While *some* of the new re-coloring is questionable, I think a majority of it is an improvement over the original colors, especially when you consider that the paper in the absolute editions is a brighter white, and the old colors won't look right on that paper like they do on the more yellow looking news-print paper used in the comics and other collections.
I get the paper issue/argument, but it still just doesn't sit right with me changing some of the colors so drastically, completely altering the mood and tone in places. I'd prefer a recolor that tries harder to recreate or recapture the original coloring in a new way. For me, this just strips a ton of the character out of the artwork in a slavish devotion to a modern "realism" sort of look.
I’ve been waiting forever for this! Can’t wait. My favorite run of all time finally complete in absolute form. By the by, The shelves are looking great. Hope the move is going well.
I have the comics, the Titan B&W reprint TPBs, the ‘crappy brown TPBs’, and the recent hardcover set. And now this. It’s one of my favourite series ever, I’ll probably keep buying it if they keep releasing it.
Man, these look amazing. I'm really tempted by these, but I spent years trying to find this run in the six hardcovers, and just based off of the memory of looking for those alone, I'll probably stick with those.
I'm fine with the recoloring for the new lavish format. It looks great. I already have every issue of the comic series, the original trades, the hardcovers and now this, so I'm covered for the Tatjana Wood original colors a few times over.
Great overview Omar😃 I have the original colours in the 6 x TPBs but absolutely(😁) love the new colours and hope to pick these absolutes up at some point as it seems like it would be a whole new experience in this format. I can only compare it to like if one of your favourite old school films gets the 4k treatment if that makes any sense, cheers🤙🏻
That issue with Batman was my first encounter with Moore and has made him my favorite writer ever since. This is the only Absolute line that was entirely day 1 buys for me. I'll be keeping the trades too.
Got my copy this morning! I love the Alan Moore Swamp Thing run and they are perfectly collected in this format. I am also a fellow leaflet hoarder, I keep mine too, lol
GREAT OVERVIEW! (Got a copy winging its way to me as I type). This is a question for Omar AND/OR anyone else who might know: in the overview, Omar refers to the FIRST volume -- and it's infamous binding problem -- and says that there were two printing runs, ONE from Mexico and ONE from Canada (with the Canadian one being the print run which fell apart after purchase). Was there a THIRD print run? I ask, because MY copy of ABSOLUTE SWAMP THING by ALAN MOORE, Vol. 1, was printed in China (Of course, I ordered my copy from the UK, Book Depo in London). P.S. I completely agree with Omar regarding the coloring kerfluffle: years and years have gone when books like these WEREN'T being published in beautiful hardcover collections. And when DC started collecting them -- and changing things like the coloring (usually with good reason, or because the artists requested it) -- it seemed like you could always count on a specific group of unhappy, always picky, nerds who would go on and on about the coloring, or this or that (and always after years of complaining about never being able to buy a hardcover collection of this or that). There are always folks who will never, ever be happy, no matter how much ice cream they get.
Still to pick up my Vol 3 but I’m pretty sure the slipcase spines are all designed so the background images for 1-3 are all subtly connected. Fantastic to have these stories in the Absolute format. I have the original singles and the standard HC’s with the original colouring too and they are also must-keeps. Thanks Omar!
I saw Absolute Swamp Thing By Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson on March FoC. Tempted to get it. Does it add story to the Alan Moore's run? I am okay with the new coloring and actually like it because I have never read Swamp Thing.
You don't need to read it to enjoy Alan Moore's run, but it is thoroughly excellent in its own right and will certainly add to your enjoyment of Moore's run 👍
My Swamp Things are the original Saga singles from Tony Isabella to Alan Moore plus some Baxter paper reprints of the Wein -Wrightson run I had read originally in the seventies. I have both Absolutes & will be buying this final volume. I`m planning on buying the Wrightson/Wein/Redondo Absolute when it`s published.
Is there any difference in what the Bronze Age omnibus and the new absolute for that run collect? Just thinking about getting the omnibus vs. the absolute. Would be a good video for Omar to do ahead of its release!
A great story that deserves the Absolute format. I'm really looking forward to the Bronze Age Swamp Thing Absolute with the original thirteen (or is that ten?) issues , even though I have the Omnibus 🙂
Do you think the bernie wrightson one will be recolored? Or have it be a facsimile of the original newsprint like the batman year one absolute? Both would be stellar
@@ScottPutnamART It was recolored for the Bronze Age Omnibus. But I don't think many have even noticed because it was done very faithfully. I'd be surprised if it was a completely new job for the Absolute.
@@SuperLaughHard I saw pics of that and thought it was the wrong direction. Just really garish for this type of paper. It's the same with the saga of swamp thing trades really?
I don't suppose anyone knows if the upcoming Wrightson/Wein Absolute Swamp Thing will be recolored? Would be pretty sweet to see Wrightson's art with modern coloring, though I know opinions vary.
You probably saw it by now, but the recoloring in that book ended up being terrific! I wish that Villarubia had done the recoloring on Moore's run as well.
Yep, getting this to round out the other two. I love the new colors but I want an omnibus format of the Moore run in original colors, too. I have the trades and there is a lot of good things to say about the original colors, although I understand the reasoning to change.
The problem is that the original colours were designed to be printed on newsprint. The dyes they used soaked into that paper stock a certain way, and Tatjana Wood knew what she was doing. D.C. isn’t going to release a newsprint version of Swamp Thing in trade though, so all the colour values have to be changed to suit different paper. They did that on the previous hardcovers, but they’re nowhere near as dark and saturated as the comics were. I wonder if Cartoonist Kayfabe have ever done a Swamp Thing episode with original comics so folks can see how different the colours are…
Would be great to see that gap bridged in collected editions. That would include Wheeler finishing out Veitch. I don't see that happening any time soon ... :-( I had my hopes up when the show launched, 'cos it was actually really good and I figured renewed interest might make the impossible possible, but we all know how that turned out.
Hey bro thanks for the good news. I was wondering if you might be doing a Conan full collection video? I know your probably busy and thanks for your time and quality video’s have a grate day.
I hope this get the Omnibus treatment at some point, I know the Absolute is the more premium format but I prefer the Omnibus form factor in terms of storing on shelves.
Is anyone else looking at what he's putting behind him on the shelves and judging? That series huh? I see. Also, I have never read these but have number one downloaded on Comixology, still haven't read it.
9 out of 10 time I look at recoloring in books I'm disappointed.. wen I see this books on screen the coloring looks good kus its ment to be digital but wen I see the physical copy I'm so disappointed why did they not leave the original coloring j felt the same with the Maxx, Conan darkhorse paperbacks & Batman by neil Adams should have just left as is
I'm sorry but in my humble opinion this recoloring job is just awful. Totally butchers some of the more abstract and surreal choices made in the original coloring, especially when the art leans psychedelic, which happens pretty frequently. It just does not resemble the original run as I read and loved it. Gradients galore!! If people prefer the more modern looking job then more power to them but boy it does NOT do it for me one bit. Really wish I could get the OG coloring in oversized format but alas I suppose I'll have to live with the TPBs!
Tbh I thought that too, but when I actually got the absolutes I was like yeah this is better in person. The videos make it look pretty bad but in person its not as bad as it looks on reviews and stuff
Maybe they'll tread us to an Omni with the OG coloring, but I'll seriously doubt it. Then again, at least it lives on in complete TPBs. Personally, from what I have seen so far, I do kinda like the recolor, except where they really messed with the backgrounds. Those pages go way beyond a recoloring. I found that entirely unnecessary and even a fair bit disrespectful.
It’s odd to me to see people clamoring for an omnibus edition when this is such a superior format. We are lucky we got this instead. And I love the new coloring. It’s one thing to be nostalgic and want nothing changed but if they had this type color separation and printing available at the time this is what the book would have looked like. They were very limited in the 80s with the 4-color process and newsprint.
While *some* of the new re-coloring is questionable, I think a majority of it is an improvement over the original colors, especially when you consider that the paper in the absolute editions is a brighter white, and the old colors won't look right on that paper like they do on the more yellow looking news-print paper used in the comics and other collections.

Its the reason i love omnibuses. It all looks new and the floppies look like cheap newspaper
Thanks as always Omar! Nice to have this run all wrapped up, I’m looking forward to getting this and finally sitting down to read it.

I have the "old crappy brown tpbs" lol I sold both Absolutes 1 and 2 and made a custom slipcase for the 6 Tpbs

Glad to have this to complete the collection, only paid £46.80 and recieved the absolute 3 days before official release.

Also team leaflet!
Got all 3 and was stretching out the 3rd one's spine while watching this video. Love the new colors.
Received my copy last week and kept the leaflet too ( like always ! )
