To Be Clear: Blue Heelers are the result of British settlers crossing the Blue Merle and Australian Dingo breeds, over a hundred years ago. They’re fiercely loyal to their people and are great for families - as long as they have a way to release all their energy. As a Blue Heeler dog owner, there are some things you must never do to ensure you help your dog reach their full potential, that’s why in this video, we bring to you 5 things you must never do to your Blue Heeler.

My girl has an unusual job, she goes to work with me every day. It’s been her routine since she was 8 weeks old, she gets so mad if she doesn’t get to see her co-workers and customers. She is the best assistant ever.

I have a blueheeler. We got him at 6 weeks old and as a family we all decided to call him Blue. But I personally now call him Booboo. The number 1 reason we decided to get a blue heeler was so that I can have a running/hiking partner a year after my border collie passed away. I had no idea just how energetic blueheelers were until Blue. He's hiked up to 43 miles in a week with me, easy. I was never able to do that with my other dogs. When we are not hiking, we do 3 to 5 miles daily walk on a trail close to home. Once a month we take a couple of days off to relax and do nothing. They are also loud dogs, and like to bark a lot, engaging in conversations:) He seemed to be a 1 person dog, very independent, and does not like to cuddle too much. I grab him sometimes and force a cuddle on him. He groans and roles his eyes at me, letting me know he rather just lay beside me. Or he will roll over, begging me for a body massage instead. I usually get kisses and affection from him during meal times. He hates it when I leave the house, and when I get home he is right there. He follows me everywhere, even to the bathroom. The only time he spent time with family members is when I am gone and he is getting rubs, otherwise, he will sit by the door waiting for me to get home. From my personal experience, blueheelers make a great running/hiking partner. I have a very young grandson occasionally visit me, and he wants to nip him, so I ALWAYS make sure I keep an eye on Blue, or if I am physically playing with my grandson, I have to put him in our room for an hour. So I do not think they are great around small children. No problem with my older teens. Anyways, knowing dogs have a shorter life span than humans, I dread losing him someday, because I can no longer picture my life without him:(

I rescued my blue heeler 8 years ago, or should i say, he rescued me. He's the love of my life. He is one good watch dog, barks at anything that moves, birds, squares, air planes, oh he hates flies. His best treat is a joy ride to the market.

    • @aareona4sure
      @aareona4sure Год назад +1

@@Richard-zi3dy Lol, my Booboo barks at airplanes too! He looks up and runs as he barks at it, almost as if he was chasing it away. And he hates flies too. Whenever a fly makes it inside our home, it usually ends up shewed up, dead on the floor. I agree, they are great dogs and bark at anything that moves. Boo also chases birds too, without barking at it as he does with planes. He tries to catch the birds instead. They are great for companionship:) What's your heelers name?

I adopted my heeler Kiah at 5 years old direct from a family that gave her up as they were unable to give her the time she needed. She had many bad habits. Biting, nipping, obsessively trying to get interaction from anyone and everyone. Happily and with the help of a good trainer it all worked out for me. BUT - I am retired and have 12 acres. She has room to run. And all my vacations include her. So road trips and camping are our usuals. These dogs are not to be taken lightly. Yet they are delightful in the right home.

My blue heeler is wary of strangers. So typical of the breed. He may start a fight with another male dog, but only if the dog is his size or bigger. I've never seen him get in a fight with a female dog or a small dog. For years I've taken him running through bush tracks. He's always off leash there, and I have no concerns about him biting someone in public spaces. He's always happy to see people on the track. He's not going to run up to be patted or something. His body language is "hello are you having a good time? I am." The vet once said "he's friendly on his terms". He's so smart, so loyal and loving. When you've had a blue heeler
in your life, you don't want to be without one.

I've had a blue heeler. Freddy was a rescue from a farm. He was destructive on the farm at a young age bc he was left alone and not trained. I got him when he was 6. The most loyal dog I've ever owned.
Bc Freddy wasnt trained I was limited to his activities. He didn't play well with others with the exception of young coming to the home. He was a parental figure in my home.
Great companions. I wouldn't get another tho. My life doesn't have time for the energy of a heeler anymore.
If you are thinking of getting a heeler. It's a full time job. Great truck dog for the person that has the ability to have a pet by there side.

😩😩😩😩 My Fred was 4 when I rescued him from the small farm he was terrorizing. Same reason.....he was untrained and got no human love. We had a lot of good years together. The first few weeks were rough but I earned his trust and respect quickly and he mine.....I still tear up thinking of him over 10 years later.
I got Sir Pepper now. He's 9. He was also abused, physically and left alone in a pen with a bigger dog who took his food daily. He's such a baby now, he still is fearful of flyswatters, newspapers and any stick like object in anyone's hands....he's never been touched roughly at our home tho.... It's sad to see he still carrys them memories.

My blue heeler Finnegan just turned one year. I call him my adventure pup. He is always ready for a new adventure. Fiercely loyal with a strong independent streak, he helps on our ranch with my goats. I find routine “jobs” are a must as well as spontaneous excursions. I have 4 1/2 old female named Bella. She is such a joy! She is my second Cattle Dog and I would never have anything else. They are very strong willed and stubborn, so you have to strongly remind them from time to time that you’re the Alpha. They are so fiercely loyal and protective and, as the video says, don’t like to be alone. Bella goes with me all the time except for formal occasions, and I recommend this very highly! Nice video!!

I call her my solar puppy because if the sun is shining she's working, swimming or playing with the other dogs I am a handyman so she goes to work with me. if I had a normal job I wouldn't be able to take care of her the way she needs it's constant but very rewarding.

Lola is the best friend and dog I could have ever asked for. She is 5.5 years old. All though, I did get really lucky with her as a puppy. Never destroyed anything. She is so smart and so loyal. She doesn’t leave my side when I am sleeping and if she does it’s to tell someone to go away. I swear I could leave a door open and she would never leave me. She actually does chill when I am sitting on the couch binging Nextflix she is right by my side She is addicted to her laser light (great night exercise), and she loves her “things”. She is the biggest cuddle bug there is. She literally walks herself by carrying her leash in her mouth and has since she was a pup. She listens when I tell her to wait for me or to slow down. I talk to her as if she were a human and she actually understands what I’m saying. Life with Lola is wonderful ❤

I thought, she is so hyper, I’d better start right away. She had a rough day today - cried and cried, and as soon as i figured out her heating blanket was off and turned it back on, she went right to sleep. This is a nice video to help me get to know my new friend.

We just got a 10 week old blue heeler / hanging tree cross. He's a smart little pup. It only took me 2 days to get him house trained. It only took him a day to learn the basic commands, like come, sit, calm and load up. Heelers are extremely intelligent dogs. With 7 kids, 5 of which are extremely energetic boys, he burns off his excess energy quite quickly. He is a great family dog.

My girl is 1, Miss Rango. She is extremely attached to humans and will behave perfectly if she gets to come along for adventures. Her recall and training ability are insane. Amazing listener. She is sweet as a button, gentle and great with other dogs and kids. Buttt she takes A LOT of energy and if her energy is not properly taken care of in the morning, she will get into anything she can at home. We had to bungeee our pantry closed because we’d come home to different torn into snacks every day. Overall, ball OBSESSED, loves to swim and a big cuddle bug at night. They are a lot of work, but man, they are rewarding ❤️

Thank you, perfectly said. My Red Heeler, a Service Dog named Hope, is amazing; incredibly loyal and almost scary intelligent. I've caught her acting in ways I'd expect a young human trying to pull a fast one past its parents. You are right on mark with the ball obsession. And Frisbee. Their energy is boundless, however, after getting spayed, Hope's stamina isn't as extensive as before. Although, she can still chase a ball for two hours straight.

My boy Scout is pushing 5 years in December and is high energy we go out in the mornings before I head to work and play when I get off and go on hikes. He’s very loving and fiercely loyal and protective when he doesn’t know someone but not aggressive by any means. He doesn’t jump on kids or nip at them but the total opposite with adults but it’s playful and he knows when to stop. He’s a total gentleman with women however.

My boy Scout will be 6 in November! He is seriously such an amazing dog, so incredibly smart, loving, handsome etcetera. He knows many many tricks, and his vocabulary is seriously amazing, he answers to probably at least 10 different names . He definitely nips and herds anything that he feels should be kept I'm line. There is absolutely no breaking him of it. He absolutely HATES motorcycles and he goes nuts whenever he sees or hears one. Not far behind is the vacuum, leaf blower, rake, and broom. He is seriously the BIGGEST lover. He is very gentle with children, and was very protective of our baby from the moment we brought her home from the hospital. He knows the names of all of his people and loves them fiercely. At the dog park he will go up to the humans and say hello, and if they give him attention, (and they always do because he's seriously the cutest most handsome boy ever) he will claim the human and when their dog comes around he gets growly and nippy and tells the other dog to go away. I think this is absolutely hilarious. Also at the dog park he is the absolute boss of ALL the dogs from the biggest great Dane, to the smallest chihuahua and he keeps them all in line and my God is this funny, because he only weighs 33 pounds. He will cuddle with me on the couch and I'm bed all night if Iet him. I love him so much, he's my boyfriend :) He is incredibly emotionally intelligent, and has incredible empathy. His facial expressions and eyes tell you he is constantly thinking. We run, hike, play ball, as well as I taught him to catch a frisbee from the time he was a tiny puppy. He is one of the most amazing and beautiful dogs I have ever had or been around. ❤️

If I had to do it again I would not get a heeler. It takes up a huge amount of my time but he is the coolest dog I have ever owned. He will walk me if I am having a dream or knows when my back hurts ... I have never had a dog that was so smart. I can train him a trick in a couple days. its really just about how much effort I put into it. People often thing I am really good at training , granted I have some experience but often its the dog we have not practiced he just gets it. like I said I would not get one again just make sure you know what you are doing the first two years they need a lot of foundation work to build confidence.

His intelligence is astonishing, and his desire to please me constantly is so honorable. He is a bit head strong at times when he focuses on something he wants, and will tear things up in the house (shoes, clothes, etc) if he is bored, so I have to make sure to have plenty of toys (rotated so he wont be bored with the same ones) and lots of exercise running on the farm. Our blue healer is 13. He has arthritis in a bunch of places but still wants to go for walks everymorning. If he doesn't get a walk he is a PITA! Aftetwards he loves to lay in the sun.
Now that he is an old man I have to lift him in and out of the car. He puts himself to bed around 7:30 each night and is the last one downstairs in the morning.
He was surrendered to Animal Control and a day from being euthanized when we adopted him. He was 3 months old and so uncoordinated from spending most of his time in a crate. He couldn't run without tripping on his own feet.
On the ride home he was an unholy terror in the back of my Outback. He tore up the blanket and foam pad I put down for him and he repeatedly bit at the window glass. Fortunately we had the factory pet barrier to keep in the back. Now he loves to go for rides.
Just like the Aussie band AC/DC, aka The Thunder from Down Under, he was always full throttle, so we decided to name him Thunder. His nick name is $h!+ Head because he really is one with some of the antics he's pulled.
He is my shadow and follows me everywhere. He even learned to open the bathroom door so he can "keep me company". He loves to lay on my dirty clothes while I shower and lay right behind me while I shave.
He has the most character of any dog I've had. Infact he is a character.

Your story is very similar to our last heeler. Jake was about a year old and within days of being put down at a shelter when we rescued him. He knew no commands, and was not house broken. It took some work, but he turned out to be a wonderful dog and loyal companion.
Sadly we had to put him down at age 13 due to arthritis in his back. We were able to manage it for about a year with CBD oil. We are not sure what happened, but over the course of a weekend, he went from managed pain to being unable to stand or control his bodily functions. The vet was not optimistic about a recovery due to his age and X-rays.
I didn’t think I wanted another dog, but last Thursday I made a 10 hour round trip and picked up a new Blue Heeler puppy.

I got my guy some stairs to get into my bed, when he was around 8. He can still easily jump up into my bed, but I try to make him use the stairs even when he’s not tired. Stuff like that and Cosequin has done wonders for him. He is now 11 and his hip issues don’t seem to have gotten any worse since then, but he definitely feels it at the end of a long day of running and jumping. He still thinks he’s a puppy haha. Anyway, I’d look into some stairs to try to save those hips a bit. The way I trained my guy was a few hours of having him on a leash, some food for each step, and a lot of praise when he got up the stairs. The stairs I use are easy to move around so I use them for having him get into the car too. Gotta save those hips for playtime.

We lost our 17 year old heeler in March last year due to her having fits. The day she was put down was the day our new pup heeler pup was born. We had our new pup house trained within about a week. The best thing to do is have a dog door and show then how to go outside as this makes house training easy. Both of our dogs were never interested in playing fetch or running around. I can sit on the couch for hours and they will sit beside me and sleep while laying their head on my knee. Great dogs but you have to make sure they know they are not the top dog, make sure you give them good quality food, low in crude fat and protein and they will live a long and happy life.

The biggest thing you have to learn is these dogs have to work both mind and body. I’m retired and have plenty of time to enjoy this. He can run short blasts of up to 24 mph. Is faster than any squirrel and most rabbits. He jumps almost six foot from flat foot and over eight foot from a full run. I have always enjoyed a lab or a mutt from the local pound and care for all my dogs over the years. I won’t be getting another heeler as much as I enjoy this one . These dogs only work if you can and will spend time learning about the breed. They are an amazing dog.

My boy just turned 9 he was really up and go type personally but over time and some health issues he has slowed down, even so keeping his mind busy is the most important thing for him I believe. He’s never peed in the house or don’t ante info wrong really, hands down the best dog I’ve ever owned. I got him when he was two and he took too me rite away since then it’s just me and him vs the world. His favorite thing too do is go fishing with me, he will stand in the water all night and wait for a fish too bump into him! He’s had luck caught 3 in his life lol he also I fearless besides gunshots and fire works. Will put a 150lb Rot in his place but summits too a little 3 lb dog. So I’m short, keep them busy is a must not an inside only type dog. And yes unfortunately he goes too the vet often with issues. Most being hard too find issues such as an inflamed liver or broken nails seem common with him being so active. One more thing, as tough as they are these dogs are really big babies when it comes too being hurt and he’s trained too sit in a certain part of the house and let me know when he’s hurt. Very smart pals. Also very very defensive at home or in the car. Food for thought If your on the fence about getting a heeler.

He doesn't know his own strength and bites really hard! Trying to discourage this habit without being mean or negative to the pup is a true challenge! I've had dogs my whole life..mostly German Shepards, love em. Rebel passed 2yrs ago. I'm retiring in the fall, and going on the road this fall, and getting a Heeler cuz room is limited. What I want to know is, I've seen them long/short legs, is one more prone to joint problems? And what are the pros/cons of male vs female, and red vs blue? Thanks for any input.

    • @thecagdot
      @thecagdot  Год назад

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your loss of Rebel. It sounds like you have a lot of love to give to a new dog, and a Heeler can be a great choice for someone who is on the go.
As for your question about Heelers, both long-legged and short-legged Heelers can be prone to joint problems, such as hip dysplasia, which is a common condition in many breeds of dogs. However, reputable breeders will perform health screenings on their breeding stock to minimize the likelihood of passing on genetic predispositions to joint issues.
Regarding the pros and cons of male vs female Heelers, it's important to note that each dog, regardless of gender, will have its own unique personality and temperament. However, some general differences between male and female dogs can include:
Males may be more prone to marking their territory with urine, and can sometimes be more dominant and territorial than females.
Females may be more prone to mood swings and may be more protective of their owners and home.
Ultimately, choosing a male or female Heeler will come down to your personal preference and the individual dog's temperament.
As for the red vs blue coat color, there is no significant difference in temperament or health between the two. However, it's worth noting that some people believe that blue Heelers may be more prone to deafness than red Heelers. This is because the gene responsible for producing the blue coat color is linked to a higher incidence of deafness in some breeds. However, again, reputable breeders will perform health screenings on their breeding stock to minimize the likelihood of passing on genetic predispositions to deafness.
I hope this information helps you make an informed decision when selecting your new Heeler companion. Good luck with your search!

9 month old Male, 54LBS! Actually a Red Healer.. with a Bow Tie on his Chest.. His Name is Tuxedo/Tux. His Father was a Blue Healer about 70 Lbs, Mom a Red Healer about 45 Lbs. We negotiated Tux's nipping since a puppy.. It was a big, long drawn out deal. Just never worked.. OCD maybe.. it's Hardwired. We settled on light Teeth play with me only. If he get's too tough, I pinch him back.. He constantly tests me, and respects an occaasional Kick in the ass, or a swat with a stick. Doesn't hurt.. just demeaning, he get's it. Guests are totally OFF limits with teeth play. His Nails are My Problem. . Best deal I could work.. his teeth are his hands. He hasn't broken the skin in a Long time.. so he's very very careful. It works.. But Not Optimal. He really understands, and is somewhat reasonable. He likes to fetch, for maybe 3 times, brings it almost back to me. He understands when I have to leave for a few hours and doesn't rush the door. For a while he'd fetch his Leash,. As a Puppy, he was a bit of a howler.. I howled with him, but eventually he became a very expressive Barker.. Very Sharp, Tones, Rhythmical, and Very Loud. He tries to communiocate with Dogs a few blocks away..

I have an 8 year old female blue, she's the 3rd heeler I've owned, I love the breed. Unfortunately she will b the last heeler I'll have only because I'm getting old and can't keep up anymore. My question is what do u go to after owning a heeler, what could ever compare?

I do have a blue healer and I do have a question about her I've had over seven years. She is so I don't know how to describe it but she's gotta be through the door first to the point where she will knock me over. Also when I open been her crate she just darts out and she just gotta check out everything and it's just a lot and I'm wondering if there's anyway to curb that behavior.

I got a blue healer and she is very destructive. I have had them in the past and haven’t had this issue. And when I try to play with her she gets scared sometimes. Idk what to do.
