      Also all arenas have a minimum time of 1:20 so that's the best time you can achieve. Look up PlayDohBear they currently hold every event (race/arena) record in the game.

    The broom is basically a quantum broom.
    1. It can be in 2 states at the same time
    2. It can be entangled with another broom
    3. It can tunnel through barriers

    honestly im not surprised that more games are seeing a flag based progression system as of late. it just seems like its a good coding practice to have one objective trigger the next and so forth.

      If your aim is to create a linear quest structure in an otherwise open world its by far the easiest way to do it. Any other way requires extra scripting and QA playtesting to ensure proper functionality

      If you aim is to stop speedrunners at any cost, then yes. If your aim is to make all players have a smooth experience, absolutely not. By setting progression requirements so rigidly around specific things, you run the risk of one thing not triggering quite right softlocking the player. Leaving things a bit looser allows your game to have a little bit of flex in case things don't happen properly.

      not really. thats how a very linear game like a final fantasy or something works but its actually very restrictive for both the player who may stumble onto or be clever enough to do something unintended, and developers who may make drastic changes to the progression of the game during playtesting. a game that doesnt crash when you sequence break has more robust coding and locking the player into one experience isnt exactly peak game design. if the idea is to block glitchers i dont understand why, you dont normally waste time and resources programming irrelevant functions and bugs are an inevitability of complex programming. The downside of creating the situation where the player cannot progress at all if they are stuck on any stage of any puzzle would kill a lot of games, and fails to reward exploration in an open world.
      i personally would design a hogwarts game so that the player gains abilities from attending classes and those abilities are what unlock game progression, and otherwise have it like bully with time of day and a timetable, terms and skippable classes. vignettes would follow events and not be strictly bound to a linear order, and only primary plot points would be forced on the player

      @@papabaddad it's actually kinda the opposite. If you don't explicitly set the trigger of one event upon the completion of the previous one but on some other unrelated thing, you run a higher risk of the game's systems not working as intended.
      Accidentally walk into the wrong area? You've now skipped an entire story level/quest. As the first person to reply correctly stated, any system like this would need rigorous testing to ensure that you couldn't accidentally skip things and that everything triggers as intended.
      Whereas with a flag based system, you can guarantee that nobody will be skipping quests even if they wander into places they shouldn't and bug testing us incredibly straightforward because if something doesn't work, you immediately know it's the preceding event that likely has an issue.
      Basically, the more streamlined any piece of software is, the better it works as intended.

    Software developer here. Regarding the selection of your travel companion being skipped and choosing a default.
    It's possible the developers simply used a true/false boolean flag... (a Yes/No value) to indicate which person you chose, True for the second. The default value for these types of variables is "false" so if you never made the selection, the game thinks you chose the first. Generally the value does not matter before you make the selection so it is OK that the default value identifies one of the two characters.
    So I would say it's not a guarantee the game was coded to be flexible for sequence breaks. Speedrunners could have simply gotten lucky here.
    Now if they had the variable identify which person you chose... that type of variable would have a default of "nobody" which it is likely the game is not coded to support.and would cause problems.

      Even if there's more than two choices, it's not hard to assign a default value at the start of the game that gets changed later, or return a certain value if the "chosen partner" value is null. Older games didn't do that because error handling takes cartridge/disk space that programmers couldn't afford to use, but these days, the size of hard drives is so large that they can add these error-handlers back in.

      @@evilsheepmaster1744 True, though I would say a more likely reason is to allow developers the ability to quickly jump around in the the game to test things. Having a "default" companion will ensure they can jump right into the quest without a problem. So that is another reasonable possibility.
      Error handling typically isn't that big a deal. At its most basic the game can record the error to disk and then close or try to recover. They do not need to write an error handler for every specific type of error; a good strategy is to write ones for specific, recoverable errors, and then write one for any generic error which focuses on recording error data before ending or restarting the program.

      @@cheetahstrike2137 Yeah exactly. I think the developers are just wasting resources by trying to remove any possible exploit that doesn't affect any casual players. You would have to know exactly how the exploit works and have a high skill level to implement it so for people who don't want the glitches they don't ever have to deal with them. It's a win win win for all 3 parties involved. These devs are such party poopers lol

      I imagine building a game without bugs is the main goal at all times. A player stumbling on a game-breaking bug would ruin their experience and give a bad reputation to the developers.

    13:49 : When I reached this quest is when I realized this game would be hard to break.
    See that tower? At its right, there''s literally three "anti-cheat barriers" :
    - a death barrier : kills you when you walk on it.
    - a distance barrier : gives the countdown to your death unless you go back on track.
    - an invisible wall.
    The developers were clearly paranoid about people glitching their way through the game, lol. Usually, you'd choose a single barrier, not all three of them.
    Fun fact : I discovered a glitch right here.
    You can't use the broom around that castle. If you're far enough, you can actually mount it and the game prevents you from getting close to the castle.
    BUT if you sprint and mount at the right distance from the barrier, you actually enter the forbidden zone while mounting the broom!
    Sadly... there's yet ANOTHER barrier here, lol. It gives you a "distance barrier", as if you were too far from the quest, and it kills you if you don't dismount the broom.
    Aaaanyway, remember : there is no glitches, those are all magic spells, lol.

    IMO newer games aren't really gonna have major sequence breaks other than movement-based stuff / oob or some major oversight, because everything is so bloated with internal progression flags.
    Fun to see that you can at least skip some of it, as in the Weasely thing.

      AAA arent coded by a 16 year old japanese dude on his ti83 calculator anymore but people will find ways to break most new games. look at doom eternal for movement glitches like the yeet hook. elden ring lets you teleport.

      setting up rigid flag systems like this can actually take more time to implement, and playtest. You also open yourself up to developer oversight resulting in players being unable to progress, which is much worse than players being able to sequence break. Speedruns are free publicity for games, spending dev time to try to block speedrunners to the potential detriment of normal players is just a bad idea

    Part of the "Weasley after Class" is pretty easy to explain. And there's probably a lot of missions that can be skipped.... Many missions are locked by a "CompleteOrPostActive" check, not a "CompleteOnly" check. There's only about 50 checks for completed missions, but almost 1000 checks for post active missions.
    The WET_01 Mission (weasley after class) has a mission step called EvalStat at step 11.1 . This is done after the Cinematic begins. During the cinematic, you are given a choice for picking Natsai or Seb. The choice is saved ion the variable M_WET_Companion choice and is a 0 for Natsai and 1 for Seb. When the mission is loaded, if nothing is stored there, it is a zero. The mission locks at step 11.1 and will not continue until that check has completed.
    As for why the quest marks as completed... Mission steps are locked in place by Eval steps. Once these Evals are complete, the mission steps continue on. Once the cutscene is no longer playing, the steps continue on as normal and lock at step 11.1 EvalStat. So when you teleport out, the cutscene is no longer halting progression, EvalStat is run, see's M_WET_Companion is exactly 0, and runs the next step 12.1 SetQuestCompleteJournal, then step 12.1 to goto quest completion. There doesn't seem to be a mission step that checks for the dialoge to end or to disable start menu.
    ZRS_01 (Ronan Assignment), like most missions in the game, is already active in the game in step 0. It is locked by an Eval at step 0.2 for WET_01 to be "Complete or Post Active" Meaning that the quest has been completed, or started but not completed.
    When you start the OLI_01 mission, there are actually 2 different missions. OLI_01_Natsai and OLI_01_Seb. Both have almost identical prerequisites. They both become active once WET_01 is "Completed or Post Active", meaning that the WET_01 quest needs to only be started, but don't have to be completed. Then they both check M_WET_Companion. Then they both will run the step KillMission if the wrong companion is in M_WET_Companion, canceling the mission. Since M_WET_Companion is 0 by default, Natsai's quest continues on.
    That's a lot of text there... but that's what's happening in the mission steps. All of this is located in the PheonixShipData.sqlite file under mission steps. Hopefully some one reads this and makes use of it. :P

    I get what you’re saying but I doubt all this was put in place to deter speed runners. It’s all just decent game design. This is how to assure your game doesn’t become the next cyberpunk2077-like meme mobile

      I've got to agree with you.
      This kind of flag based progression is becoming more common because of fiasco's like Cyberpunk, there's only a certain level of "broken" you can get away with anymore as a development company before people want your head. Flag based progression definitely helps prevent things from going tits up because it streamlines the process so much, but it does create a lot of linearity. It's an "open world" game, a bit of actual freedom instead of implied freedom would have been nice.
      To be completely fair however, a lot of gamers expectations for what an open world game *should* be and what is realistically possible on a budget or with our current technological standards are two wildly different things.

    I'm not sure the restricted section should completely be seen as developer oversight, sure it's probably not what they intended but it's a interesting non-magic solution that's harder to pull off but os quicker, even if unplanned I feel it's a good addition to the world, allowing non-magical skills (gamer skill) to be used instead of the 'easy' solution.

      It’s definitely a grey area. The only reason I assume it’s an oversight is that this section is the tutorial for how to use the sneaking spell, and given how the rest of the game works, I doubt they meant to make this one tutorial optional.

    14:20 That's actually how I solved that part in the playthrough, had no idea there was a different intended direction than spamming depulso through the small hole in the wall. I mean, it felt incorrect but it worked.

    I was fighting a troll and was close to dying then I agro’d a second troll and tried to nope out, I mounted the broom and one threw a rock it hit as I mounted and got knocked into the water it left me in a state of moving like I was mounted but being able to attack. I’m assuming this is similar to the vaulting and mounting glitch just a much worse set up. It shocked me so much that I died to the trolls and couldn’t play with it. Lol

    I do like speedruns but I feel more devs don't like when their game does get broken, so they add stuff like that (I know there are devs that love them as well. Talking about the ones that don't)

      So much of this is just corporate design. Someone lays out the specific ways the game is meant to be played and if a player is able to deviate from that then it means the developers have "failed"

    I was lvl 30 bought the shop and done the quest..i shot the hanging ligjt with bombardo and it glitched my whole game...can't even load it

    The Story 100% speedrun however is just over 13 hours. This is half the time I've spent on my latest playthrough and I haven't got to Astronomy class yet

    Eh give it a few years. They'll just find ways that trick the game into thinking there's no flag. Mario kart was designed in a similar albeit way more simple fashion (requiring you to hit every checkpoint before lapping) and look at it now.

    I've completed two of the Keeper Trials so far, and I've been really enjoying the game. It's probably gonna be a solid 80/100 for me, or maybe 75/100.
    As far as breaking the game goes, I did sort of break the First Trial.
    For some reason I either never found the Ancient Magic trigger, or somehow failed to realize that going through the Archway would create an Accio Ring on the far wall.
    But, fortunately or unfortunatly, I had by that point completed the assignment that taught me Depulso.
    And, if you're standing on the floating platform, and you cast Depulso, it actually makes the floating platform move. And by slowly and carefully rotating the right way, and casting Depulso in the right directions, I was able to make the platform move to my destination.
    Of course, this was slow, and tedious, and will certainly NOT be helpful to save time for a speedrun.
    But if anyone is interested in a Minimum Accio challange - there ya go, there's a strat for you.
    I'm kinda disappointed to hear that the dungeons themselves have so much flags toprevent any kind of shortcuts or anything. It's the exact opposite of what made the BOTW Shrines so good - the sandbox freedom, and being able to find roundabout ways by just taking advantage of the game's systems - that's all gone. And for all the spell variety in the game, having the dungeons be so tight is kind of disappointing to learn about.
    I suposse it makes it even more surprising that my sequence break of the first Trial even worked, and there wasn't a closed gate on the other side.
    Anyway, this was a fun video, informative and entertaining. Thanks for making it.

    Speedrunning would give this game longevity so idk why the coding seems super against it...but also imo i think its cool...this will force the speed runners to explore different options and fine tune movement to minimize time wasted...honestly my only hate i ever had about this game was the difficulty of one of the puzzles...finally caved to a youtube tutorial after like 45 mins of resetting it

    Call me crazy, but as a speedrunner myself I would much rather play a linear game that railroads me down a strict flag-based progression system than be able to cheese the game and warp to the credits in under 5 minutes.
    Like, I speedrun because I want to play the game. As long as the movement feels good I'm happy. Just give me excuses to move. Being able to slip massive chunks of the game kinda defeats the purpose to me. The only exception would be if those massive chunks of gameplay aren't fun, but then, why would I be speedrunning that game to begin with? I could just go play something else.
    That's not to say I don't get it though. People speedrun games for different reasons. I'm sure it's very satisfying for some to crack a game wide open and solve it like a puzzle.

      It's more like game devs trying to make a good working not broken game to put in their resume and speedrunners allowing them to see where they did wrong. Ninten don't is a clear example of this, they hate any unintended use users have because it makes them look incompetent

    I wish newer games would allow sequence breaks for speedrunners but made them difficult so casual players who wanted to play it as intended wouldn't encounter them. They're just raining on our parade 😭 Also I'd love to see their reaction from glitches being found so quickly anyways 😂

    As much as I like Abyssoft analyzing and find cheaters and fakers, I always wondered if he uses these skills somewhere else. For example these Raycons, which are cheap Chinese OEM products, rebranded and resold as premium. Hint: Maybe he should look into the VPNs, Betterhelp, these stupid Scottish Lord certificates (ah wait, they got called out)... Seriously, taking a deeper look into any of these promotions RUclipsrs do, lead to some real rabbit holes. Like these sharp Japanese knifes, which are made in China and belong to ... naah, people should investigate that on their own. It is just a pity to see even the good ones fall for this promotion bullshit. :-/

    I feel personally that a lot of the fail safes are set in place for kids and from accessibility features. A lot more stuff will stop being able to be broken plot/progression wise due to (happily) more willingness from game companies wanting a bigger majority of people to play. I speedrun but i also see the importance of non-sequence breaks. If the game is popular then people will watch the speedrun eventually. Double edge sword. But once code is looked into and HL speedrun comes out of infancy a lot will change.

      Its cheaper to make a linear quest that railroads the player. Player freedom comes with lots of extra scripting and QA playtesting to ensure it doesnt break

      Lily is right. Game development is expensive and time consuming, companies that are more profit driven are going to do everything possible to streamline the process and cut down on spent resources as much as possible.
      We'll probably see a lot more of it from the AAA industry in the future as well, it's pretty much the cheapest way to get your big budget game out the door in a playable enough state to not cause riots.

    I've taken video clips of over 50 glitches In this game and I just got it two weeks ago .some were game breaking and nearly locked me out of progressing so I had to go back a few hours via an older save that was backed up but the rest was random stuff that just broke that had little to no consequences

    I dont see why devs spend so much time preventing sequence breaks in singleplayer games. I honestly think they should set their games up so you can sequence break more of the dry tutorial stuff (like in the recent pokemon games) just for speedrunners. Like I just don’t get what they stand to lose if you _can_ skip certain things

    It really rubs me the wrong way at how controlling some devs are with their single player games, it’s different to speedrunning but I was trying to get cheats to work on the Space marine game that came out ages ago so I could do the proper god mode play though with what it would actually be like to do the game as a lore accurate Space marine but even years after the game had come out the devs were still modding the games code to stop trainers from working, I could see a dev doing this for a few weeks to keep the game ending a secret but waiting dev time and money to stop people from messing with a fully single player game just boggles my mind.

    I think speedrunners are giving themselves too much credit when devs are just trying not to release a broken mess
    we got in an age that everything is released unfinished that when we see something working properly (or close enough) people take it as a direct offense, maybe in some years we will see a glitch that would turn the run upside down

    Sorry, but you're misinterpreting... Picking a default character isn't evidence of planning for sequence breaks, it's evidence of optimised(some might say lazy ) code. Someone's written something like `if(picked_char="Blah" {load char blah} else {load char other_blah}`. If there ar eonly 2 possible choices, why bother with a complex dynamic loading system?

    The glitch everything speed runs are the least interesting to me. It's cool to break the game but I like to actually see people try and complete the game as quick as possible not just clip through walls in stupid spots to get an end screen

      I like glitched runs, because you can learn something about how games are programed if you follow how the glitches work.
      That said, it's a different skill set than glitchless, which is about playing the game normally, but with super-efficient movement.

      I definitely prefer glitch ones, if anything i'm more interested in glitch than people showing off skills - but in terms of that, there's nothing more exciting than a speedrunner nailing a frame perfect glitch. It's like they've trained to become a master of reality.
