Cattle dogs are hands down the best dogs in the world!
I love it how the cattle dogs know when they are beaten. Like when they are on the slippery table at the vets. And the thermometer goes in where no self respecting cattle dogs wants anything to go. I sure miss my old red. He died 16 years ago but I miss him every day.
I know they get such defeated looks when they have to go through all the things they really don't want to lol....They really do take a piece of us when they leave don't they? I said goodbye to two recently one being one of my heelers and I still feel shattered without them and miss them every day. 💙
They love to throw you a good "stink eye" at you too. Know that you will pay for your sins when you get home 🤣🤣
That's called sadism. Actually, it's a fetishism type action more common in American ranchers.
You have to get another one man.. I had a little blue heeler my neighbor murdered it. Then laughed at me about it.. that b**** just don't know how close she was... To make a long story short I was f******losing it.. one of my friends was like hey cant you get another dog.. I thought about it for a week while I was ranting about the neighbor and terrorizing them with the grinder it 4 in the 5 in the morning... And I found my red. At an animal shelter.
They had been chasing him for over a year. He had been living up in the forest in New Mexico at lake abiquiu.. heavily wooded heavily populated with predators and elk and everything else. He had got into it with some coyotes or wolves or something. But he just could not function in the dog jail. He said he snapped one day and just started attacking every dog and everybody.. because they had been picking on him. He was scheduled to be put down.. I was like f*** that s*** I'm taking that dog right now you're not putting him down. But he's vicious he's completely psychotic.. I said bitch,so am I and I'm taking that dog I don't care what you people say.. finally they were like fu#k u! you crazy bastard just take that crazy dog and leave. Threw it in my truck. As I filled out in reverse I could hear them saying he's going to bite you.. which he did for three months. I've had him for like 4 years travels with me everywhere he loves everybody except for my brother. He still hates coyotes pitbulls and Rottweilers and will attack any dog bigger.. but he's a badass little bastard and my best friend. I still think of Joe see all the time as I'm starting at that f****** b**** next door
As I Ozzie ACD owner of many years this is one of the best "how to" on basic grooming & care of heelers that I've seen. Practical, well thought out and caring. You obviously love your Blueys & they you. Best of luck in the future ❤️
Thank you so much! 💙💙💙
I revisit this video whenever it's home grooming time.😊
My girl is finally getting used to me trimming her nails and the best part is she think brushing her teeth afterwards is her treat! We started working on this during covid so it took us 3 years to get here. But worth it! She’ll be seven in a few months
LOVE THESE BABIES!!!! POOR SULLY, CAN MR MAN GET A BREAK!!! SALLY FITS RIGHT IN THERE!!! ADORABLE AS ALWAYS!!!!🙏🐕🐕🐕🐕🙏❤️🐕🐕🐕🐕❤️💙💙💙💙🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
I thought I was the only one with a dog that grows crazy nails. I swear we walk 8 miles a day and hike in the season. No matter what she grows talons
Crazy isn't it? I swear Clea's nails can sometimes get that way in less than 4 weeks.
@@TheHeelerMama yup! My other dog never needs trimmings maybe a yearly thing at most. But my girl grows em like a mad man. It's wild.
I wish my boy would stay still like that during bath time and grooming. He makes it so challenging.
Very thankful all mine only gave me a little guff as they were learning the grooming process.
Most helpful video ever, thank you!! 🐾💕
love the home run slides on the carpet or outside dirt after a bath!!!
Thanks for the info!!
Very helpful!!
I plan on getting about one or two blue heelers!!
All videos are very useful!!💯💯💯
Your little one looks like my Lupe. I lost her last summer. Now we got a red one. I just love heelers! They are the best dog ever!
Our heeler mix loves getting his face washed just a warm damp cloth but seems to enjoy it since he sits still and lets it happen almost daily
Such sweet pups 🐶 mines a healer and she’s so sweet and loving.
I will be a fur momma in September. I'm very nervous, never owned cattle dog. Your videos make me feel so much better you don't know how much it helps.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear they are helping. Get the nerves out now they will sense it! 😉
Thank you for this video! I just adopted a (best guess) cattle dog mix puppy today, and I'm trying to start my research early so that when he's ready for grooming I'll be prepared. I've never had a dog with this particular fur type before, so I appreciate you sharing your experience with us.
I Love my cattle dog!
❤ This was so helpful being a new Heeler mommy. Thank you ❤️
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative, thank you!
No problem. 😊
Great video. My Red girl Maggie sheds constantly. It's a daily battle, but she's healthy and full of love. I couldn't ask for more.
My Red is shedding crazily right now. I started furminating several times a week. It's amazing how much comes off. He loves it. And with regards to shaving. In March he had an ultrasound and the vet shaved him....he's yet to grow completely in; at this point I'm considering shaping it like a heart! But that undercoat is like baby hair. LOL
I really like to use a flea comb as it does get down to the under coat and also if your dog does by chance have any fleas or tics you may find them in the process. Also love this breed as my Red Heeler simply does not shed hardly at all. Go a week and run a comb through him and only get a few hairs. My Blue mix sheds some because she has Colie in the mix. I like to use a grinder on the nails and they seem to love it a lot over clipping. Got to love this bread!!! Thanks
Don't know how I missed this one...but, YAY! My heeler hates having her paws touched/handled. And, of course her nails need trimming every 2-3 weeks it seems. She also won't let me get a toothbrush anywhere near her mouth. Thx again for this video. I'll look for Sully ' s grooming sessions.
Great Stuff! And Boots Thanks you as well. The after bath floor slide must be a heeler thing LOL.
Thank you! Hi Boots!! Yeah they all do it lol like no must smell like dog again 😁
Great, useful video. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
this video is so helpful. we've had a heeler mix for almost 2 years now but we were definitely led astray with what a good brush for them is, so this was great for what brushes to get!
Glad it was helpful! 😊
i love how i already did the bathing techniques when i got max. i learned it in my pre vet tech class. GO NEW MARKET SKILLS CENTER!
I also bathe my cattle dog about 3 times a year (especially when she’s blowing her coat) or when she rolls in something really dirty. She loves playing in the water, which helps knock some of the dirt off between washes. They’re really low maintenance dogs as far as their coats go.
You are a great heeler mama!!
Thank you 💙
thank you!!!!
Welcome! 😊
My dog came with his vet history. So many visits for dry skin. He had so much dandruff when we would pet him. When he was handed to us his owners told us he had a grooming appointment that week and did we want to keep it. Haha. His fur was so different then it is 9 months later. We didn’t think he was a cattle dog because he had silky fur. Now we do a sniff test. A boar hair brush is a great bath until he smells. Thanks again for a place to talk and listen about land sharks. :)
No problem :)
Thanks for the info! Our blue heeler is almost 5 months and wish I had watched this when she was 8 weeks. We previously had an Aussie for 16 years and he was soooo Mello compared to our blue heeler. I just found out about the not bathing them that often which is the only thing I didn't know. I'm also going to purchase the fulminator too, I've seen them at the stores and didn't know which one to get. Thanks!!!!
Welcome, glad it was helpful! Make sure you get the Furminator for short hair I think I forgot to mention that in the vid. 😊
Thank you for the grooming tips. Great modelling girls you both look beautiful
Look at that baby 🥹💗
One of the things that surprised me about my first cattle dog mix was that his coat was more waterproof than the lab mix I had previously! Like coated with carnauba wax!
Also surprising to have mostly black nails and pads on mostly white feet! His pads grow so hard, like bristles. I kept putting balm or moisturizer on it but it did nothing.
Also the poop perfume...
Dead fish is a favorite for them to roll in, since we have a pond. The one that got him banned from the house for a while was the human feces at the park.
Be vigilant, they are capable of amazing feats even if they are on a leash!
Human feces? Like, I mean, how? lol Give me dead fish or anything else but that lol
This helped a lot ! I was worried I was taking my cattle dog in too much because I take her whenever I take my Pomeranian mix every 2/3 months for grooming since he grows hair fast and get knots. The internet said you shouldn’t bathe them too often, only like 2x a year which I got scared cause she’s only a year and a half and she’s gotten groomed at least 6 times now
I know many sites that just say once or twice a year as well. As long as the coat isn't dry and it's healthy looking, you are good. 😊
I never gave my cattle dog a bath, every other day in the summer he'll swim a couple miles a day, great way to wear him out also without the shock of running. In the winter he'll go roll in the snow.
I use non scented wipes sometimes like baby wipes but non-senty to wipe my dog's face sweet
Wow your dog is really obedient. I had the same dog but he is really naughty when it comes to shower.
I'm extremely grateful all of them do so well.
We just picked up our blue a week ago, and boy what a spitfire she is at 2mos. We have 2 Saints males and they are in their twilight years. Right now we are trying to keep her from just latching on to them all the time. I heard until they are 3yrs you are in what’s called the baby raptor phase. And boy ever. We have chew toys and things, but trying to calm her from beating up my two old guys has been changing sometimes. She has gotten better with them. So, the book we had with the Saints lol has been thrown out and what a difference. The grooming tips are extremely helpful! I think I’m going to make a calendar just for her. We love our little spitfire Ava and are looking forward to grow together and have many happy memories.
Oh, I also watched one of your videos about how you want a farm and lots of chickens. That made me laugh for hours. My wife is the same, and every time we go to a tractor supply store during baby chicken season she turns into a gushy mess. 😂
Tractor supply taunts me with their feathered cuteness and the other farm store! They are literally 2 minutes from my house and within 5 minutes of my house are people with their mini hobby chicken farms and one more minute actual farms. Drives me insane my house isn't zoned for chickens and I have a neighbor I know would get me in trouble if I snuck them in lol. Maybe someday if not I'm okay with it. But yes, cattle dogs have a raptor puppy phase, usually it's 2 years but some do take it all the way to the 3 year mark lol. Very high energy and can be very rude puppies to senior dogs. Sully is starting to bully our senior girl. Thankfully she still tells him off for it but we do have to step in more now. Thank you for watching and I'm sure Ava is going to frustrate and amaze you for many years to come. ❤😉 They are intense but the relationship they have with you is worth all of it.
my heeler loves baths but not the blow dryer Thanks for this video
You’re welcome 😊
II bathe them when they stink. Our male Blue Heeler Sometime smells like he’s been rolling in something dead, lol. So he definitely gets a bath then. Our little lady Blue doesn’t get quite as nasty-smelling. I am a vet tech and my Blue Heelers Usually get brushed pretty often and bathed about 3 to 4 times a year. Good video. Well done.
Thank you. 😊
4 mo. Zoro Here.. Hey, I think I found another "Tool" in the box to train against Biting (probably my biggest issue so far). He loves to play, but gets carried away and forgets.. When he forgets and gets "Bitey", I put his Tail in his mouth, often making him bite his tail! The look on his face when that happens is truly a learning moment for him. He stops biting me (for a little while anyway)! He's usually at my feet, and I forget he's there sometimes. I stepped on him a couple days ago! He was limping.. I felt Soo Bad.. He was obviously kind of angry with me.. but we made up.. his limp is nearly gone now. I don't know anything about Dingos.. but Zoro clearly has characteristics of a wild animal (Fox maybe?). He fits thru amazingly narrow door openings.. his skeleton is less "Stiff" than a dog.. he's hard to grab. Most feral animals are much smarter.. like wild turkeys are whereas Butterball turkeys will drown in a rain storm or get lost in a fence corner.
Haha. Poop Perfume! You are NOT LYING. My girl, one day, decided she would roll around in a HUGE pile of poop. I didn't notice right away, then I got the whiff. and began investigating. Luckily, I caught her before she had the chance to jump on my bed. I took her outside and cleaned her up at midnight. So far she has done that 3 times and each time was met with a bath. She hasn't done it in a while, but I now inspect her whenever she comes in the house..
My biggest fear is them bolting to the bed when those moments happen lol Thankfully the bed is safe. The couch not so much lol.
This was a very informative video. I tried to brush our pup today but she didn’t like the brush too much. I’ll just brush her a little everyday and maybe she’ll start getting used to it..💖
Yes, small sessions help until they are use to it. Lots of praise and talking to them during it to has always helped me even with my clients pups and when that doesn't work brush a little and sneak them a tiny treat lol 😉
@@living2day617 do you think you could still groom her with one of the nylon type muzzles?
Poop Perfume 🤣🤣🤣 Mine loves it, ugh! Thank you for the tips.
Welcome! 😁
How did you train her to stand still for a bath like that? My boy hates baths.
Also my ACD mix is the first working dog ive owned naturally I was very nervous.
There is a lot of "dont get an ACD they are the worst" online. Your videos have been super helpful and really put my mind at ease. My boy is just the sweetest, ACDs are really great!
You put your hand on their lower belly so if they try to sit you just lift them back up. It's what groomers do to keep the dog standing and eventually they just know if I sit she's just going to put me in standing position again. After a few times they pick up on what I expect during a groom. I'm glad the videos are helping. I know many hate the breed and say they are the worst but I think that is mainly people who don't give them what they need and then don't know what to do when behavior issues start. Best dogs in the world IMO obviously lol 😊
Yesss I hate when people shave dogs for the aesthetic value 🙄 definitely need to get a good undercoat brush for our Chief. And he hates the dryer so as soon as he’s towel dried he get the zoomies and has to roll on the carpet / couch 😂😂 glad to see you well Alex!! 💜
I lost many clients when I refused to shave their huskies etc. It would drive me nuts, especially when I knew they would go to someone who would do it. I got very lucky all my kids did really well for grooming. Kage would cry and fight to get into the tub and scream during nail trims but he eventually got it. Must be a fluffy dog thing. All the huskies I bathed would scream too, like no water is touching me lol
My healer washing routine is :- 1) grab garden hose. 2) watch dog bolt and try to find him
Oh God the poop perfume lol. I thought my fur baby was just weird lol
I’m learning more about the breed thanks to your videos, our boy loves rolling in dry cow poop 😬 he loves his farm but man why does he do that? 😂
Ours is opossum and groundhog poop. They girls LOVE it! lol I know they say it's to mask their own scent like from predators from when they were wild but I'm like, what predators?! The hawks flying over head? lol There is nothing in our yard you need to be that protected from. My girls always look so proud too like, look now they won't fine me mama I smell of the opossum lol
Alex is the bomb 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Why thank you!

I have a 9 week old Texas heeler who is the joy of my life right now, what a sweetie! I've been working with her to get her used to being touched on her ears, paws, mouth, etc and she handles it all quite well. Shortly after she came to me she rolled in yucky so I gave her a bath. Since then she has been scratching up a storm and I don't know if it's from the bath (dry or irritated skin) or if it's from a food change (allergy). Any tricks on being able to tell? This video was great, I will be using your techniques!
Sometimes if you don't rinse the soap out all the way that can cause some irritation so a quick way would be just to give her a bath with just water and if she improves you got your answer. Also could itch if you are having weather changes. When it comes to the food keep with the same foods and if you give her something different just note the changes. I've even kept a notepad as a mini dog journal sometimes just to help determine the cause.
Toothbrush for animal! Wow!😂😂
Less expensive than having to do a dental cleaning.
Beautiful HEELER
Thank you.
Thank you all that information its great, learning lots.
My red cattle pup 4months old, continues to bite grab the blue cattle dogs collar she's 5yrs old when playing.
We've already replaced the collar twice.
Any tips on trying to stop him from grabbing and biting her collar. He does have heaps of chew toys etc
Advice would be greatly appreciated 😁
I enjoy all you videos thank you
Thank you! Regarding the collar. Gypsy did this to Clea for almost a year, sometimes I would pull her off and tell her no, sometimes give her a time out, and use the "leave it" command. She was very stubborn about that and it took forever for her to stop. Didn't help that Clea just let her. We went through 3 collars before she got it. It drove me nuts for the longest time. Hoping your pup figures it out sooner.
@@TheHeelerMama
Thank you so much for the quick reply and your tips, kind of relieved that its not just my dog doing this lol yes say leave it, n it I'll do the time out thing and give that a try, appreciate your time and assistance.
Zorro is red cattle dog 4momths and Cookie is 5yrs
I really like watching you videos your dogs seem so well behaved
Thank you 😁👍
@@carolboo7461 No problem! Hope one of those clicks for Zorro. I really was at my wits end with that with Gypsy until it clicked. And thank you, I put in a lot of time trying to get them to this point lol and thank you for watching!
Fragrance free shampoo would be best for the dog and humans!
Wow you can brush there teeth. Lol my tow gang up on me when I'm caring for either one.
I adopted a red heeler about a month ago. She had a *really* hard life and I think it profoundly affected her coat. Her patchy thin nearly pure white coat has given way to a beautiful deep red speckle. She's not yet grown out new guard hairs yet. It's going down with time, but she generates a LOT of wax in her coat. When I adopted her I assumed she'd just never been bathed in her life, but it came back a week later, just not rancid or dirty this time. Is that a kind of characteristic of ACDs, or do you think it'll get better as her body fully recovers?
ACDs coats are not suppose to be waxy. There are a few reasons that could cause this. Lack of proper nutrition, allergies, improper grooming, medical things like fungal infections. If she's had a hard life I would give it a few months and see how her coat goes. If she's cleared for any medical reasons it's most likely just a recovery period. Only one of my ACDs gets a waxy coat once in a while and it's due to her allergies. So Benadryl and extra snacks like fish chews help her with that. My bet would be that she was missing something in her diet and just not properly groomed so now that she's getting that and your seeing improvement that's a step in the right direction. Give her time to heal, and if it's still going on when she's fully recovered look at what might be triggering it.
My boy sometimes gets a bit of a fray or hangnail on a claw, and just like human hangnails it might get worse if I don't take care of it right away. He hates the Dremel, so I was wondering what would be the best alternate method to deal with that sort of thing.
If part of the nail breaks off like that and if he won't let you sand it the only thing to really do is trim it the best you can and then clean it with warm water and apply septic powder if needed. Then monitor the nail to make sure there is no bleeding or infection the next few days and make sure it's healing properly. There is no other alternative really. Lucien would get those a lot but loved getting groomed even the dremel lol Once he snapped an entire nail of his in half and then I had to go to the vet for that one. It's good that you get them off as soon as you see them.
How could I miss this? My jaw dropped when you did the nail clipping. How do you know that you do not cut too far? I do as you said, I clip very carefully until I see the dot and getting smaller slices off seems to not irritate her so much as if I would cut a larger, so we stick to that. But it baffles me how quick you clipped without seeing the underside of that nail 😂
Lou Lou comes with me to the stable and she loves to roll in a lot of stuff I dont even want to know. Since she sleeps in the bed I dont want her to smell or have anyting on her of course so I adjust my bathing around the smell/ visual thing. But I must also say that sometimes its enough to brush it off, they have awesome fur conserning stickiness of dirt. I also use a furminator and a zoom groom afterwards.
😂 Years of practice on the nails 😂 That was actually slow compared to what I use to do. If they are on my table I would go a bit faster. We were never taught the dot trick until years later and I was like, well shoot that would've caused me way less anxiety if known sooner lol.
@@TheHeelerMama all my dogs were little hysteric when it came to nail trimming, also Lou Lou.
I am telling you from my part even with the dot knowledge not less anxiety at all 🤣❤
@@pitshblack1047 😂 Honestly sometimes I don't know how I do it where they are not demon spawn during it. We all makes jokes at this point it must be something in my aura.
YOU ARE PICKING UP THE PUP FROM THE FAMILY I GOT MY HEELER FROM! If theres any way to stay in contact (theyd be half siblings, they have the same mama, Lila) it would be wonderful!
She just texted me a friend wants to keep tabs on the siblings it must be you! lol That is totally fine. My email and instagram all the above. You will see him a lot on here.
She just told me your baby is Poppy! 💙 Do you have an instagram but yes keeping in touch in fine with me! 😁
Can you make a video on how you deal with all their hair in your house. It’s a struggle with mine🥺❤️
I can add it to the list of vids but mainly I sweep and vacuum every two days and brush them. That's still not enough (my one has a thyroid problem so she sheds constantly) but that's how I deal with it. Just constant cleaning.
I take my BH to the groomers . I bumped up her appointments to every 5 weeks because she sleeps in my bed and I live on a 8 mile dirt road on 10 acres . is that too much ? Someone abandoned her on my road last summer. Vet told me she was 2 or 2 in a half 6 months ago. I'm about to start training classes with her next week as she tends to listen when she feels like it 🙄😂 other than that she's a great dog. My boarder collie Ty loves her. I named her Trouble.
Trouble is a cute name and very fitting for a heeler lol. When I ran my shop from home I would groom my original crew every 6 weeks for a while there and they did fine. They didn't need it I just wanted them all pretty lol. Just keep an eye on her coat. If it's too dry, flaking skin, or looking unhealthy I would cut back. Your groomer should warn you too if she sees anything starting. I use to groom another heeler that came in every 7-8 weeks because she was always getting into so much mud etc and she never had a problem either.
@@TheHeelerMama thank you . Yeah I live in northern California . Lots of dirt in the on 10 acres. I fostered her while I waited for someone to claim her. Thank God nobody did. BH are definitely special dogs . Thank you for all your videos . I watch them a lot. Blessings to you and your pups💕
And I keep the house warm so what the towel does not get drys up brush daily
Poo Poo Perfume. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!
2x a year on our ACDs because they are not working pooches but still like to roll in dirt.
Can you tell me what the blue comb brush is called. Would like to find one for my heeler. She looks just like your heeler. Beautiful dogs they have a wonderful mommy ❤
It's the Furminator. That blue one was the small version and it's an older version of it. The medium sized one that is orange for short hair breeds is the newer version. I have a link to it in the description. And thank you ❤😊
@@TheHeelerMama OK thanks so very much ❤ 😊
How did you get your heeler to stop nipping at your hand throughout the grooming? I’ve got a 6 mo old heeler and she can nip very quickly. We are trying to teach her no but it’s so reactive for her to nip.
I partially cheat because I have a grooming table with the lead that helps me get them use to it lol, but I also use a lead to help guide their head during baths and also have used treats or lick mats to distract them until they learn how to do it properly. I take pauses if they do snap and try to calm them down and there are ways to hold their head away too so you have more control.
Any ideas for flea infestation? We even have a seresto collar on her and she's still keeping her friends
I love using K9 Advantix. It's a topical one not a collar. I've never been a fan of the collars. But if they are really present it's time for a major deep clean in the house. Adams shampoo and sprays I use to use while having my grooming shop in my house and they worked really well for me if I ever saw the little buggers invading lol. Wash everything you can even her bed and might need to treat the yard. If you use the Adams shampoo I would wait a couple days before applying the flea collar or topical treatment, and you want to make sure you do at least 4 treatments (monthly) if you go the topical route that way you insure you kill the life cycles of all the fleas.
Thank you for this very informative video - when I look up furminator, there is a short hair and a long hair. Which one do you recommend for cattledogs? thank you!
You want the short hair one size medium. Orange color. Your welcome and thank you for watching. 😁
@@TheHeelerMama thank you so much!! I'll go order one right away 😁❤️
I have a question what can I use to regrow some thinning areas on there fur
Hard for me to recommend something when I don't know the cause of it. But there are numerous products out there you can try. I personally never have had to use any. If your pup is having hair loss I would find out why that is first. Could be fleas, allergies, mites but I would find out first before trying any supplements or ointments.
I appreciate it I was wondering it was the food he was eating
@@chapothebluehuleer4202 No problem. That could be a possibility for sure. It's just pin pointing what ingredient it might be.
my mini blue heeler Afina does good with bath time but I have to muzzle her to be able to brush her.
Some pups will need that. Better to muzzle than to get injured. :)
@@TheHeelerMama you talk about blue towels for blue heelers my pups name Afina means blueberry lol
And I'm wanting to go to the PCC health store and I'm going to get some non-scented dog or not dog shampoo but shampoo nonsense shampoo that I can use and she can use my dog
What if your cattle dog is scared of being groomed? Like is aggressive about it? I have a 10-month-old
You can distract them with lick mats or cookies as you are trying to get them use it. If they are too aggressive muzzle training but you have to go slow and stay positive during all of it while they are getting use to everything. If it's nail trims have someone distract with a lick mat and just try one nail and praise them if they do well during it. This vid shows how I introduce them to grooming it's start around the 6 minute mark ruclips.net/video/cUEOwfElvDw/видео.html
Yup i wash my healer every few months or so and with the poop perfume.. i wash immediately ! he have come back with cat shite smeared all over him more then once lol
What one would you recommend the most if you can't buy all of them?
For the brush the Furminator medium short hair and the Miller Forge for a nail clipper. Just have to be extra careful if trimming a puppies nails that why I would get the smaller ones as well but you can do it with those if careful.
If your Heeler is outside alot, they do not like any kind of Scent ( perfumey soap, etc.) on their coats,as other animals will smell them.
Me I wash mine once every 2 to 3 weeks so once a month more or less
Sometimes you have to with them 😆
my blue heeler just got spayed, she can’t stand straight, can’t walk very well, and is weak. She also doesn’t want to eat or drink, Any tips? She’s been crying a lot 😕
Call your vet ?
I would call the vet. Not eating or drinking after a spay is not good. The first day after they might not eat or drink much but they should be by the second day. Call the vet.
@@living2day617 I'm so sorry that happened to your baby. Gypsy had swelling and they rushed us in to check on her. 100% agree if the vet isn't concerned go elsewhere asap.
Why only a few times a year? We bathe ours about once a week whenever he starts to stink.
Because overbathing your pup can cause irritations like dry skin. Bathing too often strips the natural oils and that can cause the coat to not be as healthy as well.
My boyfriend said he want to use Johnson to Johnson baby no tear shampoo and I'm telling him it won't work the best thing for your dog is a unscented type of body wash that comes from the natural the PCC health store

I made the mistake of shaving down my cattles coat at so misguidance from someone i trusted, nothing online really helps me in figuring out what to expect of her coat..im hoping it will regrow, i'm worried i ruined her coat permanently but if her fur regrows and all i need to worry about is extra brushing then i am okay..but idk what to look out for if it doesnt grow in properly. She's a collie mix and had a hug mane, which is what i mostly lengthened down but i am very worried. She's never been shaved down prior, so this was a 1 time only thing for sure..im going to get brushes but ims cared i did something that'd like..harm her in some way
im making a schedule for her rn, grooming wise so i hope i can undo some harm in the longrun :(
For starters breathe. ❤ Things happen. Good news is usually damage will happen to the coat when this is done numerous times to a dog with a double layer coat. I'm not sure how far down she was shaved or how fuffy she is since she's a mix but if an inch or more was left you will be fine. Just work on brushing and if you are in warmer weather at all (I don't know where you live) just make sure she stays cool and in the shade. Sometimes dog with double layer coats need shaving for medical or for matting, but in general yes don't shave them. It's very rare it completely damages the coat just by doing it once. I had to shave an entire chow once due to a skin condition to help treat the dog and his coat came back just as beautiful after he was all healed up. Since your pup is longer haired make sure any brushes you get are for long haired pups there is a difference in brushes. Hope that helps and puts you at ease a bit. ❤😊
“Please don’t shave your cattle dog”
Omg I almost fell over. Thanks for the info. The black nails annoy my vet. We are gonna try a grinder.
I use to hate black nails too but you start to get the hang of it after doing it for so long. Good luck on the grinder!
I am afraid to bathe mine because last time she got all these eruptions all down her back and she suffered for 2 weeks. What could have caused it?
I'm not sure what you mean by eruptions. Do you mean a rash or boils? Was the water too hot? They shouldn't be having a reaction to a luke warm bath and proper shampoo.
@@TheHeelerMama they looked liked gooey eruptions that turned into hard scabs by the end. I could peel them off, leaving hairless patches but the skin healed and by now her fur grew back already.
@@alvarorivas9896 Are you sure they weren't hot spots that you just didn't see before the bath? Hot spots can sometimes be gooey and the fur will pop off from those but it's not usually caused by a bath unless you left soap on them. Sometimes that can irritate the skin and create some funky stuff if you don't rinse them enough. But usually hot spots are caused by allergies etc That's the only thing I can think of from what you are describing.
@@TheHeelerMama I think you are right, what worried me was large amount of them, from the back of her neck all the way down her back. What would you recommend I do next time? Just more water rinsing or a different shampoo?
@@alvarorivas9896 If you can find an oatmeal based dog shampoo I would use that but make sure if it says to dilute it, dilute it with water and make sure you rinse completely. Also hot spots can start too if the dog isn't dried properly but usually those are like under their elbow.
How old is your cattle dog?
Which one? lol Currently I have a 16 year old, two 3 year olds, and one 8 month old cattle dog.
What are you’re thoughts on having a male ACD neutered ?
I think it's a personal choice. I personally think if you are going to do it they should be at least 6 months old. I don't agree with doing it any younger than that like many are doing now. I think 6-12 months is the best time and my main reason for doing it is to prevent any unwanted puppies in case they roam and have a good time. :) I know there is must debate on behavior changes or aggression but I can say having groomed unfixed males and females both can be hormonal and temperamental, more the females but males have it too.
The Heeler Mama Thanks for your reply. Buck is approx 9 months old and we got him from a family who he was too much for and honestly I think that sometimes my self . We are in the process of moving from a small house with a little yard to a house on 46 acres in the country. My wife is worried about him “ marking” his territory in the new house . Never had a ACD , even though I’ve been around other breeds my whole life. I’m just hoping it will slow him down a few mph . He’s a very good dog who wouldn’t leave my side when I got ran over by my farm tractor. He knew I was hurt and he was right there with me until my wife got there. I think things will be a lot better at the new house and I’ve recovered from my injury. At the moment he is more than a hand full. Sorry so long but wanted you to have an idea of our situation and ask your opinion.
@@donaldmanning8263 Some dogs can still mark after they are neutered. Doing it sooner than later usually helps that. I mean they still mark in general males or females if they smell a good spot outside lol but it can help calm them down if they don't have an outlet for those hormones so to speak. Buck sounds like he's a really good boy and has a good bond already with you. I think if he is neutered and has that much room to run he will improve. They take a bit to calm down the first 2 years is the hardest but altering him could help calm him a bit more. High energy is an understatement with these guys. I know I neutered our one boy at 8 months and it helped him stop wanting to roam. Still tried to pee on every tree though lol. I hope everything works out and glad to hear you are recovered.
The Heeler Mama ... Again thanks . I know part of the problem is I’m not able to let him get the exercise he needs due to my injury and I also think he is going through one of those growth / personality spurts. Yes, we have a very strong bond already. Yes, I do believe when we get out to my great grand dads farm it will be better. Thanks for insight and please keep the videos coming. They have a great help !!!
@@donaldmanning8263 thank you I'm glad they are helpful. Buck has a good dad looking out for him. Increased exercise does wonders for these guys. I'm sure you will see the differnce in no time.
My cattle dog LOVEESSSSSS to roll in poop 😩 i leave him outside with his best friend German shepherd and come out to him covered in poop 😂
Thank you so much for this information! As a first time healer parent but long time dog owner I was kind of afraid to ask questions. Have you had any issues with nail biting before and how to curb that?
Your welcome and no, no real issues with nail biting. Gypsy sometimes bites her back nails but it's when spring hits and her allergies kick in. I'm still trying to figure out what to do to help her through it. But if nail biting is from allergies, rinsing their paws off from pollen etc can help deter them from doing it, (which is what I've had to do for her and it's seemed to help) but they can also chew from anxiety, infections, boredom or if they just feel their nails are too long they are trying to take care of it lol. It's just trying to figure out which it is. If you keep up with the nails and they are still doing it then I would think it could be boredom or allergies. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Questions make us better pet parents. 😁💙
You mean like no cutting the fur at all? I gotta keep my Rex trimmed up, err he looks like a ragamuffin. Especially around his neck/shoulders area.. and the backs of his thighs. I would never shave him though, he would look so weird all naked like that.. n I can’t imagine how cold he’d probably get too.
My dog has to roll in a mud puddle everytime I cleaning him
I can tell you right now my dog would rather take a beating than get a bath lol
🤣
Teething products?
Most pups do fine with just chew bones but if you want to do a little extra for them there are plaque wipes from Petkin that are good and dog toothpaste as well. One brand I like for toothpaste for them is Virbac.
@@TheHeelerMama my dog is about to be 1 year (August 24) we haven't start with dental . I need all help i could get his handful but love him. I never could see with a any other breed.
@@anazm15 Always start with baby steps when getting them use to it and be safe about it. I know some will not tolerate it. They really are the best dogs even with all their crazy 😁
@@TheHeelerMama what about training to learn how to swim?
@@anazm15 Start off with small bodies of water or even a small pool and help them through it. Guide them with a leash to get in and out to start getting them use to it. They have dog water vest which I recommend for bigger bodies of water/pools and you basically get in there with them, keeping your hands under their chest and stomach to help them until they get the hang of it. Go slow introducing them and placing them in the water and hopefully they love it. But not all dogs are keen to swimming.
I always just jump in the shower with him and it's quick and easy lol I feel like otherwise he would get all squirmy and would not let me bathe him...
😂
Me too. I have 2 and I have someone on the other side to swap out when I'm done. All summer they are in our pool so summer is awesome.
My dogs nails grow fast
How on earth does Gypsy sit for all this???
lol I taught her. She's done grooming since she was a baby with me. She just knows what I expect I guess.
Haha. He looks so scared. I’ve never bathed my pup
lol They act like it's torture just to make me feel bad lol
I do a sanishave on my boy cause his boys get really hairy and gross.
Sometimes those are necessary lol
