It feels Tails has got the hardest critique because everyone seems to have forgotten that Tails while a genius is a literal child, one of the youngest in the franchise regardless of his position, especially so compared to Sonic and Knuckles who are teens. Tails is a kid who is still finding himself and learning how the world works.
@@obd9660 Sure he should, I dislike how the Miles part got completely brushed over, just randomly threw it in at the end when Tails hates the name??? Or that Sonic wasn't the one to give him the name Tails once they bonded some. It just seems a lot of his critique, like a lot of young characters could simply be explained by his young age By all means none of them are perfect
@@TheYamiJK honestly i'm surprised i missed the fact that sonic didn't give him his nickname because i do remember only hearing him say his full name at the end, but now after reading your comment, yeah it is a bit odd and kinda makes me sad, but the movie was amazing and i think his character was done really well and i can't wait for the next one!
"Sonic was never meant to be a solo hero!" You don't understand how refreshing that is to hear from someone else! Thank you, Ace! Please take notes, Sega!
Yes and it's grating how this has become an unpopular opinion over the years. Literally Sonic has had friends since his second game. He's always been surrounded by people in his adventures; part of his charm is that he's the type that can befriend just about anyone even if the characters don't like him at first (which happens quite often). It's sad how game critics have changed public opinion on how to see Sonic's friends knowing very well that they've been around since forever.
@@Jinx101luv Don't even get me started on the whole "Too many characters" and "Sonic's stupid friends" crap! I swear I've heard people complaining about practically every single supporting character since Tails first came along; the mere inclusion of Tails was "too many stupid characters" for these whiners! And yet, for years, these are the type of people Sega have been trying to cater to, and the games simply haven't benefited from it in the slightest!
Yes thank you so much for bringing attention to this statement. This movie reminded me so many things that made me love Sonic and pals since Sonic Heroes. But I guess I distanced myself too far or my brain got de-sanitised from Sega's dumb choices on the franchise, but something always felt majorly off about Sonic games for a long time and this statement just highlighted one of them
People don’t give the dance scene enough credit. Remember Tails’ reaction to the people in the bar calling him a freak? He looked like he was having a traumatic flashback, clearly terrified. And when those people lifted him up, that was probably the first time he’s ever been praised in his life! Now that he’s one of the Emerald’s new guardians, I’m looking forward to seeing him fully develop into the hero that stood up to Shadow!
I love love LOVE Knuckles' dynamic with both Sonic and Tails. He's very much the big brother here! How he calls Tails "fox" is adorable and the way he scooped him up onto his shoulder in the baseball scene is precious. Team Sonic is 100% sibling material and I'm here for it!
I hate when people calls Tails a stalker in this movie for observing Sonic, because that's what Sonic did exactly towards humans in the first movie. If you are going to criticize him for stalk-ish behavior you must do it to both. I know Sonic's circumstances are different, but if you think about it irl, it's kinda creepy. Also, I don't think it's fair to compare Tails to Amy (as I saw people doing), he doesn't try to force him into a relationship or claiming he's a friend or anything. In fact, it's Sonic who calls him friend and he's surprised about it. He's just a 8 years old that admires Sonic but not overbearing.
Thank you! I seriously think people are overthinking the shower/bath reference. It was literally a dumb joke! He’s a kid, he’s not some kind of predator 😅
Here's the thing about Amy and Sonic, he actually does like her back but he's just way too shy to admit that. Amy also looks up to Sonic like Tails and wants to be a hero just like him.
One of my favorite quotes from Knuckles in this movie is: “You think your drones are a match for me? I will shatter them like the bones of- oh they are stairs”
My biggest hope is that the portrayal of Tails and Knuckles retroactively affects the characters in the games, bringing them back to the characters we know and love
@@Invisibleboy999 look at tails at the end of sa1 and all of sa2 then look at tails at chaos cutscene in forces and tell me they are the same character
This is the character portrayals I miss in the games. Showing a true bond between sonic, tails and knuckles each having different personalities but in times of crisis they are willing to use their different sets of skills and abilities to help one another and fight for what’s right and as a team, no member is underestimated.
I'm so glad you reiterated that Knuckles is not Dumb. In the games he was tricked by Robotnik and he's the last of his kind, which leans more into the fact that he's trusting, gullible and single-minded, but not SIMPLE-minded. Sure, he's dumb compared to Robotnik, but Robotnik is an egocentric genius with a stated 300IQ, it's all relative. And to us, it looks stupid to trust Robotnik because we, the audience, already know how evil and untrustworthy he is, but Knux's only source of information on Robotnik's trustworthiness is Robotnik himself.
Knuckles is small in knowledge, not small of mind. The length of his teachings and what he was taught were limited, not his ability to understand what he was taught. Which blends very well with someone who wears their heart on their sleeve and a pinch of someone who works best when thinking aloud.
It was such a pleasure to watch the characters That moment when Knuckles asked if there is Grape Ice cream i out loud just said "yes, they know" The love put into the movie is simply amazing
I think for me, Knuckles stole the show with his character. The writers perfectly showed what his character was like in S3&K and added their own twist by making him an honourable warrior, which I liked how it made him question Robotnik. Although I do feel like Tails should’ve had a bit more development, I think what we got from him was great. After all I loved how Tails actually fought with Sonic and Knuckles using his gadgets and flying, showing that he’s just as capable. And finally Sonic, I really liked his development in this and how he goes from a wannabe hero to a real one as well as becoming the Sonic we know from the games seen through his rejection of the Chaos Emeralds. I loved these characters and I can’t wait to see how they grow even further in the next film!
Knuckles' attitude is kind similar to Thor ( imo ), how they talk about worthiness and being a warrior especially how they grew to learn more about earth technology.
My only issue with Knuckles in the entire movie was I worried that they used his naivety for laughs a little to much. I was worried people would mistake him for being stupid because of it if they weren't familiar with his character, but luckily that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm really glad because he's my favorite character
Ok but to be fair, the whole BOOM series (games, comics, TV show) is an entirely different universe to the canon sonic time line. The Boom verse is just like the fairy tale games, (Sonic and the Magic Rings; Sonic and the Black Knight) in that they're something completely different and apart from the Canon story/timeline. So BOOM Knuckles being, well BOOM knuckles can be easily overlooked and forgiven seeing as he's a different version of Knuckles. The same with the rest of the gang, Sonic (being more lazy, angsty and more of a typical teen, plays more into his cocky egotistical side but you can tell he genuinely cares about helping people and adores his friends), Tails (a bit more mature than canon tails but still childish at times and he's much more outspoken), Amy (still has an obvious crush on Sonic but isn't the immature bratty stalker we spent years observing. She can actually maneuver her hammer, can fight well on her own, is more mature, is strong, outspoken, hard headed but still feminine and most important of all. She feels like her own character rather than "Sonic obsessed girl". She has her own ambitions, she has hobbies, she loves archeology, loves writting, has a passion for interior design, and isn't afraid to talk and or go against Sonic. Sorry for the long ass rant its just that Amy has always been a favorite character of mine and it's been a pain seeing her character seemingly never grow out of the whole "Sonics stalker" mold. And BOOM gave me the Amy I've been wanting ever since the SA games.)BOOM Knuckles in my opinion is great. But I understand why people dislike BOOM, I used to hate it too at the beggining but after watching the series and reading the comics (the game was a total fucking flop nothing good to be said about that monstrosity) I grew to like it as it's own thing.
As a Sonic fan, this movie was so vindicating and satisfying. If they can do this well with characterization of Team Sonic, imagine if they did the rest of the cast right. Tails is such an adorable shit that I bout cried from how cute he was in Siberia. However, Knuckles easily steals the show for me. Idris Elba, who is apparently himself a Sonic fan, plays both brutal fighter and oafish ineptitude perfectly. The moment at the temple island with his "hour of sorrow" where he is so dejected and hurt, I wanted to give him a hug so bad. If there's a word to describe him, it's genuine. Such a good movie, omg!! Also if the absolute mad lads, do Shadow justice, or even Silver, I may finally be able to rest.
God I can only *hope* we get a silver adaptation in the future. Sega has so many really cool and complex characters, it's a shame how many of them keep getting vaulted and forgotten about when they have been shown to have SO MUCH potential in the comics.
@Error Maybe Sonic will try to talk Shadow out of his revenge but it will not work because his friend was killed because of him unlike in case of Sonic where Longclaw was killed because of her rivalry with the echidna tribe. Maybe they will also show something about a theory I had when I watched Sonic X in japanese version where it was shown that 2 capsules were released from the ark so maybe one of them had Sonic in it because it made sense why he was so powerful among his species and why only he and Shadow could use the power of the emeralds.
Less than 10 seconds into his screen time and he’s already terrifying, but at the same time, he’s blunt, shows he has a strict moral code, and expects others to do the same, even if proven otherwise.
My only complaint about him is that they never displayed his gliding ability. Aside from climbing it was his most iconic ability even in the first 3d games.
As a dad (and sonic fan) I LOVED that I could take my kids to this and the message was "Kids, you're kids. Listen to the adults and take your time growing up." My kids love sonic and when the boot slammed down and the yellow glow started my 8 year old lost his damn mind. Easily my favorite moment ever in a theater.
I am so incredibly hyped for the 3rd movie! Especially seeing how well characterized Team Sonic was in this movie. I’m hoping for a really, really good depiction of Shadow in the next one. He might finally return to his former glory as our favourite ultimate life form.
@@AceCardGaming Ik. But we said the same thing about Idris Elba as Knuckles and Robert Pattinson as Batman. Who knows, they might even get Gilbert friggin Godfrey as Shadow. Only time will tell
In an recent interview on the Green Hill Zone podcast, the film’s co-writer Pat Casey talked about what to expect from Shadow when he shows up to make trouble for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the 3rd film, he says quote “Sonic’s never had to deal with someone as emotionally damaged like Shadow, when he sees Shadow he’s like ‘Well, I’ll just teach him about the power of friendship like with Knuckles!’ But that’s not going to work on Shadow, he's driven by anger and revenge" This makes me very excited & i can't wait for this movie to come out!!😃
While yes, sonic does things on his own He is his own hero But he isn’t a loner, he’s like Spider-Man With so many cool characters in his series it’s nice to see him team up with so many
During the scene where he's trashing the house with the dog and acting a fool, I remember laughing and saying out loud "this kid needs to get some friends"-- and the film legit cuts right to Tails. And I felt like it knew what I meant. Honestly, before the movie came out, I was super worried that Tails would just be there as set dressing. Like his friendship with Sonic would be underplayed and we wouldn't get to see much of them being a dynamic duo. People told me Tails just isn't all that interesting or important to Sonic's growth. At least not as much as characters like Knuckles and Shadow. To which *I fired back--!* Doesn't matter. I was hoping the movie would at the very least use Tails as a means to advance Sonic's progression from the last movie. Because while Sonic did find a family in the form of Tom and Maddi as his new parents... he still didn't find... friends. Buddies. Pals. His team. And growing up in the era where Sonic had loads of close-knit friends like Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, and the rest.. I needed that. I wanted Sonic to have that. So I felt really happy when Tom outright says it. Validated. This movie is about Sonic finding his team. His wingman. And I couldn't be more exctied. In the end, I'd still say Tails didn't get as much development or banter with Sonic as I may have wanted (I'm kinda sick of people saying he's not interesting just because he's not a rival or a love interest-- sidekicks can be fun characters, too!), but the acknowledgment of his significance to Sonic was nice and as cringey as the dance scene was-- when I realized it was a vehicle to show my boys bonding and later got that moment where they keep each other warm in the cabin... my cynical heart melted.
Besides the dance scene (which I thought was pretty cool), I also loved the little moment they had with each other where Tails tells his backstory and realizing that being weird isn't that bad. And I also find how cute Sonic was covering Tails with a blanket, only for Tails to cover Sonic with his two big, soft tails
@@iaminsideyourwalls2021 And then proceed to "have a situation", Yes lol. I enjoyed the movie and I'm looking forward to the third one. It definitely felt like the characters we were presented weren't "played" by any actor (if you get what I mean) so that's a pretty good thing the movie has going for it.
Sonic, is finally addressed at the fact that he's technically still just a teenager. Tails, Tails is Tails, he admires and found courage and friendship with Sonic. Knuckles, He's not an idiot, just naive.
While I do wish Tails had gotten some more on-screen development as Sonic’s sidekick, their instant friendship was definitely outright *palpable.* That first hug in Siberia when Sonic assured him that, yes, they’re friends, had me and my own friend both going _“Aww!”_ And Sonic’s concern for him after Tails was knocked unconscious really sold me on the idea that, come hell or high water, he cares about his little buddy so much. It made me really happy. Now for Knuckles, yes, I also was concerned about how his portrayal would go. Having a celebrity VA already seemed like not a great start to me, but he quickly proved to be the absolute best part of the movie, and I understand why his dynamic with Sonic got so much more focus than Tails’s - it was to help both of them grow. That and I kept finding myself wondering how Idris Elba was able to read some of his lines without bursting out laughing. “Tiny magic hedgehog eliminated!” and such all, but _especially_ the baseball scene at the end. Speaking of which, I love how clear it is that Knuckles is already shaping up to be a great big brother figure for Tails and it’s all so _wholesome_ and I love it. Another thing my friend and I found ourselves talking about concerning the baseball scene was when Knuckles asked if ice cream comes with grapes. Not only was I stunned that they actually snuck in _that_ reference of all things, we both decided: “I mean… it can if you want it to.” So let’s get some ice cream with grapes for our boy Knuckles, huh? All in all, this movie was almost everything I could have possibly wanted it to be (the post-credits scene kinda caught me off guard since I wasn’t expecting that particular character to get introduced so soon and also I was hoping for a sneak preview of Metal Sonic if anybody) and I’m genuinely looking forward to both the sequel and Knuckles’s spinoff (and hey, maybe Metal will show up there. Fingers crossed 🤞).
I actually enjoy watching Sonic's character is being built from the ground up in the movies. He's a kid who genuinely acts like one, and it's cute to watch him enjoy his childhood. I have a feeling that in the subsequent movies, the stakes will be increased, so Sonic might not be able to spend much of the future movies having fun. Although, he has some mature moments that didn't need to be taught to him at all, like how he didn't hold any sort of grudge against Knuckles for how the Echidna clan being the reason Longclaw died. He understood that the war between the Owls and the Echidnas had taken away important people in their lives, and that there's no point in continuing it.
I really do hope that Sega was watching when the first thing Tails did to help Sonic was ram Knuckles with a god damn car, man I can't tell you how refreshing that moment felt and still feels for me hehe it's like a big middle finger to how he's been handled recently.
There is also the fact they gave Sonic and Knuckles parents, Tails actually fights while also using his tech, Knuckles and Tails actually have meaningful interactions with each other, etc. I kinda believe the (somewhat) popular theory that Sega gave "guidelines" to Paramount about what they can and can't do with Sonic characters and Paramount threw those guidelines into the trash.
@@endoplasmaa Agreed I understood that they were starting him back at the beginning of his charachter arc which is fine I was cool with that, but even when he still needed Sonic to guide him he was still useful and helpful. THAT'S Tails not whatever the hell Sega thinks he is right now in the games.
@@GrayD_Fox That's almost every Sonic game that's come out in the past decade (except for Boom). I grew up on Sonic Adventure, so I know that Sonic's friends used to play key roles, but Sonic Team's philosophy since Sonic '06 has been to "have them there to cheer on Sonic and nothing else."
@@GrayD_Fox they don’t do anything in Colors either (DS, Wii or Ultimate). Or Unleashed. Or 06, or any of the Riders games, or the Rush games (unless we count Blaze as “friends”). Their counterparts do nothing in Secret Rings and BARELY do anything in Black Knight. It’s not just Forces, Gen, and Lost World
Thank you for explaining the distinction between Naive and dumb. I hate that people think that about Knuckles, like being sheltered and inexperienced with social interactions makes him dumb. Hopefully they get Shadow's characterization correct in the third movie.
This movie reminded me how Knuckles is the most interesting Sonic character. I just love his backstory with his tribe and being a guardian of the master emerald.
I can't believe they managed to make Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba of all people, so cute and child-like. Despite everything, Knuckles is just a child. He was forced to grow up too fast, but now that he has a family, he can learn how to enjoy life and be a kid again.
Agreed. Sonic movie 2 has been done so well. They handled the characters so well and this was the first time in a decade where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles have been written well and done justice
I loved the movie and the interactions between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles! Let's see what the third movie has in store for us. I really loved Tails & Knuckles in this movie. It feels like the best version of their characters! Let's see if that gets translated to the games and SEGA is taking notes...
@@fangirldreamer748 we still had material to adapt. I think the introduction of metal sonic would have been awesome. And Amy wouldn't have needed to share screen time with Shadow, if she'll even be introduced at all. And the Chaos incident would have established Knuckles as the guardian of the Master Emerald.
@@Hynotama There's a chance the knuckles tv show will introduce Amy and metal Sonic in it. That's what hoping for at lest. I also not shore if chaos will exist in the movie world, since they changed how the master emerald worked in the move.
This is the greatest knuckles we have ever seen he was amazing I can’t get over it him being given justice after so many years where he has been treated so awfully !! I just hope he continues to be this amazing and his awesome character being a badass does not get sidelined for who we know is coming next
Plenty of people liked it. The biggest distractors are critics who were indifferent to these movies to begin with, and game enthusiast who wanted to see more material from the games.
Hey, any scene that uses well enough a Bruno Mars song, specially that one in the background, is a plus for me, I don't care, I was happy all the way around when it happened 😍😍
I don't wanna put my hopes too high for the 3rd, cuz if I have low expectations, then the movie will be even greater. But I'm also scared that they might fall through the same cycle that the game developers did. Where they get impatient and fall into character stereotypes.
Yeah same here. I'm hoping it will be as good as the first two movies, especially since Shadow (one of my favourite characters) will be part of it, but I'm scared to get my hopes too high...
Hopefully they do stick the landing and make this the best trilogy ever!!! One little complaint that I have is that not enough people are going out to see these movies. Utter trash like Uncharted and Rampage have higher profits than the 2 Sonic movies which are better IMO
This film made me remember why i love these characters again and so excited to see how they handle the new characters as i think they can give some great improvements to old bad characters
I'm not even that big of a Sonic fan, but I REALLY enjoyed this movie. Ben Schwartz has done a great job as Sonic thus far, and while I was super hesitant of Idris Elba as Knuckles at first, my mind quickly changed after seeing him appear in the first trailer. He absolutely owned the role and stole every scene he was in, and was definitely the highlight of the movie for me. That perfect fusion of being intimidating, strong, stoic and hilariously naive worked so dang well, man. This movie has cemented Knuckles as one of my new favorite Sonic characters for sure. It was also great seeing Tails as more than a whiny scaredy cat kid and actually have some personality and depth. And Colleen killed it as always, she's fantastic as Tails.
I agree with all of this but - you gotta give Jim Carrey some credit where credit is due - his Robotnik depiction was SOOOO good! I love Sonic & co but was honestly worried about Robotnik's depiction ( at least in the first movie ) - from all the different Robotniks there are in Sonic media, right? And Jim really plays a really good Robotnik even without a Fat Suit. I like how he seems to be leaning in more into the comedic japanese Robotnik versions than the "super serious" / terrifying western Robotniks.
Its definitely great for what it is. Personally I just don't like wacky villains this much but I do much prefer his perfomance in this movie to the first. His pyschoticness felt well matched to the situation and knowing how mentally unstable he is made the threat of the emerald much more real at the end. I could get into it much more as Robotnik/Eggman in this movie, while in Sonic 1 I could only really take it as Jim Carrey growing a mustache and deciding to become Peta's personal mascot.
@@DeprecatedSC Idk man, I think Robotnik had some pretty great character moments in the first movie, like when he got in Tom's face and said "I surpassed EVERYTHING YOU'RE EVER GOING TO DO...by the time I was a toddler", or that story he told about the school bully, or his line to Sonic "Confidence...a fool's substitute for intelligence."
Awww but I loved the dance it was one of my favorites😂and I have to agree Sonic stating that even he is unworthy to hold such power just SCREAMS who he is! baby Knuckles cuter than baby Sonic...yes👀
I like the dance scene because the children around me seemed to very much enjoy it. I think the harsh critics forget that this is a family movie intended for the oldest of fans to the youngest of children. Was the dancing too much? Yes. Was the wedding unnecessarily long and ridiculous? Of course. But the younger children in the theater found these scenes to be hysterical. It was adorable. Edit: In the theater, when Knuckles is finished beating Sonic, this little kid yelled, "I hate you Knuckles!"
The last couple of weeks have been a rollercoaster for me. Played some old Harry Potter games and having a good time. Watched all of DuckTales 2017 and now becoming one of my favourite animated television programs. Finally, I saw Sonic 2 in the cinema and had a genuinely great time. Sonic 1 was an okay flick that didn't grab me much, but the sequel just offered much more of what I value not just in a Sonic film, but a film in general. Thumbs up, I missed good Easter Holidays. :D
With you pointing this out, it makes me a bit hopeful for what they’ll do in the future with these characters. Spoilers for the end credit scene I guess I’m still a bit worried about how they’ll portray Shadow, however. I feel like he started down the “character arc got thrown out the window” path pretty early on. *In his own game no less.* I really really REALLY hope that the writers for the movie disregard the way he’s portrayed in the modern stuff and focus on his character arc from SA2 and possibly Sonic Heroes if they follow the amnesia route. And if I had the responsibility of giving the writers references for how to portray him, I’d even send Sonic ‘06 their way, since he was done fantastically in that game, giving us context for how he acts after the whole amnesia bit. Heck, I’m certain he would have acted that way even if the amnesia thing never happened in the first place! So yeh, I really hope that the people behind the 3rd movie listen to the Shadow fans who have been suffering and stay true to his character in the game he appeared in. Fingers crossed!
I cannot tell you how much I’d be willing to kill if we got a reimagined and fixed 06 adventure plot for a prospective fourth movie for this purpose. That game was a mess but really gave us one of the best characterizations of Shadow, and Team Dark.
I mean, I honestly never liked Shadow, so the bar for me is incredibly low. From my point of view, I don't see how they could make edgy the hedgy worse.
A quote on Shadow’s character from one of the writers of the second movie: “He’s a match for Sonic, but with such a different personality. And unlike Knuckles who’s just sort of misled, Shadow is driven by anger and revenge. I almost feel like Sonic, when he encounters Shadow, he’s like ‘Well I’ll just teach him about the power of friendship like with Knuckles’ bada bing bada boom, but that’s not going to work on Shadow you know? Sonic *never had to deal with anyone as emotionally damaged as Shadow*.” Based on that, I feel a bit confident they’ll get Shadow right, but I hope they understand what they are doing by bringing him in. Shadow is the mature side of the franchise, and no, not because his recent portrayals make him edgy but because the fundamentals of his character deal with themes that kids don’t typically have to worry about: watching your best friend get murdered, going on a grief and rage-filled vendetta to commit omnicide, and learning to overcome your demons. Shadow is an anti-hero at this point because he does we he believes is the right thing to do and will do it at any cost. He’s probably Sonic’s most complex character if I’m being honest.
Hot take here… I didn’t mind the dance scene as I enjoyed the ridiculous fun of the moment. I’m not defending it from detractors as to each their own, just saying that I had fun with it.
Honestly, even though I was never a big Sonic fan, these two movies are some of the only new pieces of media which bring me back to my childhood. I miss the days where movies I watched were just entertainment and nothing else and that is exactly what these films are: fun.
Arlo's opinions were really disappointing to me, mostly because I think he was unable to see what you've summed up in this video, the main trio (and eggman) of characters being just so good
He’s entitled to his opinion of course but I definitely think he either missed the positives or just didn’t want to see them. He seemed to go to see the movie with a group of friends who didn’t like it either, which tends to taint opinions too.
@@AceCardGaming arlo was ready to dislike it for the “funny review” Hence why he had to focus on things nobody else would bat an eye to unless they were looking for faults
He was trying to use social media influence to try and convince other people that it was bad simply because he didn’t like it, and he did so by spitting out utter nonsense and lies to manipulate weak minded viewers who are incapable of forming their own opinions. Unfortunately there are plenty of content creators that do that and it sucks. One example is the Cosmonaut Variety Hour, his criticisms can be totally unprofessional, complete lies, or straight up hypocrisy. He tried to criticize a scene in the Amazing Spider-Man 2(which I hate btw) because it had a song that he didn’t like. He claims that in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy that Anakin Skywalker just started murdering people whenever something didn’t go his way(which is a total lie) while showing a scene of him slaughtering the Tusken Raiders that KILLED HIS MOTHER. And the he said that he didn’t mind characters in Star Wars just being good at things(referring to Rey) but then complains about Sabine Wren from Rebels being too much of a Mary Sue which just shows his hypocrisy. Arlo is no different, he tried criticizing the design of Knuckles’ gloves even though they are 100% accurate to the source material. He acts like he’s some huge Sonic fan but only ever played the first two games on the Genesis. He deserved all of the backlash that he got for his total bs.
I love how they actually managed to make not evenn decent video game movie, they made THE movie to start off all good video game movies in the future, and i love that sonic is the one to do it.
I agree that the dance scene and the wedding scene were both longer than they needed to be. However, I did enjoy them both, they brought up some heart with sonic and tails. And the wedding was a fun way to give us some time with the humans without making them more important than the animal characters. This movie was a love letter to fans and I’m confident that the 3rd movie will be another great success, who do we think they’ll get to voice Shadow?
I enjoyed the dance scene, but the wedding scene was just. Way too long. The people in my theater were starting to complain about sonic being offscreen for so long. But it was funny so I guess it isn't all that bad
Also, if they dont end up choosing Shadows previous voice actor, i think they'd choose someone like Morgan Freeman or something. Dunno why, I think it kinda fits
Seeing Team Sonic in the movies like that literally reawakened the sonic fan within me. I'm worried about Shadow, because his debut came with...a lot more baggage, but I'll have faith in the teams behind the movies to pull it off well. Also, I would kill for the "I found you, faker!" on the big screen.
This movie made me feel so much raw emotion for the entire cast in this movie, I genuinely believe the future will look bright for their characterization and redemption
Nic my friend, raw emotion is at the highest peak of describing it. I was euphoric watching the whole movie 😍😍, like, highly electrified, gasping, filled with a level of joy that transpired all levels of emotions for me that I've never felt in a movie before. That's how much a freaking adored this movie that I saw it twice 😍😍
As … interesting as the dance bit was, it was also a great way to show off both how creative tails is, and how he is different from Robotnic. It’s a parallel to the dance scene in the first film. Two genius, two out casts dancing using machines. But the difference was that Tails was using his gizmos to enhance the experience with his friend. He is not trying to replace Sonic or others with his machines, but is sharing something he loves and good at with others. Where as Robotnic admits his machines are everything to him, dances alone to his machines, and shouts and semi berates the only living him near him when interrupted I think Tails will also get a bit more development in the 3rd film (if it goes ahead). Sonic and Knuckles development did take more centre stage, but it makes sense. Sonic needed to grow into the leadership role and Knuckles needed to learn to trust Sonic and become a but less naive. Something needs to take a step back, and Tails full emergence into a hero in his own right would be it. Also i think it would interfere with the creation of the bond.
YEESSS!!! I would actually prefer for her to appear in the show before the movie just to see how they will introduce her and her dynamic with Knuckles. It would be so funny to see how their rivalry develops and how Knuckles handles her flirtatious antics (which I'm sure will go over his head given how literal and oblivious he is in the movie lol).
@@Jinx101luv I think Knuckles might actually get shy around her since his manual from the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 game says he is shy around girls and they also said that the he likes grapes so maybe at first he will oblivious but then he might get shy later on. Either way I definitely wanna see Paramount do something amazing with their dynamic and relationship
Though I do hope to see her character in the movie or knuckles series, I'm mainly hoping that they don't make her as a flirtatious character, at least not towards knuckles (and I really hope they don't give the two a romantic relationship) considering he's 15-16 while Rouge is 18+, which is something that has always bothered me in the games/sonic x etc :/
For criticism of Sonic's character in the 1st movie is that since being in isolation for years and now having a chance to interact with donut lord and pretzel lady as much as possible before he leaves which makes for the road trip and driving to the Sutro Tower in San Francisco
On the topic of Ken Penders' issue with the film: He is EXTREMELY misguided in his claims. Not only does Knuckles father in the movie go unnamed, and not look anything like Locke. But the way the Master Emerald empowered Eggman in the film has nothing to do with Enerjax. In truth, "Chaos Eggman" is based on "God Robotnik" from the Fleetway Sonic the Comic series (Just compare the two, and the similarities are obvious.)
I love how they wrote everyone in this movie. I wish I could say I like the games' stories just as much, but the only game I can say that to is Sonic 3&K.
Yeah they went crazy on the characterization of the main trio in this movie. I absolutely love the writing and also Idris & Colleen's performances were amazing! I can't lie, I was a bit worried Idris might ruin my immersion in the movie but he did Knuckles great justice, I couldnt help but love it as a whole. Hopefully Frontiers can give us something to match
I love seeing sonic, tails and knuckles with their parts done right in sonic movie 2 and this is a great character video about the sonic heroes so I can't wait to see a character video of amy rose! 💙🌟❤✌🤩💛
i wonder how these characters will evolve in hte next sonic movie, and the knuckles show. will knuckles start picking up social ques, and learn too be more laid back? will tails gain more confidance? will sonic get taller? i guess it depends on the time gap
I'm inclining to believe that the Knuckles show is going to be a prequel of the events of the second and even the first movie, because I wonder how would the explore Knuckles going solo if he's now paired up with two allies
12:25 This is pretty much how I felt. While there was a ridiculous amount of focus on the human characters for that segment of the movie, the way it showcased Tails's gadgets helps to make it somewhat relevant, so I can't hate it too much.
This was my favorite review for this movie! You summed up my thoughts and feelings exactly about this movie! I loved it so much that at many parts I stopped eating popcorn and just gazed amazed at the big screen! Great video! Subscribed! 💙💛❤
Really enjoyed the film and loved how well the characters were treated it was so refreshing to see some effort put into those characters agaian after 10 years blatant flanderization
@@brandenaustin37 Flanderization is the process through which a single element of a character's personality, often an originally mild element, is inflated in importance over the course of a work until it becomes their primary defining characteristic. Tails it can be argued that he was flanderized, and shadow. But every other sonic character has never been written that way.
Awesome video! I agree that this movie did the characters justice and I'm really loving the relationship between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles! I can't wait to see more of their relationship in the third movie!
I freaking love this movie! Mainly when the focus is on the Sonic Team (no duh). Knuckles was without a doubt my favorite with how excellent his character was being both faithful to his OG yet also something new that makes him even more memorable in my opinion! In fact, my favorite part wasn’t the mid-credits scene, with was so YES!!!!! 🤩 It was the scene where Knuckles was reading the texts in the evil coffee shop aloud and kept saying “Dot, dot, dot…dot, dot, dot… dot, dot, dot.” I never knew someone reading the busy typing signal out loud could be so funny, and yet here it was. Utter Freaking Fantastic. 👍🏻
I also love how Jim portrays Robotnik/Eggman in this movie. In the first movie, Robotnik/Eggman is presented as a technological genius with, what I assumed, many easily earned doctorates who assumes everyone is beneath him, does not fully take things completely seriously due to his pride and ego, and, minus Agent Stone, believes that he can only trust technology, especially any explicitly made by himself. He only becomes rattled due to Sonic. The second movie as well as the ending of the first movie leans more into that Mad Doctor personality that Eggman is known for. He becomes obsessed with destroying Sonic, is not scheming in the background and openly declares his intentions of world domination, he uses the power of the Emerald to create a robot literally like they are in the games, even sporting his majestic mustache, and is both crazed and calculating.
I would love to see a Shadow The Hedgehog spin off movie or a Knuckles’ Chaotix series that the Knuckles series could… set up his role as leader of the rag tag team
Gonna be honest, I get why people have issue with the scene, but seeing the dance scene was what fully convinced me it was gonna be a great movie. I had been feeling mixed-to-positive on the movie as I was watching, not sure what to think, but seeing Sonic and Tails work things out and do a truly stellar dance routine had me welling up with all kinds of excitement, mainly because this showed the two of them working together. Sure, there are some flaws to the scene, but I don't care too much. The duo of Sonic and Tails became fully cemented in my mind after that, and I honestly hold the scene in high regard.
i just hope that for the 3rd movie, the team will put the same effort for "that character" i have hopes and fears too and pls sega, take notes from paramount about your characters too 🙏
While the characters were different from their game counterparts, they have the same spirit. It feels like this is how the game characters would be if they had the backstory that they do in the movies and went through the same experiences.
Man, not only were the characters done right... This is the first time knuckles has been shown genuine respect as a character from the official source for... A *long* time
Both knuckles and sonic are mirror of each other, or different sides of the same coin. Both became orphans at a young age, and both are trying to find their destinies through their own misguided beliefs. What’s so awesome about both of them is by joining forces, they compliment each other’s strength and weaknesses, building a strong and well-balance team. Amazing writing and character development. Now I can’t wait how they add team dark and how they will rival and compliment with team sonic!
Favorite thing is the movies make a new continuity with the characters, and it does it well rather than how the live Mario movie did it. It sticks with elements from the game, while making its own concepts that don't just copy off of the games. Like instead of the master emerald being it's own thing at first, it was created via the combination of the chaos emeralds, which I'm willing to believe in this continuity. So at the end, in a way, it feels like the same old Sonic I'm familiar with, but it was new in a good way.
I concur they really did get these characters and it makes me excited and hopeful to see what they'll do with Shadow. I do think they intentionally made Sonic younger here not only to give him a arc to grow into the Sonic we know and love but also because these two movies take place in the Classic era, so a younger Sonic is a additional attempt to be faithful to original continuity. I really hope 3 gives us a time skip to a allow for a more mature and teenage Sonic that is better equipped to handle Project Shadow. The only change I outright disliked was making Master Emerald the combined form of the Chaos Emeralds, sure it makes things simpler but now it loses its ability to take away or empower the emeralds, its unique lore from 3&K and Adventure and its quasi sentience.
But Sonic released the emeralds at the end and Knuckles repaired the Master Emerald. So it would seem they are now separate and things can be as they are in the games if they choose to.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Well I mean, if their intentions for the character line up with what I want him to grow into, then where is the unlikelihood? I’m just analysing what I’m seeing. Not what people say in external interviews.
@@AceCardGaming the unlikelihood is they didn't make movie sonic intending for him grow into game sonic. They wrote him as an excitable kid because that's how they saw genesis Era sonic. He'll most likely grow with new installments, but said growth would be in service to making him a more distinct alternative to game sonic. In a situation where hopefully both versions of the character can still be enjoyable to fans, while both offer something the other simply doesn't.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Do you have a link to a statement confirming they wrote Sonic to be different and intend to make his more mature version more different still to his game depiction? Otherwise it’s just down to us both having a different interpretation of things and that’s perfectly fine.
My little brother loved that dance. To the point of wanting to learn breakdance himself. I think most kids would share a rather positive stance towards the scene. even if us adults cringe about it.
I wouldn't hold your breath on either one. Both movie franchises made the changes they did to appeal to a different demographic than just previous fans.
@@fightingmedialounge519 And that's ok. Besides the fans of the Raimi and Webb movies are older and their not going to be ok with a lot of stuff in the MCU. Also, both movies franchises have made those changes to appeal to modern fans and to attract new ones. You say that we shouldn't hold our breath? I say let's wait and see, since Spidey 4 and Sonic 3 aren't out yet and we haven't seen the characters grow further.
@@windghost2 never said it wasn't fine; I'm saying this pipe dream people have where these movies are trying to slowy make the protagonist like the character you know , rather than just accepting these are delibrately different takes on them, is only going to end in disappointment. Also fans of previous Spiderman movies have nothing to do with what I just said.
Special shout-out to the transition in Tails' relationship with Sonic throughout the movie. Early on there's a point where he goes "Only Sonic the Hedgehog could-" something or other, and it's clear he's fanboying over Sonic in the moment. Tails will go on to make a similar comment a little later, although with a different thing only Sonic could do. But near the end of the movie, there's a moment when Tails comes in for the rescue, and he says "Only Sonic the Hedgehog could need this much saving!" or something like that; he's transitioned from a fan to a friend, giving Sonic a hard time for his repeated failures without actually being upset about it. He's realized Sonic is an actual person and not an idol to worship. It's really subtle, since Tails' arc is background to Sonic and Knuckles', but it's still a great example of how Tails isn't static, even if he doesn't get as many chances to shine as Sonic and Knuckles.
I hope Cosmo and the Metarex come in after a few movies! I think it was the Metarex that gave our heroes their biggest challenge! Solaris was the most powerful, but the Metarex put them through a full on war where they struggled just to make it TO the final battle!
Soo glad I'm not the only one who thinks so hehe, I've been hoping for a return of Cosmo for so long now and one of the absolute best moments Tails has ever had is that episode where Shadow is trying to kill her and he just refuses to let him do it. And puts up one hell of a fight in that attempt to stop Shadow too, and it's preciously that moment that perhaps is the most infuriating part about Forces Tails. This little fox was willing to stand up to SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG to protect Cosmo so seeing him cowering before Chaos was just insulting.
11:20 man im forreal tearing up Hard af over this song bro. it's been so0 long since i heard it and it's brining back so many memories. i didnt realize how important these games were to my childhood and seeing this movie, i swear to god they did the games justice bro
It's my belief that he wasn't needy because he was younger, he was needy because he's been on Earth since he was a baby and was isolated the entire time he was on Earth. It's why he gets so upset after winning a game of baseball against himself, he's isolated, he's lonely. So when he's actually able to interact with people in a meaningful way, he gets needy because he's finally getting the social interaction he's been craving for years.
Is it me or did the movie progress like the games? Sonic 1. Good for it's time, cliche story/gameplay, talked to death about at the time of its release, duller colors, but made lots of money at its release. Sonic 2. Better than the first game/movie, more color, new characters, extremely complex story, made more money than the first game/movie.
I don't know what anybody's problem is honestly that dance scene made me laugh my ass off and I loved it! But this was a very solid video and I enjoyed watching it!
You got me emotional throughout the whole Knuckles section. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was my first ever videogame and Knuckles is my favorite character from the franchise, sometimes competing with Shadow for that spot. Growing up Sonic was realising more and more games, I certainly didn't get to play all, and I learned about this misinterpretation of Knuckles as a dumb and comedic relief character. I was "What? Why? How?" How could such an awesome and badass character like Knuckles be taken as some kind of dumbass and be the laughingstock of this franchise? By all accounts it doesn't make any sense. So when the first Sonic movie was beautiful and such a success I placed all my faith in that this team would get my favorite character right. Even more so when I read that actor Idris Elba was reading and learning all he could about Knuckles' lore to do justice by the character. And well, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 the movie came out and I was blown away. My favorite character from one of the most significant things in my childhood was done justice. I loved the sequel movie and Knuckles was my favorite part. Excellent video 👍
Knuckles was great, felt like a mix of Drax and Starfire to me with how he handles Earth customs and phrases. Like you said he’s not an idiot, and actually has clever moments for his character despite how naive he could be. Like in the final battle where he helps come up with a plan to take down Eggman. Shows that Knuckles can offer more than just muscle. I actually thought the dance scene was adorable. Tails just has that little brother energy you can’t help but love, and despite his reluctance heading into danger Tails is no coward, and is willing to fight beside Sonic. I like how they handled the dynamic between Sonic and Tails, really made them fun to watch on screen. I hope in the next sonic movie they can bring in Amy and Rouge since Shadow is already confirmed. It’s never been a greater time to be a Sonic fan.
Are you saying Tails shouldn't be critiqued at all?
@@obd9660 Sure he should, I dislike how the Miles part got completely brushed over, just randomly threw it in at the end when Tails hates the name??? Or that Sonic wasn't the one to give him the name Tails once they bonded some.
It just seems a lot of his critique, like a lot of young characters could simply be explained by his young age
By all means none of them are perfect

"Sonic was never meant to be a solo hero!"
You don't understand how refreshing that is to hear from someone else!

Glad to see I’m not the only one who really liked the dance fight scene.

Plus, another facet of Knuckles they got right: he didn't chuckle!

Paramount Knuckles is a thousand times better than Boom Knuckles. Literally.
True but he's also funny
That's not really a high bar tbh
Blame it on Sega
That may be true, but I still greatly enjoy Himbo Knuckles
They absolutely nailed him! Such a pleasure to watch my friend.
Yep
Listen to the adults and take your time growing up."

@@liamphibia not really. Their pretty much polar opposites.
To which *I fired back--!*
Doesn't matter.

Not only was I stunned that they actually snuck in _that_ reference of all things, we both decided:
“I mean… it can if you want it to.”
So let’s get some ice cream with grapes for our boy Knuckles, huh?
Honestly as a dance fan, I actually loved the dance scene.
I just like people dancing in sync.
I kinda believe the (somewhat) popular theory that Sega gave "guidelines" to Paramount about what they can and can't do with Sonic characters and Paramount threw those guidelines into the trash.
god yes!! i was so relieved to see they didn't make him the weak sidekick like how he's been portrayed lately :')
YES such an iconic character intro. Sega better be taking notes.
My main thoughts during the climax were, "Sonic's friends are actually useful? This isn't like the games!"
Seriously, it was refreshing.
What fucking games did you play? Generations? Lost World? Forces? CAUSE THOSE ARE THE ONLY GAMES WHERE THE FRIENDS DONT DO SHIT.

Too bad Idris was never told to rap Unknown to M.E.
Agreed. Sonic movie 2 has been done so well. They handled the characters so well and this was the first time in a decade where Sonic, Tails and Knuckles have been written well and done justice
At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ken Penders sued God claiming that he invented Echidnas.
He'd sue any fanart where someone paints Knuckles green
I loved the movie and the interactions between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles!
Let's see what the third movie has in store for us.
I really loved Tails & Knuckles in this movie. It feels like the best version of their characters!
Let's see if that gets translated to the games and SEGA is taking notes...
Sadly the third movie will move on straight to Shadow. No Amy and Metal Sonic, no Angel Island and no Perfect Chaos.
@@Hynotama why?! I thought it would include. Most of the characters from Sonic Adventure 2!

I'm fully convinced I'm the only guy who liked the dance scene XD
Anyway, great video man. This made me realize even more stuff I liked about the film
Plenty of people liked it. The biggest distractors are critics who were indifferent to these movies to begin with, and game enthusiast who wanted to see more material from the games.
I personally didn’t like it, but it’s good you like it, I think it’s important to show sonic and tails friendship
I liked it as well
I like it I thinks it gives them personality in my opinion
Hey, any scene that uses well enough a Bruno Mars song, specially that one in the background, is a plus for me, I don't care, I was happy all the way around when it happened 😍😍
The dance scene did go on for a while, but my three year old loved it. Which is probably exactly what they were going for.
@@kuhanblock9380 its because both films have big stars. The rock and Tom holland
Low expectation is what helped the first film. Even before that ‘early design’ were hinted at.
I loved the brothers coming together I can’t wait for the third movie
I nearly cried laughing at just how funny he was in this movie. He is such a cartoon villain and they make it work well.
Wholely agreed! Jim's depiction is actually these days one of my favorite depictions of Eggman.
Honestly if he isn’t fat (weird request Ik) in the 3rd movie, I wouldn’t even mind it because Jim carrey is too good for Robotnik
Awww but I loved the dance it was one of my favorites😂and I have to agree Sonic stating that even he is unworthy to hold such power just SCREAMS who he is! baby Knuckles cuter than baby Sonic...yes👀
Agreed! Baby Knux is waaaay cuter than Sonic. 😉
@@AceCardGaming Just wait until Baby Tails shows up. The internet will be exploding again.
Edit:
In the theater, when Knuckles is finished beating Sonic, this little kid yelled, "I hate you Knuckles!"
Spoilers for the end credit scene I guess
I’m still a bit worried about how they’ll portray Shadow, however.
@@horakhtythecreator6911 also, silver is best boi
Sonic *never had to deal with anyone as emotionally damaged as Shadow*.”
Based on that, I feel a bit confident they’ll get Shadow right, but I hope they understand what they are doing by bringing him in.
Really hopeful after how they fixed knuckles
Hot take here… I didn’t mind the dance scene as I enjoyed the ridiculous fun of the moment.
I’m not defending it from detractors as to each their own, just saying that I had fun with it.

For real I had fun with it too. Too many adult video game/cartoon fans have sticks up their butts and can’t seem to have fun with anything like that.
@@AceCardGaming arlo was ready to dislike it for the “funny review”
Hence why he had to focus on things nobody else would bat an eye to unless they were looking for faults
I wouldn't say he was ready to dislike it jad cat. He just fundamentally didn't agree with the premise of the movie universe.
@@awesomusprime8611 This is very accurate actually, the majority of his video was him saying these kinds of things.

Knuckles reminds me a little bit of Drax. Taking things people literally but is a wholesome character and not dumb.
For sure! Also Thor from his 2011 movie when he first came to earth.

This is the best iterations of the characters we've seen since the Adventure series and I'm here for it all.
Where as Robotnic admits his machines are everything to him, dances alone to his machines, and shouts and semi berates the only living him near him when interrupted
I think Tails will also get a bit more development in the 3rd film (if it goes ahead).
It's the simplicity that makes the movie work. They aren't trying to be complex or complicated in their messages.
I really do hope rouge shows up in the knuckles show to mess with knux. I just really want to see how that relationship will differ from the games.

In truth, "Chaos Eggman" is based on "God Robotnik" from the Fleetway Sonic the Comic series
(Just compare the two, and the similarities are obvious.)

will knuckles start picking up social ques, and learn too be more laid back? will tails gain more confidance? will sonic get taller?
i guess it depends on the time gap

Awesome video! I agree that this movie did the characters justice and I'm really loving the relationship between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles! I can't wait to see more of their relationship in the third movie!
I freaking love this movie! Mainly when the focus is on the Sonic Team (no duh). Knuckles was without a doubt my favorite with how excellent his character was being both faithful to his OG yet also something new that makes him even more memorable in my opinion!
In fact, my favorite part wasn’t the mid-credits scene, with was so YES!!!!! 🤩
It was the scene where Knuckles was reading the texts in the evil coffee shop aloud and kept saying “Dot, dot, dot…dot, dot, dot… dot, dot, dot.” I never knew someone reading the busy typing signal out loud could be so funny, and yet here it was. Utter Freaking Fantastic. 👍🏻
I can't help laughing every time I see Sonic doing the Awesome Kid meme pose on the Sonic 2 poster. He looks so cute.
A Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off film would be phenomenal. Unfortunately the Knuckles show was... Disappointing.
The duo of Sonic and Tails became fully cemented in my mind after that, and I honestly hold the scene in high regard.
i just hope that for the 3rd movie, the team will put the same effort for "that character" i have hopes and fears too
and pls sega, take notes from paramount about your characters too 🙏
While the characters were different from their game counterparts, they have the same spirit.
The whole him growing into the sonic you know is an unlikelyhood given what the filmmakers intended for his character.
@@fightingmedialounge519 I see your point and I agree with it. Sorry😅
@@windghost2 no need to apologize. I wasn't trying be dismissive or judgemental. I'm just warning people that they should temper their expectations.
This video brings a smile to my face. All the points laid out so well for these characters and easy to follow 👍👍👍
Really glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
@@Cloud-dt6xb Exactly! I want to see Tails fully grow into that hero once again!
I'd LOVE that to happen! Unfortunately, I don't see good chances for this.
@@bleakburd4965 There was a time where a Sonic movie being good seemed IMPOSSIBLE!
DUDE if the Metarex returned (and on the big screen too!) I would die, imo the Metarex are the best Sonic villains
I'm kind of iffy on Sonic but I do appreciate he has an actual arc for once.
Finally, someone who actually *understands* the Sonic trio far better than what some of the RUclips critics say!
Thank you so much, Mark.👍🏻
God i hope they handle Shadow with as much care. Maybe then Sega will finally turn down on the edge and up on the good guy aspects of shadow
I thought the human/Sonic character balance was fine. Didn’t mind the wedding @ all
Yesss. I enjoyed all of the "human" scenes just as much as the rest of the movie.
11:20 man im forreal tearing up Hard af over this song bro. it's been so0 long since i heard it and it's brining back so many memories. i didnt realize how important these games were to my childhood and seeing this movie, i swear to god they did the games justice bro
When Knuckles promised Tails vengeance in the movie for running over with a car, me and friends burst out laughing.
Wonder how Knux will get revenge on him for that!
@@jwroot probably the baseball scene.
@melindaberlinecourt7820 Ah!
"But I trusted you, you were my f-friend?"
That hurts
oh my god
the space shuttle scene from sa2 is going to be hilarious with this knuckles
I don't know what anybody's problem is honestly that dance scene made me laugh my ass off and I loved it! But this was a very solid video and I enjoyed watching it!
Dang. I actually REALLY enjoyed the dance-off, and I didn't realize that it wasn't well received lmao
Uh, I don't believe Amy and Rouge will be in it after seeing the movie 3 trailer.
