I remember hating on the new colors (lol) on some video of the first volume. But now I can see that they are absolutely gorgeous in their own right. It’s like a completely new book because of the drastically different environment and atmosphere that the new colors create. You get to experience the same story in two very unique ways, both equally amazing. Big respect to the new colorist, you can see he put a lot of effort into this. It just proves once more how our natural instinct is to feel negatively towards the unfamiliar and strange. I’ll probably wait for the omnibus though. Is there a date on that?
My history with Swampy goes back to the first Wein /Wrightson issue. I have all the Moore issues & as much as I love them & the original colors, I`m not offended by Oliff`s recoloring in the least. I think it actually enhances the art. I can`t wait to get mine & enjoy my single favorite issue , A Murder Of Crows all over again in the over-sized format.
@Ryan Wilson Until the early 80`s comics were printed on newsprint which meant that only limited colors could be used & the printing quality was not the best. Companies began using other stocks of paper in the mid-80`s that produced better results & also caused a rise in cost. Mando paper was used for general release comics & more prestigious projects were released on a heavier, whiter stock called Baxter paper which was even more expensive. The upside was that better printing & computer separated colors were also used & the books looked great. Comics were not always collectables but cheap , disposable entertainment for the masses. Almost every child read them but to reach the levels we`re used to now comics have almost priced themselves out of existence. Few children can pay current prices & most parents are loathe to pay $ 5- $7.00 for 22 pages of content. Most children get their comics from television & movies nowadays. Which is sad.
Thank goodness I have the original versions. I feel like the new coloring made everything look soft and artificial, and I absolutely agree they take away from the details too.
I actually like the old colors better, usually I go for the modern but damn the old ones are much more fitting to the story. I started collecting the trades for this run and it seems like the way to go for me :D
I actually prefer the recolour. And the re-sizing too! :D I mean, its not a remake of an old comic... its a new product using some of the content from an older comic. But its all pretty subjective.
Coloring was limited in books of the past, sometimes a recoloring can bring out the true vision the artist had intended but couldnt do at the time. I think it looks fine and the swamps have never looked better.
I'm spamming at this point but look at 12:12. Damn! The one on the left is a magical work of art. The one on the right is comic ipecac. Is this Alan Moore's curse at work?
Omar if I could like this twice I would. I've been waiting quite a while to pick these two up, I really hope they will be in stock. Great video as usual thank you for the content man.
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing is one of his most memorable and transformative works. He evolved, or retro conned, a tropey bog monster into a mystical elemental demi God whilst providing commentary on society culture & other issues, by simply twisting the cliche of "the monster who thought he was a man" into "the plant who thinks he's a man". And Moore together with Stephen Bissette & John Totleben (my fav) take us on an unforgettable journey through the various corners of the DCU while introducing us to new characters and adding new depth to familiar faces. I cannot recommend this book, this run, enough to fans who want to see how high comics can fly. I wish there were more stories like this today...
I appreciate you showing the side by side of the colors. I don’t personally care since I’m not getting the book(anytime soon at least), but I can see why some people don’t love it. Regardless, thanks for the vid as always, Omar! :)
I don’t have a big problem with recolors myself. I read Simonson’s Thor run for the first time in my custom bound two volume edition, which had the original floppies. I recently got the official Omnibus, and I like having nice bright colors instead of faded, almost 40 year old newsprint pages. I do love and appreciate both, personally.
I will pick up this volume. Got vol. 1 on order. I can understand the recoloring complaints, but I am not familiar with this material so I can get into it without being distracted by the changes.
I think it is completely disrespectful to recolour and old comic. I don't understand more readable. Yes it is just like the George Lucas thing. Or Steven Spielberg erasing the guns and turning them into walkie talkies.

Top notch review and comparison Omar! I definitely will be getting this one. Even with the recoloring, Absolutes are the way to go wit the art for Spampy. 1 more volume to go! YAY
Thanks for the sideby side color comparison. For me the older coloring serves the art much better...but I ll still collect this version because I want this story in the larger size.
I'm so excited to get this. I had to pre-order another copy vol 1 because my first copy fell apart. My absolute hush fell apart too. Hopefully I have good luck with this one and my binding doesn't come apart.
@@NearMintCondition still water with the vampires was just so good and my favorite nuckface papers was just a good ghost story vibe but groth patterns with Constantine takes the cake for me
Regarding recoloring, I think in many cases it really is a case of having gotten used to the original coloring as opposed to it being better than the new. The same thing can happen when listening to music, particularly with Classical since pieces are recorded many times by different performers over the years. You get used to a particular performance and when you hear a different recording of the same piece, it may sound 'off' to you, not the way your brain thinks it should sound. Just a theory, but I can't help but wonder how people would react if Oliff's coloring was the original, and the original coloring was now the new.
My preorder of this turned up at my LCS this Wednesday (21st Oct), so some places may already have this. Maybe a quirk of DC's distribution arrangements? Read some of this in single issues and old trades, new colour I am ok with, but also like having both versions.
That's because your LCS could get this from Random House. Omar's wrong when he says the Direct Market gets books two weeks ahead now. Since DC split from Diamond, trades all come out on the same date and bookstores get DCs at least a week before the Direct Market and put them out as soon as they get them.
DC reverting back to the original colors on the Batman Tales of the Demon book gives me hope that they might use the originals in a future omnibus. I love what Oliff did with Akira (release it!) but this looks hideous to me. The shot of Constantine you highlighted was the nail in the coffin. Too bad, cause I adore the velvet moss design of these editions. Keep up the good work Omnar!
I don't even mind a recolor in theory, but IMO the lazy blending on the lighting lacks finesse, whereas the original feels bold and purposeful. I love irrational art [I am that] but when objects are shaded shiny in multiple places without establishing firm physical lighting sources it triggers the uncanny valley in my brain. AY CARAMBA, BAH HUMBUG & HAKUNA MATATA!
The binding is incredible! DC's Absolute Editions always seem to have phenomenal binding except for the occasional book such as the first absolute for Alan Moore's Swamp Thing Run
Think that's the thing about recoloring. Since this is my first time reading, it doesn't bother me. But I understand readers seeing this and saying wait a second, this is how I remember it.
There are so many pages that look too dark so I also think the modernised colours take away from the detailed artwork. Shame they couldn’t have used Tatjana’s colour schemes and worked digitally off those. I’m still getting these Absolutes but once again I’m underwhelmed by the end result.
My copy of Absolute Swamp Thing first printing has great binding. I think the problem seemed widespread because people are vocal about issues like that. I doubt 80% were faulty.
It's tough. I had sort of resigned myself to the new coloring and pre-ordered both volumes. The first sold out quick and I figured I shouldn't muck around. On the one hand the coloring is fine. Oliff is a talented colorist and seen in isolation there isn't really anything wrong here. In and of itself it looks pretty darned great. BUT, when you start to compare it against the original coloring the heart just sort of drops into the stomach. A prime example is the first page you compared. The panel with Constantine in a night club. Tatjana Wood's coloring immediately tells you where the character is. Even without the dialogue/captioning you can place the character at a glance. The new coloring is more atmospheric, and more complex than Wood's, but it kind of ignores the narrative. When you compare the two you begin to see a very real deficiency in the new coloring. It's almost as if Oliff colored the pages without a concern for how the coloring was originally used to advance the story. It's a big mistake for an experienced colorist and somewhat surprising. I hate to say it, but I'm tempted to cancel my order.
I have the first printing of volume 1 and actually liked the recoloring... rebranding with dc black label for vol 2, however, is really setting off my OCD. Bummer that dc couldn’t sort something out to keep that consistent seeing as this is supposed to be a high end archival format.
The new colors are good, actually, and I heared that the drawers and inkers of that run said that now it is how they'd like the comic to be back in the day. But if u like that run much to spend that money on it, it means that you actually not only get used to the original colors , but even like them, like myself. It was a good detail that they were supposed to give a better edition but this time is just a fail.
wow they really did change the colours ... great review again. Looking forward to getting my volume. Not fussed with the colouring changes as I haven't got the originals but the originals look better than the new modern style in this volume. Least they haven't changed the inking or the story
Counting days to my copy arrive, specially because it's completely new from this point and beyond. Thank God I don't have problems with the first volume. The black label logo does not bother me, I read too little vertigo titles to get a connection with the logo, and DC black label logo is perfect and direct on point (when I was a kid I don't know vertigo was from DC 🤦🏽♂️), and looks very nice. About the colors, I don't think it was necessary the changes, some panels are more beautiful now and others no. Thanx for the video, it is perfect.
After these Absolutes go out of print, they should print an omnibus for Moore's Swamp Thing with original colors and issue trades with new coloring for those who missed the Absolutes. I love the new colors now; they grew on me. But I want an omni with the orginal colors.
@Kev Young Better value how so? My 1-6 books cost not even the full price of the HC vol 1. But I guess each to their own. I enjoy the books for reading.
@@MrDLRUclips Yep! They are great. But an omni is oversized and it would go well with the bronze age omni. Also, that is newsprint in the trades. I have them; they're great. But I want an omni with original coloring.
I've never read yet but the old colors are by far superior, even at this quick glance, very unfortunate. I haven't seen this issue come up with many other series, can anyone point out examples or is this really the only one? IF so, why did they choose to this series to start the experiment with?
I have never read this series and I’ve been SO excited for Vol 1 & 2 of the Absolutes for the past few months b/c this was a run I always wanted to pick up in a nice edition and read. But now..... so torn.

I have the idea that nowadays a lot of people who are actually younger than me are behaving like old guys when it comes to anything that is “progressive” 😉 Should have mine next week, can’t wait. Not going to sell my HCs though as I actually prefer the original colouring.
Yeah I have never read it and am looking forward to the Omnibus. Hopefully it reads as well as The Longbow Hunters Omnibus did. Do you think there will be a MG LBH V2 omnibus? I hope so. The first one was really good.
This is prob my favorite comic run of all time, so I’m getting the Absolutes, but I’m keeping my OG HC’s & I’ll prob pick up the omni if they ever print one. That’s how much of a Swamp Thing sucker I am!
Is the 3rd already planned as another reprint? Excuse my ignorance I really never got into swamp things but this seemed like a perfect excuse to try it so I got 1,2 pre-ordered so is there a third soon or is that just speculation?
I don't really care about the recoloring. I only read this run earlier this year so I don't have the big attachment to the original artwork that others do. I'm just trying to decide if I want to get these Absolute editions or wait for an omnibus. I've only got two Absolutes (Long Halloween and All-Star Superman) and they seem more suited for individual stories than long runs.
Nice! Mine is coming next week, got it at a very good price, just need to find Vol.1 somewhere. (I'm in the uk.) How many volumes in this Moore AST run?
Imma just get the trades and do a custom bind later on down the road since I prefer the og colours and it will be a good excuse to try doing it lol (PS I havent even read Swamp Thing I 100% think the OG colours just look nicer no nostalgia bias)
I have a question regarding CheapGraphicNovels. Can you apply your store credit (if you have any) to any purchase/order that you make? Or can you only use store credit on its own? Thank you!!
i will be grabbing this and volume 3 since i've never read the material and everyone talks about this run. i don't have any nostalgia for the original colors but the idea of recoloring just seems so wrong as a principle. who would make the decision to put out a collection of an acclaimed run but with "better" colors in their eyes. how does the original colorist feel about this? and where do you draw the line, lets recolor crisis on infinite earths, hey why not watchmen that'll really get alan moore going. it just really has me feeling conflicted about buying this but i commited to it
Man Re colored looks really greet. I don't know why people have problem with this ? Someone paint my car in new nice color....i would be thankful. This looks really good.
You mentioned there will likely be an omnibus of this run. I've never read an absolute, but know they are bigger than an omni. Any thoughts on choosing between an absolute vs omnibus?
Glad Oliff got paid to basically paint this run, but I'm sticking with the originals. DC could make up for it by putting out their version of an Artist Edition, which I'd gladly buy.
I’m not sure who the recolouring is intended to appeal to. My guess is that anyone willing to drop this much money on an oversize, premium book line this is already somewhat of a fan and has an attachment to the original source material. IMHO the art works best with the original colours as well - there are some pages where I think the new colours are an improvement, but just as many that make my eyes water. (Yes, I’ve already ordered this - but I’m wondering if I should sell it and try to track down the oversize hardcovers I think they did a while back).
My boy Swamp-Thing getting another slick edition of a stellar run.

I feel like the "old guys" didn't get a chance to defend themselves here. They are just thrown in the "old guys who can't handle progress" bin lol.
Kind of off topic but do you think you will be doing JLA by Grant Morrison omnibus soon?
It's been pushed back until November. As soon as I get a copy I will be doing an overview.
I still have my volume 1 unopened because I'm too scared to see how bad the binding is in it lol
Does this volume have the velvety cover too?
It sure does.
Why doesn't it say Vertigo!! I may need to buy the reprint so they match
Swamp Thing wasn't a Vertigo title until way after Moore's run.
@@RockandrollNegro then I wish they would have made all editions Black Label then so the spines match
Is the 3rd already planned as another reprint? Excuse my ignorance I really never got into swamp things but this seemed like a perfect excuse to try it so I got 1,2 pre-ordered so is there a third soon or is that just speculation?
Nothing yet, just speculation.
@@NearMintCondition thanks for answering👍 great video as usual.
Gotta reupload this video with a disclaimer to "like that smash button"
I don't really care about the recoloring. I only read this run earlier this year so I don't have the big attachment to the original artwork that others do. I'm just trying to decide if I want to get these Absolute editions or wait for an omnibus. I've only got two Absolutes (Long Halloween and All-Star Superman) and they seem more suited for individual stories than long runs.
Great vid!
Nice! Mine is coming next week, got it at a very good price, just need to find Vol.1 somewhere. (I'm in the uk.)
How many volumes in this Moore AST run?
Will DC reprint volume 2?
I’m sure one day they will.
@@NearMintCondition I really hope so...
Imma just get the trades and do a custom bind later on down the road since I prefer the og colours and it will be a good excuse to try doing it lol (PS I havent even read Swamp Thing I 100% think the OG colours just look nicer no nostalgia bias)
Looks kinda like felt cloth to me for the cover but could be wrong.
I'll wait for the omni.
I have a question regarding CheapGraphicNovels. Can you apply your store credit (if you have any) to any purchase/order that you make? Or can you only use store credit on its own? Thank you!!
i will be grabbing this and volume 3 since i've never read the material and everyone talks about this run. i don't have any nostalgia for the original colors but the idea of recoloring just seems so wrong as a principle. who would make the decision to put out a collection of an acclaimed run but with "better" colors in their eyes. how does the original colorist feel about this? and where do you draw the line, lets recolor crisis on infinite earths, hey why not watchmen that'll really get alan moore going. it just really has me feeling conflicted about buying this but i commited to it
Omar, you mentioned this is going to be collected in an Omnibus. Is that confirmed?
Oh not official. But I’m sure it’s coming. They did it with Sandman, Preacher and Y the Last Man. Absolutes first
@@NearMintCondition Thank you sir!
decided to jump into this. never read any swamp thing comics. i blame Omar. :)
Man Re colored looks really greet. I don't know why people have problem with this ? Someone paint my car in new nice color....i would be thankful. This looks really good.
Question - Vol 1 is OOP or its coming back ??? i already ordered vol 2 but cant buy first one so far. Thanks Omar. Great video like always :)
Isn't the Boogeyman also mentioned in Sandman in the Cereal Event Story?
Yes, he is. As Mathew the Raven. :)
Is Vol 1 reprint coming out the same week?
I can't wait to sell my kidney to get all three volumes 😎
