    Soldier Boy/Ben is one of the most complex characters in The Boys, which is pretty impressive considering he's only in a handful of episodes. He is a dangerous cocktail of insecurity, toxic masculinity, and PTSD. Unlike Homelander, he had a human childhood with a real family, and unlike Homelander, he's not insane and can be reasoned with. I also believe him when he says he didn't mean to kill people when he blacked out and "Herogasmed". That being said, he's also a violent, selfish prick who takes out his own pain on everyone around him. It seems like he gets particularly nasty with anyone who triggers his insecurities -- when Black Noir wanted to go into movies (Soldier Boy's forte) Soldier Boy viciously attacks him while mocking him for wanting to "move on up" (a bit of a racist statement, referencing The Jeffersons theme song). When he arrives in 2020s NYC, he gives the interracial gay couple a disbelieving look but doesn't attack them or berate them; perhaps gay men simply don't threaten him. Mallory's rejection of his gross come-ons clearly pisses him off -- probably because his ego demands that every female in the vicinity be fawning over him.
    Did he really love Crimson Countess? I posit that he did not, although he might have cared more for her than he did for other women. He clearly had a LOT of sexual partners and hits on Mallory right in front of Countess. How well could he have really known Countess without noticing how much she hated him? How frightened of him she was? He and Countess are a very obvious parallel to Homelander and Maeve. Soldier Boy didn't love Countess anymore than Homelander loved Maeve. Countess was arm candy for him, a beautiful woman to play the role of dutiful girlfriend and supply him with sex to keep him under control.

    • @jessicakey4800

      That brings me to the subject of Gunpowder. I go back and forth on whether I believe Butcher's statement that Soldier Boy sexually abused Gunpowder. Gunpowder straight up denies it. But is he telling the truth? Is he in denial because admitting to being a sexual abuse victim of an older, more powerful man would destroy his credibility with his super-right wing, conservative base? Or did Butcher just assume the abuse was sexual in nature? I can definitely imagine a scenario in which Soldier Boy dragged 16 year old Gunpowder to the Herogasm orgy to "make you into a real man".
      Soldier Boy's fighting skills, including shooting, reconnaissance and cool head under pressure suggest he really did see combat, despite what The Legend claims. It's worth noting that The Legend isn't old enough to have actually known Soldier Boy during World War II. Soldier Boy may not have stormed Normandy, but he may have seen action in the Pacific and his rant about Afghanistan seems personal, so I suspect he really did participate in black ops in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion.
      The most telling scene about Soldier Boy is actually one he isn't in: when Homelander asks Black Noir what he was really like. This is a complex question that deserves a complex answer, and Black Noir isn't capable of giving Homelander that answer. One of the most tragic aspects of the show (and a great example of Vought's utter villainy) is that all the while Homelander yearned for a parent's love, Soldier Boy deeply wanted children. If Vought had allowed him to interact with Homelander, he would've parented him and Homelander wouldn't have grown up in the artificial environment. I mean, Soldier Boy would've screwed him up in other ways but Homelander wouldn't have turned out AS bad as the one in the show. But Vought created Homelander to be a product, a replacement, for Soldier Boy and not a son; just as they created Soldier Boy to be propaganda and not a hero. They are both victims of corporatism.

      When referring to his love for the countess I believe he believed he loved her. If that makes sense. While it isn’t an ideal form of love I do believe he had emotional attachment and bonds to her. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have had almost cried killing her. He was pissed off everyone betrayed him but when he found out countess was a part of it. He was heart broken.

      I agree with homelander and soldier boy both being messed up victims of vaught. 100% going to look at a video regarding that soon. When it comes to the gunpowder thing I think it’s more of the “be a real man” kinda thing or some kind of messed up thing we’d rather not know about. Soldier boys ptsd though has such a strain on him. Even a man who’s essentially invincible now has something to fear. Flashbacks of pain. It’s a terrifying thought

    What is most interesting for me about Soldier Boy, is that he may be Narcissist and full of toxic masculinity, which he says is the way of being a true man. Yet he still sees himself as a failure due to that part. But he only realizes that when he sees someone like him (Homeland).
    I think just like homelander he has two parts of his personality. One of which is War Hero (even tho he never was in any war) that deserves respect, without any of those"pussy" emotions, and the second personality is the little boy that was not loved by his father and wanted to show he is worth it, but then realized he is worthless and similarly bad person as his father.
    But unlike Homelander where the two personalities talk with each other and basically merge. SB's first personality drowned his second one, where there are only glimpses of his self-hatred.
    I think this may be weird to say, that while I think Homelander is incapable of redemption or reformation, soldier boy has a small chance of actual reformation, (even tho it is really unlikely). Cause unlike HM, he in some primal way realizes he is failure.

    Alot of people thought the finale showed how the season wasted Soldier Boy as a character as he had little impact or consequences for the show and was put back in the box. What would you say to that?

    • @Sports_Questionmark_Podcast
      @Sports_Questionmark_Podcast  Год назад +21

      I would say that he wasn’t wasted at all. His explosion helps Maeve get her full arc and develop. It also now leads into huge cliff hangers on how he will react to hating the boys and homelander. He for all we know could be the “hero” of next season wanting to kill both and end supes

      @@atanaZion Because America is him. Arrogant, oblivious to everyone around him either hate him or laugh at him, violent, believes he is good guy while in reality everyone wants to get rid of him because he is so toxic, but he has some redeeming qualities, but in no shape or form it will ever be enough for bad things he is done.
