50 years later and i remember the words as if it were yesterday.😍 "..man was shot dead by a gun that didn't make any noise". The "gun" is the junkies needle. Such heavy lyrics.
"Traffic were an English rock band formed in Birmingham[, England in April 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. They began as a psychedelic rock group and diversified their sound through the use of instruments such as keyboards, like the Mellotron and harpsichord, sitar, and various reed instruments, and by incorporating jazz and improvisational techniques in their music."
From google "The song is about drug culture and the relationships between users and suppliers. Low spark is injection, and high heeled boy is speedball, a mixture of cocaine and heroin. The first verse is about shooting up. The second verse is about a dealer that got overdosed".
50 years on, and this song STILL gives me chills - what an absolute masterpiece from the musical superstar by the name of Steve Winwood. I still have the original vinyl among my thousand or so.
This song is about is about the music industry ripping off the artists which was very common back in the day. High Heeled boys refers to the platform heels that were in style for both men and women back then. Steve Winwood is the lead singer and I think also playing piano. This song is so cool!
Hey Bros !!! Love your channel !! Coming to you from NJ, USA I was born in '64..My older brother and sister had all of the amazing and outstanding music playing in our house. It was SO influential to me. This tune has the Best Vibes !!! Little Stevie Winwood is a Master !!! Love Your Channel..Please keep reacting to this decade of music
I don't know if you've reacted yet to Can't Find My Way Home, by Blind Faith. That was the band Steve Winwood was in with Eric Clapton. That is one of the greatest songs ever.
Indeed a masterpiece by Traffic; one of my favorite songs. Steve Winwood's vocals and piano playing are superb and haunting. Their sophisticated and transcending melody blew you away and made you speechless, an appropriate reaction to this beautiful song! If you love Steve's voice listen to him singing on the song "Can't Find My Way Home" when he was in the super group, Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker which is another fantastic song. You won't be disappointed.
One of favorite songs of all time no question. Interesting take on the meaning, but I always thought it was about the artists' disillusionment with the music industry, with lines like "the percentage you're paying is too high priced, while you're living beyond all your means" and "the profit they made on your dreams". The last bestverse really emphasizes this theme, "or would you strip me of everything including my pride" really the whole thing. At least that's always been my interpretation. In any case, easily one of the greatest songs of the rock era. Thank you bros!
Wow. Now I start thinking about the meaning that way and makes more sense. Thanks for sharing your point of view. Definitely one of the best songs we've ever reacted to!
That’s exactly what it’s about. The high heeled (rich/powerful) record execs and agent and their taking advantage of the musicians. Traffic was a bunch of very talented people but the stand out is lead singer/keyboard player, Steve Winwood. Check him out in Blind Faith or Spencer Davis Group or his solo career (Roll With It and Higher Love are bangers with a heavy R&B influence. )
I had this album back in the 70's. Lost the whole collection over the past 40 yrs. Decided to start a new vinyl collection again and this is the first album in my collection
So much fun to watch these young guys hearing this amazing song the first time. I remember very well when this song came out, I loved it and listened to it over and over. However, I didn't have headphones, so we listened to it extra loud. I just hope they listen all the way to the end when Chris Wood plays that final dissonant blast on his sax.
Incredible reaction Brothers! You are both so different which makes it all the more interesting to see. LITTLE KNOWN FACT~I got to actually hang out with Dave Mason who was a member of Traffic for some time. He and his band took myself and my 4 girlfriends to the only place close by that was open which happened to be a strip club! I had the time of my life! I walked in and a beautiful topless young woman walked up to me and asked my name and said; "Mr. Mason would like you to sit next to him." My mind was already spinning and I think it exploded at that moment! I still have my concert ticket that he signed and I'll keep that to myself. My most amazing night! It was at some point in the '90s. Thanks guys!
Very cool song about the music business. Steve Winwood.. so talented. This is smooth. Next you should do "Please Mr. Fantasy", and we all can * get snappy*!😉
Steve Winwood is the singer and keyboard player and possibly the saxophone player, he was also one of the keyboard players on the George Harrison tribute "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
OMG!!!! An absolute BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!! To whoever requested this...You're My Hero...Thank You!!!!💜🎶🎼🎵🤟 Spectacular then, now and FOREVER!!! Enjoy the ride....More Traffic please!!!!
Oh my Gents, now you know why many of us got stuck in Traffic. They are fabulous musicians with Steve Winwood heading them up. I have spent many, many hours listening to this album and still do love it. Please try Dear Mr. Fantasy next by them. Thanks for this.
Hey guys! Before this dumbass pandemic, we got to see Steve Winwood from Traffic perform in the New York area. Twice! If you get a chance to see him, he still sounds phenomenal. He played Low Spark. A favorite of mine in my teen years.
Thanks Guys! For re-introducing me to this freaking classic! I had forgotten just how damn good this song is! I know you say this a lot, “I’m flying! I am flying right now!’ And I appreciate that reaction. It reminded me though of a song you NEED to do. From the Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour album; the song is called Flying. You will fly! And it goes right into another great song called Blue Jay Way (by George Harrison) Enjoy!
As much as you gentlemen LOVE live music...The LIVE version of this singer Stevie Windwood does with Eric Clapton as they call themselves Blind Faith- the song is " Can't Find my way home." It will blow you away!!!
A couple of months ago, when y'all reacted to Yes playing Roundabout, and wondered what other bands were the contemporaneous inspiration for such amazing music (speculating that they might have been from the future).... Well, you just heard it. Traffic and King Crimson were right in there with Yes pushing the boundaries at that time in music history. I loved watching you get lost in the sauce, and couldn't wait to see your minds being blown by that incredible dissonant yet beautiful spine vibrating chord at the finale.
I rushed out to the record store to buy this album immediately after hearing this track played on our local progressive rock station. It was late 1971; I was 17 and in my senior year of high school. I'm 70 now and love this music as much as ever! I'm so glad you guys enjoyed it too just 53 years later! The beauty of Traffic's style on this album is their ability to have a polished studio album still sounding like an impromptu jam session. Magnificent!
Such a great band. One of the many bands that Stevie Winwood sang with. Other things to check out with Winwood on Vocals: Spencer Davis Group "I'm a Man", Blind Faith "Can't Find My Way Home", more Traffic with "Dear Mr. Fantasy", or his solo work like "Valerie" or Arc of a Diver, where he played every instrument himself and sings. He's a musical genius.
Traffic has many fantastic songs, Winwood has one of the greatest voices in Rock and Roll, no doubt! Such a great song, from one of my favorite bands - keep going with them!!
Yes, I certainly remember Traffic - Stevie Winwood was with the Spencer Davis Group and left to form Traffic along with Jim Capaldi and others - they had some fantastic songs - Hole in my Shoe, Paper Sun and Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush - I'm pretty sure I had them as singles. This one I'm not too familiar with but it blew me away. Honestly, there are so many bands to be explored. I'm probably listening to more music now on a daily basis than I've ever done before, certainly since the first lockdown way back in March last year. I know I couldn't survive without all my favourite music old and new - it has been such a blessing and always will be. I probably did take it for granted a bit growing up but not any more. It is very precious as I think you said, George, in the Chris Stapleton reaction - you're absolutely right and it's also extremely emotive. We are very lucky to have access to such a powerful medium which can cater for whatever mood we're in. Well, certainly more songs from this band to react to, guys. Many thanks for your reaction to this one. Cheers.
Look at George and Patrick at the end, so blown away, so high. Love it!! You reacted to “I’m a Man” it was a Chicago cover of a Stevie Winwood song. He is brilliant.
Your reactions were priceless. I love the Internet because it makes it possible for us to connect across continents and share music. I am so happy to have found your channel. Keep up the great work! I hope one day you’ll find the time to react to the following: Talking Heads Tom Tom Club Duran Duran Snow Patrol Stevie Wonder Ray Charles Nina Simone The Clash New Order Joy Division And so many more! Love your channel Patrick and George. I’m still trying to decide which one of you is the most handsome! LOL ❤️😉
Maybe others said. It's the musicians' reaction to the 'suits' business men in the music industry who exploited the 'high heeled boys' musicians for their art to profit to get rich on their art. Good one guys!
Your reaction at the end reminded me of myself when I heard it for the first time - holy shit, what did I just listen to - ran out and bought the album that afternoon and played it twice a day for a week. FYI, Winwood and Ric Grech (bass) played with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker on the eponymous one-time album "Blind Faith". Do yourselves (and us) a huge favor and react to "Do What You Like" from that album. ruclips.net/video/u2IpqvvlT24/видео.html Everyone asks for "Can't Find My Way Back Home", but my favorite seems to not ring anyone else's bell. It's a long cut, with everyone getting a 3-4 minute solo. DO IT PLEASE !!!!
Hi; I came here before watching your live reaction to this. This has long been a favorite of mine, and I'm glad you felt it's beauty. Not sure how many others mentioned this, so if I do so again, it is out of consideration of it's importance. :) The crucial new element here was not just jazz, but specifically John Coltrane (and not just the extreme saxophone battles and block piano chords...so cool!, Coltrane may have recorded with congas before Traffic did. And this just plain sounds like they've been listening to a lot of him recently!) and Electric Miles Davis (it's jazz but it's rock but it's...wow!). Traffic masterfully collaged their other influences to make this remarkable piece, but if you're curious about that part...floating improvisation, almost scandalous choice of notes or tones, an acknowledgement of all kinds of rythmic choices and obvious interactions...well, that's largely jazz, especially the way they played it here. Jazz and rock have interacted since rock was old enough to do so, but you might particularly like this experimental, instantly important, multicultural (and when you add Miles) jazz-rock-electric side of music. There's a lot of 'jazz' in those four letters, so I'd be happy to help in any way in navigating that ocean. And now I'm going back to the future to see the live version. Cheers!
Thanks for the reaction, brings back a lot of memories. When I was in high school we'd drag the stereo out in the back yard on summer nights ,get get high and listen to the album.
If somebody asked me to list my top 10 favorite songs in the history of music, across all genres, this song would definitely be on that list! Like you, it takes me to la-la land EVERY TIME I HEAR IT!
What's really wonderful about music is is the way it can transport you to another time and place. Our memories have no concept of time. It's like it's happening all over again. A great comment I seen on these reaction videos was "It's worth being older now to have been young then." This whole album is a treasure. Enjoyed listening to this with you Bros!
The title came from a remark the actor Michael J. Pollard had made to drummer Jim Capaldi when he was visiting London about the popular Cuban heel boots the boys were wearing at the time. The lyrics were Capaldi's commentary on the music industry and the control of the execs over the musicians and their freedom to create. 40,000 Headmen and Feelin' Alright are some good ones to check out. I totally burned up my Traffic vinyl back in the day. Just incomparable!
This song is not about drugs, but about the music business "The man in the suit has just bought a new car from the profit he's made on your dreams." Great stuff.
Steve Winwood - lead vocals, guitar, piano, organ Jim Capaldi , percussion, ,Chris Wood - saxophone, Ric Grech - bass, Jim Gordon - drums, Rebop Kwaku Baah - percussion; perform this track. Fantastic. Try Every Mother's Son also by Traffic, in fact anything from John Barteycorn Must Die,The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys or Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory, 3 great albums. There is a song called Roll Right Stones on Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory which will blow your mind entirely. The Rollright Stones are a complex of three Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monuments near the village of Long Compton in England. The passage of Time, magic.
I have been a big Traffic fan from their first album - and Steve Winwood - bought this album when it first was issued in 1971 and like you Im blown away about how those musicians put that song together.Wonderful stuff.
One of my all time favorites. 50+ year ago flashback to my bedroom...blacklight...incense..eyes closed..totally lost in this song. About the music business but you also get the gun imagery right too. Those instruments!!!
Omg one of my my favorite cuts what it is about beyond me 40 + years of listening just always . I was 10 maybe when it came out. I thought the rich guy getting his on the back of the minumui wage earner. If I'm having a bad day a glass of wine this song I'm good to go. The f**king classics ...... need I say more cheers
"Dear Mr. Fantasy" is another great song by Traffic. Steve Winwood, the lead singer and piano player on "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys", is one of the great geniuses of the classic rock era. He was also lead singer for Blind Faith, and their song "Can't Find My Way Home" is another song you definitely need to hear. You may not realize it, but you heard Steve Winwood more than once today. On the George Harrison tribute video of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", Steve Winwood was the guy playing the organ.
Funny you should mention "tripping"! After a day and night of heavy LSD there was nothing better to come-down with than this album. Put a chunk of good hash in the hookah, and take the edge off the LSD. Then listen to the funk of the Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys! I can seek the black-light lit posters in my bedroom in my minds-eye. Traffic was a far-out group, man. They were the BOMB! Thank youse for bringing back the great memories.
Great band, great song, great reaction. Stevie Winwood is so talented. For a bit of fun check out Berkshire Poppies, a quirky Traffic track which has Steve Marriott singing along. My 2 favourite artists together!!
Nice reaction to a great song guys, the title came from a quote signed into a book for the bands drummer from an actor he was working with. But the song is about the dark underground of drugs and illicit parties, and dealer making money from addicts not caring what damage they are doing, the silent gun is a reference to dying from a syringe. All of the projects Stevie Windwood are awesome Traffic, The Spencer Davies Group, Blind Faith and his solo music are all worth checking out great music with clever lyrics
Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood & Dave Mason made up what was one of the most creative bands to come out of the late 60's-early 70's Britain. Steve is one hell of a musician, a multi-instrumentalist, great singer and lyricist and virtuoso. I just love the late Chris Wood's Sax and flute and the late Jim' Capaldi's spare but great drumming. Dave was in an out of the group but Traffic's early success with 'Hole in my Shoe' and later 'Feelin' Allright' were valuable contributions. My suggestion is to look at 'John Barleycorn Must Die', a favourite album of mine with Traffic sans Mason in fine form. NB. Steve and his brother Muff were part of Spencer David's (Davis) group with hits like 'Keep on Running' and 'Gimme some Lovin'.
Great song, great band. More Traffic please; "Paper Sun", "Dear Mr. Fantasy", "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone", "Shanghai Noodle Factory"... so many more. Steve Winwood is a music prodigy. His solo album "Arc of a Diver" is truly that... Solo. He plays every instrument. You might try the title song as well as "Night Train" from that album... and you say you like Sax. Please listen to Joe Bonamassa doing "Cadillac Assembly Line" liv e at the Greek Theater. Not only will he blow you away, the Sax solo will give you chills.
Stevie Winwood and Traffic; LOVE THEM; Please also do their songs: Walking in the Wind, Dream Gerrard, Memories of a Rock N Rolla, Stranger to Himself. (there are a lot more)
This guys get both the music and the lyrics.
50 years later and i remember the words as if it were yesterday.😍 "..man was shot dead by a gun that didn't make any noise". The "gun" is the junkies needle. Such heavy lyrics.
14:27 "What is that?" That is perhaps the single greatest note in rock'n'roll history.
They were thinking how cool it would sound.
This song puts me on Highway 1 north of San Francisco in the early 70's-- full transport!
That's pretty much what I was like when I first heard this in 71.
From google "The song is about drug culture and the relationships between users and suppliers. Low spark is injection, and high heeled boy is speedball, a mixture of cocaine and heroin. The first verse is about shooting up. The second verse is about a dealer that got overdosed".
No. It's about exploitation of musicians by the music industry. "The man in the suit" is the record company exec.
50 years on, and this song STILL gives me chills - what an absolute masterpiece from the musical superstar by the name of Steve Winwood. I still have the original vinyl among my thousand or so.
Me too.
This song is about is about the music industry ripping off the artists which was very common back in the day. High Heeled boys refers to the platform heels that were in style for both men and women back then. Steve Winwood is the lead singer and I think also playing piano. This song is so cool!
I believe Danny Seraphine (former drummer/Chicago) actually received a bill from the managers.
Makes sense - Thanks for that insight.
BS
Steve Winwood
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love your reactions to these really epic songs.
Their the best. Listen to this from the early 70s.
Dear Mr Fantasy - Great Traffic song.
A must!
Agreed, great track
Hey Bros !!! Love your channel !! Coming to you from NJ, USA I was born in '64..My older brother and sister had all of the amazing and outstanding music playing in our house. I don't know if you've reacted yet to Can't Find My Way Home, by Blind Faith. That was the band Steve Winwood was in with Eric Clapton. That is one of the greatest songs ever.
Another must!
Absolutely!
@Xxaphius to each his own but they were together 9 months and I saw them live and they were incredible
Steve Winwood is one of those gifted musicians that can do no wrong. Anything he has a part of is going to be GREAT.
Truth (is he in Blind Faith)?
Indeed a masterpiece by Traffic; one of my favorite songs. Steve Winwood's vocals and piano playing are superb and haunting. Their sophisticated and transcending melody blew you away and made you speechless, an appropriate reaction to this beautiful song! If you love Steve's voice listen to him singing on the song "Can't Find My Way Home" when he was in the super group, Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker which is another fantastic song. You won't be disappointed.
You just listened to one if the greatest voices of his era. Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group, and then his solo career. Steve Winwood
Steely Dan ~ "Any Major Dude Will Tell You"
Masterpiece...a trip out of body
Correct.
And also men wearing platform (hi heeled boys) shoes! One of my favourite albums.
One of my all-time favorites, as well. Thanks for the reaction!
That’s exactly what it’s about. The high heeled (rich/powerful) record execs and agent and their taking advantage of the musicians.

Decades of different Artists, Bands, and Genre´s of Music lay ahead of you, there is so much out there, are you guys in for treat.
Van Morrison ~ "Into The Mystic" and "It Stoned me". Both Incredible songs Dude...!
You said it - "this is contagious". 👍
The way the rhythm section doubles, triples and jazzes up the beat is wonderful.
One of my favorite songs!! The meaning can be anything you want it to be, but the music is just awesome! So glad you liked it!
Incredible reaction Brothers! You are both so different which makes it all the more interesting to see. Epitome of music with a great deal of soul.
It is truly one of the best songs ever, all aspects; it draws you in.
Steve Winwood is the singer and keyboard player and possibly the saxophone player, he was also one of the keyboard players on the George Harrison tribute "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Chris Wood got his start in a jazz band. This song is jazz rock.
OMG!!!! An absolute BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!! To whoever requested this...You're My Hero...Thank You!!!!💜🎶🎼🎵🤟 Spectacular then, now and FOREVER!!! Enjoy the ride....More Traffic please!!!!
Couldn't agree more! Totally forgot about the magnificence of this song! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!
when you hold your headphones..... The music owns you...!
Absolutely!!!
You should listen to this singer when he was 15 yrs old. Steve Winwood Nobody knows you when your down and out.
Unbelievable dude!
It was a joy growing up in the 70s. A lot of great music.
Its been one of my favorite songs of all times for the last 45 years.
Sooo many songs by Steve need more reactions. He's an amazing singer, musician, songwriter. Love him.
"Strong undercurrent " of all that was going on, on the street. My favorite Traffic piece.

Thanks Anne for your nice words :)
This song is about the music business.
I've just recently discovered your channel but I love your genuine reactions. This song is just GREAT!!!!
Might I suggest you try Jeff Lynne's ELO - Telephone Line (Live at Wembley Stadium). This guy had the voice of a bloody Angel.
This really makes me smile to see you enjoy really great music
Thanks Karen so much :)
Look at George and Patrick at the end, so blown away, so high. Love it!!
You reacted to “I’m a Man” it was a Chicago cover of a Stevie Winwood song. He is brilliant.
We are still tripping... :)
I think they're referring more to being a sellout to money and possessions
Your reactions were priceless. I love the Internet because it makes it possible for us to connect across continents and share music. I am so happy to have found your channel. Keep up the great work! I hope one day you’ll find the time to react to the following:

One of my favorites. A truly unique band.

This is prolly their BEST song. Mr Fantasy is also a WINNER!!!!🔥👍🔥😎
Thanks for just being there and liking great music as much as I do. Damn I miss horns but especially tenor saxopphones..
This is one of my favorite songs

Chris Wood on tenor sax, RIP man.
Hi Guys and thanks so much for your reactions !! More Traffic - Empty Pages !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks !!
Still absolutely love this song!! Thanks for reacting!!
love Traffic fantastic band
Love this song and your reactions. Patrick, u have a beautiful voice, and George, the way u feel the music makes me smile so much. Kindred spirits.
Such a great song. omg Thank a lot for posting.
I have been a big Traffic fan from their first album - and Steve Winwood - bought this album when it first was issued in 1971 and like you Im blown away about how those musicians put that song together.Wonderful stuff.
Love Traffic in all its incarnations.
Good music never get old!
One of my all time favorites. 50+ year ago flashback to my bedroom...blacklight...incense..eyes closed..totally lost in this song. About the music business but you also get the gun imagery right too. Those instruments!!!
One of my all-time favorites. Cool beans.
One of three songs (the other two are Born to Run and Marquee Moon) that I remember exactly where and when I heard it for the first time.
My first concert was Traffic when I was 14... it was mind blowing. Loved your reaction.✌️♥️🎶
So good! Thank you Diane :)
❤️❤️❤️❤️. I So love this. Thank you
Great reaction. And that color changing in the background is very cool.
More pleeeaaaasssseeeee of traffic...this is such a long song. But it doesnt seem that way. Such a great composition
Stevie Winwood and Traffic; LOVE THEM; Please also do their songs: Walking in the Wind, Dream Gerrard, Memories of a Rock N Rolla, Stranger to Himself. (there are a lot more)
One of the great masterpieces
