    The moments in their relationship had me crying so much of the time. I love them so much, and I love how David was a perfect representation of someone who's been emotionally traumatized in relationships, but that doesn't mean that he's toxic with a healthy partner. He's healing and always trying to heal, and that was so profoundly beautiful to watch. You need to watch this show. It's wonderful.

    If you have the time, I HIGHLY recommend watching Schitt’s Creek. I know you’ve seen David and Patrick’s relationship already, but the whole show is like that but about all types of relationships. The growth of family love, or friendship, of love and loss. It’s beautifully human and real and wholesome. Definitely worth it for the way it makes you feel.

    You know, I used to think David and Patrick’s relationship was so unrealistic.
    It was so…happy and genuine, despite not being perfect. I could never figure out why they worked. Then I realized as a queer person, I’m kind of conditioned to find some sort of tragedy and sadness for queer relationships.
    Shows like Heartstopper, POSE, and Schitt’s Creek have relatively idealistic romances that feel so beautiful that it’s hard not to be a little discouraged by them. Then again, maybe I’m just cynical. Still, I’m so happy that this romance existed on television. It meant so much then and means even more now.
    Happy Pride!!🌈🌈

      Precisely, in a world filled with countless tragic endings for same sex couples, usually in the form of "Bury your Gays", it's fantastic to see more shows avert this clichéd trope, and let them finally have their own happy endings. 🏳️‍🌈👬👭

    • @KxNOxUTA
      @KxNOxUTA 2 года назад +24

      Believe me, this is actually not as much a gay thing as you may think, although the effect is probably indeed stronger for you due to greater likelihood of traumatic experiences (which I hope we can greatly decrease in future).
      But apparently many straight couples will find such relationship absolutely idealised and "Disney" and not believe it's an actual thing that actually exists in reality. That it's not as impossible to achieve as often assumed. The feedback gap between reality and "media's interpretation of reality" are probably further apart than ever!!
      So, you're definitely not alone with this impression and are part of a large group, which includes...... a probably very huge portion of straight. And ace people, too.
      Widely spread mental health awareness is still relatively new. And there's massive re-traumatisation going on. Via understanding how our perceptions of "normal relationships" being completely off the mark and not at all what we should accept as our "all is well".
      I'm straight and can barely think of high quality relationship representation in media, too. That's why I'd guess tjis specify effect is more of a "bad representation of reality by media"-thing rather than exclusively a "bad gay relationship representation"-thing, though the second definitely still happens and is a valid issue in and off itself!!!

    • @skymuffn
      @skymuffn 2 года назад +20

      …it sounds unrealistic but some of us are lucky to find it. Just like David & Patrick I grew up in a very affluent area with folks who were forward thinking yet very traditional and he grew up very blue collar, divorced but very accepting folks. With all our differences aside, it has continuously been an amazing ride as we just celebrated 20 years together.

      I remember my husband and I watched this for the first time (gay marriage), my husband was so frustrated with how accepting everyone was, b/c for almost every other gay couple we know it was very traumatic, in some cases violent, and ugly. And we are 90's kids, so we aren't even that old yet. I appreciate that it did end up being accepting, b/c that's the dream, you know. But I was low key worried that some people might think coming out is candy and rainbows for LGBT+ peoples.

      @@Atlas-pn6jv I'm so sorry that people are still so ignorant and cruel. Dan Levy deliberately made the show that way because he wanted to show what a world would look like without homophobia. He envisioned Schitts Creek as a utopia where the only people with prejudices were the Rose family who quickly learn to love their neighbours

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Месяц назад

      @@Atlas-pn6jvThere are some interviews where Dan Levy talks about why he wrote it that way. In part I think he wanted a story that isn't so painful or depressing (and didn't want to spend years of his life immersing himself in depressing stuff, either). Where the story is about their actual relationship and not about homophobia. The challenges in their relationship are all internal, rather than outside forces.
      Which also makes it very relatable whether you're gay or not. The storyline about their relationship is about two different personalities and two different life histories, much more than it's about gender.

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Месяц назад +1

      @@gemmahunt2968I don't think it's meant to be a utopia or anything extreme or impossible. I actually think it shows something achievable. Just a place and time where that particular prejudice isn't common. And they don't leave it out entirely. Patrick takes a while to tell his parents, worries how they will react, and when they find out there are a few moments where we're left to wonder if they do have a problem with it. In the end they don't but it's acknowledged as a prejudice that exists.

    Patrick and David are pure relationship goals, and they were such a delight to watch. Just warm fuzzies, and watching them navigate the rough patches, each other's pasts, and learning about each other was easily one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen on a show of any kind, much less a sitcom. Normally, I don't much like sitcoms because so many of them come from a place of toxicity and cruelty, but this one was so different, and so funny - easily the best sitcom ever made, bar none. I watched it because I've always really, really liked Eugene Levy (who has aged like the very finest wine - in all of the ways in which he's actually aged at all!), because he's always such a joy to watch, and I was all the more delighted by how excellent the whole show turned out to be. It was more than just one of the funniest shows I've watched - it was wonderfully uplifting, too. And that is a rare, and precious thing.

    When I think hard about it, one of the most unusual things about David and Patrick's relationship on Schitt's Creek in the world of television is that... (spoiler alert?)... they *were not punished for it* by the writers. They loved each other, complimented each other, had loving support systems, and got their happy ending, full stop. It was a real gift :)

    oh my gosh this reminded me of how when i watched their relationship unfold i just cried every time because it was so beautiful and genuine and we were on a journey with them watching them each grow and change in their own way and together in order to be able to come together as a couple! Ugh just so lovely! This just shows you don't have to be perfect before you get into a relationship and as long as you're willing to grow and change as a couple then it can work out. And it shows how people don't always have to be the exact same and have the same interests but can still be together and make it work! There is just so much to love about these two as a couple.

    This is the way a gay couple should be portrayed in a show. So many shows just seem to throw in a LGBT character, just to have one. Their identity adds little or nothing to the story, and that annoys the piss out of me for some reason.
    I don't think it's progressive. I don't think it's a positive way to include a gay couple. It's just like, "here's a non-hetero couple, we're so woke." And every scene they are in, they do something that is like, "don't forget. I'm LGBTQ." It feels exploitative to me, and the scenes they are in with their partners can feel almost skeevy.
    I am not gay myself, so am I way off the mark with this opinion?
    This, on the contrary, was incredibly sweet, and there wasn't a single moment, I wasn't rooting for these guys.

    • @swansabijr
      @swansabijr 2 года назад +7

      As a gay man myself, I think you're spot on. I often feel that way. The fact that David is pan and Patrick is gay is, of course, a significant part of their personhood, but it's not everything. They are just two people, two very different people, who meet and fall themselves falling in love with each other. They have lives outside their attractions, families, jobs, interests... and, also, each other. And to see this much growth from both of them in different ways is... beyond a breath of fresh air. It's an incredible gift.

      Representation is still important, even just ‘I’m here and I’m queer!’ characters can be an important stepping stone despite being one-dimensional. But it is 2021 and representation isn’t as hard to come by anymore, so you’re right overall, queer characters deserve to have layers and be dynamic just like straight characters do.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo Год назад +1

      (Note that when I write “gays” here, it’s shorthand for all LGBT+.) You’re not wrong. The thing you didn’t mention is this: the really big change in the last few years are the depictions of _healthy, normal_ gays and gay relationships. For decades, gays on screen almost exclusively fell into one of two tropes: camp, often shallow, comic relief, or “kill the gays”. That is to say, some kind of tragic or sad outcome. Even the most beloved gay movies, like The Birdcage, rely on those.
      Schitt’s Creek is one of the first truly healthy adult gay relationships ever shown. And Heartstopper is one of the first truly normal young gay teen “puppy love” relationships. (Heartstopper’s drama is absolutely realistic without being… dramatic.) Together, they’re what we grown-up gays realize we needed when we were kids: _relatable_ gay characters and gay relationships. Most of us aren’t swishy queens or butch lesbians (especially not when just beginning to figure ourselves out!), and the tragic stories are ones we didn’t _want_ to identify with. (It weighs on you when you feel like you’re not like the “fun” gays, and then look at all the hardship, danger, and suffering you’re liable to experience.)
      So that’s why these shows are a) so deeply heartwarming and healing for us gays of today, and b) so _incredibly_ important for the gays of tomorrow.

    I'm not a romantic. I'm just not. One of the greatest pleasures of my adult life is having my own space, and it's probably telling that having it is more important to me than any relationship goal (whatever _that_ means) on any given day. Watching David and Patrick develop as a couple is the closest I've ever come to maybe-sorta-kinda understanding why people put such a premium on finding a true life partner.
    ETA --- oh, and of course, seeing positive representation of a 2SLGBTQ+ relationship is great too! I forget that as amazing and relatable as this pairing is, it's also groundbreaking in a lot of ways.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo Год назад +1

      Lemme share my experience with you, as someone who also needs my own space and time. I consider myself a social introvert: I enjoy socializing, but I need my alone time, and lots of it, to “recharge”. I live alone and enjoy it. Socializing is draining. I describe myself as having a few layers of bubble around me, and someone breaching the bubbles either saps my energy, or at minimum prevents me from recharging.
      The first time I had a _real_ relationship, with someone I actually saw myself spending the rest of my life with, I noticed something: he could be “in my bubble” and I could still recharge. And it changed me: I went from needing absolute darkness and silence to fall asleep - if I could make out even the tiniest identifiable trace of a voice or a rhythm, even through walls, my brain would laser-focus on it and keep me awake - to falling asleep in bed while he watched TV next to me. (And if we hadn’t each been saddled with our respective baggage, we probably would have stayed together.)
      So when the right person comes along, you won’t have to choose between having your own space and having a relationship: you’ll have both, because having them in your space is exactly what you’ll want. And you’ll realize that every relationship before that was just practicing for the real one.
