I was at a doctor's appointment and I saw the nurse had a rose tattoo on her neck. I mentioned I'd just learned the song, but forgot I had my harmonica in my pocket and could have played it for her.
I saw them live several years ago. They had acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, mandolin, bagpipes, flute, bass, and drums. The guitar players would switch to other string instruments several times in the middle of a song. They are amazing live. If they ever come through your area, absolutely go.
You can’t do Dropkick Murphys and not do Flogging Molly now. Both have heavy elements of Celtic folk music mixed with gritty in your face punk. Punk is definitely more about the message than the technique. Both punk and Celtic music have a major focus on storytelling and just mesh so well together.
Absolutely Flogging Molly should be done. I'd love to see her reaction to the official video for Float - or any of a dozen or more other songs, for that matter.
Came here looking for the Pogues recommendation. Great fun as a band, and I'd like to see a discussion of Shane and Kirsty's singing in Fairytale in particular. This channel's not very sweary though; might need to check the lyrics. The more recent version of the lyrics without the homophobic slur might be usable? Have to say The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is a cover version though. One of a number I think. The original is by Eric Bogle, an Australia-based Scot who does folk and a lot more. I love his live album I Wrote this Wee Song. When my kids were babies I needed something with a waltz rhythm that I could sing quietly from memory while tired and bobbing them round the kitchen in the middle of the night, so The Band... and also No Man's Land (a similar song in original artist, covers and subject, as well as musically) became go-to lullabies for us. Might explain something about the younger one's dark turn of mind...
i think like all art you have to take it in the context of it's time and PUNK wanting to shock you and provoke thought. like TSOL's Code Blue and The Forgotten Rebels 'f#ck me dead. Which both on the surface deal with nechromancy, but really are dealing with male dominence in the extreme to prevoke thought and conversation of how bad that is....
especially because just a couple lines later he talks about how the dog "defiled" it and left him the mess and it looks like Elizabeths brain glitched!
Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly is the epitome of Celtic Punk Rock for me. I highly, highly encourage you to check that one out if you want to explore this genre. The music video is great, but try to find a good live performance if you can - these guys are crazy live.

The Rumjacks are an Australian Irish punk band, it was FASCINATING to be introduced to their music after being a big fan of Celtic punk bands from North America. The style is similar, but the lyrics are very different, because of course their stories/experiences are so very different.
Yep, The Rumjacks style of writing, most notably the lyrics, was mostly done by Frankie McLaighlin, the Scottish born lead singer, who was a masterful poet and blended modern English with the some scot/Celt language and old world English of sorts. Gave it a real different flavour, it was magnificent. Sadly Frankie had his troubles and the band parted ways with him. They now have an American lead singer and the writing duties are spread around a bit more but the music is still fantastic and lyrics still tell great stories, but certainly has a different feel to it now. But certainly worth checking out!!
The quintessential Irish punk band would be the Pogues, and they have a Christmas song as well, which is immensely popular: "Fairytale of New York". Another great Irish punk band if Flogging Molly.

Wow! I never ever thought you would analyse my favourite punk band! Thank you Elizabeth! 😁 I've heard Dropkick Murphys describe themselves as vocally challenged, but that wouldn't be punk rock right? But...... It would be amazing if you could get Al Barr for a Tea Time interview (although Ken Casey sang this Christmas song). Al suffered an 'arterial venus malformation'. This resulted in one paralysed vocal fold and I believe he struggles with oxygen flow to the brain while singing. I'd love to hear you discuss this with Al or better still, Al and Ken as they have two vocalists and find out how he manages to perform so often and consistently. Thanks again Elizabeth, you made my day with this one!

My wife and entire family has known for several years now that, when my day comes, if my end of life celebration doesn’t look ALOT like the video for Going Out In Style, I’m coming back to haunt them all.
Absolutely one of my favourites. This will be my funeral song (hopefully many many years in the future). Only the Murphy's could take something like dying and make it fun lol.

Dropkick Murphys have one called Green Fields of France that's the polar opposite of this one. Slower, based on war, much more emotion. My all time favorite band!!!
"Home for a Rest" by Spirit of the West is an excellent canadian song in this style. I am not sure how well known the song is ouside of canada but it has excellent violin and flute solos in it.
The video of this song from the fundraiser for John Mann was lovely! I'm not sure if it lends itself to analysis, though. On the one hand you get a bunch of different vocalists with unique accents/styles in close up camera shots, but on the other hand most of the song is chorus and instrumental parts and it the camera cuts out quite a bit on the solo parts.
I was so surprised and excited to see this on my timeline! Dropkick has been my favorite band for years. Their style is so unique and fun. They also do quite a bit of philanthropy work in the Boston area. Funnily enough the lead singer & songwriter Ken Casey has been sober for many years. There’s not a whole lot to analyze vocally but I’d love to see more of them from you!
You are such a treasure to this platform. You’re the only reaction channel I can watch because you’re one of the only ones that provide genuine feedback on the things you’re reacting to. Love it!
Stair sledding tips: couch cushions, the big ones you can make forts out of, are more efficient barriers than pillows. The foam is stiff enough to absorb a lot of force and are fairly big. They also stay in place a bit better. And I would suggest doing it on a carpeted floor & stairway. It's a bit softer and might be a smidge less bumpy. Don't worry if there is a wall right at the bottom of the stairs. You won't be going too fast, and the cushions should protect you (and the wall). Me and the guys at university collectively did a couple hundred runs in this one house where there was no more than about 4ft of clear space at the bottom & nobody got hurt.
There is something in celtic punk that every holiday whisky raiser cherishes and has deep rabbit hole to dive deep into. After going through greatest from Dropkicks, natural (taxi)route is on Flogging Molly, who have eternal pieces like If I Ever Leave This World Alive and Float, plus mandatory Drunken Lullabies.
Never mind your other videos. This is the best one yet !. I hope you can do another video to see another very touching side of Dropkick Murphy. Wish You Were here. It will bring a tear to your eye. Dropkick Murphy Rules !.
With the Irish theme, you need to hear Zombie by The Cranberries. Heavy guitar with folk undertones. Amazing vocals and powerful lyrics about The Troubles in Ireland/UK
Watching this made my Christmas season more enjoyable! I laughed all the way through it. Love the Dropkick Murphys. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!
Every year, I get a live tree and then after Christmas, I plant it over the road from my house! There's four there at the moment because a few times under cover of darkness, ( Not the British metal band, I hasten to add ) some have been whisked away near to the Christmas season!
On off years my mother only put up 11 Christmas trees and she had one that stayed up year round. The annual tree was then decorated for each holiday as the year progressed.
Now that you are Diving into the dropkick murphys you need to listen to their Amazing Grace. I once belly danced to this song at a restaurant back in the day. It was great 😊
Thank you for doing this song and this band! You are awesome and the willingness to play along and enjoy the crazy sing along is great. I love the dropkicks and I appreciate your willingness to take them seriously.
Elizabeth: "That teddy bear has clearly not been loved on enough by that dog!" The lyrics, almost immediately: "He defiled my teddy bear and left me the mess!" Well, that didn't age well ....
Love the Dropkick Murphys! So many great songs, it would be amazing to hear you dive deeper. They bring a lot of energy, fun, good times with friends, sing a longs, amazing music, etc.
If you're doing more Dropkick Murphys, you should do the song "Forever". It's the best lovesong ever written. It's about the real, deep, imperfect love and not some sugar coated imaginary schlock.
To do celtic punk right you have to go to The Pogues. "Fairytale of New York" is my favorite Christmas song. Though it's a Christmas song like Die Hard is a Christmas movie. The 30 year anniversary live version is a great performance for Shane.
Bad Religion, another great punk band, has an album of classic Christmas Songs, called Christmas Songs, I think. The whole album is a banger. Oi To The World by The Vandals, and Father Christmas by The Kinks are two classic punk Christmas originals. (My favorite is This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground), by Set It Off.) I’d love to see you do more punk rock in the future!
As a Murphy, I must contribute! We are 2nd generation full-blooded Irish. One Thanksgiving, my cousins in Pittsburgh were getting together at my oldest cousin, Noreen's home. She was preparing the turkey, which was still partially frozen (I know, I know) when she realized she needed a couple of things. Her brother, Tommy and her husband said they would go to the store for her. Well, she cooked the turkey and was still waiting hours later for their return. Well, her Irish was up and around 10 at night she heard singing. Now, many places in Pittsburgh are on hills, and her driveway was up a hill. She looks out the door, and there are Tommy and her husband holding onto each other singing at the top of their voices and trying to walk up the icy driveway, slipping and falling. She was so enraged, that she grabbed the turkey in the pan with the hot gravy and threw it at them! Of course they fell over laughing and the hot turkey pan melted a fast path into the street. The boys came in and they all had a good fight! Well a while later, they thought, "Oh sh*t, the turkey!!!" They ran outside to search for it but it was nowhere to be found. Where it went is a mystery but I like think some Irish neighbor stumbled upon it and said "What LUCK!" Fourth of July was a party on Tommy's boat near Three Rivers Stadium, where a fight ensued, his brother Jimmy was thrown overboard and Tommy turned the boat away and was driving back. They convinced him to go back and fish poor Jimmy out of the drink.
An excellent choice! Another one is The Dirty Glass (with Kay Hanley). Plenty of excellent choices in the DM catalog. On a similar note, it would be interesting to do Flogging Molly and compare Salty Dog with Say What You Will, by Fastway, since its the same singer :)
As someone else pointed out, the hand drum is a bodhran (pronounced bo-rahn), and is a Celtic drum that was used for war because of how loud they can be. When played well (and it is far more difficult than it seems), it can take on almost a heart beat like sound, and adds a very unique beat to Celtic music. A now disbanded, but popular Celtic folk rock band here in Canada, was called Great Big Sea... And for the first decade of the band, the only percussion instrument they used on stage was Sean McCann playing bodhran. GBS also wisely chose to use button accordion often because as they noted once in an interview "Accordions can be heard at the back of a very loud bar or dance hall.", which makes sense for largely acoustic instruments that are used in Celtic music. As for this song, I friggin' love it. Loved it from the minute it came out. I found your video as a recommended while I was watching their video as part of my annual playlist. Another really good more recent tune that sums up The Dropkick Murphys well is Goin' Out In Style... In typical Celtic fashion, it's a very funny song about dying (Great Big Sea has a traditional one called The Night Pat Murphy Died that is a banger too)... And on that note, Merry Christmas, and I'm so glad to see someone with your acumen enjoy something like this... Another fun punk adjacent act is Frank Turner. His lyrics are... Like no one else. Love him.
OMG CeltPunk is the most AWESOME genre. you need to listen to Rose Tattoo for more Murphy's. the Punk elements come in the fact that it's very blue collar music
A perfect choice for Christmas, Elizabeth! The best thing about The Dropkick Murphys is that they never take themselves seriously, despite some major hard rocking songs. There's a perpetual tongue planted firmly in their cheeks. You're right about the song being more about the story than the technical aspects of voice. Celtic, being a Folk music, is the song of the people. Played at home, on special occasions, for community gatherings. It's always been more storytelling than anything else. When the Acadians were banished from Canada in the late 1700's, they traveled south to the French colony of Louisiana, bringing their music with them. Eventually, the music was adapted over the years until it became Bluegrass and Country. The Acadian name was also adapted over the years, shortened into becoming Cajun. I had the joy of playing in a Celtic Rock band for many years. We had a strong local following, played thousands of shows from empty pubs to several thousand screaming fans. Every show was such joy to play. The drum you noticed is called a bodhran (pronounced bow-raan), played with a single two headed stick called a tipper, with your second hand on the other side of the skin changing pressure and moving different positions to change the tone and sound. It's the instrument I played most in my old group, as well as one of four lead vocalists. Merry Christmas, Elizabeth, to you and your family! ♥
I love drop kick! I love the song TESSIE so much my wife and I named our daughter tess lol. They have an entire ST. Patty's day album from Boston and it's glorious. During covid they were doing live shows on FB bc their fan base couldn't come to shows so they were doing free Facebook shows

hi Elizabeth i hope you see this comment, please react to the band PARAMORE especially the song "the news" that came out a little while ago or "misery business".
Celtic Punk happens all over the world, with bands from the places you would least imagine, and it is highly musical, with great virtuosos and yes, the punk attitude. Hope you get to hear other bands such as Cloverhearts, Rumjacks, Flogging Molly, Flatfoot 56, Sir Reg, Paddy and the Rats, The Men They Couldn't Hang, Black Water County, Brave the Sea or The O'Reillys and the Paddyhats. It's mostly fun, but not only fun.

I still haven't gotten tired of "Shipping up to Boston". Scantily clad women are welcome at my Christmas gatherings. Elizabeth, you're invited.
Listened to these guys for years now. They're great! They always look like they are fun on stage, and they love their audience.
OMG! You did Dropkick Murphys! They have so many great songs.
Celebrating all year round takes away what makes it special...
Hands down the most fun I've ever had at a concert was at a Dropkick show. Seen them 3 times and will see them EVERY chance I get.
You are such a treasure to this platform. You’re the only reaction channel I can watch because you’re one of the only ones that provide genuine feedback on the things you’re reacting to. Love it!
One of my all time favorite bands! And Rose Tattoo is one of my all time favorite songs, I would love to see you do that one
The Kilburn High Road, Laura and May the Living be Dead are also great, oh and Tobacco Island. Man they're all great.
They make their blend of different styles of music work incredible well. Rough yet sophisticated, and doused with melancholy and/or sharp humor.
YES! Finally :D
Never mind your other videos. This is the best one yet !. I hope you can do another video to see another very touching side of Dropkick Murphy. Wish You Were here. It will bring a tear to your eye.
Dropkick Murphy Rules !.
I think now we gotta get the Pogues "fairytale of new York" on the channel
Oh yes
This is by far the Band I've seen live the most times...love them!
Always a great party when they come to town :)
Merry Christmas from Sweden 🌲🍾
With the Irish theme, you need to hear Zombie by The Cranberries. Heavy guitar with folk undertones. Amazing vocals and powerful lyrics about The Troubles in Ireland/UK
Merry Christmas Ms. Zharoff! I hope that it is beautiful, bright, and full of joy and love!
I bet who ever rented that home to them for a ‘Christmas Party’ is regretting it 😂.
Time for the Next installment of KoRn!!😊 love your work.
I wish you were here is another great song of theirs. Not many songs bring me to tears but that one caught me out.
Dropkick Murphys?? Holy crap, there's a name I've not hear din a loooong time. This will be interesting to see.
It was great 😊
I have it in my will that they play that at my funeral
The Irish Dancers and the JFK poster are great touches. They have some great songs and the piper is fantastic.
Love Dopkick Murphys! Some of my favorites are: The Boys are Back, Rose Tattoo, and The Prisoner Song.
Thank you for doing this song and this band! You are awesome and the willingness to play along and enjoy the crazy sing along is great. I love the dropkicks and I appreciate your willingness to take them seriously.
Elizabeth: "That teddy bear has clearly not been loved on enough by that dog!"
The lyrics, almost immediately: "He defiled my teddy bear and left me the mess!"
Well, that didn't age well ....
Dropkick Murphys are such a great band. I love seeing them live.
Yes! One of my favorite Xmas songs! 😂 can’t wait for this one.
The handheld drum for those unaware is called a Bodhran, (pronounced bow-rahn). It has a really wonderful sound as do all Celtic instruments.
the Murphies have such fun music, great choise!
Love the Dropkick Murphys! So many great songs, it would be amazing to hear you dive deeper. They bring a lot of energy, fun, good times with friends, sing a longs, amazing music, etc.
Yaaaaas!
The single headed drum is called a bodhrán. It can be played with the hand or a tipper, which is called a cipin.
(My favorite is This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground), by Set It Off.)
I’d love to see you do more punk rock in the future!
This song is always a highlight of the holiday season for me!
Vocal style? He's always there and he always delivers the lyrics. There's a ringing endorsement 😅
Dropkick Murphys are ledgends in this genre. The special instruments indeed make them stand out. You have to see them live.
Looking forward to this one. I hope something from Halford's Winter Songs will be next.
Yes great album. We Three Kings, Come All Ye Faithful, and O Holy Night are the best 3 songs in my opinion.
😁CelticPunkRockChristmas 😁Where's the black beer? Where are the redhead women? 😁
Seriously? Ye dinna want Elizabeth to channel her inner Maureen O'Hara, laddie!
@@brucejones950 You mean Maureen FitzSimons from Baile Átha Cliath? 😁
One of my favorite Christmas songs. It comes up a lot on my punk Christmas spotify playlist.
Christmas comedy this time around, lol.
Always a fun experience with this group
I love drop kick! I love the song TESSIE so much my wife and I named our daughter tess lol. They have an entire ST. Patty's day album from Boston and it's glorious. During covid they were doing live shows on FB bc their fan base couldn't come to shows so they were doing free Facebook shows
saw them live many years ago in norway and i was exhausted after the concert but so happy and when they started playing going out in style there where thousands singing along, so fun
hi Elizabeth i hope you see this comment, please react to the band PARAMORE especially the song "the news" that came out a little while ago or "misery business".
☝️☝️👆👆 Let's talk 👆⬆️📦🏆.
This song is fun. If you’re feeling the holiday blues, this is a fantastic cure.
I love your comments and especially your reactions! I really love this channel!!!!!!
I have had an annual tree for the last three years...we decorate it for each season but it always stays up....thank you for supporting this!! I knew there was a reason I have subscribed for so long... we think alike!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my favorite Christmas 🎁! No need to open any more. Thank you!
Everything in this music video…it’s EVERY city in New England.
Man…I love it!
I love the Dropkick Murphys. One of my favourite punk bands ever
This is actually my all time favourite christmas song. Hilarious lyrics and completely original.
The expression on your face at 11:33 - priceless.
Pets are always another level of "mean". The spoiled little creatures with a intelligence of a 5 years old (times 7 in dogs years).
