This is strangely a topic that isn't talked about a whole lot. Thanks for showing that "bad" games in this series have a side of good to them, Matt! :)

This was great video to highlight the strong parts of each mainline title. My hope for ther series is the Sonic Team looks back at the strongest qualities of previous games and incorporate those qualities into Frontiers and future titles. I am really happy to see somebody made this exact video. With a series as inconsistent and bizarre as Sonic it’s good to see somebody break down the appeal of each and every main game; really helps put things into perspective.
this video is incredibly reminiscent of the debate vids with premydaremy, twip, and sam procastinates. The funny thing is i literally watched those yesterday.
In my opinion, the best part of Sonic Forces is the visual design. It’s a nice and clean mix of Lost World’s cartoonish art style, and Unleashed relative realism. Looking at levels from Forces you can tell it’s a Sonic game specifically, and not just some other platformer. Although the customization is good, I think it hasn’t been brought to its full potential and could be greatly improved on in the future if they don’t scrap it altogether
adding to this comment - the camera work for Forces is personally another highlight because even just watching the cutscenes or gameplay, it looks so cinematic.
Another thing Forces does masterfully is the atmosphere and sense of immersion you get in the game's setting. Every little detail from the menus, to the sound design, to the levels themselves makes you feel like you're apart of this larger than life conflict and in the middle of a battlefield. Which immersed me into the story and its moments more and it made it all feel so much fun.
@@DSmith3279 you know, I replayed the game a while back... and I will agree to this with how much detail they've put... I had my avatar wear one of the default glasses and on the final cutscene where Sonic sees you off , instead of just having the glass transparent like you would for a minor thing, they actually gave it that lens effect, there was a bit of blur just for that part while everything else looked normal - it blew me off
Forces was super ambitious imo and the graphics and story definitely reflect that, it just didn't translate well into actual gameplay. I think if customization hadn't had so much focus in development the game could have been a lot better.
… Unleashed’s hub worlds were absolutely phenomenal. I want something very similar for the next 3D Sonic game; the idea of travelling between biomes and countries between foot and having these cute safe zones is deeply appealing to me.
I remember when I first played unleashed with 2 new things some werehog that you would physically beat up enemies with and some fast ass boost mechanic like the fastest we had been in a sonic game. but at that time it was just so fun to just boost through enemies and stuff
My top 5: 1. Sonic Mania - Everything is perfect 2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Gameplay 3. Sonic Heroes - Combat Mechanics 4. Sonic Adventure 2 - Variety in Gameplay 5. Sonic Generations - Level Design
10:58 I've been using this same argument for so long, but nobody ever responds to it (because it's the ultimate argument, lol): Replay the levels repeatedly to learn new strategies for beating the levels faster, since Sonic is about speed and you should be replaying to beat your previous time. That there is the replay value for Sonic games. People gripe about Boost being too fast to react to anything, but learning the levels through replays can make Boost look really neat and spectacular when you get good at a level.
It wasn't mediocre like the 2006 Sonic game. I did enjoy the feature of a custom character. Even though that plot was over the top and the gameplay was limited, I was intrigued and completed the game storyline. The end credits don't show what became of Eggman. It's for the better. I rented it and made some good avatar characters.
@@Steffo414 Man am I glad I don't have your taste in games have fun with your minority opinion that maybe 15 other people agree with. If you like games that play themselves good on you
11:17 What you just said here, this can also apply to Crash Bandicoot players ironically enough. When it comes to Sonic and Crash, I can think of no other games that encourage you to learn the levels and master them through mistakes and experiences in order to get better. It’s kinda weird to say because, fundamentally, they’re very different franchises, but they are very similar in that single regard. You’re not gonna get it the first try, and the devs KNEW this. They WANTED you to get better on your own terms.
I love comparing Mario & Sonic to Crash & Spyro. In both cases, the generational jump correlates with the same directional shift on the color wheel (Blue to Purple, Red to orange), for one. Plus Spyro got incredibly inconsistent and a bit more gimmicky later on past the first few main games similarly to Sonic.
another aspect about sonic heroes i Absolutely loved is metal sonics treatment where he feels like a fully fleshed out character with so much to em getting a kickass crush 40 song and an amazing neo form
I love it when people put "every Sonic game" in their video titles, and ignore half the library. Even if we're only talking about proper Sonic platformers, not spinoff puzzle games or special appearances or whatever. The SMS 8-bit ones were main releases! People always forget that. And the handheld-exclusive ones definitely deserve a mention, especially in a list like this. Not picking on you in particular though. Everyone does this!
@@mbdg6810 but like I said, still not accurate. The 8-bit Master System games were main games. The 8-bit Game Gear ports of them were... ports of main games. I get that it was an unusual way of doing things, having two main versions seperately, but it is what Sega did.
8:46 Yo whaaaaaaaaaaaaat? I never knew that. I never thought that a game I’ve been playing for almost 10 years now can STILL surprise me to this day :0
I disagree with a few things here: - While I love Unleashed a lot. I don't think Unleashed is the most polished game at all. One of those things is due to the framerate alone, but also some controls could be better. It was absolutely the most polished Sonic when it came out, but If we're going for most polished, I'd have to give it to Colors or Generations. Those games cleaned up the boost formula with stuff like the homing attack being a separate button. I think you could've given Unleashed graphics instead, game looked amazing for 2008. - Best soundtrack should've absolutely gone to Unleashed IMO. 06 has a great soundtrack but I've almost never seen people call it the outright "best" of the series, since that's a pretty big title. Maybe I'm biased, but Unleashed has such a diverse soundtrack that fit the many cultures that the stages are based on, with excellent jazz themes for the night stages. It's probably the most high caliber Sonic OST, IMO. - I'd give Heroes the title of "best playable side characters". Controlling everyone in Heroes is really fun which is a huge difference from Adventure. Stage diversity is pretty good in that game, but I think many other Sonic games do that just as well. -I think saying the absolute best feature of Generations is "approachability" is doing it a disservice IMO. You could give the game so much more than that; for example, its best feature could easily be how well it brings back and recreates past elements from Sonic games. There's a lot there, idk, I think just saying approachability feels kinda lame for a game like Gens, even though I agree that it is the best. It's not really a "feature" -Same kind of goes for Mania. "Consistency" isn't a feature I don't mean to come off rude, this is just meant to be a critcism, I think it was a well made video, this is just my thoughts. I think you were a bit too worried about being "biased", it's all your opinion, so don't worry about it
I also like Sonic Heroes. It needed some polish with the gameplay but overall it’s a very good game I come back to from time to time. This video perfectly highlights all the strengths each game had.
@@addsullivan1300 "Guess I can't be the hero every time." That right there is one of the best character moments in the series as well as one of my favorite lines from the series.

@@sonic101official how is it not? You're dropped into Null Space and you hit the ground running and double boost to escape in 20 seconds or less. Sure there's more stage back in the real world to come when you escape, but given that the place was supposed to be inescapable it makes you wonder what was the point of it being there given how uneventful it was. Especially when you consider that 06 gave you actual stages in the ruined future, as well as gave time to wonder how is Sonic going get out of this one with establishing cutscenes after Eggman sent him and his friends there.
Shadow the Hedgehog - Best Combat: Say what you will about guns being in a Sonic game, but they were low-key super fun to use. Sonic and the Secret Rings - Best Set Pieces: The one time you got to play the automated sections from previous Sonic games, and they were exhilarating. Sonic and the Black Knight - Best Characterization: Sonic is at his absolute best in this game and constantly reminds me why I loved him so much in the first place.
Since its not on here the reason i personally enjoy the Shadow game is because i get to play and experience a sonic game the way i want. I even have replayed the game multiple times recently because i really enjoy that aspect of the game
You know if you ask me, I think that the level design in 06 is the best in the series, at least for what I'm looking for. In almost every part of the game, consistently, there are at least two paths to get where you're going, usually more. That's what I look for in Sonic level design.
not including shadow is funny but I will say I was always impressed by the multiple branching paths and how it used sonics cast for each different area
Sonic Adventure's levels still blow my mind to this day. 23 years latter, still discovering things. I love good level design and controls as the standards for a top tier platformer, Sonic Adventure definetly follows that lol. I like genesis or classic 2D style Sonic games, but it feels like i did a regression compared to Adventure. I can't choose between Sonic Adventure and Donkey Kong Country 2 as my favorite platformer, it's so hard.
For me, the best feature of Sonic frontier is that it has the best "character interaction" in the series. All the characters including the antagonists and side characters feel flesh out, they thought, they want to achieve goals, and actually act like a human person, not a cartoon character (But that is my opinion)
5:20 Yeah, that was the last hurrah of Sonic games before Sega had to go third-party. Technically the real ending takes place after the Dark Story. Their plot to conquer the world turned out to initiate a program that would put that ARK on a collision course with Earth, and they had to work together to stop this imminent destruction.
adventure 2 is my favorite cause 1 the amount of memes and fan dubs by snapcube 2 introduced shadow 3 the level design 4 the story 5 it gave every character their time to shine 6 it better than adventure 1 cause their mouths dont move around that crazily and they dont have any big the cat levels i could go on
Back when the first movie came out, I saw PLENTY of people online who watched the movie grow interested in the series, and asking about what games fans recommend they play to start. For the most part fans said 1-3, sa1+2, colors, generations, forces, and mania. The problem with that is you’re bombarding newcomers with WAY too many titles, all of them completely different than the next. So when you said generations is the most approachable game and the best for newcomers to enter, I’m 100% on board. So for any fans watching this, if anyone ever asks you what game they should try first, definitely tell them generations. It’s basically an entry gate to plenty of Sonic’s past both in games that came out, and what made each game popular. From there, newcomers will decide what they’re interested in next.
Putting it into the historical context, I would've said about Sonic 1 that it was the first game of its kind, that it was revolutionary, a hit in gaming history and that's what made it stand out in the first place and one of the most acclaimed Sonic games of all time on the other hand, the game that everybody knows and have played at least once because, before 1991, we had never seen a platform game that combined speed and platforming in the style of Mario. The historical context is the unique aspect of Sonic's first game and I think that makes it one of the most (if not the most) important Sonic game in the last 31 years
Even if someone doesn't like the Games, there's still plenty of things to like about the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the Movies, the Cartoons, the Comic Books, etc., there are plenty of reasons to like Sonic beyond the Games, and that's just one of the many reasons why Sonic is such a beloved character.
I disagree with several points you make but you present them in a very entertaining way and it's always interesting to hear an alternate perspective especially a positive one.
I used to LOVE Sonic-06, Only because I loved how we got S-S-S(Sonic Shadow Silver) Super forms, I hated Elis and etc but I just loved that last part, and I LOVED Shadow's story, And silver's story was FLAME!
"At least in Mania it does not have Sandopolis" Welp, actually it does, Oil Ocean, but unlike Sandopolis, its good and fun, which proofs why Mania is more consistent
Ur really underrated. I can tell u put a lot of work into these videos, and I appreciate that. Wish I could support u on patreon, but unfortunately I dont have any money. Anyways, great video, keep up the good workl
The fangames like Sonic Time Twisted, Sonic and the Fallen Star and Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit (which are all free to play) throws all the classic 2D sonic games out of the water imo
Shadow the Hedgehog had the best gimmicks with the weapons. That was the only sonic game where the gimmick didn’t completely alter or take anything away from the base gameplay style. The wisps and warehog aren’t optional. But 90% of the time you didn’t even need to pick up a gun outside of a few platforming obstacles or enemies. You play as regular shadow through the whole game and no weapon forces you to play a certain way or only use it for one ability that the character should probably already have
Kinda surprised the handhelds and Sonic racing games weren't mentioned but I guess this was more of an every main console Sonic game thing than an every Sonic game that exists thing.
I do notice you don't cover Shadow the Hedgehog (most ambitious story, seriously the branching story that drastically changes was ambitious), and Sonic Boom (best Tie-in TV Show)
This is interesting cause Sonic is one of the series where almost every game has a lot of good ideas and cool parts no matter how bad the game itself is

For Sonic Unleashed you should’ve chosen best cutscenes! That’s something everyone can agree on!
i feel like you should have mentioned sonic boom
disconsidering... pretty much everything... the animation and expressions in it is amazing
I really love the idea of this video!
Unleashed is still all the way down there just to spite you btw
Do you genuinely despise Sonic Unleashed?
Unless it is the Wii game, no.
@@LunarBoo The Xbox 360/PS3 version is the best Sonic game of all-time IMHO. It's also the best platformer & brawler of all-time IMHO.
For me, the best feature of Sonic frontier is that it has the best "character interaction" in the series. All the characters including the antagonists and side characters feel flesh out, they thought, they want to achieve goals, and actually act like a human person, not a cartoon character
(But that is my opinion)
You could probably also say best use of Super Sonic, best combat variety, best boss music or best boss fights overall.
Respectable opinion 👍
Sonic Boom has best Character Design in my opinion. It gives them more personality and makes animation easier to follow
Yes absolutely and it also has a god tier graphics 😒
Nice video! I agree with your points! I would love to see a sequel video about the good parts in the spinoff games as well!
Sonic boom: see I don't exist
Sad that you didn't talk about spinoff games, but still this video is well-done, good job!
If Sonic R was on here, it would probably have the best out-of-place soundtrack
Finally a fan that isn’t in the community to complain 💀
5:20 Yeah, that was the last hurrah of Sonic games before Sega had to go third-party. Technically the real ending takes place after the Dark Story. Their plot to conquer the world turned out to initiate a program that would put that ARK on a collision course with Earth, and they had to work together to stop this imminent destruction.
The way you feel about Heroes is how I feel about Colors
I like how this guy respects the video idea and dosent say anything bad about the games
adventure 2 is my favorite cause 1 the amount of memes and fan dubs by snapcube 2 introduced shadow 3 the level design 4 the story 5 it gave every character their time to shine 6 it better than adventure 1 cause their mouths dont move around that crazily and they dont have any big the cat levels i could go on
Back when the first movie came out, I saw PLENTY of people online who watched the movie grow interested in the series, and asking about what games fans recommend they play to start.
I say play 1-3 and the adventure games. If you like those then give Unleashed, Colors, and Generations a shot.
The historical context is the unique aspect of Sonic's first game and I think that makes it one of the most (if not the most) important Sonic game in the last 31 years
_Bloody hell,_ thank you so much of reminding me of StormRedDesert! I loved seeing their AMVs in 2010-2012, and even revisiting them now!
Lost worlds is criminally underrated
I respect what you do. Keep it up. ✊🙌
13:03 Meanwhile Emerald Coast and Sand Hill: "I'am going to ignore that..."
2:36 and best soundtrack
I used to LOVE Sonic-06, Only because I loved how we got S-S-S(Sonic Shadow Silver) Super forms, I hated Elis and etc but I just loved that last part, and I LOVED Shadow's story, And silver's story was FLAME!
Sonic Frontiers: Best Bosses or Best Soundtrack.
You choose.
I remember sonic unleashed cutscenes not even Disney could make cutscenes like this. The quality is still beyond and ahead of it's time.
I may have been the only person on earth who loved Sonic 06
Nah you ain't dw
@@ebicbarton Yay ;)
I love how he didn’t even mention sonic boom
Sonic Frontiers world have the “Best Boss Battles”
Or use of combat
This dude really called 06 garbage but adventure good? That’s straight up hypocrisy. Everything “wrong” with 06 was worse in adventure, ten fold.
Yeha but in 06 you can fly in a variety of unintended ways!
I would argue that Sonic Forces has the best soundtrack in the series.
I would say sonic 3 is the most nostalgic sonic game
I’d say the other thing about sonic 2 that makes it unique is that it has a remake that adds a new zone.
I was actually thinking of getting Sonic Generations for my first 3d Sonic game.
Great.
"At least in Mania it does not have Sandopolis"
Welp, actually it does, Oil Ocean, but unlike Sandopolis, its good and fun, which proofs why Mania is more consistent
Sandopolis is the reason I prefer 2 over 3. At least metropolis isn't slow asf for 99% of the level
You play as regular shadow through the whole game and no weapon forces you to play a certain way or only use it for one ability that the character should probably already have
Sonic Unleashed gets the well polished award.
Me: That's awesome... But those QTE'S moments can go die in a fire.
Kinda surprised the handhelds and Sonic racing games weren't mentioned but I guess this was more of an every main console Sonic game thing than an every Sonic game that exists thing.
I do notice you don't cover Shadow the Hedgehog (most ambitious story, seriously the branching story that drastically changes was ambitious), and Sonic Boom (best Tie-in TV Show)
Ain't nobody gonna talk about the post credits scene for sonic movie 2
That has me hyped for sonic 3
This is interesting cause Sonic is one of the series where almost every game has a lot of good ideas and cool parts no matter how bad the game itself is
To me personally the best thign about Unleashed was Sonic himself. I feel like he as a character peaked in this game.
"My favorite zones are Grand Metropolis and Mystic Mansion"
(Proceeds to show Hang Castle after Grand Metropolis instead of Mystic Mansion)
I dare you to find the best part about Rise of Lyric 😅
Fantastic vid anyhow!
Shhhhh! Let's not talk about that game
