  • EDIT: If you want a license you'll need to create an account and activate a free subscription to Octane for Unreal in your account. Otherwise you will have trouble with this installation.
    Octane Render was released for Unreal Engine 5 very recently and I thought I'd do an installation video as a primer for some future videos and tutorials centered around using Octane Render for Unreal Engine 5 for those of us using a dererred render pipeline in virtual production.
    I have used Octane render for a while now with Unreal Engine 4 and this is my first trial of the software un the newly released UE5. It is currently a beta piece of software but I love the results.

I have been looking for a good way to create scratches or erosion to edges on my Cinema4d models and move it to Unreal but I am having problems. there are many tutorials on creating this in Octane but my question is. Can I just simply make a C4d/Octane material and apply it to the model and get a similar result/look to the edges inside of Unreal? How does Unreal convert the c4d/octane materials?

      Dev here, you can import octane orbx files. This will turn your materials into octane materials in unreal. These should be identical to what they look like in c4d octane.
      It also generates a previz material for the unreal side, which will attempt to convert the octane material to an unreal material - which is lossy.

    quick question, what is the purpose of using octane in UE when there is a native path tracer .

    • @JoshuaMKerr
      @JoshuaMKerr  2 года назад

      Its all down to what is supported and the look of the result. Unreals path tracer (in my opinion) gives good results but has bugs and a lot of unsupported features. It also still takes into account things like light attenuation settings, which you may or may not want.
      Octane is an unbiased path tracer that supports a lot of features that the native tracer doesn't and offers a much higher degree of control. And in my opinion the results look superior.
      Both pieces of software have some way to go but its good to know whats out there.

      Yes and no. Both have strengths and weaknesses. I prefer the look of the octane pathtracer personally. It's really a question of who develops the products quicker. I don't think UE's pathtracer is really suitable for my work yet but others may feel differently.

    • @JoshuaMKerr
      @JoshuaMKerr  2 года назад +1

      You also might be interested that the pathtracer in UE takes into account the light attenuation radius we set in each light. Octane on the other hand doesn't, which means it doesnt limit the rays from each light. Probably why Octane looks better.
