As an Australian I can honestly say he’s probably one of the only Blue Heelers that’s ever had a professional groom. Most just swim in the dams or the water troughs.

I’m not Australian but I was going to say: these dogs don’t need a professional groom like a poodle. Mine always smells good and has soft fur. I just brush her a few minutes every two or three days and if I do wet her, it’s a “sneak” bath where she gets soaked playing with the hose water and I dry her off. No shampoo.

My family found an old bule heeler at the shelter. He was about 13 when we got him. Didn’t know at the time but he had cancer. He was the sweetest old man you ever did meet. I think he lived for about 5-6 years with us before he passed but he was the gentlest of boys. Always waited at the front door to be let back in. If he wasn’t let back in within a timely manner he would mosey around the neighborhood but all you had to do was call him and he’d make his way back with the biggest smile on his face. For my second ever dog he was the perfect fit for our family. One of the smartest dogs I’ve ever met, such a gentleman to any animal or small kid.

I feel like a fair amount of herding dogs act like this for grooming. I have a 9yr old border collie and she does not enjoy getting washed unless there is classical music playing in the back ground. Took me awhile to figure it out but now she enjoys baths and likes to make sure she gives me a bath in return as thanks lol.
Edit 1: Ma I’m famous! Thanks for all the likes omg ❤
Edit 2: Holy smokes I did not expect this comment to blow up so much, thank you all!
I scrolled through the replies and saw a few people asking how I figured out how classical music calmed my dog. Her name is Roxy, she’s a standard black and white colored border collie with these adorable amber colored eyes, and she is actually 10 not 9 I have an awful memory with birthdays lol.
I figured it out because my family had one of those radios thats ok to be near/in showers, like waterproof or whatever, and sometimes I listened to it myself so I just had the random thought to turn it on and changed it to a classical music channel, Roxy seemed to mellow out a bit so I left it on while washing her. This was in one of those tubs that are weird triangle shapes you see in corners, I had a towel down on the bottom too because I quickly figured out she needed to have a good grip or else she would decide to lay down fully and not get up.
Happy to say this still works for her, now I just use a shower with one of those extendable heads so if she wants/needs to sit or lay down she can.
Its so cool to see other people do the same for their dogs, music is a universal language in my opinion.
Also I never meant anything negative towards herding dogs, if you’ve ever met or owned one its pretty easy to tell they are kind of spazzy, they want to be in control because they were bred to herd livestock, heck Roxy used to try and herd my little brother when she was a puppy, but we diverted that behavior into a soccer ball and she stopped nipping at people over time. Herding dogs can be very sweet when given proper care and attention. ❤

We had a Blue Heeler that was a rescue. He had been through quite a bit, and was always anxious with abandonment issues, but he was very smart and loved our son. His way of dealing with the doggie wash was to cry and yelp non-stop. The other dogs there looked on with disbelief at the great big baby. Still miss Rocket.

It’s amazing what they’re put through at times by we humans and still able to offer pure love and loyalty to rescuers and or new human families. At least there’s now more who see dogs, cats etc as family or loved companions/friends vs owning. IMHO they’re sentient beings. Not judging just observation. We’ll get there one day.

I've had dogs throughout my life, but never had a dog that was genuinely mine to until 2 months ago. I got a red heeler, also known as a Texas heeler. She was rescued from a situation where all she knew was bars(lived in her kennel). She was only let out to go potty. She's become my best friend. She may be crazy, and body slams everyone's he loves, but she's a VERY good dog. Many say it's not a good dog for your first, but she's continued to prove everyone wrong. Yes, there are some hard days, but everyone has those, even animals, and we can't fault them for that. She goes on car trips, forest runs, and more.

Our second heeler as a kid, Sassy, was very smart and loved to play rough with me and only me. I came back from a 14 month military tour to find that she had not forgotten me and still loved to play rough but it was a little tense because she grew into her adult body - she looked like a body builder; lean and ripped. She still trusted me and I her, even though always she growled as we played. Playing, like all things to a heeler, was SERIOUS BUSINESS.

Having had a total of five of them, I've found that good Blue Heelers are generally wary, willful, obstinate, and argumentative, but nonetheless extremely intelligent, observant, endearing little clown-beasts - with no social conscience whatsoever! ❤️ Almost everything you'd expect from a medium-sized dog bred to herd large, non-compliant, rough cattle for miles and miles in Australia's outback.

I live in Texas and fostered one for a week. I’m pretty sure he was abandoned on purpose by a farm owner nearby. He would not let my other animals eat or drink. If I gave my other dog attention he would snarl and bite at him. He also wasn’t very athletic and I would take him for long walks and he would wait to get in the house to pee and poop. It was awful. So glad I found him a good home and out of my house. He was crazy!!!

@@Kaytran97 Chilli and Bingo are Australian Cattle Dogs like Bluey and Bandit. Australian Cattle Dog is the official breed name but their nickname is Red or Blue Heeler depending on their colour. Chilli and Bingo are Red Heelers, Bandit and Bluey are Blue Heelers.
The nickname 'Heeler' comes from the way they move cattle, they nip at the heels of the cattle to get them moving. They're really feisty dogs because they have to be tough to work cattle that are several times larger than them.
