a bias thing). P06 however does make snow boarding and mach speed sections playable now which is amazing. Tails and Knuckles control better in P06 too
Sonic Generations is and probably will be my favorite Sonic game ever 😄
Sonic forces is so underrated I used to play it when I was younger and it felt like a masterpiece the gameplay levels and story is fun
idc how repetitive the gameplay is I can't help but LOVE sonic heroes.
I thought I was the only one, that game is incredible
As great as the game is, the level design is nowhere near the best. Best level designs goes to either Sonic Adventure 1 or 06.
Sonic Unleashed is sooooo gooood man. I'm glad someone actually acknowledged it for one.
Still my favorite game.
and yakuza
Even better assumption, what if they didnt split the team to work on secret rings? Both flopped, so imagine what they could've been with time.
SA2B is the greatest Sonic game ever made, in my opinion. I’m okay with only playing it for the rest of my life.
Thank God (or Nintendo?) it did! Can't stand the rebooted game/character designs
I wonder how it would be if it was finished for current (or current for the time) consoles
I still think it would of failed because boom had so much wrong with the only reason rise of lyric is a success is if it's not sonic boom
@@jackthestar1292still would of failed
First of all GREAT VIDEO this is one of the BEST tier lists I've ever seen its so well done keep up the great work man!
Colors is 2d like classic Sonic and the few times it is 3d can be chalked up to the equivalent of special stages in classic Sonic, with difference being the ones in colors aren't optional, because they need to check that 3d modern Sonic box.
to me adventure 1 is the 3d sonic game that feels the most like a classic sonic game.
The original games weren't cartoony. Meta era games try too be overly contoony which is just gross.
Right in my opinion the redesigns were not that bad and I liked them as well tbh
@- SageAegis - his design or like his personality?
@- SageAegis - Why? It felt like a natural change to me given that knuckles is meant to be somewhat brawny and strong.
The reasson why we’re angry about the short quils is because we’re literaly going backwards (even if Classic sonic is there already)
I'm pretty sure they changed the designs so it'd be better to animate the characters
While Colors story is bad and we have barely any 3d, and with wisp that make sonic that either cheapen Sonic or slow him down like laser=cheap and hover=slow.
same i was like that to but when i stared playing the zelda games that's when i started caring about the story in games.

Agreed about LW. I would love to see an Ultimate version of Sonic Lost World on Switch. Very underrated Sonic game
I'm like 60 - 70% in agreement with this list:
- I think SA2 is better than SA but marginally
- Sonic CD is much higher in my opinion, one of the best classic sonic soundtracks by far
- Heroes would also be a little higher for me but definitely agree with the repetitive level design
- Lost World, 06 & Rise of Lyric all would've been in dead last for me
All in all, i really enjoyed this trip down memory lane and think about ranking these myself, great video!
I personally liked Sonic Unleashed.
It was new and the Werehog was really cool.
*Sees Sonic Unleashed in S-Tier.*
Ah, finally someone who sees the true beauty and perfection that is Sonic Unleashed.

Sonic Unleashed is also my favorite sonic game. So many great memories and I still love playing it to this day!
Im happy about Sonic Unleashed being S tier, that was literally my favorite game. But I also liked Sonic Heroes a lot, but i can see why you put it on C tier, The soundtracks in the game just made me love the game.
YOU HURT THE CHAO? ILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU
For real though, this tierlist was spot on. I agreed with almost everything you said. Good stuff man!
It was cool to see someone rank Sonic 006 higher then usual. Like I understand the game isn’t great but half the people who judge the game only talk about the bugs the game has and that’s it. It was cool to see someone grab a take on the hubs and the level design
I’m glad people are starting to appreciate unleashed. It was my favorite for a long time.
I just found this video through my extensive time trying to get internet opinions on whether or not to buy sonic frontiers and I had to like and sub and thank you for this video. My absolute all time favorite sonic game is Sonic Unleashed and to see someone else have such a good take on my favorite game... best video I've ever seen, and you deserve all the subs friend!!
Sonic Generations is my childhood
So happy it got A tier
It's so dope on next gen with the fps boost.
Mario in LW makes the game way worse, but Sonic in LW is great imo. So i desagree.
Also shootouts to sonic riders too, those 2 games were godlike as well.
the best thing about Rise of Lyric is that it's Wii U exclusive, you can't play it anywhere else
Play PO6
Mine was 06 until frontiers…
I was scratching my head about including Boom on the list. But then I thought about how Shadow is technically more fitting for the list since it continued Shadow's story from SA2 and Heroes. Just felt kinda odd being left out to me.
Shadow the Hedgehog is the literal definition of a spinoff game
Putting sonic lost world above CD is crazy dude
Gotta say, agreed to death on Unleashed. Best soundtrack in the series, period.
I love Sonic and the Secret rings. A bit overly tough in some areas for no reason but a great game never the less. The ost is an absolute banger and the story is amazing in my opinion
so glad to see Unleashed finally getting the love it deserves
He forgot shadow the game think that was a sonic game right? 🎮
Yea sonic as a werewolf 🐺 unforgettable game sonic unleashed was awesome 🔥 🌉
Putting colors above generations is CRIMINALLL😂 love the video brother ❤🫶🏾
You should do a Sonic music tier list... Either with vocal tracks or OSTs.
I believe there's a fan project trying to revive and polish Chronicles, so that's some good news also Bioware lost all the music data (Aside from the intro track) meaning the demos don't exist which is strange considering they should've at least have back ups but then again the game was rushed, so eh.
But overall yeah a Sonic RPG definitely deserves a second chance (Especially with the "Eggman wins" cliffhanger) I still remember in Chronicles you could maintain Sonic being kind yet cocky, turn him into a big softie for his friends (Even make Sonamy legit) or convert him into being a total sociopath lol!
Sonic heroes may have it's downsides but it's my favorite game. It's a masterpiece to me lol. Also as bad as glitches were, and how rushed it was, I love sonic 06

@@roilo8560 I agree, mania is top tier but sonic3&K was the goat

It's so nice to see Sonic Unleashed get so much love and it deserves it, definitely the best Sonic game ever and no one will ever change my mind
Half of the game is dogshit
I totally loved the feeling of getting the good future :) it gave me a great sense of accomplishment :)
and all the zones were fun because they were not repetitive
Unleased is my favorite game too. The sound the world the gameplay... It is amazing and eeeeeextrem underaded
I LOVE SONIC UNLEASHED. THE WHEREHOG WAS AMAZING AND THE DAY TIME WAS FAST AND INTENSE. LOVED ALL OF IT
Great tierlist! Also, was the tierlist going off of by what you have played or no?
I have played all of the games I ranked except for Sonic Boom. I'm not being objective with this tier list, this is just from pure enjoyment.
