Moore's Law strikes again. This is a perfect example of a great idea becoming obsolete before being realized due to the rapid advance of technology.
Honestly, this is less about rapid advance of technology and more the simple barrier everyone in life faces at some point, money.
that's not what moores law is ...
@@Sarge92Yes, it is. The speed at which technology changes is directly tied to the increase in computing power, not just of computers, but all electronic technology. TVs went from large vacuum tubes to thin panels, and the speed of that change is directly tied to the increase of computing power of those TVs. The became smaller, faster and cheaper than earlier models st an ever increasing rate.
@@RickClark58 No, moore's law wasn't the problem, there weren't any technological changes, there was just physical(housing) changes.
And that was always going to be the problem with this product.
A housing that worked on one generation, might not work on the next, just because of a screw placement change.
The touchbar exacerbated this by adding not only a design problem, but an integration problem.
That is, where do you put it on the housing?
Frankly, this product was DOA from the get-go.
By 2008 when the first one came out, HP was already on their 4th-5th generation of purpose built products, Convertible laptops.
Other than being a mac, there's nothing particularly special about this machine in the computer market.
@@RickClark58 no moores law is the number of transistors in a package will double every two years
moores law never dealt with concepts of hardware becoming obsolete before being realized it simply stated every 2 years youll double the number of transistors able to be fit in a given space
and its not even a law despite people liking to call it that
anyone with a understanding of exponential growth could figure out that this could never last more forever
either your going to end up unable to make transistors that small or you'll end up needing a transistor to be sub atomic in size

I’ve had my hopes set on getting a ModBook for years. A touchscreen Mac? That’s a graphic designers dream!!
So disappointed.
I feel like a lot of those early functions were already available and common in the early to mid-2000s on Windows XP Tablet PC Edition machines that were available with similar Wacom digitizers. I saw a lot of those used in schools and universities.
I remember those, I wish that we kept going that route with tablet computers, and the ones we do have are few and far between the iPads and Android tablets. Well, I would love to see Framework make a tablet computer like that, being its machines are of a neat, modular design.
So glad you made this video. Loved the intro. I remember being super excited about Modbook in 2010, but I never bought one. Checking in years later to see what happened.
Good video, but you got "First Sale Doctrine" wrong. It's about the copyright holder's right to dictate terms on the first sale of a copy of their work. It originally came up when a publisher tried to stop anyone from selling their books for less than the listed price. The courts ruled that the publisher could enforce contracts with retailers on the first sale of the book, but anyone reselling that copy later was not beholden to those first sale terms. So it's about the first sale of a copy of a work after it's made, not about the first time you resold a Blu-ray you owned.
I don't think there's anything specific in copyright law about reselling existing copies, but keep in mind it's called COPYright law; it's entirely about a temporary restriction on who's authorized to make and distribute additional copies of a work; reselling a copy that already exists doesn't fall afoul of copyright laws because you're not making a new copy, merely reselling an already existing copy that was, presumably, authorized to be made.
Hmm. Frankly, I've never heard anyone explain it the way you're explaining it. I kinda believe you?? But that's a new explanation to me. But I'm no lawyer, haha. Thank you for writing. I put a disclaimer in the description, and in the video cards.
@@ComputerClan IANAL either, and it can be confusing, since first sale doctrine often comes up as a defense to infringement, so it seems natural to assume it's referring to the defendant's sale, not the original first sale by the publisher/retailer. The Wikipedia article on first sale doctrine contains this line that sums it up well though: "After the initial transfer of ownership of a legal copy of a copyrighted work, the first-sale doctrine exhausts copyright holder's right to control how ownership of that copy can be disposed of. For this reason, this doctrine is also referred to as the 'exhaustion rule.'"
Also, looking at the case that originated the doctrine, since it was established by case law initially before it was codified, makes it clearer about who's first sale they're referring to:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobbs-Merrill_Co._v._Straus
On a tangent, that article mentions this at the end: "The court did not hold that a contract or license imposed on the first sale could not create an obligation. In this case, there was no contract between the owner and the original purchaser, and there was not privity of contract between the owner and any third party." So EULAs, which are basically a contract between the software copyright owner and the purchaser, could be considered an attempt to end-run around the first-sale doctrine. Certainly for a lot of PC software nowadays, with online activation and the like, many people don't feel like they have the ability to resell it, even if they theoretically have the right.
@@marsilies my friend if you're not a lawyer you're clearly in the wrong profession! Or you have too much time on your hands lol
So the First Sale Doctrine is the reason for boxed Microsoft software still being expensive on eBay? Such as Windows XP boxes going for $99?
@@isaacwright2247 Not necessarily. Prices are determined by the market and sellers. I'm not saying I always agree with them, but that's usually how prices are set. ; )

At one point I was in possession of a ModBook, but a mishap destroyed the glass portion.
Yup, my first generation mod book got pushed of my desk by my cat and it knocked some screen connector loose and the screen went blank - the computer potion still worked if you connected it to an external monitor -- but instead of repairing it I just bought the mod book pro .
The 16 inch was launched in 2019. The 13 and 15 inch touchbar are 2016 products. There was no 16 inch model at the time you mentioned
Mod book mini - theres loads of air in the mini. Rumour has it it can run on 12v and the board is way small. Get a HDMI touch screen from a laptop and a battery management system and you have an M1 based modbook.
that intro was great lmao
Thank you : D
At 12:11 you says the new 16 inch MacBook pro. But that came out in 2019. In 2016 was the 15,4 inch macbook pro with touchbar
Didn't the little disclaimer bar pop up? Unless for some reason you can't see RUclips cards, it should've popped up and corrected my error. : c
I remember when these were A Thing, and Ars Technica did a review of what was then the current model. It sounded very niche, but in a way that made sense. If you had a use for it, it was very much what you might want. I hadn't heard anything about them for years, and I had just assumed that they went from being niche to all but pointless, after the introduction of the iPad Pro. I mean, I'm no artist, but just trying out an iPad Pro at Best Buy was an amazing experience, and I can easily see it -- together with the Apple Pencil -- being an extremely useful tool for artists and other professions that need to do a lot of digital drawing but with a lot more power behind it than a standard iPad.
Thanks for making this video! (Yes, even though I didn't watch it until it was two years old.)
What Apple has done with the iPad Pro I think is what the mod book was trying to do, like you said the iPad Pro is quite cheaper and it has lots of features that render the mod book useless, only thing is the mod book pencil was way better than the current Apple Pencil which needs a functionality update
I seriously wanted one of these back in the day!!
The fact that they had a track record already is why I had invested in the company. There is definitely a market for it but I guess something ran away from the founder. I suspect that part of what happened was the extra expenses of the redesign and mission creep. It seems like Haas wanted this to be more of a universal modkit and knowing apple that was not going to work. Honestly should have stuck with the modbook designery and worried about add-ons and flexibility of functions later.
the... ehm... your modbook is actually better than my current pc haha
Gosh! I remember this now!!! Had completely forgotten!
Good stuff, eh?
Wow! I can’t believe I never heard of this! I was studying graphic design around the time the first version was around, and had I known there was a MacBook with a touch screen that I could have used for class projects and digital illustration, I’d have been over the moon! Nowadays I have an iPad Pro with a keyboard accessory, which I am using to type this comment. I love it to pieces, but there are times I wish Apple would make an iPad that runs Mac instead of iOS
Love that reference at the start!
Man have Wacom tech in a tablet like that so long ago is so crazy! What a clever little device, I would have loved it for drawing back in high school.
This is actually really freaking cool. You could send your MacBook and they’d make you a mod book?! We need more of those type of work. I love it.
The only one i ever saw in the "wild" was briefly in an episode of Eureka, a character was just holding it. I didn't think the modbook actually existed.
Super interesting. Thank you.
That's 2770$ with the inflation for the base model, I wouldn't call that a "fair price", those Wacom tablets are over expensive too...
Are they really over-expensive? I've seen people cheap out on tablets and... they're usually not too good. But I'm a bit biased because I've only ever used Wacom. I've come to trust it so much.
That into was truly a work of absolute genius
"That's all I got for today."
And thus, was the final words of Andreas Haas, and we haven't heard from him since.
at 3:50 i was like "oh crap hes gonna lose the balance and drop it"
wasn't there a touch operated Mac tablet prototype in 2002? I wonder if there is actual footage of it running
I would like to see someone else pick up the project and make available to everyone to make their own
You can always build it yourself if you want. Just rig up a digitizer pulled from a wacom tablet or some other compatible sensor, ensuring that the digitizer has the same size as your macbook's display size, then install it onto your macbook's display assembly.
I personally use a ThinkPad X220 Tablet which I Hackintoshed myself. Since the ThinkPad has both a 2-point capacitive touchscreen and an internal Wacom digitizer built right onto the display, the touch works out of the box.
Bummer. I found this video after noticing Modbook.com is now gone. I had the first gen Modbook. Due to a shipping mishap, it arrived terribly damaged and never worked right. Regardless, even in its battered form, it seemed like a device that was both well thought out and had great potential. Haas himself even talked to me over the phone to help me resolve the matter. Business can be a viscous counterpart to passion unfortunately.
Great Job!

Best intro ever !!
i swear if the modbook relaunches again all the artists are gonna come for it. all in one graphic tablet pcs are much needed these days.
LOL 😂 the introduction
I'd put money on it that the major issue they were/are facing is the hardware itself, ever since the late 2015/2016 redesign and the introduction of the T2 chip etc, the new macbooks just became impossible to touch, I attempted a project somewhat recently where I took the mainboard from a faulty 12 inch MacBook (tiny little board) and attempted to install it in a custom mini lounge PC chassis, lord god the problems I had, the second that board came out of the case, boot issues, display issues, crashing, slow processing etc etc etc, but pop it back in the chassis and boom, it's fine...even without major components like battery, display and keyboard connected.. apple has done a lot to make sure projects like this and repairs in general just aren't worth your time , I can only imagine the immense roadblocks they've faced trying to get a touchbar Mac into a totally unique formfactor, I would go so far as to say it's impossible.
Love your videos an I'm not even a tech guy ..an your shirt is amazing 💯
6:53 - “first sale” pertains to the rightsholder, not you. The first sale was when you bought the disc at the store.
“The term "first-sale doctrine" comes from the fact that the copyright owner maintains control over a specific copy only until it is first sold.”
honestly, i believe if they even released a new one they would have competition with things like the surface pro and hell even an ipad, as well as like,, multiple other tablet/laptop hybrids
This video is the max watch to the snazzy labs video. Just kidding man. Just found your channel and really enjoying your content!
Always thought it would be nice to have one although the newer design not so much did not know they were planning to incorporate the touch bar not like there is a lack of information or anything. It was not mentioned that a show on the Syfy channel was using them the original model as props. The appeal that it had for me was the full access to the operating system and not necessarily limited to apps like on the iPad although Sidecar... but that requires two devices but works really well. I fell in love with the convertible format with a Windows system and always would love to use Mac but sadly the one I have is probably not Hackintosh compatible. Acer travlemate c110.
I have an idea for how ModBook could be revived: Put the internals of the new Apple Silicon Macs with the M1 chip into the body of a modern tablet, like the iPad Pro. Give it a proper multi-touch high resolution display with pressure sensitive stylus, and maybe even 120hz refresh rate, and Smart Connector-like keyboard and trackpad support, running macOS Big Sur, of course. This would be the ideal tablet for professionals who just can’t get enough out of the iPad Pro, and with a new 5nm fanless ARM SoC, it could likely fit into the body of a thin and light modern tablet. Plus macOS Big Sur is remarkably touch-friendly.
For those who wanted a touchscreen mac - just get yourself an X220 Tablet, then Hackintosh it. I'm running that setup and it works just fine.
I have an X220t. How easy was the hackintosh portion?
@@LegoWormNoah101 Quite easy. There's a guide out there, just search for X220T hackintosh, there would be a guide by McDonnell Tech.
You're stuck with High Sierra though unless you want to do some patching. X230T is better since the HW is better supported for newer mac OSes.
I did see one of those in arch school :) was super cool...
Now I just wanna see if there is resources for doing this yourself. Like, consumer-level 3D printers are available, you can order machined parts online, making your own bloody ModBook, that sounds pretty gosh darn cool, if you ask me.
The best intro in the world.
Thank you : )

This is quite interesting. I was a sales and his dev executive for 10 months 2013-14 for them. What I saw behind those walls. Wow in a nutshell.
I paid for a product I saw on Kickstarter years ago. The product was a set of glasses with a built-in camera to record what you saw. But when you pay on Kickstarter, you are not paying for a product; rather, you are making an investment and if that investment works out, you may be sent the product you want. Since the fledgling camera glasses company was taking pre-orders on their website for the same price, I placed a pre-order instead. I am very happy I did. After delays and typical BS from Kickstarter projects, several months past the estimated ship date I finally cancelled my pre-order and received a full refund. I don't think the people who used Kickstarter ever got their money back.
This thing looks so cool.
I own one of these. They’re not much use nowadays as I have a model which isn’t supported with Catalina patcher, it’s got a nice new SSD installed however.

A ModBook Pro X with Big Sur would be amazing.
Honestly, Big Sur to me is a big clue that eventually Apple'll do a touchscreen pro mac.
Big Sur's interface makes little sense for trackpad and mouse, it can run iPad Apps on M1 equipped machines, and macOS's gestures have been touchscreen friendly for a *lonnng* time now.
