Bardock being cold hearted makes him a more compelling character showing care to a Saiyan was taboo i like the idea of him being a street rat who still struggle in vain.
The dragon ball universe is a multiverse. It also has multiple timelines per universe sometimes. Bardock absolutely went back in time.

Yamoshi was the first super saiyan, and cold never feared the legend of the super saiyan because it was just a legend. Freezer was obsessed with been the greatest and most powerful in the universe, so even the slightest chance of someone been stronger infuriated him.

All the retcon really did was change goku's age and give us more oc bardok's backstory. Nothing about him that we already knew changed.

XenoVerse confirmed years back that the Episode of Bardock was due of Mira's intervention as Towa wants a pure hearted Saiyan to experiment on. Because of this, a Time Patroller of Frieza's Race was tasked to ensure Lord Chilled survive long enough to pass the existence of a Saiyan to his family, to stabilize the time stream. Mira snatched Bardock afterwards and Towa modified him into the Masked Saiyan.
So the Episode of Bardock is NOT part of the main timeline but an altered timeline cause by the Time Breaker and stabilize by the Time Patrol.

Let's be fair here kira toriyama cannot figure out what's Canon and what's not canon even if it leads back to the original storyline like if you look originally in the freezer ark Goku has his father's looks and Frieza realizes that and realizes it's bardock son from the night he destroyed planet Vegeta so therefore you can't really get rid of him like you can with DBz broly this is why dragon Ball minus bardock doesn't make any sense it makes less sense than dragon Ball z bardock like it's nice we know who the mother is now but it's not nice how they've completely just wiped their ass with his story they made him less powerful in super
