The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys album is 52 or 53 years ago. As a young man in my 20s, I played this rock/jazz/funk fusion album
to death. It was so unique and still is. Steve Winwood was a boy genius from 14 and still has the talent today. Thanks, guys, for
hitting these deep cuts.
LSHHB is my absolute favorite 70s jam. Its incredible
I'm a few years younger, I remember this coming out & playing often. Which is saying a lot as so many great albums were around, plus AOR stations played all the latest from numerous albums, especially if you were into jazz fusion which this album. This album was a little more to the rock side but heavily steeped in jazz fusion.
Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys is one of the most important rock compositions and biting lyrics paired with of any song I can think of. Black Sabbath War Pigs, Pink Floyd top masterpieces, Rush, Zep: Steve Winwood had some underrated masterpieces. But in the day he was definitely well recognized.
Low Spark is canon to classic rock. If y'all haven't reacted to Low Spark yet, I highly suggest it. Traffic is quality. All-Stars.
Steve Winwood is a monster- session artist at age 14 backing up Ray Charles when he toured the UK, #1 song written by Jim Capaldi at age 17 and then his own hirs written at age 17 and 19, knocking the Beatles out of #1, then Spencer Davis, Traffic, and solo work in the 80s
Did you know that Jim Capaldi along with Paul Carrack wrote one of the biggest hit songs for the Eagles, Love Will Keep Us Alive.
And worked with Donny and Marie...on the COOCOO FOR COCOANUTS
Empty Pages is an absolute must from Traffic. The groove from drums, bass and organ is simple but impeccable.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's not forget Blind Faith.🌄
As is the entire John Barleycorn album
Wow... What can I say about Steve Winwood ? He has been onef my favorite musicians from the first time I heard him. He has been in groupls like "The Spencer Davis Group", "Traffic" , "Ginger Baker's Air Force" and of course.... "Blind Faith". This album is a masterpiece in my opinion. Traffic was one of the first groups to play longer songs that were not considered to be "radio friendly" at the time. No problem since they got plenty of play on FM stations. His solo career is fantastic as well. Traffic was one of the first groups that had flutes in their songs. Some of their music was a blend or Rock & Roll, Blues and Jazz. Thanks for reacting to this track. Great reaction. Take care.
Jim Capaldi is on vocals here, not Winwood
Y'all are taking me back to some of the BEST PARTIES of my youth- when every night was a party!! Traffic was REQUIRED, especially this album. This is STILL 🔥❗️DAMN we had FUN. Most of "my gang'' of friends are gone now. Thanks for bringing them to life again ☮️✌🏼 LOVE TRAFFIC ❤
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is one of those perfect albums. A thing of beauty.
Jim Capaldi (percussion) on lead vocals here.
He also wrote this track.
That was my motto in the 70s... Hell, it still is!!
One of my alltime favourite lps. Everybody involved in top form. Winwood, Capaldi, Gordon, Grech and Rebop.
Fantastic band
But please don't forget 'Chris Woods '
His flute and Sax!
In my humble opinion the signature sound of 'Traffic '!!!!!.....
A lapse in aged memory. You're quite right.@@tonyfleck3029
Never fid get to see Traffic but in the mid 90s i did see Dave Mason, guitar vocsls, and song writer from Traffic, play in a relatively small theater in Costa Mesa Ca. Sat about 20 feet from the stage. What a showman!! I never knew he was a master blues slide guitarist! One of the best shows ive ever been to and ive been to hundreds.
One of drummer Jim Capaldi's rare lead vocals and I love the change of pace, his energetic, boozy delivery is perfect for his song.
I think he also sings Rock N roll Stew! Good stuff Maynard...
I love watching him in Woodstock 1994.
The late, great Jim Capaldi on vocals and percussion on this one. That whole album deserves a full reaction, the Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is dope. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶
YES!!!! A TRAFFIC REACTION!!! RIP Jim Capaldi. You should watch this live on Woodstock 1994
And please watch their version of MOZAMBIQUE on same!!!
I saw them on that tour a week before Woodstock 2, they were amazing then and in the early 70s, both shows they just shined.
@@vicprovost2561- I agree 💯 I was amazed they sounded like it was 1975
@@888jimm The whole Woodstock 2 set is on You Tube as is Santa Monica 1972, you just don't hear/see music like that anymore! Amongst the all time greats, they will be heard forever!
@@vicprovost2561- I have watched both amazing..Santa Monica one could discern the were tripping bigly 😂 but were right on the money. SRV was like that as well on RUclips there is a sound check video he was asleep in the back they woke him up and from the first note it was fire . incredible that kind of talent. Me as a 67 year old hack guitar player can appreciate greatness.😂😂
Written and sung by original Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi who also plays percussion on this track along with drummer Jim Gordon and another percussionist, Reboo KwaZulu-Natal Baah. Ric Grech on bass and Steve Winwood on guitars, keys and backing vocals.
Jim Capaldi also wrote Low Spark lyrics. Winwood on composition final draft obviously, but Capaldi had some very early observations about frat boys. Not flattering. Accurate however.
@@Greg-io1ip Law Spark has nothing to do with fraternities but is about the music business. Jim wrote most of the lyrics for Steve.
Always a pleasure to hear Traffic reactions! Winwood is phenomenal, and the rest of the band is funkin' right along.
Steve is one of the best guitarists I’ve ever seen! And I’ve seen the greats Jimmy Page, Richie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Eddy VanHalen, SRV etc.
Love the way you guys listen all the way through to get the full flavor of a tune!
This whole album is 🔥!
Everything Steve Winwooid does is incredible. Jimi Hendrix sought him out for organ on Voodoo Chile and wanted to be in a band with him. He's an icon of icons.
You said it. Mt Rushmore of Rock has Winwood's mug carved up high. Like way high. Neil Young level.
This song is sung by Jim Capaldi. I saw him perform this live with Winwood and Traffic in '94, two days after the Woodstock '94 festival. His was amazing. RIP Jim.
Not everything
Dear Mr Fantasy is a huge song from Traffic. Many artists have covered it and it was even used as the opening song in Avengers End Game. There aren't enough accolades for Steve Winwood, with a career starting in his childhood playing pubs in England with his dad and brother at age 8, becoming well known enough to back up visiting American Blues musicians in the UK as a teen then joining a pro rock band at 14. Hits all throughout his group/solo career and still performing!
The Traffic Album "John Barleycorn Must Die" is excellent. It would be nice to see you react to all the songs on it. Love you guys lots, keep up the great work.
Absolutely
Especially "Empty Pages"!
You two are the best.
Steve Winwood was the genie in the bottle. Loved everything he touched, whether with others or as a solo artist. This is typical of Traffic…great music all around! You guys just nailed it on your reaction….you are the best!
This is Jim Capaldi on vocals, and he wrote it. Steve Winwood is playing the lead guitar on this one.
Glad you guys are doing traffic. Underrated band imo. Some real good fusion tines.
I think they are Underrated by those who aren't AWARE of this band. They were together for such a short time that they get overlooked. WE WHO KNOW- APPRECIATE the talent in this group. ✌🏼
They had so many hits. As someone pointed out, their music wasn't 'radio friendly'. Just came & went too fast. Same for Blind Faith. But the MUSIC from both bands lives on. Some of the BEST MUSIC EVER!!💯✨️
Traffic, one of my favourite groups back in the day and this song hit the nail on the head to every head who ever smoked....
Traffic is so Awesome 😎 🤤
TRAFFIC is a rabbit hole you definitely want to go down.
You can do Much more with Traffic. Get into Blind Faith. So Good 👍
Steve Winwood plays some insane leads on this record! "I'm a Man" with him on vocals with Spencer Davis is a jam, he was all of 17 I think...!??
Hahaha, I've been rewatching CHiPs. The music on that show is non-stop bangin', and really adds to the entertainment value.
Man this throws back to childhood immediately, one of my father's favorite songs is Low Spark so it's still there on vinyl and now I have my own copy. NEVER made the weed connection but I haven't heard this in who knows how long
exceptional musicians - great old album.
Great band! Their first 5 albums are all solid.
Traffic was phenomenal. All top musicians. Winwood and Mason were big time. Mason did some great solo stuff. Jim Gordon fantastic drummer, played with Derek & the Dominoes. Died in prison, killed his mother. Chris Wood another master musician…flute, sax, piano…Capaldi percussion. Must listen is Welcome to the Canteen…rebop does island percussion on that.
You guys are my favorite to watch!!!
This is the definition of groovy Bros. 😎🚬
Yeah, it was a good day. Robin Trower, Bruce Springsteen and Traffic. Steve Winwood killing it on Vocals and Keys, with the rest of this amazing band helping out. And Go Sox.
What a freakin great song!!! Right...
Another cool album that everyone owned. Has its own kind of special. Nice boys!
Groovy Man! Nice Deep Cut. 40.000 Headmen is a good one too.
This is one of the first albums I owned and still rocks to this day!
Never heard that one before. Thank you.
What a band Traffic was.
Now that's the Traffic song you want to hear.
You should listen to Medicated Goo by Traffic. It features Steve Winwood on vocals. They also have a great Jazz instrumental called Glad I think you would like! Peace!
Dear Mr. Fantasy. Essential. (Unless you’ve already done it?) sooooo good
Saw Traffic in London England in 1970
Love the bridge in this track.
One of my favorite songs by then but then again they have so many. Check out midnight blue for a heartache song
The White Shadow... Wow, La's digging deep!
Their Live Album :
"Traffic On The Road" , has an epic version of this track .
The whole album is fire but the reason I bought this album was for, "The low sparks of high heeled boys". Saw Steve Winwood in a small theater,(The Orpheum) in LA, years ago. He played a lot from this album ✌️🥰
No it s good but all these sound better on live album...requester fucked up again
One of my favorite songs by TRAFFIC. This song was written and sung by drummer/vocalist Jim Capaldi not Steve Winwood. Some songs I would recommend from them are "Glad' 'Empty Pages' "Medicated Goo' 'Dream Gerrard' "Mr.Fantasy' "Coloured Rain' 'Feelin Alright'.
Truth. Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Oh my God thank you...... according to some, there were no other band members than Winwood. Rock n' Roll Stew is another great vocal and song from Capaldi
@@dannymaguire879 Thanks ! Yeah,I felt a need to point out that Jim was the composer on this song here.."Rock n Roll Stew is also another great song that I would also recommend but just to again give credit where credit is due Jim Capaldi actually did not write 'Rock n Roll Stew. It was written by band members Rich Grech and Jim Gordon though sung by Capaldi,.....who does a great job.👍
@@TRANZEURO I meant the vocals only on Rock n Roll stew. Capaldi was a big influence in the writing with Traffic. Just take a look at most of the song credits, it's Winwood/Capaldi on quite a few. Dave Mason was also an influence in the character of the band. Wasn't trying to take credit away from Winwood in any way either. Just making a comment really on "Gee you can't tell that the vocal is quite different". That was more my point.
@@dannymaguire879 No,not at all. I didn't think you were trying to take credit away from Winwood or anyone else for that matter. I totally got we're you were coming from. It's strictly just me wanting to give credit to Rich and Gordon. Many times when I watch reaction videos on certain bands people will point out just *one* member.A good example is Genesis. They'll say things like this is a great Phil song. I;m like NO....GENESIS song. Tony or Mike or Steve wrote this not Phil LOL
Such a great record!
Top 20 favorite band. "John Barleycorn Must Die" album is iconic.
Excellent
Damn. I forgot about this song. Was on FM stations a lot back in day 🔥
Love this song, love this album - Many A Mile To Freedom & Rainmaker are epic
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Traffic and Winwood...such a groovy vibe (cool talk from a 72 yr old lol!)
Very cool snare fill after 0:41.
That bass line!
"A weed anthem" Che knows what time it is. 😁
I love how bands used to stretch out on songs, riff on it.
With the Spencer Davis Group Winwood ,co wrote I'm a man and recorded it a 16 yrs old.Chicago covered it and it was one of their killer hits on their debut Album
And Chicago ruined it being the overrated top 40 garbage band
This whole album is great....
Acid soaked jam at the end from the great Stevie Winwood
1971 was the best year in music… I could go on for a few minutes about this song but I'll spare you this time =8-)
😂 “I’ve told a few brothers that”
Love me some Traffic
Next Traffic song: “Low Spark Of The High Heeled Boys”; totally different vibe, one of Mom’s favorites ❤
Breakfast of champions!
You guys got the 2004 World Series goin on with those hats, lol. I’m from st Lou so it’s not the best memory. Great reaction. I’ve had this album since the 70’s.
If I had a band today, I would do this song knowing it would be a crowd pleaser. Very jazzy for the time. Some songs are cooler than others. I saw Traffic in the early 70's at the Boston Tea Party.
Great memory!
Traffic "From The Road",Sometimes I Feel So Uninspired will inspire you. Stevie kills the guitar...in his way
The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys is top notch, too
🤘🤘
Jim Capaldi takes the lead on this one. That guitar tho! ❤
40,000 Headmen couldn't make change my mind.....🎶🎼🎵
Steve Winwood on Rock's Mount Rushmore. Well above more commonly known names. Neil Young level, which is way on up. Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys is one of those ultra important songs. Arc of A Diver was Winwood stepping away from his producer and studio only influences just to say, "Here's how I make albums, anyone want me to produce your music?" And they came running.
Has that " School House Rock" sound to it.
Rock n Roll Stew next. You may as well do this album track by track too. Of course then someone will want John Barleycorn track by track and you'll be down the Traffic rabbit hole. Could be worse.
Now that's some fine drumming support.
Another great English group that had a number of ups and downs. The mainstay was Steve Winwood who left briefly to join super group Blind Faith. Low Sparks was the first album after Blind Faith was dissolved.
Barleycorn came out after Blind Faith and before this one but without the extended band here (Gordon, Gretsch, Baah).
Damn this guy passed me also
I didn't see this song on your channels list. Dream weaver by Gary Wright 1975 went to number 2 in us. Peace ✌️
WOW... been awhile since I heard that Beauty.... Eric Clapton on Lead I believe...
Sparked a few Fatties to this Anthem!!!
Thank You!!!!!
Clapton didn't play on the album, although the great drummer Jim Gordon, who played with Derek and the Dominos, did. That's Winwood on guitar.
This is an amazing album, as are all the Traffic albums. Dig your channel. I might suggest you guys watch the bands do tunes live. It's life altering. Was for me anyway. Peace
Can’t beat that nasty Wurlitzer electric piano in the rhythm section.
Are there any like MASSIVE MASSIVE TRAFFIC FANS here? Capaldi / Winwood fanatics ???
I see people giving props to Winwood on this song...... This song was written and SUNG by Capaldi..... not Winwood.
Hello to you , have you heard of Ian Dury and the blockheads ?? 70s/80s part funk part punk, part rock, part jazz the vocal has a rap flow to it. tracks like … sex and drugs and rock and roll. clever trevor. what a waste. Hit me with your rhythm stick. and Reasons to be cheerful part 3. All good music and I hope you get the time to enjoy. All my best to you and yours from Liverpool
He’s talking about weed, of course. In a subtle way.
Lots of well deserved love for Winwood, but remember he's not singing on this nor did he write the song.
Should have played the live version
Did you guys do the title track?
Weather report and Allan Holdsworth would b good extensions of this
Love Steve Winwood but that's not him singing this one it's Jim Capaldi😊
I am not sure I have ever heard this version before. I am more accustomed with live covers of it by Phish, you should check them out some time. Find a live video of Chalkdust Torture or You Enjoy Myself, the light shows are an integral part of the experience.
More Zappa please
Not a bad song on this album. When a song from this era fades out on the album you know when you go to see them live that very song will just keep on going. Bands from this era were almost always better live.
Listen to the live version from 'On the Road'
