There is something nice about the simplicity of the original coloring, it works on a level that makes certain objects pop out. I personally now wish there was an option for either. hopefully I can pick up the old hardcover editions and own both.
The Killing Joke Absolute edition contained both the new colours and original version. Not sure if other Absolute editions do that, but at least one does it.
@@shukijipota3114 It's rather... eccentric, in my view... to have a preference for dull, drab, crappy-looking colors over new and improved, vibrant-looking ones. I have the first two hardcovers of this run, and the newsprint paper stock in conjunction with the dull colors looks like shit. I was never a fan of the visual quality of those collections. So, I will take the nice, new, glossy paper and sharp colors, thank you. Vibrancy draws my eyes a helluva lot more -- and provides a helluva lot more clarity, and is a helluva lot more readable -- than muted and drab, with piss-yellow paper. Also, a lot of the white text over crushed blacks this book employs comes out smudged on the original trades, and is actually difficult to read at times.
The coloring is fine, the problem is that the saturation is off the chart. Bright saturated colors are fine for Paper Girls colors but I don't think it goes well with Swamp Thing.
I am a french speaking reader. I have been buying french comic books for 30 years and American comics for less than 10 years. In 30 years i have never encountered the binding issues i had with DC and Marvel (although it is more prevalent with DC books). Not once. I buy DC and Marvel because i love comics but American publishers are a disgrace, especially DC for the lack of respect they show towards their readers.
your videos are amazing, I specifically waited for a review of this book before purchasing, as I've never read it but wanted to see the recoloring and build quality. glad yours is the first up.
Thank you for another great review! I do not know much about Swamp Thing, but I‘m really interested in changing that. The fact that the production quality isn‘t great or even good (again!) is really frustrating. Even more frustrating than the fact that stupid collectors like me will it buy nevertheless. And now to something completely different: The name Totleben (Tot-Leben) is really, really cool. It is German and means Death-life. (I‘m from Germany.)
I've waited half a year for it. I get anything with Swamp Thing in it. I still haven't taken it out of the plastic. I agree, the colors really grab you. And i am reading these comments seeing how displeased people are with the recoloring. and the example you used when asking us to leave a comment, them embracing with the warm sky behind them. I practically live in a swamp. live in Florida my whole life. and sunsets in a swamp be like that. you don't really get those pastels.. but I can appreciate the nostalgia effect and it being too vibrant feeling off to others. I used to screen print and i would mix ink to match pantone colors. I appreciate vibrancy. even in a dark horror story. as for the warping of the pages? I haven't opened it, sorry.
New colouring makes it feel and look more 'modern' but it really looks like you lose some of the ephemeral swirls and subtly of the pastels for standard modern digital vibrancy. Disappointing IMO
You lose a dimension with the new coloring. The original coloring gave it that extra creep factor. I still purchased the book but there really wasn’t a need to change anything. You can’t improve on perfection imo.
Had the same issue with the binding literally upon opening the cover. Will be returning/exchanging with Amazon and hope to have better luck with the second. Unfortunately about 1/5 of the absolute editions I've purchased have had these kind of problems. Purchased/exchanged Final Crisis three times and every copy had the same problem

Yeah, not a big fan of this recoloring. Steve Oliff did a perfect job recoloring Simonson's Thor, wasn't as good in Miracleman and it seems he kinda missed the mark on this one. There's some good stuff here, but generally everything looks excessively saturated for this kind of story and too photoshop-y, especially considering this is a comic from the 80's. Which is weird, because I think the amazing thing that he did on Thor was to update the coloring without making it look too much out of its time. It's delicate balance, I know, but he nailed it there so perfecltly. I already got this on preorder and I'm probably keeping it, because this art deserves the absolute format, anyway. But now I'm hoping even more for a "SW Noir" edition. I have the old b&w "Essential Vertigo Swamp Thing" floppies and they look so freaking good. It's a shame they never finished Moore's run on that format (I completed the b&w set with the Titan tpbs, but unfortunately the artwork reproduction on those isn't nearly as good).
It seems like water damage or something with that warping & the yellowing of the last pages as well when you had a shot from under the book. Just a thought.
I watched another review of this and they did not even mention the felt cover. Thanks for pointing out this detail. Are you going to review The Crisis on Infinite Earths Box Set in the future?

I’ll revisit it when volume two comes out but not going to exchange it. The card stock of the hardcover is flexible enough to be straighten into the slipcase but after some hours outside the slipcase it gets into its warped state especially if you read it on your lap and not on a hard flat surface . I may also do a brief revisit/mention if I do a video on Absolute DK3.
With B&W we will lost some of the author intentions (I am thinking about the episode My Blue Heaven), so I would prefer Totleben and Bissette artworks published in B&W in some ort of IDW Artifact Adition selected pages.
