It seems they've unlocked the secret formula for success when turning games into movies; "Give the fans what they want, and they'll gladly hand over their wallets in exchange." Its revolutionary.

I knew barely nothing about Sonic before the movies, other than that he had a friend named tails and they dealt with Robotnik's (spelling?) antics together, and even that was from a cartoon I watched when I was little. The movies made me wanna check it out and I ended up really enjoying the source material. And I'm especially glad that people welcome each other with open arms, rather than gatekeeping the games because they liked them first.

What I appreciate about the film is that it is made by people who cared about the original games. There wasn’t a whole lot of explicit story in those games, but there was enough and the movies, although changing settings and adding their own story interwoven into it, still managed to hit those beats from the original games.
I remember a major criticism of the Transformers films was that nobody wants to see the humans in a movie about Transformers, but the humans are a pretty significant factor of the Transformers TV shows. The problem with those films was that the humans were terribly written. Granted, the Transformers were also pretty terribly written as well.
I like the humans in Sonic. I like that the human character is not a 10 year old kid. I like that Sonic is a 10 year old kid. I like that neither the animals nor the humans have all the answers and they learn from each other.
I feel as though the Sonic films are doing what the Avengers films did so long ago. You stand back from what is happening and think, I can’t believe this works and it makes me so happy to see it work.
Why did Assassin’s Creed suck? The writing. Why did Uncharted suck? The writing. Why does Halo TV suck? The writing. Why does Detective Pikachu work? The writing. Why does Sonic work? The writing.
It all comes down to the writing. You can’t write a good story if you don’t care about the characters or the story. If the writer doesn’t care then the audience won’t care.
I’m not saying you can’t change a character when adapting a story, but you have to change them to a different good or better written character.

The writing was too cliché and the movie felt like clips thrown together to make a movie. Also Mewtwo looked like crap. I'll never understand how do you make a movie about pokemon and you don't have the balls to adapt an actual game people liked.

@@AsecasJavi I get how my word choice is a bit weird, but I didn't say that Detective Pikachu was good. Only that it works. Cliche isn't bad. Detective Pikachu I felt was aiming to be okay. I think the majority of viewers agree that it accomplishes that. The points on the scale are more than just great and bad. There is terrible, bad, okay, good, great and a bunch of nuanced points in between. If the goal was to not be in the negative parts of the scale, then they did that. It was a simple coherent refreshing children's film that didn't speak down to kids. Not that different than any other Pokemon film. Are there great Pokemon movies? Yeah. Is Detective Pikachu on the weaker half of Pokemon movies? Arguably. Does that make Detective Pikachu bad? I'd say no.
I also believe that Sonic was made a better film because of Detective Pikachu. The production team on Sonic were defending the design, until the trailer for Detective Pikachu dropped.

Unfortunately, most studios seem to want "safe" bets and like to copy from what's already shown to be successful, pandering to the fans of the videogame. In doing so, however, studios seem to forget that not everyone in the potential audience has played or even know about the source videogame. The recent Mortal Kombat movie suffers from having far too many characters to showcase, diluting the viewer's attention and connection to each character to the point of not caring about most of them since they stick around only long enough for the heroes to show off their videogame moves/fatalities.
Assassin's Creed and Uncharted may have a small core cast of characters each, but both already have richly detailed cinematic stories spread over several sequels. That limits a writer's ability to craft a new story with those characters without needing to heavily lean on people already knowing the characters from the games. The games also have hours upon hours of character development that somehow need to condensed down to fit within a 90-minute movie.
Sonic benefits from having a small core of recognizable main characters (Sonic, Robotnik, Tails, etc.) and a very simple recurring plot (Sonic must stop Robotnik's latest evil plan). That simplicity helps give more creative freedom to explore different settings, events, and interactions while still staying true to the characters.

Even to me though I personally don't see bad CGI as a flaw, because the entire premise is they are in a virtual world. It's understandable that to us their world would be less believable than the real world and especially so for Neo who is basically hacking the virtual world with most of what he does. Totally in agreement on the third movie though, other than seeing the conclusion of everything it is just all around a slog. In the 4th matrix my god did they fuck everything up, to the extent where it feels like the person who made the 4th one hated everything about the first 3. Like the lack of agents, we see in the first 2 Matrix movies that agents are legitimately terrifying. Sonic seems to be taking cues from Marvel; lets have our movies be BASED on the thing we're adapting, not just recreations. And it works. Film is a different medium from comics, so it SHOULD be different and fit to FILM standards. Film can do things comics can't, comics can have scenes film never can. Games can have cutscenes film can never recreate, so make your own iconic moments. Sonic is about to be the ONE franchise other than Marvel to have a coherent cinematic universe. And it'll work, because they're building it from the ground up. Sonic the Hedgehog is getting it right out the gate, and DC is STILL struggling in 2022. What an embarrassment.

What sonic movies do so well is making something new out of something old , instead of recreating certain aspects from the games the same , it does it in a way it feels original / new , which is why both hardcore fans and new audiences can both enjoy . Easy to understand for new comers and still nostalgic for og fans alike . That's why sonic 2 is over 94 % score, loved by audiences.

    • @TheRibottoStudios

@@stormbringer717 EXACTLY. It's not just going "hey member this this was great right?!" nor does it go straight to team up movie either like BvS or Justice League. The mountain scene as Filmento said is STRICTLY to this movie. Sonic vs Eggman chase is strictly to Sonic 2020. Tails and Sonic and Knuckles fighting a death egg robot is REMISCENT of the games, but not exactly like it. BUT It isn't doing things QUITE like Marvel either, where each character gets a solo movie before a team up. They're introducing maybe 1 to 2 characters per movie and it's a good balance. I'm both excited and scared for Shadow, cause he's hard to get right. I just hope he's done justice.

since you're not part of the Sonic fanbase, I just want to say that this film handled the Sonic brand very well to the point where Paramount are handling the brand better then SEGA and Sonic Team, the people that own Sonic. also, as someone who is very familiar with the games, I wonder how they're going to handle Shadow, who was the black and red Sonic in the after credits. Shadow is a lot more of a darker character and the events he has been involved in has lead to the most darkest moments in Sonic history.

    • @ThePunisherSpider
      @ThePunisherSpider 2 года назад +26

The writer has said that Shadow is a very different character from Knuckles and that Sonic is going to try "show him the power of friendship" but that won't work because Shadow is too damaged for that, so Sonic will have to learn another approach. Also, the director is a huge Shadow fan, it's his favorite character in the franchise. And when the director worked in the cgi of the games, the game he worked at was...the Shadow game. In an interview he said he's very familiar with Shadow and wants to do him justice. So I have faith in the team. Let's hope Paramount doesn't do something stupid like changing the director or writer (Director has said that so far, Paramount hasn't contacted him to work on the third one)

I’m so glad to be a sonic fan these past couple of years. I’ve never had any friends who liked sonic games so sharing these with my wife and having her ask questions about it is really awesome. And like you said they offer something new, for the most part the story is the same as 2&3 in a very general sense but there’s a new spin that provides an opportunity for sonic and knuckles to see that they are the same. It’s like they did BvS right, literally having sonic and knuckles being told about their “moments” and losing everything on the same day for the same reason without really knowing each other and having that all come together in this one conflict.
And now I see sonic everywhere! And I’m really happy for all of the kids who get to see this side of the franchise and have it handled so well. These new fans aren’t going to be as alone as I was in enjoying the property because these movies have put him back in popularity.

Nice to see Robotnik use the boss mech from sonic 2 and make an instruction manual for it that looks like the actual sonic 2 instruction manual. The movie operates on power ranger logic, so don't think about it too hard, but it doesn't really take itself that seriously and it's made for kids, so no harm done. It really has been a journey leading up to this movie. Really it's been almost a decade (8 years to be exact) when it was first announced back in 2014 that a Sonic movie was in development by Sony Pictures funny enough. From the initial 2016 planned release, to the 2018 delay, to the second 2019 delay following the studio turnaround to Paramount, to the the first trailer, the redesign, the first movie release and its success to now. Arguably you could say this journey to Sonic 2 has been nearly three decades in the making if you count the original Sonic movie we were gonna get back in the early 90's from MGM known as "Sonic Wonders of the World."
It's honestly refreshing and really warms my heart to see this character praised in the public light again and get the respect he deserves after what this series, and we fans of the games have been though for the past 15 years, with the world acting as if Sonic 06 is ONLY Sonic game/Sonic related thing in existence.

And seeing them all, all of those creatures on the big screen has brought me to tears more times than I can count. I can't believe how good these movies are. They're my favorites, yes they're flawed, but when I'm running my own studio I'm going to keep making these movies so that more people can experience the beauty that these films hold. Thank you for this video, you have no idea how much this video means to me.

Using the parts from a game to get inspiration for the movie is how to please both fans and audience. Unlike how the Halo writers are doing things, as they brag about not even playing the games and just use the brand as a way to make their own Sci-Fi show.

What’s good about the movie is that they gave us a new story instead of rehashing an old one

The journey from universally reviled trailer to two beloved and commercially successfully movies has to be one of the greatest redemption stories in film history...

I loved both of these films and I really hope Jim Carry returns for the third film. I was initially a little hesitant when they first showed the trailer, but after fixing Sonic they have just blown me away with how much effort they put into these films. I'm a huge Sonic fan, since I was a kid. I'm hoping the other games I grew up loving and the ones I play today get treated like these Sonic films have been treated. They're not perfect films, but damn near perfect; perfect for me at least.

I think if he return, that would make the movie feel kind of repeatedly. We should try a different villain in Sonic 3 and back to Robotnik in sonic 4 ( maybe )

Sonic is the nondisney, disney movie we deserve.
I hope to see many more SEGA franchises hit the big screen.
In the early sonic games you could choose between playing either for the whole game which caters to different strengths and weaknesses of players. Which carried over well to the big screen. Sonic, tails and knuckles have their strengths and weaknesses over one another and can synergize to become something stronger

The only problem I has with the sonic movies was that they didn’t lean into its original game music more.
Just remixing bits of it into the themes more would’ve been cool.
There was a lot of generic action themes playing when we’re pulling from a series with some of the most fan loved soundtracks out there.

two years later: I think its amazing how you cannot deny that they actually listen to the fans and take notes from it, and well... gentlemen, I believe you must've watched the Sonic 3 trailer, no?
First they listened and changed Sonic's design, and now *remixed Greenhill Zone* and a fat Eggman after people said they were waiting for it.

I went to see this with my friends who LOVE Sonic, like they gave me a tails necklace and tails mini figure, were all 17 years old, im not big on sonic but still really enjoyed the movie, during the final act of the film some dude a couple rows down that was probably in his 20s was freaking out and having the time of his life. I guess Sonic has no bounds on how old you have to be to enjoy it.

Great video as always! I think you nailed it, using what's unique about the franchise you're making a movie about, but don't assume that everyone will automatically know the characters, the dynamics and so on. And writing an actual fun story, with actual character arcs.
I'm loving the success the Sonic movies are having, I'm a big videogame fan myself. I just hope that they will pull it off with the Bioshock adaptation, and I also hope that the rummored new Silent Hill movie is good as well :)

What's interesting is how it shows that the best of games is in one with strong gameplay identity. With Sonic you can break down the moment to moment gameplay and find things that are uniquely Sonic: Picking up rings, snowboarding sections, the threat of drowning and not being able to swim are all true to the Sonic ID. Uncharted, while a great game, is very cinematic and it's moment to moment gameplay doesn't have much to separate it from other games, especially when other games took to mimicking it's climbing system. Only things that stand out in my mind for Uncharted gameplay are moments the side characters crossing something rickety with no problem only for Nate to suddenly become 1000 pounds heavier and break it.
Something else I worry about is that game take a lot of inspiration from movies so if you were to make a Metroid movie, you are in danger of simply remaking Alien(s) much like how Uncharted borrowed liberally from Indiana Jones.
