One thing i wanted to add about parallax. One of the best ways I've heard parallax error explained is as follows. Pick an object a few meters away and put your thumb out in front of you. So you have your thumb between you and the object. If you move your head from left to right while keeping your thumb in the same spot pointing at the target, you'll see your thumb obviously doesnt align with the object anymore. The same thing happens with the crosshairs when the parallax knob isn't adjusted properly. Adjusting the parallax knob is equivalent to moving your thumb and actually placing it on the object. That way no matter where you move your head behind the scope the crosshairs remain on target. The parallax knob, although it will adjust the clarity, the main purpose of it is to fix the issue of the crosshairs moving with slight movement of your eye. Removing that movement of thr crosshairs helps you to be consistent between shots and ultimately increases your accuracy. Hope that makes sense and helps explain it a bit more.
Only took 10 years to doing your own reloading. Better late than never 😂 I really enjoy hearing and learning about your journey. As i do for every hunter. Only you have it here on youtube to watch when im having a lazy day/night on the couch. 👍
Great vid mate! I love my 7-08 as well. I've been shooting the 150gr eld-x with great results. Super accurate and packs a good punch. Definitely going to stay my go to.
Great video sir and well done. I've been doing similar work with two of my rifles but with a slightly different approach. I replaced my glass (not as nice as that maven you have 😍) but I replaced the stock with two thumbgrip style stocks (GRS) on my 243 and 308. Thorough cleaning as you described and I carefully bedded the stocks. Then I went down the rabbit hole of handloading, and oh boy. Having a range of calibres makes it challenging as I shoot 243 to 350 depending on where I am and what we're hunting, but I've found that there is so much variation in powder, projectiles and then things such as powder weights, seating depth, jump, and so on. When I dialled in the 243 and managed consistent .4" MOA I was ecstatic, not just that I can consistently produce a good round and good shot, but that I feel more confident in taking my shortcomings as a shooter out of the equation. There isn't much like the feeling of taking an off the shelf tool and teaching yourself how to make it better, and how to make yourself a better shooter at the same time. I imagine it's what car people feel about custom building their vehicles etc. Keep up the great content!
a couple of things here Profty, well done on wanting to get the most out of your rifle the reticule is adjusted for focus by the ocular lens not the parallax, once set the ocular never needs to be focused again, the parallax on fixed parallax rifles is usually set at the factory for centerfire rifle at around 160y, the parallax on adjustable parallax rifles is used to focus at distances your are aiming at the time and on good scopes when the focus is right at that distance the parallax is right as well its a good way to check your scopes quality as if the parallax is adjusted till the focus is crisp and clear check the distance on the adjustment knob as well as where you are aiming, you may be surprised that everything lines up perfect also your rifle bore has shown as many do that they shoot good for a certain amount of shots but then they need a clean to get them back to what they were, l polish the throats of my bores after usually around 200-300 shots to bring my groups back to one ragged hole and the SST is a bullet l have used successfully for years, some people have trouble with accuracy but l have not ever found that, l do see that they do act erratically inside the body of a beast at times but l am very happy with them, another to look at is the common interlock that will shoot and kill very well as well as the ELDX or ELDM bullets anyway thankyou for this entertaining vid
Really appreciate all these points and thoughts, I’m sure you can tell I’m still learning the 101s for a fair bit of this so any info is gratefully received
@@AussieBushHarvest you are very welcome Profty but we are all still learning mate, its just good to see you showing us all how a little bit of an upgrade and maintenance can turn a rifle that is used showing some wear can still shoot very very well, good luck in the future and thankyou for what you do for us all
I will say this profty. Iv killed a lot a stuff with the 7mm 08 and the 139gr SST. I was never sold on them. They come apart easy and often would shed the jacket I would often find them on the off side hide on fallow and have lost sambar because of them. Not saying they are a bad bullet just saying I went down the Barnes LRX road.
Great to see you are still in love with your Remington 700 sps. I’ll never sell mine. I shot 3 stags in vic over 2 weekends with 140 grain 7mm 08 corelocks. All three dropped within 40metres. Biggest stag went 28 inches, shot at 79 metres. Appreciate all your videos you do Profty. Good luck in Vic. Hope you can find a trophy
Great video. But.... I think You should have got another rifle. I had a couple of Remington 700 short action rifles and got rid of them all. Several reasons: 1) the short action magazine is too short. Loading Hornady 139 SST to maximum magazine length I was still 3-5 mm off the lands. With such a jump one can not get get a real accuracy. With SST 139 I found they perform the best if they are 0.3-0.4 mm off the lands. Other brands are much better, the Short action magazine in X-bolt is just over 73 mm, what is enough for SST 139 projectiles. to kiss the lands. 2) Unless You are very lucky, in remington there is no alignment between bolt face and the barrel. I had it realigned by gunsmith in Marrylands, NSW 20 years ago but that was quite expensive. 3) They get rusty, no matter how ofter you grease. Obviously, poor quality of material. 4) The trigger is to be replaced straight away, for your own safety. If You can buy, at this moment they are not available. The timney trigger is about 500 dollars, the replacement spring , for example for Tikka t3x is only about 20 dollars... The only advantage is the 24 inch ss barrel. So I believe You should have bought another rifle. New Tikkas t3x light arrive in Sydney 21st January 24. Around 1700 dollars... Do Yourself a favour, get rid of remington and get some european quality. Sako barrel and trigger for that price! Another great advantage of Tikka is... long action magazine. They all come with long action magazine well, You just select magazine and bolt catch to suit your projectiles. I wasted so much money for remington rifles. I had several models. I even had long range one. (26 inch fluted barrel). None of them would shoot well, no matter how much money I had wasted. I also found AR 2209 performs much better with 7mm 139 SST projectiles. I use 49.7 grain AR 2208, with maximum OAL of 72.8mm. They perform great. Just make sure you trim your cases ( I trim to 51.5mm) or you may get blown primers. (and damaged bolt face). Good excuse to get rid of this gun. With regards
If you have time to adjust paralax, bob you head slightly behind the scope until the reticle stops moving in relation to the target. The clarity of the reticle compared to target means nothing in regards to paralax. The focus of both can be close, but it is often not perfect for either when paralax is properly adjusted out. Make sure the reticle is focused properly with the eye piece in the first place.
Yep, I was just coming down to make a similar comment. If your parallax is wrong and your eye isn't perfectly centered in the scope you will actually not be aiming where you think you are. It's the same effect as the passenger looking at a car speedo needle will see a different value than the person staring directly at it. Also just as a extra bit of info the numbers on the parallax turret are almost always wrong and don't align with the actual distance the parallax will need to be set for. Doesn't matter how nice the scope is either. The clarity of the reticle is controlled by the diopter adjustment located on the eyepiece of the scope.
Good video to do mate to many people think buying a rifle an the ammo to go with it is all there is to it but it couldn't be further from the truth Getting your self educated on how the system an components work together is key to confidence in the field Most people would buy a new gun if it didn't group well with factory ammo but not everyone has that opinion I my self when I got my first centrefire rifle I couldn't really find a factory load I was happy with an at the time to get into reloading wasn't that expensive an now my most fevered deer an only deer rifle is a sporterized no1 mk3 as a 7.7x54 that i got fo $200 an factory ammo is non existent but is capable of sub MOA with my hand loads an plenty off practice
Love the video profty.. the best thing I ever did was find a good gunsmith and listen to everything they had to say.. it sure is a wealth of knowledge and very valuable.. glad you have fallen in love with your set up again mate.. confidence in your rifle sure does feel good... all the best in Victoria mate.. can't wait to hear and see the adventure 🤙🤙🤙

Happy for you. I have a rem 700, 7mm-08 also. It has a 20” barrel. It is quite light and has the original Tupperware stock. Perhaps I should get a B&C. I haven’t been able to consistently get groups under an inch as I do with other rifles. Id like to recommend (since you handload) the Barnes 120gr TTSX bullet. The real test will be Sambar but im sure a well placed lung shot will have them on the deck, hell theres guys out there chasing them with bows & arrows managing trophies.
Good performance. Thank you for inspirational video. I will use SST bullets less now. Had one blew up on a shoulder of a deer recently. Also, they make seemingly thousands small lead shrapnel pieces in the meat which I would rather eat. Copper bullet worked better for me.

Yeah hearing ya, 25-06 is a classic, seems like it’s going out of favour unfortunately, it’s so versatile. Yeah safety catches don’t get used by myself or many hunter I know for that very reason
Good vid mate I shoot a 7mag,7wsm and 7-08. I have done a shet load of reload and culling with them all and found the best for the 7-08 was using a combination of 154gr sst and 154gr interbond. The sst work great for small game and the interbond still smash Sambar. I found the sst works best going through the rib cage as it damages less meat and you don’t have to worry about shallow blow up.

Awesome stuff Profty. I been on a very similar journey with my 7mm08. It’s taken a while, and after taking similar steps to you it’s finally shooting great. I might upgrade the stock. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers mate. !!!
Finishing on a high at the range is a great relief.. Was the thumb shell an addition to thd stock? Neat grouos at 100 yard.. Currently getting barrel made and action trued for foxing with 204 here with rem 700 short action... What solvent used to clean barrel so fast!
Nice job. I’ve been on a similar journey with my Franchi 308 to get sub MOA. I settled on 150SST and keen to see how they perform on deer. I’m curious as to why you didn’t bed the stock when you had the action out? Obviously you didn’t need to but it’s a common first step.
Nice set up! Hornady precision hunter factory ammo almost makes reloading unnecessary. I got my Howa shooting under an inch at 100m with glass bedding, trigger job and Hornady ammo. I did reload for a while but gave it away as Hornady factory ammo performed so well I could hardly tell the difference and the time involved in reloading
Great vid. I shoot a 7mm08 same projectile and powder just only difference is I run 39.6 grains as I found for my gun to be the best. Might go and make some 41.7 and see how they fly. Do you know your velocity you are getting?
Couple of things....Never allow your rifle to get to the dirty state that it was in....Didn't see you torque the rings down....Both can play merry hell with accuracy). Not being critical, just observations. Like your videos!
Yeah sight in how you shoot. If your not going to use a bipod in the field, dont sight in with one. You may manipulate the stock differently shifting POI. Also try shooting with both eyes open. Although you probably wont get away with that with the "side focus" scope.
Love this stuff. Really good to see your success. I would have gone an extra step and proved it out to 200m. You'd be around 1.5 inches high at 100m This would mean it's a point and shoot scenario out to around 250m for any venison. Love your videos.

Nice job. I’ve been on a similar journey with my Franchi 308 to get sub MOA. I settled on 150SST and keen to see how they perform on deer. I’m curious as to why you didn’t bed the stock when you had the action out? Obviously you didn’t need to but it’s a common first step.
Because it’s not my stock, when I get my hands on a bell and Carlson I’ll definitely be bedding it 👍🏼
.284 Speer 110gr TNT. They prefer 2206H. Regardless of powder, don't come out the otherside 😉
That’s good feedback for the hornady! More than anything I just want consistency
I’ve had the same result with Hornady Whitetail 150gr in my Lithgow .308
Great vid. I shoot a 7mm08 same projectile and powder just only difference is I run 39.6 grains as I found for my gun to be the best. Might go and make some 41.7 and see how they fly. Do you know your velocity you are getting?
Perhaps I missed the info. What did you use to clean the barrel?
Thank you!!
As an aussie ranging in meters, is it hard to use MOA? I am assuming that the maven is MOA only. Have you always used MOA?
Should zero 2" odd high at 100
Couple of things....Never allow your rifle to get to the dirty state that it was in....Didn't see you torque the rings down....Both can play merry hell with accuracy). Not being critical, just observations. Like your videos!
Hey mate do you run a gps or you weren’t that far from the vehicle?
Try the Rem 783 . Love that triger as soon as i think bang the rifle responds immediately .
Bed ya stock be even better or go mdt chassis
What's it shoot at 500yds ?
The best thing that you can do to 700, make it safe by changing the trigger.
Are you going to bed your stock too? That should give you greater consistency still….
7/08 is under rated
I have gotten 2880 with the same bullet
Yeah sight in how you shoot. If your not going to use a bipod in the field, dont sight in with one. You may manipulate the stock differently shifting POI. Also try shooting with both eyes open. Although you probably wont get away with that with the "side focus" scope.
Good thoughts man, and yes it will be interesting to see groups from field positions without the bi pod, that would be the real proof of capabilities
Love this stuff. Really good to see your success. I would have gone an extra step and proved it out to 200m. You'd be around 1.5 inches high at 100m This would mean it's a point and shoot scenario out to around 250m for any venison. Love your videos.
Thanks mate, and yes definitely keen to put the rig through its paces at greater range, would like to practice at 300 for 200-250 on the field
mate, get into hunting with compound bow..you have not lived till you have taken a deer with a bow.
