    Great video phil, never targeted flounders but will give it a crack, for some reason I assumed they were a summer species. Have to say I’ve been waiting eagerly for the cod video part 2.. still after 1 myself and saw the beut you caught in the competition. Congrats 👍.

    • @BanditFishingUK
      @BanditFishingUK  3 года назад

      We catch flounder all year but in different areas. Usually it’s as simple as beaches in summer and estuaries in winter. I believe the flounders are still in the rivers in summer but it’s impossible to get through the crab in the warmer months.
      We have been trying to record a second cod video but we have been unlucky with just getting other species so far. We plan to push on and get a few more videos as soon as we can. Thanks for watching Matt 👍🏼

    • @BanditFishingUK

      When the tide isn’t pulling to hard you can have the rods parallel to the water. This exaggerates the bites more than having them facing the water so you will see the smaller plucks easier

    great video Bandit! I've always struggle with deep hooking flatties. you should have a look at billyfishing's video, he fished with lug on hairs and circle hooks. great technique for preventing deep hooking.
    also maddies are small rag right?

    • @BanditFishingUK
      @BanditFishingUK  3 года назад

      We haven’t tried circles but if you look at our video “surf fishing” on Cefn Sidan beach Lloyd demonstrates how to get the hook out of deep hooked flatties with minimal damage.

    Hi Philip, great video. I'm based in Poole Harbour so have always been able to target the Flounder, we even have a league set up to fish for them October to mid January. However with this now being a Bass nursery, 4 breading pairs of seals introduced and the illegal netting for crab pot baits, the last few years have been terrible. I have friends in Barry that we may be able to visit in January (Covid rules allowing) and never knew this estuary was a hot spot. How long to they go on for? I have searched Google maps and think I have narrowed your location down, but the only football pitches I can spot are those by the Pavilion Cafe / Tramway Rd.... am I close ??

    • @BanditFishingUK
      @BanditFishingUK  3 года назад

      This is nearer the Gateway Resort (Caravan Park). The flounders seem to have thinned out a bit going on recent reports so you might have to wait until next year for the estuaries. October and November seem to have been the best months over the last few years. Smaller tides are best.
      The nearby surf beaches will start producing from April if you really want to try around here. Cheers Mike 👍🏼🎣

    • @mikegale2100
      @mikegale2100 3 года назад +2

      Great, have located it now...... a weekend in Oct / Nov now planned, we only use full rag in Poole harbour so I presume maddies will need to be sourced !! Is Dragon Baits a good shout?

    • @BanditFishingUK
      @BanditFishingUK  3 года назад +1

      Maddies are number one with it without lug/black lug on the hook first. Dragon baits are spot on but make sure you call them before you go to make sure. Also Anglers Corner in Llanelli will have worm

    Problem with Loughor is that theres a lot of Filipino people that snag fish down there
    Every bloody summer you see large groups of them using multiple treble hooks with a heavy weight and they snag everything from Flounder to Bass to Mullet keeping absolutely everything they catch regardless of size or species.

      They are a very underrated eating fish.

    • @BanditFishingUK
      @BanditFishingUK  3 года назад

      Most of the marks near Cardiff docks you’ll have to move up and down with the tide sadly. You can get away with a small beach shelter at “the boulders” on the foreshore but only on the smallest tides

  • @TheRealColt
    @TheRealColt 3 года назад

    A couple of questions mate, I’d much appreciate any feedback, even other viewers could answer if they see fit. Have you ever had much luck using shop bought baits which are unconventional. So like no worms or squid but like fish baits mackerel and herring or prawns. I’ve tried prawns once down my local river spot and I caught a crab but the tide and wind direction was unfavourable and the chop in the river was mental. Wool prawns catch me a flattie? Also you mention a mainline -shockleader combo, is that necessary, I run low diameter 80lb braid straight through to a 60lb rig body- either pulley pennel, two hook flapper or up and over rigs with 25lb hook snoods and 25lb rotten bottom. Keep me right is this a recipe for success or am I missing something important out. If it’s quality baits like worm cart or squid that makes all the difference let me know. Any replies would be sweet as a nut 🥜 dipped in chocolate cheers

    • @BanditFishingUK
      @BanditFishingUK  3 года назад

      In our local estuaries (South Wales) worm is key. Especially maddies/harbour rag.
      Bigger flounder will often be caught on peeler crab too. Worm tipped with mackerel can give you an edge on a rare occasion but I wouldn’t go out after flounder with fish baits alone.
      Shellfish such as cockles, clams and razor fish can be great on the clean beaches especially after a blow.
      Prawns could pick up fish if they are present where you fish. They are certainly worth a go.
      There’s no need for a shock leader if your mainline is that strong. We stick to the 10lb in strength of shock per 1oz of lead weight so your braid is more than enough for lobbing these smaller leads.
      Flapper rigs are generally all you need for flounders. Concentrate on keeping all your hooks close to the seabed by either adding a small bullet weight to the top of your rig body, leaving your mainline slack or by keeping the rod tips as low as possible.
      I hope that helps. Of course the above is my opinion and others may disagree.
      Keep it simple for flounders is the best advice - three hook flappers with size 2 hooks, keep the hooks on the bottom, quality bait, find features and cast regularly.
