The second guitarist is Dicky Betts. He is legendary in Southern Rock. He and Duane (Skydog) were the standard for every 2 guitar rock band that followed.

Dicky Betts, to my mind, really provided the "it" factor. He provided some great guitar licks. He really stirred the creative juices for both brothers I believe.

The key to listening to Fillmore East, if you want to know who is who in the recording: Dickey is in the right channel, Duane is the left. Kind of like the way they lined up on stage. Likewise, Butch is in the right channel, Jaimoe the left. Skydog Lives.

@@HRConsultant_Jeff I love Dickey Betts, he had a different sound being a banjo player before a guitarist. More happy majors lol. He didn't get the credit Duane was getting and there is nothing to take away from him, he was that damn good. But to those who say Dickey was just rhythm? play them "Southbound" there are other great leads he has done, that one hits you in the face though. it makes me smile.

Fillmore East was in NYC; Fillmore West was in San Francisco. And just remember for the future, this is the last time that you will see Duane live because he died about a month or 2 after this concert, in fact the live double album from this concert which put the Allman Brothers on the map, came out after Duane Allman tragically died in a motorcycle accident. The next album Eat a Peach went through the roof, and it was a double album tribute to Duane. Duane was on just 3 songs on what was supposed to be a single album. But they put on the 3 songs Duane played on the same side and added two more cuts from their Fillmore concert, this song and Trouble No More which highlighted Duane's amazing slide guitar. This became Side 3. Side 1 had 3 great new songs, recorded after Duane's death, two by Gregg Allman and one by Dickey Betts, who now was also the only lead guitarist left. Side 2 and 4 are the Mountain Jam, a 45-minute jam that saw the original incarnation of the band, with Duane and Dickey trading licks all the way, one last time.

@@BigCarmine The Fillmore East archives shows that Johnny Winter and Elvin Bishop were also on the bill for the March 11-13 shows. However, Wikipedia indicates the 3/12 & 3/13 shows were recorded. Additionally, there were also two performances per night.
On one of the numerous releases of the album, Elvin Bishop sings Drunken Hearted Boy to close the final show that ended 6:00 AM. It's hard to piece together all the information, but regardless, there's no doubt in my my mind that At the Fillmore East is the finest live album ever released that inevitably propelled the Allman Brothers Band to their rightful place in rock history.
It's truly unfortunate that Duane would die 7 months later riding his harley, and then Berry also dying in another tragic motorcycle wreck a year later after Duane. I just can't imagine the music that would have been created by the ABB, had they lived longer...

I’m glad y’all got to meet The Allman Brothers Band. They put on the most amazing live show I’ve ever seen, with no tricks, just musicianship. They had a connection that was nearly telepathic. Two of these originals are still alive: Dickey Betts and Jaimoe the drummer. I know it’s long, but you should do “Whipping Post” from the Fillmore East. It’s definitive. There’s also Dickey Betts’ “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed”, Gregg Allman’s “Dreams”, and a great version of “Stormy Monday”. Thanks.

Duane died at 24. I think Fillmore he was 22 . Greg was 19. 20. They were country kids who grew up with gospel, country, bluegrass. Duane was playing with the stars at 17. Just think is They could have 3 or for more years with Duane.

Guys This is a killer album. Check out In Memory of Elizabeth Read, and Stormy Monday. One of the only road bands. To play that tight live. And I warned you both about Dickie & Dwayne. Arguably the best guitar duo in all of Rock. And I believe their also the first great band to use 2 drummers ❤

First saw ABB in June 1974 at Georgia Jam and am closing in on 68. Still love ABB. Another example of Gregg's singing talents can be found in him singing Slip Away. Some blue eyed soul right there !

I'm a huge fan of the Allman Brothers band and I'm so happy you both enjoy their music. Just in case you're interested this band continues to this day, with some of the members being related to the founding members. Here's a live performance of them singing one of the original band's popular songs "The Allman Betts Band - Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers Band Cover)" and the second lead guitarist was Dickey Betts he's a guitar G.O.A.T also. And this is a live performance "Allman Brothers Band - Come On In My Kitchen" the Rhythm & Blues duo Delaney and Bonnie recorded the song in an acoustic medley with Duane Allman on Dobro, released on their 1971 album "Motel Shot" RIP: Duane, Gregg, Berry, and Butch 🔥💔🙏 U R Missed
another tragic fact is that on Nov. 11, 1972 barely over a year after Duane Allman's death, Berry Oakley (bassist) is killed in a motorcycle accident only a few blocks from where Duane Allman's fatal motorcycle accident occurred a year earlier. This band is from Georgia...this is truly southern rock at it's best. Wonderful reaction guys thanks so much for sharing

Duane Allman (Guitar and Slide Guitar) was a producer and session musician in Muscle Schoals, AL before the 2nd attempt at an Allman Bros. Band. Duane famously worked with Aretha Franklin and Percy Sledge.
When Duane and Greg Allman and the band decided to try again is when they had success.
The entire band are Session class musicians. They can (and do) play anything from Rock, to Blues, to Country, to Gospel, to Funk, to Jazz.
This was an interacial, long-haired, hippie band from Jacksonville, FL in 1970 who played Instrumental Jazz live at a concert ("In Memory of Elizabeth Reed") and it freakin' sold Platinum level records.

Love the Allman Bros and love you're loving them. As far as the double drummers goes, the Grateful Dead were first with that with Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart. Went to a few concerts in the late 60s and many, many of them in the 70s. Saw the Dead several times live but never got to see the Allman Bros live. Would have loved to! ✌❤
    PS
Duane Allman was guitarist on the left playing slide, Dickie Betts with the dark brown hair on the right. ✌

Grateful Dead started out as a 1 drummer band then added Mickey to the band. Allmans were formed during a jam session which had 2 drummers & because of the amazing chemistry that happened in that room that day, Duane formed his band & invited his brother Gregg to come be their lead singer & songwriter. It just so happened that Dickey was a songwriter too! Allman Brothers fell upon the 2 drummer idea without copying Grateful Dead. The 2 bands sound & playing styles were quite different too. Both were improvisational, but so different. Allman bros were the ultimate fusion band of all styles fused together imo.

The Holy Trio of Southern Rock is Lynard Skynard, Little Feat, & The Allman Bros. Band.
Skynard leans into the Metal and Blues sound.
Little feat is Funk and Country Phychadelic Rock & The Allmans are heavy into the Blues side 💙 side of Rock with a lot of open Phychadelic jams.

Add to that, your smiles ❤ Bravo!!!

The ABB are special, having 2 of the greatest guitarists trading licks with Greag on keyboards & vocals and that smokin’ rhythm section. The Grateful Dead, the other of the 2 best jam bands, also employed 2 drummers beginning in 1967. You really should listen to the entire Love at Fillmore East LP, then Europe ‘72 by the Grateful Dead. Love your reactions. ✌️❤️🎶

You guys are *gettin it* ! I do believe The Allmans are the first rock band to have 2 drummers - and the combo of Butch Trucks (the freight train) and Jaimo who was originally a jazz drummer (and also played with Otis Redding) and adding Berry Oakley on bass (one of the most under appreciated bassists in history) was a HUGE and amazing rhythm section. Their sound was BIG and so, so tight. The album "Live at Fillmore East" is in the national archives as a "significant" work of art, just FYI. In my opinion, it is the greatest live album ever recorded. If y'all wanna check out other tunes from that album I suggest "Hot 'Lanta" (so tight it's hard to tell that it's being played live, and if you listen closely the genius of Berry Oakley on bass is clearly evident), or "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" - a mix of scorching Blues, Jazz, and rock with amazing guitar solos by Duane. That recording was done more than 50 years ago and the oldest member of the band at that time was 24n years old.... The beauty and maturity of the music and the unreal musicianship is just... magic ! And y'all talked about Gregg.... definitely one of the very best ever! He was *21 or 22* when this was recorded - unbelievable ! Check out his performance on "Whipping Post" from that album - it's absolutely legendary ! Great video my guys ! Thanks for showing love to the Allman Brothers Band !

These guys INVENTED Southern Rock which is Blues-Rock and even a little Southern Country rolled with some jazzy chords just for taste. Duane was a Swamper at Muscle Shoals Studio and played the guitar on Wilson Pickett's cover of the Beatles "Hey Jude". Dickie Betts the other guitarist studied jazz and he gives it those taste chords and modal lines.
