Schitt's Creek's Ending, Explained: The Social Message

- Get 20% off Brilliant: brilliant.org/... | The Emmy-sweeping Schitt's Creek, created by Dan and Eugene Levy, follows the wealthy Rose family, who lose their massive fortune and are forced to relocate to a small town with a silly name. But the moral of the series isn’t as simple as arguing that the upper classes should be brought down a peg. Schitt’s Creek shows us a more well-rounded picture of a society where income inequality is no longer a factor, class isn’t an issue, and everyone is treated with empathy. Here’s our Take on how Schitt’s Creek plays on its motif of opposites to show us how the Roses grow along with their counterparts, and what its vision of a classless society can tell us about bringing people together.

Alexis had the most character development I’ve ever seen in a show. It was beautiful to watch.
Thank you!!!
@@lovelyorchid2948 Annie Murphy made all the change look easy -- as well as funny. I hope she finds more work to show her incredible gifts!
Totally.honestly i started watching it because of davids character but gradually fell in love with alexis .she is the best.
Lol
IMO it was David. In the 2nd last episode he finally shares that the only reason he wants to move to New York is to show his 'friends' that he is not a joke and that he won. Man that hits home with so many people doing things they don't want to only to impress people who don't matter. The scene almost brought me to tears (kudos to Dan Levy for the beautiful acting). It was so heartwarming to see him make the decision that he does not need to care about all those people from his former life.
The real turning point was when Johnny defended the town during a dinner with their old "friends" and praised Roland and Jocelyn. That's when things really started to change for the characters of the show. I'd watch 10 seasons of this show easy.
Completely 👍 agree, that was a poignant and memorable moment, which typifies the dynamic tone of the series.
True! That was def one of the turning points. I admired John for defending Roland and Jocelyn. It was tough to watch because Roland def grows on you as a character and Joce is just a sweetheart
Right!!! That was my “oh this is gonna hit different” moment for me.
I 100% agree but I'd also add that an equally important part of that episode (and a pivotal turning point for the Roses) was the scene after the dinner at Mutt's party. There, for the first time in the series, not only do you hear each of the Roses verbally express their love for each other but you also see them dancing together and really enjoying one another (and the townspeople) in that moment. The fact that this joyful family scene takes place in a barn (literally the last place on earth the Roses would've ever been caught in their old lives) shows us just har far the Roses have come in the two years they've lived in Schitt's Creek. They've grown not just individually but far more importantly they've grown together and truly become a family for the first time. It's a beautiful scene that showcases the power and love of family and community and it *always* brings tears to my eyes whenever I watch it.
@@SoulShines4U Well stated! Thanks for mentioning that these two pivotal scenes are in the same episode. I think they both get to the heart of the show: love of family, and an understanding that no matter our backgrounds we have more in common than that which divides us. IMHO the reasons why this show resonated so much with fans in the States during these recent difficult years.
David Rose is one of the funniest, most groundbreaking characters I’ve ever seen on television.
Normally, he would just be the sassy gay best friend with one-liners but this show throws that trope in the garbage and makes him arguably the most well-rounded, rich, and hilarious character on the show.
Yes!
It's so refreshing to see.
Eww David!
He is pansexual in the show.
He is hilarious. He's my favorite on the show...which OMG so many of them are the best I love them all.... but David makes me laugh the most.
Even the names has some symbolism. Roses cannot grow without Schitt (manure, or fertilizer). When roses wilt and their petals descend to the ground, they will become part of the dust and dirt.

And the character who blossoms the most, Stevie, is surnamed "Budd".
One thing I love about the show is how healthy yet eccentric John and Moira's marriage is; they are strangely perfect for each other. And then that trickles down to David and Alexis.
Yes!!!! Like it’s one of my fav things cause they don’t do that thing where the husband complains about being shackled. They really love each other and understand each other when they talk about things. Eccentric yes but fiercely loyal and they chose each other everyday. And I’m so jealous of it 😭
John is so normal and Moira is off the rails kookie 😂but somehow, they are amazing together
Honestly their marriage is the healthiest I’ve seen depicted onscreen
The whole family loves and genuinely cares for each other and it's very nice to watch.
I feel like Moira and John would be Bob and Linda if they didn't have their wealth
When she says “Johnny bought the town as a joke for David but it turned out to be the greatest gift” 🤯🤯🤯 my heart couldn’t take it 😭
Yeah it really makes up for all the other times Johnny wasn’t the greatest gift giver
This family lives in my head rent-free I’ve never loved a fictional family as much as them

@@ChezzaOuttaNowhere I started crying at the wedding as if I knew this family.

I kind of always liked her❤️❤️
Dudeee samee. At first I thought oh boy is she's kinda annoying but then when stuck around I really got to see all the dimensions of her. I was glad.
They all annoyed me the first season...I actually only watched a few episodes and gave up. My sister said I reminded her of David and I watched again just to confirm and fell in love with all of them. Best show ever!
@@jodi699 - Same here! I couldn't stand the show (despite being a big Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara fan)! I friend convinced me to stick with it, and I absolutely fell in love with the show and its characters. It's now one of my all-time favourites.
Johnny’s underrated tho
He’s an absolute sweetheart and deserves the world
YES omg I can only hope to find a husband like him!
What I love about the Roses, Johnny in particular, is that they aren't bad people. Unlike the Bluths of Arrested Development, they're not monsters, they're just oblivious. You root for Johnny to get back on his feet, and root for the family to rally and save each other. That's the magic of the show.
@@raem7846 True but the Bluth's are much funnier
@@Aaron-kj8dv Dysfunction is funny lol
He's my favorite character! I love how he isn't entitled and is willing to do the actual work in order to take care of his family. Despite being kicked down many times, he got back up and tried and tried again relentlessly.
I think a lot about how the end of S1 had David running away from the town in tears, going back to New York where he has nobody but wants his old comforts, but the end of the show had David as the only one staying there and being genuinely loved and accepted!! so good
If only Schitt's Creek was reality. One where everyone is treated with empathy and compassion and what truly matters at the end of the day is family and friends, not class or money.
In societies with less social inequality this is a reality. Like in some countries in Europe or Canada a little bit.

Moira Rose™️ is the greatest fictional character to ever exist. it’s mind boggling how the show blew up only after it’s 5th season.

@@edithnackers7127 yes, indeed. the wigs deserve a separate mention altogether. especially krista and robin lol.
It’s actually not that mind blowing at all. Most good shows reach mainstream popularity by about their 3rd season. So blowing up by season 5 is mediocre at best. And even that might be too generous l.
@@anjalmehta2237 and Maureen 😇
I don't see anyone talking about it, so I will do it myself. David was sort of parentified, and you can see that the parents didn't mean to do that. Its sad as well as heartwarming to see David trying to protect Alexis when they were rich. He doesn't blames his dad, but he is trying to fulfill Johnny's lackings.,while David himself is a mess. I relate to it. While my parents aren't completely ignorant, they don't see the mischiefs of my younger siblings and I have to use my discretion and abilities to help them. Much like young David, always worried about his sister but also not well equipped to help and confused himself.
So well put.

I've found myself speaking in similar fashions as Moira and Alexis. Such contagious speech and personality!
Right?! I now only say 'bebe'. I'd also like to work in, "aren't you scheduled to be dormant" naturally into my speech...
@@MisBabbles I only say bebe, now it's the only correct way to say it!!
Between Moira's "bebe" and Connie's (Hormone monstress from Big Mouth) "Bubba baff" I don't know which is more sonically aesthetic lol
I found myself constantly looking up words on Google because of Moira Rose! What a brilliant character!
I find myself talking/acting like David 😂
I never noticed the dress that twyla was interested in was the same one Alexis had on when they were seizing all their stuff.
This show only gets better the more you dig into it. Tracking the character arcs of all the characters big and small and how they play off of each other shows how much thought went into it. There are even things unfolding in the background with super minor characters like hearing the slow decline of Bob's marriage leading up to the divorce.
The show and cast is brilliant. But something about the town that they created feels so homely and cozy and comfortable. I look at this show and feel so cozy. This small town is so wholesome. Like i cant understamd but its so warm and COZY.
Yeah, I completely agree.
Yes i feel the same. I rewatch all 6 seasons every week to couple weeks. I have been battling anxiety and depression and its my go to for when i need it. It gives me a comfort i can't really explain. I have become very attached to this show
Just finished binging the final season of Schitt's Creek and now am baffled that it took me so long to watch.
I know its so good, I find its one of those shows that people say "I need to watch that" but never really do, But I'm like why not and I got hooked instantly
Ditto
I love Schitt's Creek so much. All of the characters are amazingly written. This is the only show on tv that brings me the positive energy I needed during the lockdown.
I’ve never liked a show as much as Schitt’s Creek.
I’ve never felt as safe as when I’m in its world.
I’ve never known love as free to grow as when I’m watching it.
It’s not been an easy few months for any of us, but knowing that it will always be there for us makes everything okay.
Thanks to Dan, Eugene and all the cast, crew and writers for creating this perfect gem of a show that has shown us how beautiful the world could be. They will never truly understand what they have given us or how much their beautiful creation has meant to us. Our effusive thanks is but a mote of dust in the beam of sunlight we bask in thanks to them. We will forever be indebted to them for the joy they have given us in 22 minute segments and I wish nothing but the best of luck with all future endeavours.
I think that the fact that there is no homophobia or bigotry in Schitt's Creek is wonderful and that is why it means so much to LGBTQAI+ people and their allies. There never needed to be an angsty episode where people were commenting on David's Pan-sexuality, Patrick being Gay, Jake being Polyamorous (although I suspect that Jake is a Sexual Hedonist rather than Poly) or Ronnie being a Lesbian. Everyone just accepts everyone for who they are, and wouldn't that be a wonderful world to live in?
Yes! They set such a beautiful example where they rather showed acceptance then struggles of being LGBTQ and it was truly refreshing to watch.oh my god I'm crying reading this this is so sweet♡
👌🏾
I was hoping you would talk more about how the town is a fantasy because there is seemingly no consequence to having or not having wealth. There are no homeless people or folks working for slave wages. David is able to open a successful business because he is randomly gifted $40,000. Stevie “realises her potential” because her aunt gives her a motel that she can later franchise. Even Mutt is able to lead his sexy back woods lifestyle; the bisexual guy is able to live like a Manhattan swinger despite making designer furniture in rural no where for a living. SC is a place divorced from economic systems, which is the appeal of the show. But I was disappointed that there never seemed to be a reckoning with this Oz v Kansas framing.
It’s also a world with no homophobia or racism. Shows don’t have to tackle real issues by showing the gritty reality every single time.
Dan Levy has said that SC shows the world and people what they could be when they put kindness, acceptance and open-mindedness first over greed and corruption. It's a fantasy but not necessarily an unobtainable one
@@Minam0 it's exactly why people don't have realistic images of wrold problems
Well said
Schitt's Creek is simply a left-wing fantasy. This is the narrative pushed by lots of wealthy Hollywood people, trying to show us how a Socialist America could be once the rich became poor. Few decades ago we had another socialist fantasy: The Smurfs. Peyo, its creator, was a communist and the cartoon reflected their ideal: a society where there was no money, no classes, with only one leader whose "wisdom" was obeyed... of, and there were only blue-skinned smurfs and ONLY ONE female. Once you add free will and the need to impress the ladies, equality goes through the window.
Patrick and David are quite possibly my fav fictional couple ever, I’ve never sobbed more at a wedding. Their growth and love is just so beautiful and important.
I felt weird Jocelyn and Roland didn't have much to do in the finale. I always thought they'll also have a big scene with the Roses.
Same
They should have had a bigger moment in that final scene with the rose family + Stevie and Patrick, they are all basically one giant family lol
Also one more important thing is that being in the town amended their relationships. Earlier the family cares little about each other. But later on, Alexis and her mother have bettered their relationship, the parents often express love and care for their children and no longer distanced like the so many times Alexis went missing and none of the parents knew. Also Alexis and David's relationship also gets better when David expresses how concerned he was every time she went missing. It is also one of the best things about the show.
My gosh. Annie Murphy is stunning.
Isn’t she though? I’m so captivated by her.

I found Schitt's Creek accidentally while browsing through Netflix after I had finished watching the Phoebe WB single season series Crashing, such a happy little accident. I introduced all my friends to the series. By the end of it most were devoted fans.
I missed Crashing when it originally aired but tried it on Netflix after loving Fleabag. I loved it and would’ve loved another series. As for Schitt’s Creek I thought it was a great show and the finale had me bawling like a baby.
OMG I also love both those shows and found them both almost accidentally!
@@peterdunlop7691 yes, another season of Crashing would have been great, especially since it ended kind of on a cliffhanger. But, I doubt PWB is interested in making that happen, she has moved on to bigger and better things since then.
One of the most uplifting shoes ever! Personal growth everywhere, you feel proud for the characters. David and Patrick's relationship helped me work out a few of my own romantic insecurities. I truly love this show
Not me crying while watching the part about Schitt’s Creek being the best gift David could have ever received😭😤🥰

Dave and Alexis’ had the best character development that I have ever seen on a sitcom, such a great show to be able to watch
I love Schitt's Creek, the characters are so well written!
Never have I found a series where I’ve deeply cared about every one of the main characters; but they went out at the right time, and with class leaving it to our imaginations to see where they all ultimately landed in their lives, feeling happy for each one of them. It’s a series I will revisit with much love in my heart.
Schitt's Creek is essentially a Canadian take on "eat the rich."
And, to a certain degree, is fairly close to small town, Canada, in a lot of ways. 🤨
Isn't it basically the opposite? "Look, the rich are people too! Money doesn't matter, we're all just people!" Doesn't sound like eat the rich to me.
@@cool_scatter like I said, it's essentially a Canadian take on eat the rich.

Ted and Alexis's break up broke my heart
It’s my head canon that once Ted finished things up in the Galapagos, he contacted Alexis and they got back together. Maybe they even moved back to Schitts Creek because Alexis could potentially do her job anywhere, and they could enjoy the simple life together.
@@cataryad661 This is the only epilogue I am accepting at this time thank you
Me too :( it was so great for her character arc though- instead of going with her hot boyfriend to live in paradise (which she would have done in the past even if she didn’t like the guy!) she chooses the hard route and to pursue a career
There comes the waterwork
Me too. But it was so beautifully done. They both grew tremendously because of their relationship with each other...and then ultimately it was that growth that kept them apart at the end. I cried like a baby during their break-up scene. I agree with cataryad661 - a few years down the road, they find each other again! :)
I’ve been waiting forever for a Schitt’s Creek video essay! Thanks for uploading ❤️
Im so tired of hearing. "Oh so schitts creek is arrested development?" Im like no it's a more heartfelt show with characters who grow. It's not as mean spiritated as arrested development.
I didn't watch Schitt's Creek for the longest time mainly because I heard all the Arrested Development comparisons from friends and was not at all interested in a vibe like that. The first season does have that AD-type, mean-spirited, cringe-y vibe but I am SO SO glad I continued watching. Schitt's Creek brought me so much joy and happiness!
i might be the only one who liked ted and Alexis break up at the end. they both love each other and care for ne and another but it wasn't meant to be, at least not yet.
I didn’t want a break up but Even the breakup was perfect like the rest of the show

I'd like to commend how beautiful and comprehensive The Take did in doing this analysis of the show. I just kept agreeing in every point made on each character development. It's like you've made a thesis out of this that would definitely get 10's across the board in any defense panel. Bravo.

I just realized Bob said Gwen would leave him if he didn't get Christmas Town ...then Davids store opened instead of Christmas Town...then without any other mention of it she left him in another season
The fact that Alexis was the smartest person in the family is the most hilarious part of the show. I hate that Stevie never really found independence. She is tied to Johnnie who took control of her business and basically begs David not to leave but at least she tried new things.
I get that but I think so much of her character was about her really wanting a place to fit in, a family....she was independent and self reliant from the start - she just didn’t have the money or status that would make her independence impressive to others. She was doing a lot for herself at a young age. That’s why she was great to help David grow, too. He needed her to learn that it didn’t matter how others saw him as a joke or not but that it was about how he saw himself and those people who really saw that authentic self. That’s why her line about being incapable of faking sincerity is so important.
@@ThePinkMyth Yes same. To me her whole life she was independent and didn’t let anyone really get close to her. So her being so close to the Dose family, she finally found a family where she belongs.

Every actor on this show is Canadian except Chris Elliot. That makes this Canadian proud. Also, in case anyone somehow managed to make it six seasons without knowing, Twyla is Sarah Levy, Eugene's daughter.
Great video! Would love individual videos on the characters, particularly Moira and how she fits into the “wealthy matriarch trope”
I don't always cry during videos from the Take, but sometimes I do.
Schitt’s Creek AND The Take got me through the summer quarantine months. Kinda feeling a (4th) rewatch as the weather gets darker...
there are always inconsistencies in shows, but a couple things in the last season stand out to me. the first thing is kinda petty, but... the time when moira and johnny tried to stay in the suite at the new motel-when roland and jocelyn showed up, they acted surprised to see johnny and mora there, but they would have had to see their car which surely would've been parked just a few feet from the door.
and then...ted is a small town veterinarian who somehow gets picked for a job opportunity in the galapagos. at first i think maybe it's just a lottery type thing, but then he gets offered a permanent position to study turtles or flies or whatever. but he's just a small town vet, not a scientist.
True friends stick by you when life is a bed of roses AND when life is a bed of broken glass.
Or Schitt.

Excellent analysis for such a nuanced and beautiful TV show. I loved Veep's twisted humour and I also liked this one that always left you with a "feel good" sensation.
I only discovered Schitt"s Creek recently, during its final season. I'm now consumed by it. This analysis explains perfectly why. It's a utopia where capitalism is not ostracized but accumulating wealth is not the top priority. America has been derailed because too many Americans still think their human value is determined by luxury symbols and economic success.
Thank you especially to the two ladies who put the Take together. Really thoughtful observations that give even more depth of meaning to this special program.

THE TAKE
Have you ever considered doing videos on the 4 women of Desperate Housewives? There's a lot to unpack there--Susan's childishness, Gabby's selfishness, Bree's suppression & control issues and anal retentive personality, and Lynette's control issues and refusal to be happy, or even content.
You could even do a video on Gabby and Carlos's relationship--How two people can bring out both the best AND the worst in one another.
It would also be interesting to see a video about Peggy Hill's narcissism. To this day, lots of people are still making videos about King of the Hill, and Peggy seems to be the top topic.
Or what about a video on Penny from The Big Bang? She sacrificed her dreams and settled--in both her career and her choice in her romantic partner. Was this the right thing to do?
Just some ideas. I love your channel, it's my favorite ☺💜
