Oh sweet baby jesus, thank you! That stupid black line was driving me nuts on my scans. Really glad I finally took 2 seconds to bother googling it, 5 min to watch a video, and 10 sec to wipe my screen and fix my problem. Wish all my fixes in life were this simple. Seriously, I don't have enough words to say thank you. I was one more scan away from going full Office Space on my printer!
I purchased a Brother Printer in 2013. SINCE DAY 1 the printer has had black STREAKS down one single side. I didn't care as I was just using it for home use, scanning documents to put into Google Drive. So today, my OCD kicked in and I said - time to fix it. Looked at 1000 BROTHER videos and NOT A SINGLE ONE mentioned that the SCANNING for the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) uses its own GLASS to scan. So I decided to see what OTHER MODELS do to clean the ADF/SCAN - and landed here. THANK YOU! Instead of concentrating the cleaning on the GLASS BED itself, I should concentrate on the SINGLE PANE GLASS that is used by the ADF (1 to 2-inch vertical glass bed). Low and behold, there was sticker residue from the time the printer shipped, ON THE GLASS. 30 seconds of scrubbing gently/removing the shipping sticker residue...Scanner 0, ME 1. THANK YOU!
Very helpful video, thank you! For anyone who is interested, I have the Epson WF-7520 which has no tabs for removing the protective clear film as is shown for the Epson model in the video. Instead, the clear film is held down by a flexible black plastic strip held in place by several snaps. It can be removed by gently prying up, starting in the center. After removing this black strip, you will find that the clear plastic is held in place by a small bit of adhesive on the right end. This can be "peeled up" by gently pulling up, then the whole clear plastic strip must be slid to the left to release it from the tabs that hold it down.
Thank you! It took less than 5 minutes to fix a problem I've been dealing with for months. I finally realized the lines only appear with the document feeder, whether I'm copying or scanning, not when I put the document on the glass. Your solution was quick and easy. Thank you so much.
Bless you my son for you have saved another land fill resident. Thanks a bunch! My 4740 was printing/scanning a perfectly straight line across everything. You allowed me to remedy situation in 30 seconds. May all your dreams come true, most appreciated!
Problem solved! Thank you so much. It's so much easier and quicker when someone who knows what they're doing shows you how, and I appreciate you taking the time to do just that. Be well everyone.
Thank you! This has been a nuisance for MONTHS and I wouldn't have figured out, or even had the courage to attempt myself, without this video. Would have been expensive and embarrassing if I took it in for repairs. Much appreciated.
I watched your video and followed your steps and the lines disappeared. Thank you so much for making this video because I would have probably went out an brought another printer. Thanks a million.
YOU ARE A LIFESAVER!!! Even though my unit is a Canon, the corresponding platen location was obvious and the fix literally took 30 seconds. This while I was on hold to Canon customer service projected wait ONE HOUR!!! Thank you so much!!!
I've been scanning and copying several thousand pages of legal documents for a legal case and I was beginning to think that I'd have to replace my Epson WF-4740 with a new one as the single vertical black line down both sides of every page looked decidedly unprofessional. After watching your video, I spent all of 2 minutes with Windex and a microfiber cloth and the vertical black line has never appeared since! Many thanks for sharing your knowledge!
OMG who knew shuch a tiny dot could cause such an issue!!! You are amazing! Thank YOU for sharing a solution to my enormous problem! You saved my day!!!
Double Bravo. I tried it on my printer (Epson Workforce WF-7710)- worked like a charm Mine doesn't have the removable film strip. I used a LED flash on the lens to spot the dirt. I found that using a paper towel left some debris so I use a tissue with 50 percent isopropyl alcohol. Thanks again- great video with perfect explanation.
Sweet! Thank you soooo much I’d already spent 20 mins trying to blow stuff out of other places didn’t think to clean that glass piece. You’re the best!
I had a lot of vertical lines that, in fact, kept moving on my copies and scans. This video really helped. Totally remove the problem. And I'm using a brothers printer MFC laser. Thank you so much for the video.
Worked like a charm; I have an Epson WP-4530. The ADF scanner produces a lovely thick line right down the side of every scan or copy. I’m a loan signing agent and that’s just bad for my business. I took a paper napkin wet it just a little with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and boom. A problem I’ve had with that scanner for about a year now, and funny enough when I looked at the lens closely I could see a big enough smudge on the left side, exactly where the line came up. Thanks for this video and Thanku everyone in the comments for saving me $70-$300, with a $1 solution!
Thank you!!! I had a huge project and this damn line was on every copy. I watched your video and it was fixed in 2 minutes! You are awesome!!!! Thank you!!!
Awesome! I removed that clear flap and sure enough it had a teeny tiny pen mark that was causing a long streak the whole length of the page. I removed it and cleaned with alcohol and it's as good as new! Thanks
very helpful... i couldn't pull that glass part out so i just wet a cloth and wiped the smudge.. came off fine.. i had a legal deadline, so i'm glad i found you!!!
@@303electronics By the way, you also showed me how to fix the output tray. The back pins on mine were broken off, tilting it downward. I managed to remove it, then superglue a small pin to one side. (Flexing with two glued pins would be too much to hope for.) It worked... for now. Any chance you have suggestions for fixing the gear mechanism that grabs paper into the ADF on an Epson 810? The printer works perfectly but for that. A design flaw, I think.
Problem solved! Thank you so much!! Problem resolved in less than a minute thanks to you! I spent so much time googling and trying to fix the problem when all I needed to do was clean the small glass section that I never really paid any attention to or any noticed before.
Thank you very much. My Epson ET 4760 scanner was outputting ADF scans with a vertical black line down the centre of each page. On the 4760, plastic trim with the attached transparent plastic is located on the underside of the scanner cover and secured with 3 Phillips head screws; after removing the 3 screws, one has to CAREFULLY press in several plastic tabs to pop off the trim piece; then it and the transparent plastic strip can be easily cleaned using glass cleaner. As noted try not to "fold, spindle or mutilate" the transparent plastic strip. When I examined it closely, above that transparent plastic piece, on the white material was an approximately 4 mm in length black line. A scan after removing the mark resulted in no vertical line on the paper. Hurrah.
I have a new Epson WF2960 with the line issue on scanned documents. I will try this. If it doesn't work I will call Epson as I have a warranty. Thank you 😊.
Thank you!! I hope you have a great day too!! With everything that's been going on in the world the past few months, I imagine you'll be helping many people now that a lot of us are working from home. I'm sure most of us don't have a maintenance contract on our machines at home.
Brilliant, my ET-4750 had a vertical line in the ADF scans and I was able to identify the right part to clean (the transparent narrow flexible plastic sheet that folds into the big white pad on the printer lid and found that it indeed had a mark there that I was able to wipe off. Thank you.
very helpful video, i wasted so much paper today running print tests to figure out what the problem was and you were right i did find a sharpie mark on the sheet feed portion of the scanner and cleaned with alcohol and like brand new, crisp clear copies. so thank you very much. I have an Epson ET-4850 and even though its not the same printer its the same concept.
You're welcome. The film may be hard to find. You may reduce some scratches by blowing the film with a hair fan, set on warm. Try not to overheat to avoid damaging it altogether.
Hi, you made a really nice and helpful video. In my case, i have an Epson ET-3850, the protective film itself has a very very small physical damage, which causes those lines in the scan. I can´t remove it by cleaning the protective film. So, do you have any idea, if this part can be bought anywhere in the net? Epson itself doesn´t seem to offer it. It´s just a cents-article! I would really appreciate your help. Thank you very much in advance!
I have a Epson V39. A long time ago it started creating these lines (darker and lighter wavy lines) on my scans. No idea how to fix it. Do you have any suggestions?
I have an Epson GT-1500 and it doesn't have the film. I tried wiping the small glass part but it doesn't help. The line has been there for years so I basically gave up using the ADF. The flat bed works great without any lines. Any suggestions?

Hi. You're welcome. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you got it fixed.
This saved me $350 in not buying a new scanner. I thought it was an issue with something internally but was a smudge on the screen- THANK YOU!!

For me it's been YEARS!! Got my printer before he uploaded this video! So glad the solution is finally online.
I just needed the direction that you pointed me in. Windex and a little wipe down saved me from tossing this printer at the wall. Thank you!

Superb advice! thanks so much.
What about the printer's adf kinda choppy when it feeds document? and the result is the letters are kinda chopped as well?
I mean the adf is not smooth when it scans a document.
Hi. It can be that the ADF rollers need to be cleaned. Usually that does the trick.

thank you so much...i did it just now and voila clean as new
That's awesome! I hate to see printers thrown away when there is things like this that are overlooked! Enjoy your holiday season!
