Nice part 2 of the series. One of my favorite eras of TV college football is the period right after the monopoly ended. There were a lot of cool regional telecast and in many cases there was one from each team. My favorite example is the 83 Mich/Ohio state game broadcast in detroit wxyz and columbus on wosu. The WOSU telecast had woody in the booth.

Wow I never knew any of this. Very interesting, that explains why I see clips on line of abc covering D3 schools in this era.

Some of that might be from 1987 when the NFL strike was happening and CBS broadcasted 4 D3 football games on a Sunday

They should be an episode on how the Bayou Classic got its TV deal with NBC.

Although there is no doubt the old pre-80s TV situation was wrong there was something special about those nationally televised games at the time that has become lost. Of course were now at an inflection point where it's feasible for one in California to watch Alabama every week, but also grand valley state. Granted the TV contracts might limit one ability to watch Alabama for a reasonable price where it's just an internet connection to watch grand valley state. Essentially broadcasting is now destroying the ncaa as an entity, the top conferences yield all of the power. Those whom control broadcast rights control the money.

I remember these single game broadcasts in the 80s, but never knew about the revenue splits with lower tier/league teams. Damn the NCAA had its grip on CFB controlling tv rights , $$$$, investigations etc.

Re 1966 ND/MSU-The NCAA/ABC had already decided to broadcast Tennessee/Kentucky in the SEC footprint (with Red Barber at the mike) But, even in SEC country-there was HEAVY interest in the game in East Lansing-so the NCAA and ABC came up with a compromise, where ND/MSU would air in its entirety after UT/UK

    2:02 Actually, that was 1966, not 1965.
