  • In this new first time reacting to Traffic - The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys. The band Traffic gives us a very spatial music experience today. Combining elements of rock, jazz, and folk into this rock song. The extended instrumental sections and intricate musical arrangements of the "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" is note worthy. Not to mention the piercing lyrics and the amazing lead singer. Very memorable rhythmic lines by the instruments. Ooh don't get me started on the Saxophone or the drums or piano ooh many things to love here! Fans will find this unforgettable and new discoverers like me left impressed. The time just drifts away with this one. The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys would be a great pick for features in films, TV shows, and commercials. Traffic was a amazing band that was its own genre and led by the great Steve Winwood on vocals and guitar/keyboards. They have many great songs from the late 60s - early 70s, to see what I mean in spades, check them out live in Santa Monica 1972. Incredible set. I was lucky to see them twice, they expanded my mind and how to appreciate such musical greatness. Do Dear Mr Fantasy too, the studio original will blow your mind! I watched to the end and Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶

Traffic - Every release was an instant classic! I was a very young teenager when Traffic was together as a band and I always loved Steve Winwood. Such an extraordinarily talented group. You just don't see that kind of talent anymore. Ah, the '70s!

Actually, it's about the recording industry moguls and how they tried to control the music being made and ripping off the artists.

You had a very nice but short singalong that fit well with the tune. I've had this on my playlist forever. Had the vinyl, then cassette, then CD, and now mp3.

I think the legend is that the drummer who wrote this slid a page with the lyrics of the last verse to Steve Winwood as it was being recorded.

I got exposed to this when I was 18 years old after I just moved to go to college and I ended up dating my psychology TA. I was already a fan of the British band Ten Years After, but at any rate because of the age difference she was more on fire about music of the late sixties and early seventies and more knowledgeable about it than I was because I just heard what I heard on the radio as a little kid. I didn't buy my first final until 74 Maybe.
Anyway we would hang out and have fun and play music and stuff and traffic was one of her favorite bands and it quickly became one of mine and I ended up owning all of their vinyl. This one was a fantastic album physically because the corners of it were cut off at a diagonal, which was just unheard of at the time. But I really love the music
This was kind of an Anthem of sorts for that kind of music. But another long one of theirs, that I fell in love with even more than this one although I love this one dearly, is called, roll right stones and I believe it's off of the album called shootout at the fantasy factory. I bet you would enjoy it but they also have some cooler short ones like Evening Blue. And of course John Barleycorn Must Die what was the first one I ever heard from them and I got the impression right away that those people from the late sixties really loved it.

Wow! I've never heard someone describe this song, or thought of this song as a folk tale/tribal campfire story. But that's what it is, in essence. A masterpiece of blending genres and sounds, accompanied by a voice that compells one to be still and listen. Thank you for your reaction.

These are talented musicians. I heard of them in the late 1960's, but I'm most familiar with the lead singer and lyricist Stevie Windwood. He was in a band called The Spencer Davis Group prior to Traffic, and in one of my favorite bands called Blind Faith after Traffic disbanded. I saw Stevie Windwood in concert, a few decades after this song was made. He is a fabulous vocalist, and was the lead vocalist in all of these great bands. This is my first time hearing The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, and I enjoyed it. I'm wondering if high heeled boys is a drug reference. Otherwise the lyrics seemed to reference bands being exploited by their record companies and their managers back in the day. I know this was a huge issue for many bands. Great reaction, and I'm looking forward to the next one. I'm hoping that the song I'd Rather Go Blind by Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa will be coming up sometime.

I'm not going to type I made it man I hate that kind of stuff, but oops I just did it😂
Two I don't know just kind of build around a point that you made, and you're always so damn observant, it's great, but I would say that on a meta-level the lyrics provided jarring contrast to the more or less organic cool Jazz informed sound that we have. Add all of those guys are so good and Stevie Winwood is a fascinating vocalist to me.
It just seems like the lyrics tell a story I suppose that is age-old, but at the time in the late sixties or early seventies or whatever I think it was late 60s, this music was Innovative and right in front of everything and yet so representative and yet also the lyrics and the vocal delivery were really modern, talking about current issues and stuff all those through the veiled reference of metaphor and basically poetry.
