It is easier to manage sea empire then land one because of logistics. Just imagine how hard to support cities in Siberia during victorian era. Siberia was more populated and civilised place, then Americas or Africa for example. ExMongol empire Khanates built walled cities, had disciplined armies and gunpowder arty. But Russia was a part of Mongolian empire aswell, so I think it made expansion and integration easier. The difference between western European empires and Russia is that Russia integrated new ethnicities on equal rights with main population. So Russia still consists of 150+ different ethnicities and control large territory.
Thank you ever so much for sticking to the facts without political opinion. You are entitled to your own viewpoint of course but this is truly a breathe of fresh air.
He's saying that because of Greenland. Greenland is legally a part of Denmark, even though they have autonomous home rule to some extent. Denmark represents Greenland on an international level, and Greenland depends on Denmark financially. Greenland has a hell of a lot more area than Denmark, but also a hell of a lot less population. Similarly, Asian Russia (Siberia) has 3 times the land area of European Russia, but only has 1/3 the population. So Asian Russia and Greenland are both sparsely populated expanses of the host country that are technically on a different continent than the country's capital and main population center. Greenland/Denmark is a much more extreme case in terms of population and land area. Greenland has 50 times the land area of Denmark, and not even 1% of the population.
u wrong, i'm russian, and this video hurts me. Russia is a European country, it was founded in europe, most russian citizens are europeans, russian culture is a european one, i'm not fkn asian ;(
That's a great video, I'm really glad you point out all of this, especially the arbitrarity of the so-called border between Europe and Asia. I wish you mentioned the Caucasus too though. As a north-caucasian, it really frustrates me, how North is considered Europe and South is considered Asia. The whole of Caucasus has been surrounded by asian cultures since earliest civilizations. We've had nomadic iranian and turkic peoples to the north and Persia and (now) Turkey to the south. There was of course Byzantium as well, but even in Byzantium itself, everything to the east of Bosphorus was considered Asia. A lot of territories to the north of Caucasus (which is Southern Russia) were turkic-speaking in 19th century.
Russia is а european country that took possession of North Asia, in which very few people live. Taking into account the fact the people from central, west (Belorussia) and south (Ukraine) Russia colonizated Siberia, Siberia is a Europeanized territory like North America or Australia and New Zealand (of course, taking into account local specifics). P.S. Russians do not think in therms of races, we think in therms of nations and ethnic groups in contrast to Western countries.
Definitely Europeans. Russians may have their own Russian soul that's very complex and intricate, but they consider themselves European Russian literature, painting, classical music and ballet are not just close to European ones, they have become a solid part of the European culture, making a noticeable dent into European mentality and cultural coordinate system. For Russians, this culture is the core of their identity. Peter the Great built St. Petersburg to mimic Venice Tsars had their court speak French. When Tolstoy/Pushkin/Dostoyevsky wrote their masterpieces, the main language in court was French Russians are Eastern Orthodox (a variant of Christianity), so they fall into the European camp more than the "wrong religion Asians" Their singers compete in Eurovision Their oligarchs own real estate in Europe, own the Chelsea Football Club in England, send their kids to study in England and launder their money through Swiss bank accounts Russians have a very derogatory termin for anybody who comes from the 'stan (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, etc) republics which are decidedly more Asian - "чуркестан", which roughly means "idiot-stan" Also in the European part of Russia, the lives of 75% of Russian and focuses the entire economy. Whereas in the Asian part of the lives of only 25%.
Mac Productions To be fair both Australia and Israel are extremely Europeanized. Australia being an Anglophonic country with strong cultural and ethnic ties to the British Isles and Israel being a country mostly inhabited by Jews of European heritage.
As Russian I can tell that this question bothers some people even today. Threw the whole history no one questioned this matter until Peter the great. Some thought Russia is Europeen and others thought Russia is just Russia- it has its own way. I know for fact that most people from Moscow and Petersburg consider them selves as Europeen, but there are more than 200 ethnicities in this country, so you wont hear same answer every where. I borned in far east, close to Japan, China and Korea. There are many Asians and Russians (Or Russian Asians), who am I? Well, can't call my self Europeen, neither Asian... Funny thing is people in Russia differ a lot from each other by culture and even manners. (simmilar but different) good video btw, can see you made some research

Well kind of. That is a very simple way of describing a historical complex set of political, cultural and geographic based arguments on a European and Asian border. I would argue that it is more a cultural boarder in some parts than physical. I know that Georgia, Azerbaijan and even parts of Armenia may have something to say about the greater Caucuses for instance or on the reverse side a far western town in Kazakhstan is unlikely to identify as anything other than central Asian. Yes a set of physical landmarks exist as a divide, yet some of those are still disputed. I think the continents should be: The America's Eurasia Oceania Antarctica or if you want you could separate the America's but they are better combined
Eurasia was already the plan made back then, and many people liked the idea including Russians but Europeans didn't agree with the fact of them joining as a safe continent with poor countries of Asia. Africa on the other side is just a link/bridge between this continent but the land between Asia and Europe is totally the same Anne not just connected, is the same land/continent, and many people in the world say that it is supposed to be a single continent, but Europeans Don't accept Asians. That's the problem.

the culture of the country is determined more by religion than geography. Look at the similarities between Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox countries. Sunni and Shiite, Hindu and Buddhist, and you will understand that religion is the decisive factor in determining the relevance of culture to larger groups, in this case Russia is an Orthodox state. Orthodoxy is peculiar to the whole of Eastern Europe. If we talk about who we are, Asians, or Europeans, I will answer that we are all Europeans of Orthodox culture will be the ideal answer.

I'm not sure if the Indian Subcontinent should be considered a different continent. Europe should definitely not be considered one either. Eurasia is the best option I think. And while the Indian subcontinent is incredibly unique should we divide continents based on culture? But the question you posed is a good one and I would like to do a video on what continents are and why they are separated the way they are.
That is true. And people shouldn't generalise either groups of people like that either. But I assume people from other continents do it too. When people talk about Europeans, they usually mean French,Germans, or British. How often are they talking about Swiss or Croatians. Or when people talk about Africans? When people discuss South Americans half the time they are talking about Mexicans (Who are from North America). That is the trouble with combining continents with cultures. Every single Asian country is unique and should not be grouped together as "Asian". The same goes for Europe(although it isn't a continent), Africa, The Americas, and Oceania.
Culture and Racial superiority (conceived from the colonial era) acts as the way people perceive the today's world. And the Indian Subcontinent lies on a entirely different tectonic plate.
Russian is in Europe when it's about beating records such as the highest building but when you tell about culture there are like "noo we aren't Europe"
Technically you could even say that there are only four continents if you’re basing it on connected land. The Americas are connected, so that makes one. Europe, Asia, and Africa are also all connected by land, so that makes two. Then the only other two independent continents are Australia and Antarctica, so that makes four continents.

I love what Cogito says at the end about Eurasia (or Asiurope). It's a single continent. The idea of Europe being separate is a Eurocentric idea. When people use the cultural division argument, I point out that the Middle East and India have cultures just as distinct from their neighbors as Europe. The same could be said about multiple regions of Africa.
I would say it's pretty much Europe beacause, Moscow and most of the major populated areas are far west and within the European area. Also, the Asia side(east of the Ural Mountains) is barely habited.
I am from Indonesia Russia is very big and spacious and spacious :) until I was confused that Russia entered Europa or Asia, finally I got lost here, thank you.
1:52 ...."According to the Greeks (which the Europeans based their geography on), Russia was in Asia." .....So, which geographical feature did the Greeks identify as the border between Europe and Asia? The Dardanelles and the Bosporus Strait, in their area, was obvious; but what about the land demarcation north of the Black Sea? ...After doing a little web research, apparently it was Ptolemy who defined the boundary; and he had it going through the Kerch Strait into the Sea of Azov and then following the Don River. North of the Don River is less certain.
Great video! I recently started my own channel, so its nice to see a small channel putting out high quality content. I'm sure your channel will grow pretty quickly.
If we are considering Europe and Asia as a continent, then Africa would be there too, 'cause the only division between these continents is a man-made canal but that would make things more complicated. Great video BTW!
Asia is a continent. Europe is a peninsula. The word for "all of a landmass including the attached peninsulas" is just the word for the landmass. So the name of the whole continent is "Asia." So... Russia is in Asia and Europe is in Asia and the two regions overlap but neither is fully contained within the other. *Simple*
Technically, that would make Africa a peninsula, and South America too. So i also prefer to separate Africa while keeping the americas as it's own continent. I agree that Europe is just Asia, but where would be the limits? Personally, an aproximmate straigh line from the Don Delta to the Onega Delta.

Russia's capital Moscow and 80% of its population is within its European part. Russians are Slavic. Russia is a European state that expanded into Asia through colonisation. Generally the location is not "Asia". Nobody lives in Russia's Asian part . Russia is Eastern European.
Filipinos are Asian. I mean what else are they? The Philippines is in Asia. Now, this dispute whether Russia is a part of Europe, comes from the vastness of Russia's geography, and the fact that it spans both Europe and Asia. Now, anybody who knows, even just a little bit of Russia; would understand that it is a European country, by almost all terms. It simply expanded into Asia by colonisation.
Although Europe is divided into two civilizations - the Western (Rome, Catholicism, Protestantism) and the Eastern (Constantinople, Orthodoxy), I think that, nevertheless, in basic cultural and civilizational terms, Europe stretches from Lisbon to Vladivostok. In the modern world, which is not surprising, national origin is not so important, the main thing is who you consider yourself to be, to whom you belong and in what environment you grew up, because I think many small peoples of Russia (Tatars, peoples of the Caucasus, Buryats, Kalmyks, etc.) can also be considered Europeans, since, while preserving their own culture, from childhood they also receive European cultural influence in the form of Russian culture built on the basis of Orthodoxy. Actually we can go even further and say that Europe is a space from L.A. to Vladivostok, since the white Americans who built America are former Europeans ;-) And it’s a pity that in history there were such Russophobic politicians who claimed that Russia is Asia (in a bad way) and that Russians are a bunch of wild hordes. They still exist, especially in Ukraine, where they openly declare that we are Untermensch, that we are not Slavs, and that we have neither history nor culture.
Europe does not exist. ‘Europe’ is in Asia. No, the Ural mountains are minor mountains that are extremely easy to cross. Lol, nowhere are mountains considered a separation, all of which are way higher.
Russia's capital Moscow and 80% of its population is within its European part. Russians are Slavic. Russia is a European state that expanded into Asia through colonisation. Generally the location is not "Asia". Nobody lives in Russia's Asian part.
Fun fact: in russia europe and asia are different parts of the world (we have such term for cultural groups), but they are considered the same continent (for us, continent is something sorrounded by water).
There is a version that the colonies of Russia were the same lands in Asia, beyond the Ural Mountains. So we can assume that these internal colonies have been preserved until now, since all the money from the Asian part goes to the west of Russia (and politicians are in your pocket)
It is interesting how roughly 75% of Russia's land is in Asia, while roughly 75% of the population lives in the European part.

I am from Russia and we consider ourselves Russian not European or Asian. I am from a place about 100 miles from Asia so... it's your decision.

Russian literature, painting, classical music and ballet are not just close to European ones, they have become a solid part of the European culture, making a noticeable dent into European mentality and cultural coordinate system. For Russians, this culture is the core of their identity.
Peter the Great built St. Petersburg to mimic Venice
Tsars had their court speak French. When Tolstoy/Pushkin/Dostoyevsky wrote their masterpieces, the main language in court was French
Russians are Eastern Orthodox (a variant of Christianity), so they fall into the European camp more than the "wrong religion Asians"
Their singers compete in Eurovision
Their oligarchs own real estate in Europe, own the Chelsea Football Club in England, send their kids to study in England and launder their money through Swiss bank accounts
Russians have a very derogatory termin for anybody who comes from the 'stan (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, etc) republics which are decidedly more Asian - "чуркестан", which roughly means "idiot-stan"
Also in the European part of Russia, the lives of 75% of Russian and focuses the entire economy. Whereas in the Asian part of the lives of only 25%.

I agree for the most part, but in fact St. Petersburg was built to mimic Amsterdam
Mac Productions To be fair both Australia and Israel are extremely Europeanized. Australia being an Anglophonic country with strong cultural and ethnic ties to the British Isles and Israel being a country mostly inhabited by Jews of European heritage.
x_MySecretShadows_x They've also had pretty extensive contact with Asian groups like Mongols, Persians, Turkic peoples, etc.
Couch Grouches wait, what, Persians and Turkic people are Asians?
As Russian I can tell that this question bothers some people even today. Threw the whole history no one questioned this matter until Peter the great. Some thought Russia is Europeen and others thought Russia is just Russia- it has its own way.
I know for fact that most people from Moscow and Petersburg consider them selves as Europeen, but there are more than 200 ethnicities in this country, so you wont hear same answer every where.
I borned in far east, close to Japan, China and Korea. There are many Asians and Russians (Or Russian Asians), who am I? Well, can't call my self Europeen, neither Asian...

Do a video on why The Indian Subcontinent should be considered a separate continent as it lot different than the rest of Asia
Whenever the Americans or the Europeans talk about Asians they mostly mean the East Asians namely the Chinese, the Japanese and the Koreans.
Cogito europe is a continents. culture, people, language arent the same as asia nor africa.

@@mrantipatia1872 But if Europe can be separated due only to history and culture, than why not the Middle East and India?

...After doing a little web research, apparently it was Ptolemy who defined the boundary; and he had it going through the Kerch Strait into the Sea of Azov and then following the Don River. North of the Don River is less certain.

Asia is a continent.
Europe is a peninsula.
The word for "all of a landmass including the attached peninsulas" is just the word for the landmass. So the name of the whole continent is "Asia."
So... Russia is in Asia and Europe is in Asia and the two regions overlap but neither is fully contained within the other.
*Simple*
If that's the case than east Asia should be a peninsula since it's different from the rest of the world
Technically, that would make Africa a peninsula, and South America too.
So i also prefer to separate Africa while keeping the americas as it's own continent.

But there were no next war against Britain, so selling Alaska was in vain, we might as well keep the region(((

Reminds me of how Filipinos constantly debate whether they are Asian or Pacific Islander… I chalk it up to a little bit of both
Filipinos are Asian.

Мне тувинцы и буряты ментально ближе, чем лгбт повестка европы. не европейцы мы, мы русские!
It's a federation so there are many republics like Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and so on
Russia is both. It's Eurasia
Actually we can go even further and say that Europe is a space from L.A. to Vladivostok, since the white Americans who built America are former Europeans ;-)
And it’s a pity that in history there were such Russophobic politicians who claimed that Russia is Asia (in a bad way) and that Russians are a bunch of wild hordes. They still exist, especially in Ukraine, where they openly declare that we are Untermensch, that we are not Slavs, and that we have neither history nor culture.
“Are you a Europe or Asia?”

Russia is it's own continent, after all, Russia is bigger than Australia so it could be, acording to size, a continent.
There is a version that the colonies of Russia were the same lands in Asia, beyond the Ural Mountains. So we can assume that these internal colonies have been preserved until now, since all the money from the Asian part goes to the west of Russia (and politicians are in your pocket)
Eurasia?
