Lots of criticism in the comments regarding Pepins price, remember one guy is making these out of a shop not much larger than a two car garage. You'll receive poor quality plates from baadass and I believe iron masters are made overseas, Pepins are priced fairly considering current market conditions and manufacturing process. Love the vids Coop, consider getting a pair of digital calipers to compare handle diameters, plate thickness, and even the guage of racks for those amazon specials.
Best case scenario is to buy a quick adjustable set up to 50lb for quickness and 50 and over use these. Coop great video. You are helping alot of people. Thanks brother. 👍
I just welded a couple of 1"nuts to pieces of heavy wall pipe with a 1"id and a washer on each end.I use a 1"bolt of appropriate length and a cordless drill to put however many plates on each end, works pretty quick and don't work loose very easy
I've owned them for 9 months to a year, really have only ever used them from 95lbs to 120lbs, so maybe 2 or 3 times a day, 5 days a week. For the price they are the best. I like them but obviously like any other DB like these, the time it takes to change the weight is annoying, but it's the best/cheapest option if you need this kind of weight. I have dropped them pretty hard with over 100lbs and absolutely nothing happened other than them loosening up a tiny bit.
Having those Pepin Dumbbells for more than 6 months now... still as solid as the first day! If you have to drop your dumbells on the floor, I guess they are too heavy for you. I’ve never needed to drop them even when bench pressing. I give them a 9.5/10 just because perfection doesn’t exist. Proud Canadian right here.
I love these dumbells, I dont have one but I find the design and dimensions smart and better than any other adjustables on the market. Planning to buy a set. Good review Coop. 👍
I love my Pepin dumbbells. The machining on these are top notch and they're extremely easy to change weights. I purchased York standard plates for my set.
The variation of dumbbells is extremely useful for a small person like me ruclips.net/user/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 But the dumbbell size being large it's hard to do certain exercises like deadlift ( I have to have my hands and legs a bit wider to accommodate the size of the DB )Otherwise happy with the purchase. No excuse not to lift weight when it's snowing outside.
Also the Baadass dumbbells have a “you break it we replace it” warranty where as Pepin only has 30 day money back guarantee... I’m by no means a bad gym-goer, I don’t throw my weights or anything crazy. But the peace of mind sure is nice.
I lightly dropped the first design of pepins when benching at a bit of an angle ( about 85 lbs) and they bent a bit. I’m generally pretty mindful of dropping weights but have not had any issues after about 2-3 months with the improved design
Unlike you, I haven't had good luck with my PowerBlocks. After one tipped off the bench on to the floor, it was bent. It took an hour back and forth on the vice trying to bend it back into position so the plates did not bind. After that I ordered fixed dumbbells, 4 mos later they are being delivered Saturday.
Yeah that's a insane price for something that has about 5 bucks in metal and another 10 Minutes in fabrication. Imagine the manufacturing cost in bulk . Crazy
@@wildcard749 The written review says it's $900 + shipping if you get the 240lbs of weights included They're more expensive then most quick change dumbbells without the convenience of quick change and lacking the durability of old school spin lock dumbbells.
I still use a spin lock ez curl bar , tricep bar , and trap bar/suitcase lift bar. I have 2 of each so I don't have to change weights in the middle of a workout. Dumbbells are old school hex shaped 5lbs to 150lbs. I also still have a homemade squat and bench press rack I built in the early 80's. All this fancy shit wasn't around 40 years ago when I started lifting. And it all still does the job just fine.
I think the complaint about not being as useful for drop sets or super sets is blown out of proportion. I would guess that not *a ton* of people even do these in their training. With normal spin-locks I've never found myself wishing I could swap weights quickly. What I'm using for the day is what I'm using for the day.
Although not marketed for it, Ironmaster handles actually do well with standard plates too! Cheaper way of getting your IM handles to 100+ lbs without paying for the kits.
I prefer this style myself. As for super setting I would pair it with a curl bar or straight bar movement. I don't do a lot of "run the rack" sort of working out, and that would be the only hindrance for someone in my opinion. At my age I tend to move up in weight per set in increments anyway so I'm changing weight or at the very least putting things away and getting the next weight or equipment set up in between sets. I think the price on these is actually pretty affordable, considering I just paid 75.00 for a set of 35 DB's from Wal-Mart. I'm thinking I might just order a set of these!!!
Old Ironmaster DBs were actually like this (spinlock). They even licensed thier old design to hoist back in the day. On reddit I saw some guy use Titan fitness chrome plates with these peppin handles. It looked super sweet.
Great innovation. It'd be nice to have a spin lock dumbbell without the risk of digging yourself in the leg with the end of the bar when you rise out of a set of dumbbell bench presses.
I just got the Gungir 25mm dumbells, after watching the review on this channel. Durable, (or so I hope) easy to load and unload and they look good. They are also a safer option than anything that requires a retighten after a while.
Great review. Having used spinlock dumbbells, using these would actually be a major downgrade. The amount of time and effort it took to switch weights for the spinlocks were one of the main reason why I've switched to Powerblocks. With spinlocks, I would rack and unrack them like you would doing deadlifts with a barbell - leave the dumbbells down on its side, unlock both collars at once, unrack and rerack the plates on one end, and then do the same for the other end. With these, it looks like I have to tip them onto one side while balancing the other end, unlock one collar and make sure that the plates don't slide or move at all, stack/unstack while balancing the plates, lock them in, and then do it again for the other end. Even with 85lbs, you're stacking and balancing four plates on top of each other. The setup just sounds like a major, major pain in the ass. One thing that's nice is that the ends are flat, and doesn't have the handle rod jutting out, so it's much easier to kick them up. But other than that, they sound awful to use. I looked on their site, and they are $700 USD for the 190lb set and $200 for just the handles + collars. Even if you got the weights separately for about $250 or so, you're still much better off going with Powerblocks or something with an easier mechanic, even if they don't go up heavier. The only reason I could see buying these is if you're going to only use them for heavy sets above 90 and replace the increments up to 120bs and have another set of adjustable dumbbells for everything else. Going through a full workout with 5 different exercises plus warmups seem like an absolute nightmare with these.
Two pairs of handles would fix that. Better than pressing a chinese contraption overhead imo. More freedom to use them for other exercises where the block assy gets in the way... and ab rollers... list goes on
It would be great if they made a pair of wrenches so you can tighten them better & loosen them afterwards. I would make them similar to a armourer's wrench, it would also help people disabled people use them.
Nice to see some Canadian made stuff. Would love to see some Gorila fitness stuff reviewed. I have their adjustable bench and the Silverback rack. Both are really nicely made.
The old design spin locks are a great inexpensive option for people looking to do dumbbell work 85lbs and below . Also I was thinking since they’re so cheap, you could buy a second set of regular spin locks and do super sets that way.
These seem like a great pairing with a 5-80 pound set of nuobells. You can leave these loaded with ~85# and adjust up as needed for your primary movement and use the nuobells for drop sets. Great review!
I have my pair for 2 months now and I'm very happy with it, they feel super stong, the grip feel very good as well, I put rubber ring in the screw for even better fit and when you play with them they don't even rattle even at 125 pounds (with the handle). They are not for supersets but they will not break on you and they won't break your wallet.
Love the fact that pepin dumbell are made in my Canadian province. The idea of the inside screw is brilliant. I feel the badass company just surfed on someone else idea and and just tweeked the design. M2c

I have these, they were exactly what I was looking for. I have a lot of old York one inch hole plates from 25’s all the way down to 1 1/4 plates and yes the twenty fives work ok on these.
Personally I love screw end designed dumbells because you can use after market weights and its just a more simple design. I think these peppin dumbells looks awesome. I do need a pair of dumbells and I would love to buy these. They would do me just fine for what I need.
I like that you can buy just the handle so you could have 2 or 3 sets of hands and set up your weights for your super set or drop set before you start.
One thing these kinds of dumbbells help with (versus the old school spin dumbbells) is when lifting heavy. Resting heavy DBs on your damn legs, when the metal end sticks out, is a bitch. These make it so that you can still use your old school 1-inch diameter plates and rest them on your legs. I also like that if you have to swap out your plates, you can just buy some standard 1-inch plates to replace yours when needed.
I like the basic starlock with standard plates..New York Barbell has longer sizes, 18 an 20 inch in addition to the standard 16. You can load up as many 10 lb plates as you need and they are safe and durable.
That is Great!!!! I made simple adjustible dumbells with threaded rod. A piece of steel pipe as handles. Using one inch hole weights. I get dumbells weighing up to 160lbs (72kg). Sealed with nuts. Works great!!! Not as nice looking as your dumbells, but really badass, hardcore ones !!!
I have a nice, fully equipped gym in my garage, which I use, but still prefer real work like shoveling, logging, building, running, etc; it’s just more pleasant in the end to accomplish something real than fighting gravity in place
I’ve got the Badass 97.5lbs dumbbells and they’re definitely indestructible. I bought these over Pepin because I didn’t care about the aesthetic of the plates and I wanted something I know would last. Admittedly the time it takes to adjust is an inconvenience. I only superset with other options (barbell, pulley, single db).
Standard spinlock dumbells are so much cheaper that those. In my view the only advantage of the reviewed dumbells is that they're shorter when you're only using a light weight.
Nice one mate! I just prefer to get 3/4 pairs of basic dumbell handles (1kg/2kg) and then set 3/4 weights which I use for basic dumbell work...low/med/heavy/ top weight...and that works best for me...no time wasted shifting here and there opening and closing them...I do not do/ have much time for excessive dumbell work and so 3 sets work ok for me...25lbs to 100/110lbs max
These seem like the safest adjustable dumbbells out there. If you wanna use larger plates its easy. Make short wooden, plastic or rubber sleeve for the dimensions you need. Ideally single plate sleeves.
Man, so many good reviews!!!! I really hope one day you get all in order and have the time to workout. You have given so much to this community that its the only thing I wish for you brother. At least that you hit a nice rithm and put in like 2 weeks of good on point workouts. I guarantee, once you feel the pump... you'll never go back. You're very successful in other areas. So, I think its all a matter of making it a priority. The discipline is there. Good luck bro!!!👍
I just spoke with Steve from BaadAss dumbbells and I am thoroughly convinced they are the superior option. The model you are reviewing also appears to be an earlier version. The logo is now etched. Im looking forward to the day I get to buy some BaadAss dumbbells. I definitely want the dumbbell that will last, can be dropped, and and not fail while over head.
I have the 147.5lb set from Baadass, with a set of extra posts that lets me load a single handle to 220lb for Kroc Rows, etc. They're built with ridiculously strong heavy steel, even the plates themselves (their 12.5lb plates are smaller than regular iron 10lb plates). Pretty? No. Heavy duty and guaranteed against breakage? Yes. Steve is the man.
I have the Baadass 147.5lbs set.. Went with Baadass bc they are available for shipping now versus Pepin who has a long wait time as they’re backed up. And I also wanted more the 120lbs dbs. A downgrade to Baadass is that they aren’t as cosmetically pleasing as Pepins and I do wish they did a polyurethane powder coating.. I’d pay the extra money for that. But they definitely are durable, and gets the job done. Changing weight does suck but I knew that going in. I have a 5-50 Core Home Fitness set for anything quick changing less than 50lbs and use the Baadass for the heavy stuff.
Im going to make these for my starter home gym, that handle and the screw system is so simple to make and my plasma table will cut those weights out so easily... I'm sure it won't be the the quality and finish they have but I can't afford any other way at the moment
website says $700 canadien for a pair of handles, 4 screws, and 150lbs of weight... I fail to see deal here lol! no way I consider that a reasonable price. Coop buddy I don't knkwnhos much money you make or when the last time you spent you're own cash on gear but this ain't a deal brutha lmao!!
My cap dumbbells I can take past 100, super cheaply. The 25lb plates don’t interfere with my range of motion at all. They wobble and loosen a bit after sets, but you just turn the plate clockwise against the set bolt and they’re snug as can be!
@@collinsmith1345 I remember that! They put them in a cement mixer and threw them down elevator shafts and picked them up each time and started curling. I love Coop a lot but he didn’t do much if any research when it comes to Ironmaster when he did the comparisons. You can just look on the product page for them and it says right there: “Heavy Duty - go ahead and drop them. No plastic or fragile parts! Lifetime warranty!” It’s on the damn product page.
@@srhyse I agree. Big fan of coop and his reviews have helped me make a lot of my home gym purchases. I’ve noticed he’s had a few inaccuracies lately though. Old age must be setting in 😂

Your videos are awesome man, would be nice if you could insert the weight in Kg on the screen every time you mention it in pounds for us outside of the US! Keep up the good work
I like them because compared to the chepo dumbbell screw set you find it makes it flater... not quit as long, you can set them flat on your leg... etc.. upgrade to that I think... not a bad idea... dont have them but better than my chepo I bought 15 years ago...
Looks good. I have both Power Blocks as well as Iron Master. I like them both for different reasons but more often reach for the Power Blocks just because the changing weight selection is faster (and I don't drop them). I'm not yet convinced about the durability of some of the plastic engineered designs (other than Power Blocks which have stood the test of time so far). I try not to drop the Iron Masters as well but given some of the torture tests they've been through I don't worry as much.
Because they are affordable, you could get 2 pair and set up for your superset ahead of time. Otherwise you could do one arm at a time and put different weight on each handle.
Yesterday I picked up my third set of adjustable dumbbell handles... I find dumbbells usually let me target muscles a little better and with 3 sets I can keep two pairs and two heavier ones for rows and such
For supersets - just purchase additional handles and have the weights set up before hand. Handles are cheap compared to the weights. So, set you up a 35lb, 25lb, and 15lb before you start the set.
The Pepin dumbells are made in Beauce not that far from Quebec city and the guy is making pretty much everything by himself in his own garage or something. He said he can't meet the demand. Baadass dumbell are made in Alberta.
I like them. If I needed dumbbells, I’d buy them. However I have a pair of dumbbells that work fine and are still as heavy as they were when made in 1960.
I ordered these after I tried to order BaadAss dumbbells. You can't order Baadass dumbells via their site, so I sent an email. I Told Steve at Baadass I wanted to buy a pair. I didn't hear back for 3 days.
You should look at reviewing the Core Fittness adjustable dumbbells. They are a pretty good "budget" option as far as adjustable dumbbells go. I have been enjoying them so far. Only go up to 50lbs. though.
I am sold! Now that these can be dropped from a reasonable height, what's not to like? EDIT: $997 including delivery to Texas. Not quite ready to pay that.
I use the bowflex dial your poundage dumbells rather than my Weider dubmbells with the collars that I bought in the 70’s. It’s real fast changing the lbs.
@@MickJabber Yeah I know. Early on, he states that you have to buy iron master's plates. I'm telling people that they can just get the handles and use any standard plates they may already have
I have these with their plates. By far the biggest annoyance is the screw getting too tight. It happens every other time I use them. Sometimes I have to smack the edge of the screw with a different handle to get it free.
@@Rastamahatma Spinning the plates doesn't work when it gets REALLY stuck. Pepin even recommends holding the plates between your legs and spinning the handle. Even that doesn't work half of the time. But yes, I'd take stuck plates over loose plates.
A good work around for having a change them so often is to own between 5 and 50 lb of fixed weights already and then use these for weights over 50 lb so Joe Blow could do a set of exercise with 100lb adjustables and follow the drop set with 50 lb fixed that he already owns that are separate from these and he didn't have to invent invest money into 80 90 and 100 fixed set dumbbell
I would only get two dumbbells a adjustable dumbell that goes from 10-50 per dumbell for stuff like arms and a loadable dumbell 2 inch for heavy stuff like bench or row
Seems like someone should just mill a normal width handle from a solid chunk of stainless and include three different screw lengths with the max weight etched on the end for easy reference. Sure, they would be expensive, but they should be as strong as hex dumbbells then and adjustable. Once normal returns you should be able to pick up 1" hole plates for $20for all you can carry. Better yet, make it so you can use the 2" plates everyone already has.
Would you please post links for the equipment you use in the description of the video? That'll make finding it online MUCH easer. Especially with some companies whose names are harder to understand or spell.

Nice will have to remember this when I get my debts back on track got 210lb of standard weights and only two custom-built push-up/dumbells
Not as nice looking as your dumbells, but really badass, hardcore ones
!!!
I’ve made a similar design with 1” UNC threaded rod, nuts, and 1” stainless pipe.
sell them and you'll make a bunch of money
I have a nice, fully equipped gym in my garage, which I use, but still prefer real work like shoveling, logging, building, running, etc; it’s just more pleasant in the end to accomplish something real than fighting gravity in place
I’ve got the Badass 97.5lbs dumbbells and they’re definitely indestructible. I bought these over Pepin because I didn’t care about the aesthetic of the plates and I wanted something I know would last. Admittedly the time it takes to adjust is an inconvenience. I only superset with other options (barbell, pulley, single db).
If you happen to watch my videos I teach you how to adjust baadass dumbbells very quickly.
I think I'll hold out for Iron Masters, but those Baadass ones seem like a good value.
Think I’d rather just get some York spinlock dumbbell handles and still have enough left over for a decent amount of weight lol
Yep same u seen the price of them and than u got to add the weights on after 🤣🤣 no thanks rip off
@@Allkindz268 you are broke
@@snskakskdjsjkskssk1895 far from it just why would u waste ya money when there is better dumbells out there?
for that money, you could get a whole set of used dumbbell rack.
Mine will be there tomorrow! Bought them after one of your story!
definitely would love a video comparing both dumbells
Setting up these adjustable dumbbell is my cardio session.
I'm proud to be from Quebec where they're made !!!!
That's stupid
BaadAss are a good dumbbell. Have a full review coming.
If you haven’t seen my videos I would watch them to change them quicker and maintenance.
Im going to make these for my starter home gym, that handle and the screw system is so simple to make and my plasma table will cut those weights out so easily... I'm sure it won't be the the quality and finish they have but I can't afford any other way at the moment
C$279 for a pair of handles and screw pins... C'mon man
I know right, acting like it's a deal, complete rip off 😂
@Censor Tube add 250-500$ shipping
Jesus Christ is right what a rip off. Made my own that are almost the same for about 50 lol....
@Censor Tube my cart was over 1200$ for the 190lbs set... Stupid lmao
website says $700 canadien for a pair of handles, 4 screws, and 150lbs of weight...
Ironmaster specifically says you can drop them.
Exactly. They even made a video of them being thrown all over the place.
Old age must be setting in 😂
If I’m not mistaken I think he even showed a clip from that drop video of theirs too. 😂
@@mattlovelace91 Nano flakes from all the knurling he handles is getting in Coop’s brain.

Damn it! Fine! Just drop it!
Pepin ain't easy!
But somebody gotta do it.
Yeah I smirked
Your videos are awesome man, would be nice if you could insert the weight in Kg on the screen every time you mention it in pounds for us outside of the US! Keep up the good work
I like them because compared to the chepo dumbbell screw set you find it makes it flater... not quit as long, you can set them flat on your leg... etc.. upgrade to that I think... not a bad idea... dont have them but better than my chepo I bought 15 years ago...
Thanks, after this review i love my Ironmaster even more.
Ironmaster does have a video dropping their dumbbells from the second story onto concrete though.
He will sell you an extra set of handles without the screws, that's what I did,
Yesterday I picked up my third set of adjustable dumbbell handles... I find dumbbells usually let me target muscles a little better and with 3 sets I can keep two pairs and two heavier ones for rows and such
For supersets - just purchase additional handles and have the weights set up before hand. Handles are cheap compared to the weights. So, set you up a 35lb, 25lb, and 15lb before you start the set.
that works unless your super set is 80, 70, 60. which is like $400 in weights lol
I got them. No complaints.
These have the best dimensions over any other
The Pepin dumbells are made in Beauce not that far from Quebec city and the guy is making pretty much everything by himself in his own garage or something. He said he can't meet the demand. Baadass dumbell are made in Alberta.
I like them. If I needed dumbbells, I’d buy them. However I have a pair of dumbbells that work fine and are still as heavy as they were when made in 1960.
These look great! I’m ok with a little extra time to switch weights and the option to only buy the handle is great!
I ordered these after I tried to order BaadAss dumbbells. You can't order Baadass dumbells via their site, so I sent an email. I Told Steve at Baadass I wanted to buy a pair. I didn't hear back for 3 days.
I recommend calling if you want to order bc they aren’t great with email. Every time I have called they have answered.
When you tighten the end cap try spinning the last plate in the same direction with the end cap and you'll get a tighter fit.
Ordered them 2 weeks ago. No plates, just handles. A very good deal.
I use the bowflex dial your poundage dumbells rather than my Weider dubmbells with the collars that I bought in the 70’s. It’s real fast changing the lbs.
The baadass coating is literally rattle can spray paint. I have been there to pick up plates and saw it.
I can see that being the case but I do believe there price reflects it. Definitely cheap for steak plates.
I would argue that you could use standard weight plates with your iron masters too. You can buy just the handle on their website as well.
you can
@@MickJabber Yeah I know. Early on, he states that you have to buy iron master's plates. I'm telling people that they can just get the handles and use any standard plates they may already have
Coop, how about a new review if the new Pepin HD handles vs the new Baadass handles with the Magna pins
Coop, what is it going to take for you to get off the Powerblock bandwagon? Outside of the durability aspect, I don't see the love affair.
I have these with their plates. By far the biggest annoyance is the screw getting too tight. It happens every other time I use them. Sometimes I have to smack the edge of the screw with a different handle to get it free.
Try spinning the plates, normal spinlocks have the same problem. This is better than them slipping loose on you while overhead.
@@Rastamahatma Spinning the plates doesn't work when it gets REALLY stuck. Pepin even recommends holding the plates between your legs and spinning the handle. Even that doesn't work half of the time. But yes, I'd take stuck plates over loose plates.
@@billymckee9438 good to know, I'm waiting on my handles now. My thighs/knees are beat up from trying to get my old spinlocks into position.
thinking of adding some thin rubber pads when I receive mine. Maybe it will help loosen it up
@Billy McKee ... Does Pepin recommend lubricating the threads with 3 in 1 oil to prevent them from getting stuck?
Sir Coop! Please make a review of Kensui’s adjusta-bells. Thanks in advance
My advice buy 2 or 3 empty dumbbells handles
How secure is the locking mechanism? That's my main concern when using spinlock dumbbells, particularly for overhead movements.
Cooop, it's about damn time!!! Been waiting for this review! Lol
I'll take my ironmasters anyday.
Word~! I've used Ironmasters for 6 years~!
I've been back and forth over iron master or power blocks the last week or so. I wish the iron masters weren't so pricey lol.
i use cheap standard plates with generic olympic dumbell bars with quick collars works fine.
Just get a 1 inch spring washer that will take the play and stop the loosening of the end cap👌🏼
I like loadable dumbells, but I would probably get this as an alternative and or ironmaster’s.
I would only get two dumbbells a adjustable dumbell that goes from 10-50 per dumbell for stuff like arms and a loadable dumbell 2 inch for heavy stuff like bench or row
Our boy coop from garage gym reviews out here looking like the fuhrer of home gyms
Have these and love them!
Would you please post links for the equipment you use in the description of the video? That'll make finding it online MUCH easer. Especially with some companies whose names are harder to understand or spell.
