My older brother used to sing this song for me when I was going to sleep. He died of leukemia when he was 20 years old and I was just 3.Its about all I can remember of him and it still moves me to tears everytime I hear it.To this day I sing my girls to sleep at night to JT songs. One day they came in while I was watching an old JT vid on RUclips like this one and my younger daughter says “ Daddy,he’s singing your song”.I was floored and all I could think of to say was.....” bet you didn’t know you had a famous dad huh? “ They’ll figure it out someday but for now it’s how I keep my brothers memory alive.Thank you JT for all the years and the songs!
Update* Found out a couple months ago that JT was gonna be playing in our home town at CMAC and got tickets.Me personally I’ve seen him in person at least half a dozen times but I’m more excited that I can take my girls to see him while he’s still alive.Years ago I had the chance to see BB King play Jones Beach and though I wasn’t really familiar with music it was a unforgettable night that I’m glad I had a chance to see.

I sang this song to my mom the night before she passed away in hospice, and my aunt and I listened to it around her just after she passed. This song reminds me of when I told her it was okay, she could let go now. That she didn't have to be in pain anymore, I would be okay, I just want her to be free. She passed 5 minutes before I woke up the next morning on a cloudless, beautiful sunny day.
She sang James Taylor to me when I was a child to put me to sleep, and I sang him to her to send her off on her new journey. I'll forever be grateful for this song and his music.

They had a boy and girl together and he never had much to do with either of them. He's been married 3-4 times and CS was openly asked do you still love him?....her answer was yes. Ppl never do the research. They hear this song and read into it something that isn't there. Reality never lies to perception, yet perception always lies to reality.

James Taylor sang with a mellow voice of love, being your handyman, Sweet Baby James, you’ve got a friend, something in the way she moves, etc. But he abandoned his young wife for two, really three, mistresses: the regular kind, heroin, and staying in the UK to record for two years, leaving Carly and their young child alone at home in the US. He later said about his absence that they married too young. Didn’t admit his failures to her and his child. TA two-year absence from his wife. Two years away from his young child. I think he may have been younger than two years old when he left. She was all in for the marriage and supporting her husband’s career; he couldn’t be bothered to support her, and hasn’t spoken to her in decades. Carly left him legally because he left her physically and emotionally. Sad and tragic. You’d think he’d own up to what he did. Nope. But he sure has a great voice.

Addictions do that to a person. With all their brokenness inside, arrogance portrays outwardly. Weird. Would be nice if he would own up and apologize to her, even if he did not like the way she loved him, she loved him wholeheartedly and only him. Most men would relish that...It would also be nice if he buried the hatxhet and included her occasionally in his performances, they were beautiful together on many levels, especially professionally.

I couldn't believe it when they broke up. I thought, they're making s big mistake but no one knows what's happening in other people's lives. But, the 60's and 70's produced a lot of poetic singer/songwriters. That's what is missing in today's music. Where are today's poets?

I was a studio guitarist for many years. This song sounds so simple to play, but in reality it is a true challenge to play correctly the way JT does. Such a talented songwriter of course but he does not get enough props for his guitar work- same thing for Paul Simon and Glen Campbell; these guys could really play- not just write (Simon) and sing...

James has such a mellow, gentle voice so full of natural charisma.. it breaks my heart even today, listening to old Mud Slide Slim tunes, seeing such obvious love Carly had for James, and the cold, distant, self-involved manner in which he treated her. What’s worse, imho, it seems he has not acknowledged her loving, caring , gentle treatment of him.. he owes her an enormous conversation full of remorse, apology, and acknowledgment for all these years of how she was disregarded; how she holds him closely in her heart.. again, jmho, but he owes a tremendous emotional debt to her….if he can’t own that, l guess it goes to show what kind of person he is, behind the flowing, mellow voice ..

Absolutely agree I think they probably both made mistakes but he has such a cold character, and I feel the drugs made it far worse.
Carly just wanted to be loved. The way she looks at him I honestly think she could easily have given up the music for that relationship to succeed.

people only possess such an intensity of attraction to people who are emotionally unavailable and unreciprocative. the degree of the attraction is directly inversely proportional to the aloofness of the object of the attraction. the intensity of attraction immediately diminishes if it is proportionately reciprocated.

Oh, the sun is surely sinking down
But the moon is slowly rising
So this old world must still be spinning round
    And I still love you
    So close your eyes
You can close your eyes, it's alright
I don't know no love songs
I can't sing the blues anymore
Oh but I can sing this song
You can sing this song when I'm gone
It won't be long before another day
We gonna have a good time
And no one's gonna take that time away
You can stay as long as you like
    Only close your eyes
    You can close your eyes
    It's alright
Oh, I don't know no love songs
I can't sing the blues anymore
Sure but I can sing this song
Yes and you can sing this song when I'm gone
